I love this show 😍 And I cant wait to start the next theme : Tattoo 😁😁😁😁😁 I want to see what you will do too, if you want to participate :) See you soon 😘 🇨🇵 Voila mon dessin pour le premier mois de mon challenge !

Recently I was asked to write an “artist’s statement” for a short story I wrote called “The Girl on the Box”. I’ve never written an artist’s statement before, and I was puzzled, to be honest, because I always figured that whatever an artist is trying to state would be in the piece already. What more is there to say?
I can’t wait for you to read the actual story, but here’s the “statement” I came up with:
"This story, “The Girl on the Box”, aims to invoke memories of a familiar experience for a very specific audience while still striking a universal chord that resonates with all readers, including those who have not lived what’s described. My writing has a dual goal: illuminating the particular experiences of black women while simultaneously shedding light on our humanity and the shared aspects of the human experience, regardless of background. The “box” referenced in this story is one not all readers will recognize, but we have all experienced boxes. Boxes mold self-image within a set of ideals. In some cases the walls of these boxes block us from asserting our identities beyond societal or cultural norms. Sooner or later, we all find ways to escape our boxes. This story celebrates the initial moment of freedom for one young person who found a way out of her box."
