Another gem from the discard stack: THE HAPPY LION'S QUEST by Louise Fatio with illustrations by Roger Duvoison. I grew up reading Duvoison's classic, PETUNIA, but never knew about THE HAPPY LION or the nine sequels! Published in 1961, the Happy Lion is not happy. He misses his friend François, the zookeeper's son, who is away at school (the lycée - these books are dotted with French words) and decides to visit him. His quest takes him to a farm, then for a nap under the tree where gendarme Pépin, who has been tracking the lion, is hiding. The Happy Lion stows away in a truck and finally makes it to the school where joy and chaos ensue. The Happy Lion is such a polite and attentive listener that Monsieur Balet allows him to stay at the lycée for a leçon in arithmétique and then drives him back to the zoo in his automobile. In his hometown, his return is celebrated with flags, music and a speech about friendship. I love Duvoisin's simple, muted palette and the detailed illustrations in THE HAPPY LION'S QUEST.
