Journal Dump!
Finals ended over a week ago for me, but somehow I'm still feeling the effects (honestly, they're only getting worse). I think about writing for Tumblr a lot--it brings me so much joy!--but fatigue and muscle pain are reaching absolutely ridiculous levels for me, making writing difficult. I think this is because when I get started writing, I feel so wonderful and at peace that I can't imagine stopping, leading to levels of exertion that really aren't good for me. But I also really want to write, so I'm trying to be more careful about that :)
So for today, I'm just going to share some stuff I've jotted down in my personal Discord server over the past few weeks, mostly in my now-just-vents channel, which I use as a diary that I just update whenever I feel like it. I thought these were kind of cool when I looked back at them, so I hope you'll enjoy :)
1. TBL Quotes
So I've mentioned that I'm an avid reader of TheBiasList before, and I'm sure other fans will recognize that in certain elements of my style. I always love Best Of lists, and Nick's Best Songs of 2022 list featured some particulary lovely writing. Nick's writing always gets the job done, but these sentences made me more emotional than they had any right to, which was unexpected and very welcome!
Maybe Forever 1 isn’t fireworks after all. Maybe it’s a confetti drop, flanked by confetti cannons. Whatever the case, there’s a lot to sweep up after the song has finished. Specks of multicolored paper, damp with tears of resilience and joy.
Replay feels deeply, its frayed nerves sewn into every beat.
[link to the entry I got these quotes from]
2. Reader Things
i highlight and sticky-note, yet rarely look back at the stickies i leave in books except to take them out. i suppose i annotate like the person i wish to be, one who combs through pages of annotations for his reading journal, which is full of pretty, aesthetic handwriting.
3. When Life Becomes Livable (cw suicidal ideation & fantasies)
and that's what i'm used to, isn't it? knowing that this can't last long, but that nothing can so i might as well just take what i can get, no matter the cost, before the curtains come down. i'm used to watching for the end, eagle-eyed. i'm used to resigning myself to all that is impossible to live with, all that makes me want to walk forever into the sea. i'm not used to security or livability, so i watch for the end and assume i will not live, even as it begins to dawn on me that i may.
4. Some People Just Don't Care About Trans Kids, and it Fills My Bones With Fear (cw: transphobia)
To Fox News: Do you know how badly I wish to be alive? Understand me.
This was in response to an article I don't have the strength to find, one of those ones about policies that will forcefully out kids to their parents if they disclose their identites at school... For someone as frequently suicidal as myself, this couple of sentences surprised me as I wrote them. But I keep rereading them, and they keep feeling so, so true. It's the new meds, maybe :)
5. Reflections on Life without Religion
But I have a reason to live and progress and reach for those holy moments where life, my own and that of others, feels valuable in a way that rings deep in my chest. I do it all for one who loves and admires and, I dare say, designed me--my past self. Intelligent design? Not always, but sometimes. Certainly sometimes. I do it for her.
If you're curious about my religious affiliantions (really, my lack thereof), I direct you to this post!
6. Ending with Fluffy Music Content
StayC's "Love Fool" reminds me the joy of saying, "I'm excited to see you!"
This song still hasn't become a classic for me--I mean, I just love so many StayC songs so much more--but I've definitely started to see what people see in it!
#thanks for joining me on this little trip through the past few weeks! it's time for me to go back to resting now :)#six keeps on running#personal writing#journaling#thebiaslist#agnostic

reviewing january's comebacks
This is an experiment. I thought it’d be fun to have my own space for reviewing the stuff I listen to, so here it is. YouTube style reviews, inspired by luisa and Kpopalypse and TheBiasList and everyone who does kpop reviews.
ON&ON, Hong Eunki
Pleasant but doesn’t seem to hold much replay value for me. Won’t skip if it comes on though. [7.75/10]
In the Dark, Jeong Sewoon
A pleasant listen. don’t know why I never listened to this before now. I will reflect properly on my actions and make sure to listen more in the future. [8/10, although I doubt I’ll go back to this one a lot]
Fav Boyz feat. Thutmose (Steve Aoki’s Gold Star Remix), A.C.E
No one asked for a remix. [5/10]
CRUSH, MCND
Basic MCND formula, nice instrumentals and rapping with a chant for a chorus. Ice Age is still my favourite, but this might grow on me. [6/10]
MY TREASURE, TREASURE
Pleasant. Haven’t watched the MV but this is the type of song that would probably have the idols in white t-shirts, sitting around a fire, smiling and clapping. [7/10]
HWAA, (G)I-DLE
Hann 2.0, except I like Hann better. [7/10]
What I Said, VICTON
Started off okay, and then everything descended into basic boy group territory. For some reason I’m still listening to it. [6/10]
T1419, ASURABALBALTA
Basic boy group thing. You boys should sue your company for giving you such an unremarkable name. It’s better than DRIPPIN, I guess.
PERFUME, YUBIN
Points off for the ‘fume fume, fume fume’ line. [8.25/10]
Abittipsy, YOUHA
A great example of the retro trend. [9/10]
Thank U, U-KNOW
Very catchy, I can’t stop singing along. [8/10]
STAY YOUNG, AB6IX
Nice. The chorus was just nice at the start, then the second part made me decide to keep it. Or was that the prechorus and then the chorus? I think I’ll keep this one. [7.5/10]
No diggity, ONEUS
Not the ONEUS comeback we wanted. I’ll just pretend it didn’t happen. [5/10]
My Turn, CRAVITY
VROOM VROOM VROOM VROOM VROOM VROOM VROOM SKRRRT. That’s all there is to know about this song. It’s not unbearable for me, just amusing. The part after the vrooms and skrrts in the chorus make it better, but I don’t remember much of the verses. [6.5/10, points off for skrrrt skrrrt]
Time for me, Berry Good
Generic girl group song. Rated [G] for generic.
X, Chungha
Meh. Excited for the album though. [6/10]
Get You Alone, Baekhyun
Would have been an 8 but it doesn’t seem to have much replay value. [7/10]
Love So Sweet, Cherry Bullet
Love it in spite of the ugly MV. This song deserved a better video! [9/10]
Lemon Candy, Pink Fantasy
Generic girl group song. Liked it though. [7.5/10]
Only You, Saturday
Pleasant. [G]
Amateur Lover, Susan
Didn’t care much about it until the chorus hit. I like it. Reminds me a little of Rina Sawayama. [8/10]
Burn It, Golden Child
Golden Child can do better than okay. [7/10]
Eeny Meeny, U-KNOW
[U] for unlistened.
U Mad, Bobby
No Bobby, I’m not. YOU should be mad, for rapping so hard over such a weak beat. Sue your producer. The second verse is better, but the chorus is basic YG style. [5.5/10]
Odd Eye, Dreamcatcher
Sigh. Not the Dreamcatcher comeback I wanted. Where are the guitars? The rock? Then again, I said the same about Boca, and I love Boca now. It’s unlikely I’ll like this one though. At least Handong is back now. [7/10 because I’m biased] EDIT: Raising the rating to 7.5 because more listens have chnaged my mind, but that rap in verse two is still grating on my ears.
Celebrity, IU
It’s nice but IU can definitely do better. [7.5/10]
I’m Not Cool, Hyuna
This is a Blackpink song but sung by Hyuna. [6/10]
D-D-DANCE, IZ*ONE
OK, but I don’t care about this song. [7/10]
My favourite kpop song of January: Love So Sweet, Cherry Bullet Honorable Mentions: In The Dark, Jeong Sewoon Perfume, Yubin Abittipsy, Youha Get You Alone, Baekhyun Thank You, U-KNOW Amateur Lover, Susan

i just made the mistake of looking up reviews of pentagon songs from kpop reviewer blogs like “kpopreviewed” and “thebiaslist” and more like that... i wanted to see what the general reaction to shine and on was... idk lmao like i get why people would say that naughty boy was just them trying recreate the success of shine (though i disagree lmao... i can see why someone would think that though) and there was even one person who called humph “shine 2.0, shine but with more verses” like WHAT
idk im just gonna say it lmao
humph and naughty boy are better than shine
i love shine but its verses arent as strong as its chorus. or the dance, lol. edawn absolutely makes that song too, like if he didnt look, act, or sound the way he did in that song, then it wouldnt be what it is. looking at the song as a whole.... it’s not as consistent as naughty boy or especially humph. like, dont get me wrong, i gotta keep saying this, i looooooooooooooove shine, lol. but honestly, i’m not as hot on the “nobody’s like you” part as i am on the chorus and the opening... edawns parts. and i know that edawn essentially makes naughty boy too, and his absence detracts from the song, but theres not much there in terms of song content that i dont love. and even moreso for humph. if you are gonna call either of them “shine 2.0″.... you know, maybe that is accurate... only in that they have gotten better at writing that type of song.
now, i know this might be like heresy lol, and i get that. people have a really strong attachment to shine, particularly because of edawn. but let’s just pretend edawn never left the group, and they came out with naughty boy and humph exactly the way they are in this timeline too. (and sha la la but thats a different sound and not as comparable to shine lol). if that were the case... i dont think anyone would question that they have gotten better and better at writing that kind of silly-serious song each time. it’s only because of the controversy that people consider shine to be untouchable. if edawn hadnt been kicked out, shine would still be great, but i think it’d be a lot clearer to more people that they have been improving on the formula each time since then... not trying to live up to it. sha la la proved that this isnt a group that wants to merely live up to expectations. hell, shine itself proved that. them going back to that silly-serious style isnt them running out of ideas and wanting to stick to what works, no, it’s them innovating further on that style, carving out a niche and a unique identity for themselves. its okay for a group to have a distinct style. that’s what they have. i hope they never fully abandon it, even if people accuse them of just doing “shine 6.0″ lmao.
regardless of whether you agree that naughty boy and humph are better than shine or not... i hope you at least agree that they aren’t just knockoffs... god i cant even put myself in the head of someone who missed how uniquely charming all three of the songs are... theyre all charming, yeah, but theyre all charming in different ways and for different reasons.
i could make a post about why i think naughty boy and humph are better than shine another time, but right now im tired so im not gonna at the moment. but i might sometime! fuck those kpop review sites lmao i can do wayyyyy better than them, maybe i should try... show them how its done...
#i think shine is my fourth favorite title track from them#maybe third?#it and sha la la are going back and forth#ive been on a sha la la kick though so rn thats higher#pentagon#and idk if i like naughty boy or humph more actually......... i think naughty boy at the moment.... but maybe humph.... idk#i think my fifth is maybe can you feel it? hmmmmm#idk#if only spring snow was a title track haha... if they do a full pop punk comeback i will lose my goddamn mind

What is Valid Criticism of J-Hope's "More"?
For a few years now, I've been following a k-pop review blog called TheBiasList, and I really enjoy its content. Through my time as an avid follower, I've come to understand that Nick, the author, takes a very specific approach to reviewing music, one which stays pretty consistent throughout all of his reviews. Nick's focus is sonic: viewing a song as a product of production and vocals (read: sound) rather than as a product of writing, or visuals, or album direction. I really respect the focus of Nick's approach, and over the years, TheBiasList has introduced me to songs that I, as someone who prefers to focus on album direction, never would have paid much attention to otherwise.
In the comments under TheBiasList's review of J-Hope's "More", a war began when a few commenters, likely upset about the mid-7's score Nick gave the song, stressed that Nick should have focused on the lyrics instead. One commenter actually left their own criticism of the lyrics in the comments, after which they were harangued by the same commenters from before about not appreciating the music video enough. The criticism of criticism made by these commenters is frustrating to me because the viewpoint offered, in my mind, encourages a lack of variance in the way we look at media.
In literary criticism, there's this concept of critical lenses; basically, these are ways of approaching a text--instead of trying to take in every idea a text has to offer at once, you use a lens to focus your study. For example, I studied Hamlet through a feminist lens while my classmates took on other lenses, like psychoanalytical & Marxist. Some texts certainly lend themselves to different lenses; for example, the Webtoon The Remarried Empress provides ample opportunity for feminist analysis because of its central heroine(s) & focus on women's capability (and lack thereof) to maneuver within a patriarchal system, but opportunity to find evidence for an interpretation through the lens of queer theory is much smaller. That being said, I can do (and have done) analyses of The Remarried Empress through both of these lenses, and I don't think it's reasonable to say that only understanding a work through the most obvious lenses that can be applied to it is valid--I think both of my interpretations of the Webtoon are equally interesting, and my thoughts on the story would be much less interesting without the combination of both.
This brings us back to J-Hope. I completely understand the emphasis these commenters place on the lyrics; BTS themselves have frequently directed our attention to the stories told by their songs, and rap is generally a lyric-focused style of music, anyway. That being said, "More" is heavy on sonic experimentation, too, most noticeably with the garage-rock turn the chorus takes, so there is certainly material to work with when looking at the song from a sonic perspective. Rather than choosing to focus on sound because of some lack of intelligence, I consider it to be an artistic choice on the part of TheBiasList, one that adds to the lyrical and visual analyses done by others rather than detracting from them.
In conclusion: I don't think criticism through the most directly applicable lens of interpretation should be the only criticism respected. TheBiasList has a long history of offering criticism through a sonic lens, and I think it's wrong to say that Nick's look at "More" is invalid because of that. Like I mentioned earlier, I personally am more of an artistic vision enjoyer; I love strong concepts and cohesive discographies that tell a story, and I choose many of my favorite songs and albums based on this. As a result, my taste doesn't always overlap too much with Nick's, but I still find the criticism on TheBiasList to be an extremely valuable supplement to my thoughts on music. I think there's a lot to appreciate about it, so I hate to see cruel comments that step all over what I think makes the blog so wonderful in the first place.
#this has been incubating since more first came out and finally it just decided OKAY WRITING TIME so here we go!#i would highly recommend thebiaslist's breaking down the song posts--those are some of my favorites ever!!!#and hey maybe y'all will see the remarried empress posts one day! let me know if you're interested ig :)#j-hope#j-hope more#thebiaslist

the best b-sides of march and april
MARCH
Take Me Home, The Leaders, ATEEZ
Still holding onto the holie that Take Me Home gets a music video. Doubtful, since Kingdom has begun already. Also, my taste is definitely in question if The Leaders is on this list but I like it so there.
UNO, Starvoy, GHOST9
Is it time for me to learn who's who in GHOST9?
All For Love, Good Time, WayV
Was going to put Action Figure in this list instead of All For Love the first time I listened to the mini. I apologize for my bad thoughts and taste. I will reflect properly and I will show you a better side of me next time.
KKILI KKILI, Candy, G-reyish
The album isn't really an album, more a compilation of their previous singles. It's a good opportunity to discover G-reyish though, now you have no excuse.
Higher, Mirae
Didn't think much of their debut on first listen but this track has convinced me to listen to the whole mini.
Celebrity, My Sea, Ah puh, Epilogue, IU
Did a review of the album so go read that (when I remember to upload it).
Reach Out Your Hands, DRIPPIN
Everytime I have to type out the name of this group I cringe. Woolim I'm sure you guys can do better? Coming to the song, I didn't think much of the title track for Drippin's recent comeback but TheBiasList recommended this so I listened to it and actually liked it. It's good, and maybe since I liked their previous b-sides I might check out the rest of this mini.
Teddy Bear, Sejeong
Still Here, ATEEZ
I'm super grateful for this song from ATEEZ's Japanese album that takes us back to the sounds of the Treasure era.
REBOUND, TOUCHE, WOODZ
Don't light my fire, Dreamcatcher
Yummy, Uni, Weeekly
APRIL
New Me, Last Dance, Super Moon, WJSN
INTRO, 3YE
Love Fool, SO BAD (TAK remix), STAYC
Love Counseling, Yoon Jisung
All Good, ASTRO
Area, Days & Years, SHINee
DON'T WANNA GO, BLACK, DOOM DOOM, ROCKET ROCKET, NU'EST
My Genesis (Ubermensch), ONF
On the first listen I thought this was such a jam but now it feels like the song is missing something. I still like it though but I prefer Ugly Dance.

Songs of the Summer, 2022: Late to the Party Awards
[masterpost]
Intro
This is a category I've had in my personal Best Of lists for a while, because I always feel bad that I’m super slow with music--I usually don’t fall in love with songs until long after the buzz around them has passed. The way I see it, songs become truly special by finding us at that specific moment when we need them and finally, fully get them--I think that's what it means to say something "aged well". So this list is dedicated to those songs: those that haven’t made it onto any of my previous lists, were released during the 2021-2022 school year (the time period covered by my last Best Of list), and finally caught my eye this summer. This is my [after]party, and I'll be an obnoxious gg stan if I want to!
1. Alive by Lightsum (May 24, 2022)
Before listening to "Alive", I had managed to ignore Lightsum completely. This, I'll admit, was mostly because of petty annoyance at yet another group debuting with a single (I understand that business things influence this but also... come onnnnnnnnnnnn). So yes, I knew "Vanilla" existed, but I didn't listen to it, and I didn't even know about their second song, "Vivace" (very regrettable, as I would have liked it's WJSN-esque sound on first listen).
But then that tiny but explosive sound bite of "Alive" kept showing up in k-tube videos, and after about two weeks of "YOU MAKE ME FEEL ALIVE" blaring randomly in my brain, I caved in and listened to the whole song. "Alive" is delightfully audacious music, fully embracing both the Itzy and the Gfriend sides of the girl-group spectrum so that even if you don't like it, the song will definitely be stuck in your head. It turns out their whole discography is full of dance music that manages to be both crisp and wild-sounding in a way that doesn't let me ignore it any longer--I was missing out last year, and I'm so glad "Alive" wormed its way into my brain and finally won me over!
2. In My World by Rocket Punch (February 28, 2022)
When I first listened to this album, all my attention was on "Red Balloon". I have a preference for the simplest Rocket Punch tracks, ones like "Lilac" and "Ring Ring (Acoustic Ver.)", but "In My World" got to me eventually. TheBiasList sold it as synth in the tradition of "Take On Me" in a review from back when it was first released, and, though it didn't click with me on first listen, "In My World" built a little nest in a back corner of my mind because of this description, waiting for its moment.
And here I was this summer, craving sweet, high-energy girl-group music after Yena won my heart with her summer album. "In My World" was exactly what I needed, and it hasn't lost its grip on me since. The whole song is decorated with fast-moving, shiny things--melodies and synth riffs and high notes--that make it so, so exciting. It's as glossy as "Bim Bam Bum" (yes, I like that one, please don't murder me), but with a kind of energy their other tracks could only dream of!
3. Good Boy Gone Bad by TXT (May 9, 2022)
I formally apologize for not getting this one at first--I was younger then, and I've learned from my mistakes since. My excuse is that I was distracted by the b-sides (hi, "Trust Fund Baby", you still make me unreasonably sad), but I recognize now that "Good Boy Gone Bad" is probably just the best noise ever??!? All the textures--the whispering, the crunchy syllables, the layers of scream-along shout-singing--combine to create something that makes my heart race like the loudest noise music without feeling overwhelming or desensitizing me by the second chorus. The production knows how to be quiet without slowing the whole song down, and the contrasts in volume (can you tell I just really love the whispering in the prechorus?) push some little happy-button in my brain. I think this is the most I've replayed a song in this style since "God's Menu"!
4. In the Mirror by BOL4 (April 20, 2022)
As a huge BOL4 fan, I was bored out of my mind by this years' album. The day it came out, I sat down to listen to Seoul and just zoned out for a while. I still can't remember what "Seoul" sounds like (my mind just replaces it with RM's track of the same title), and "What Make Us Beautiful", though it did make its way onto a few of my playlists because it sort of fit the mood I was going for, isn't a track I can say I enjoy. So imagine my surprise when I realized I had completely missed "In the Mirror" the first time around (looking back, I'm guessing I just quit the album halfway through and went back to obsessing over Filmlet, the release that got me into BOL4 in the first place).
"In the Mirror" is classic angsty alt-rock, and Jiyoung navigates the transitions between soft, bouncy vocals (think: "Some" and "Hug") in the verses and all-out wails in the choruses excellently. It embraces my favorite parts of the genre by making my heart stop in the moments before the chorus hits, as if I can't help but breathe in deep and prepare to scream along, and by leaving plenty of space for guitar in the postchorus (look, I just really like intense guitar! there's a reason "Blank" is my favorite BOL4 song). I could listen to this one forever--"In the Mirror" manages to fit alongside the best BOL4 fluff (I'll give Jiyoung's performance the credit for that one!) while also coming off as a very genuine exploration of new musical and emotional territory.
5. Super Yuppers! by WJSN Chocome (January 25, 2022)
I thought this one was fun from the first day it came out (that bridge is both hilarious and very satisfying to listen to!), but it didn't find any lasting spot on my playlists during winter & spring. Similar to "Alive", though, YouTube forced me to hear the same sound bite (shuPEO shuPEO geuREOmyo) over and over again, and by the time summer rolled around, the chorus had imprinted itself in my mind and I realized what a triumph of performance this song is. "Super Yuppers!" is no brain only pink dresses music, and each member of Chocome fully embraces the shallow, Mean Girls-esque vocal stylings that entails (NO BUT DID ANYONE ELSE THINK OF "SEXY" FROM THE MUSICAL WHILE LISTENING TO THIS??). "Super Yuppers!" is all aesthetic, and I couldn't appreciate it more.
#my fave songs#yes i promise the actual entries for the summer are coming soon IM SORRY#bol4#lightsum#rocket punch#txt#wjsn#wjsn chocome

It really is annoying -__- I'm not used to it either. And when i hear people "sing" it all they do is make up gibberish
