“What the fuck is wrong with me?” she said, louder than she meant too.             A few startled birds took flight from the nearby trees. If the birds had an answer to her query, they kept it to themselves.             Petra stomped a few more paces and then looked back over her shoulder. Cerbi padded silently behind her, her paws not disturbing any of the twigs or leaves underfoot.             “Do you know what the fuck is wrong with me?” Petra yelled at the dog. “Is that one of your super powers?”             Cerbi only stared back at her.             “Guess not.”             The trees to either side of the path became more dense the further she moved down the trail. In most places the tree tops converged overhead, creating a canopy of green that shielded the path from the view of anyone or anything flying above. When the trail came to a fork, she chose the left side at random, but not before tearing a piece of bark off a tree to mark where she’d been.             “I don’t even like him,” she said.             Cerbi was walking next to her now, and Petra appreciated having the pretext of talking to the dog to cling to, instead of fully accepting the reality that she was tearing through the rapidly darkening woods, ranting to herself like a crazy person. #authorschallenge2020 demands a dialogue with a pet. Here’s 5 #writingprompts for the #authorschallenge2020 of the day. I busted out my “Writers Toolbox” and spun/drew up some prompts. Let’s play! 1.First game is Sixth Sense Cards - write for five minutes on whatever “a half-eaten tangerine” brings to mind. 2.Next up is the Protagonist Game. You protagonist is Liz, who writes books. She gets special training to write the Great American Novel (#relatable), and the obstacle in her way is her mother. 3.Protagonist Game round 2! Joy, from the rock band buys a new wardrobe to be the great seducer. The obstacle in her way is Fred, the monster. 4 and 5 - Pick Up Prompts- follow the prompts on the popsicle sticks. Today’s #authorschallenge2020 is #Culture I’ve explored. Sadly I can’t say I’ve done much exploring myself (travel is expensive!) So I’m going to share one I’ve read about that I’ve always found fascinating. The Mosuo ethnic group in China practices a kinship arrangement called zouhon or “walking marriages”. Mom lives with her parents, siblings, and children. At night, Dad comes and has a sleepover with Mom, then goes back to his own house (with his parents and siblings) in the morning. Mom’s brother essentially serves as the children’s father figure, whereas Dad is relegated to the “guy who sometimes brings the kids candy” status. Meanwhile Dad’s busy serving as the father figure to his sister’s kids. Walking marriages are a friendly reminder that all kinds of other kinship patterns exist besides “Mom and Dad practice a monogamous relationship and live together with their kids.” As a fantasy writer who gets to make up whatever culture I want, why stick with American style kinship? It's got everything!
