my dear, beautiful, splendid fandom-mates:

so i was fucking around with @saltandlimes in about mid-october, as we do, and the subject of parody songs came up. i happened to mention that in my family, christmas carol parodying is a semi-professional sport. “do tell,” she said.

about ten minutes later the words for this were done. about ten minutes after that, i went, “hold on. this needs to be a thing.”

i figured i could handle the music, but i couldn’t do this alone. so i pulled every last shred of nerves together and messaged all my favourite kylux cartoonists. i nearly cried when everyone wanted to join in on this nonsense. i couldn’t believe it. and the art i got just knocked my socks off.

@wyomingnot supplied invaluable vidding advice. @pidgy-draws and @pixiepunch supplied moral support. and my lovely husband put up with my voice acting.

You wrote that your mainly study the history of the past century, but how much do you know of Emperor Augustus, and his turning of the Roman republic into an empire, and would you agree with me that Augustus parallels Palpatine far better than Hitler does?

Rome is not something I’ve formally studied at any great depth, so I can’t comment on this to the depth that I could on 20th century history, but yes, absolutely agree that Augustus is a far better parallel for Palpatine than Hitler. Also, remember that Hitler and other leading members of the Nazi party greatly admired both Rome and the Roman aesthetic, so many aspects of the Nazi aesthetic are actually just repurposed aspects of the Roman aesthetic. Thus, even though the First Order are visually coded to evoke the Nazis, really those visuals could just as easily reference Rome, which means the “they look like Nazis so they are Nazis” argument is doubly flawed. 1) Looking like a Nazi in a world where Nazis don’t exist doesn’t make you and Nazi and 2) The so called “Nazi look” is also a Roman look. @theeascetic studies history and classics and actually wrote a really interesting few paragraphs that included a discussion of the First Order’s Roman aesthetic here in response to something I’d posted. (The format is showing up wonky, tho that might just be tumblr glitching on me, but if you go to the post and then open it in the reblog view as though you are going to share it then you should be able to clearly see who wrote what).
