There have been some stunning death scenes in my Renaissance class, but none so bold as The Duchess of Malfi. #amreading #renaissance #theduchessofmalfi #book #collegelife https://www.instagram.com/p/BvzryHiH3hY/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=iiwyxowyl916

Apricots and The Duchess of Malfi
If only the poor Duchess knew that apricots mean danger and that maybe you should take the apricot as a warning of bad things to come. Btw this (well, it was supposed to be a GIF) is an image from New Girl.

Love learning about history through theatre. Turns out, The Duchess of Malfi was a real woman who defied the wishes of her two brothers and married the man she loved after her first husband died. She was fiercely independent and headstrong in a time where women were expected to be otherwise. || #johnwebster #theduchessofmalfi #internationalwomensday #womensday #theatre #theater #history #italy

On babysitting duty, but Mia has decided I'm the anti Christ, so I've had to camp out in the kitchen so she doesn't have to look at me... Couple of hours of study time! Nottingham Playhouse enabled me to develop my model making skills, costume designs, story boarding and concept skills. Looking back at the project my time management could have improved given the importance of my deadlines and helpful meetings with the director. Stronger time management would have helped spark my ideas and push my final design forward. This is a good learning outcome, however reaching the end of this project. I have found that I am capable within skills that I didn’t think I would be. I feel that  I struggled with costume drawing. Even though I had explored costumes and ideas thouroughly I felt that I couldn’t put them down on paper. I managed to overcome this by doing some sketchy pictures with colouring pencils to convey personalities of the characters. By putting my ideas down onto paper I was able to develop them into more detailed drawings.

How was staging and lighting used as a tool to enhance the theatre going experience at the Sam Wanamaker playhouse’s 2014 production of The Duchess of Malfi.
The 2014 production of The Duchess of Malfi was staged in the newly built Sam Wanamaker Jacobean themed playhouse. It is located next to Shakespeare’s the Globe theatre and in comparison to the Globe, the Sam Wanamaker playhouse was built from blueprints from around the 17th century. Because this theatre is one of the closest theatres to that sporting a Jacobean atmosphere, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is quintessential in giving audiences an experience as close to Jacobean theatres of the 17th century. And due to this, aspects like staging and lighting need to be taken into consideration as the Sam Wanamaker theatre is considerably smaller than its neighbour, the Globe. Upon watching 2014 production of The Duchess of Malfi through the internet, there were major differences to previous productions I have viewed in the Globe. In particular parts of the play such as Act 4 Scene 1 where the Duchess is tormented by Bosola in an act the scare her, all candles are blown out which creates an ominous atmosphere and can be completely felt by the audience. The stage itself is quite close to where the audience sit. This gives off an effect that allows the audience to feel a part of the play. Other aspects of staging which also allow for this feeling of intimacy with the actors is the positioning of the entrance and exit points which cuts through the audience on the ground level.
The play is perfect for an indoor setting such as the Sam Wanamaker playhouse, as it is small and intimate unlike that of the globe. Gemma Arterton, who plays the Duchess in this production comments on “The Duchess of Malfi being about claustrophobia and being constantly observed” in the Duchess’s case by her intrusive brothers (YouTube, 13.05.2015). The play itself focuses, like a lot of Jacobean writings on dark topics so for this production to have lighting be candle lit only allows for easy adjustment of light to set the mood when the atmosphere changes from light hearted in the beginning to dark and oppressive as the play continues. In terms of ease of adjustment, candle light proved to be perfect at singling out certain characters when the play desired it. As the source of light is concentrated due to actors occasionally having to carry around a candle stick, the audience have a sense of feeling as if it is just the actor on stage and them in the whole room.
