Fundamentals of Lighting Design - Spring 2019
I’m a little amazed that we were able to make this happen...
I just finished teaching a 10-week course, (once a week), in Fundamentals of Lighting Design. It was an interesting experience, but a rewarding one.
At our theatre, The Stadium Theatre for the Performing Arts, in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, we have a lot of actors. We do not have a lot of technicians.
The Theatre itself is a 1,200 seat theatre, built in the 1920s. It is a Repertory Theatre with shows every weekend. There could be a comedy show on Thursday, a Tribute show on Friday, a different Tribute show on Saturday, and a Children’s show on Sunday. It is a very busy place.
Our Technical Staff consists of a Technical Director and a team of volunteers. Stage Managers, Directors, and Designers receive small stipends, but the rest of the team is volunteers.
In an effort to grow our group of trained technicians, we have begun offering classes in backstage work.
I decided to teach a class in Lighting Design. Six students signed up. The students were ages 15-37. They were High School students, twenty-somethings and a Dad of one of the young actors. Everyone had varying ranges of previous knowledge of working backstage, but only a few had any prior lighting experience.

The idea was to teach all of the basic Lighting techniques. We went over lighting positions, fixture types, color theory, the ‘why’, the ‘how’ and everything in-between. We even did a bit of programming training on an ETC Element lighting console.
The biggest hurdle in this process what finding time for the students to actually DO their designs. In community Theatre, there's not a lot of Tech time. Everyone has a Full-time job or goes to school, so finding open stage time is virtually impossible. Luckily, we made it work and each student took at least one musical number in the show and designed some beautiful looks.
A restaged picture...but represents the enthusiasm.
Everyone did an awesome job! I was very impressed with all of their work. However, I was most impressed with my Assistant, Amelia. She has worked with me for about 4 years on various shows. Most of the time she is running up in the ceiling to focus lights or going through the script and taking notes. We never had a lot of time to talk about the actual design process.
I gave her a challenge. Amelia’s musical number was the Brave Girl Dance. This number was not about a solo in a spotlight, it was all about the choreography of the group. She nailed it with beautiful color choices and great use of sidelight to model the dancers.
To me, it proves that the best way to learn in Theatre is to gain experience. helping out and volunteering gives you the chance to be dropped into the process and get hands-on experience.
Amelia will be doing her first full show this summer. My promise to her is that I will be her Assistant. Let’s see if I can be as good an assistant to her as she is to me.
Currently, the plan is to teach this class again in the Spring of 2020 for the Junior show. I’m excited to have new prospective designers and to see what my 2019 class is doing then...

Blending Meditation and Yoga with Theater
Blending Meditation and Yoga with Theater
Over the summer, I’ve been teaching week long drama camps for elementary and middle schoolers. I get to adapt plays myself which I really love doing and it certainly saves the theater money (I occasionally post my adaptations on my blog, I still need to add more.) I love teaching, I love writing, and I love working with kids so it really was a marriage of everything that I love into one job. It…

Interview with Synetic’s Education Program Manager
Meet Tori Bertocci - Tori has been a company member with Synetic since 2011 and took on the position of Synetic’s Education and Outreach Manager in 2016.
How did you find out about Synetic?
I first learned about Synetic through classmates, now Synetic company members, Joe Carlson and Dallas Tolentino. We used to watch the Synetic YouTube videos at the library instead of studying. I’d never seen anything like it.
After graduation I was accepted into a Seattle based stunt school and was all set to move to the west coast to pursue a career as a stunt person when I saw my first Synetic show, King Arthur. I thought the water stage was really cool. But later that season I saw King Lear. That show changed my mind. I was so swept up by the passion of the physical storytelling. So I took a risk and auditioned at Synetic. I put everything on that audition. Fortunately, I was accepted and started the training program at Synetic, understudied Macbeth and took a role in the Family Theater production Rough Face Girl.
How many Synetic shows have you done?
By the end of the 2016/17 season, it will be 14.
What is it about Synetic?
For me, it’s the ability to tell a passionate and moving story without dialogue through the most ingenious movement and choreography I’ve ever seen. Its genius is in its simplicity. It’s very powerful. It’s also about the dedication that the actors need to have - physically, emotionally, and mentally - in order to make it through a Synetic show.
How did you start teaching at Synetic?
They needed a sub for a fitness class and I filled in. I was nervous at first – I didn’t think that I had enough skill. I doubted myself. After that class, I realized that I knew more than I thought I did, and that I had this ability to break things down for people to understand. After that, I started subbing more, first for fitness, then elementary and middle school classes. Within three months, I had my own classes. From there, I learned the Outreach Shows (Magic Balloon, The Music Box) and started to teach residencies and get more training as a teaching artist. Eventually, I found myself the head of Outreach and earlier this year, I took over both Education and Outreach. I never expected that I would want to do this or that I would be any good at it, and now it has become a driving force in my career.
What do you do as the Education and Outreach Manager?
Teach, a lot. And create the curriculum so that it is unique to each residency. I do that by developing relationships with the classroom teachers so we can focus on what they need for their students.
Why do you do this?
I do this is because I didn’t always have the arts accessible to me as a student. I had a few teachers who did make them available and those experiences helped shape who I am today. I want to make sure that as many students have that opportunity available to them. Also to make sure that educators are aware that the arts are a learning tool, not an extra and that even if they don’t have arts training, it is still something they can use and incorporate into their classroom. I break it down, make it as accessible and show the value. To help them reach every kid.
Powerful Moments.
When I first go into a classroom, I don’t know these kids. I have no idea how they behave, or what their grades are. No background information. I like to scan the room to see which kids aren’t interested and then figure out what I can do to engage them. I have a knack for choosing kids that are underdogs, and putting them in roles where they just excel. These are the students that the classroom teacher might overlook. And by the end of the residency, they do a complete 180 because somebody took the time to meet them where they are. Honestly, every time I leave a residency, I cry a little.
More specifically?
Ok. Last year, I was teaching a school residency for students ages 6 to 10 with severe cognitive and physical, and emotional disabilities. There was one student in the class who just didn’t have the ability to convey emotions to the teachers, even his parents. He would get so frustrated that nobody could understand him, and he wasn’t fully understanding these emotions himself, so he responded by hurting himself. On the spot, I created an approach where we could connect his emotion to a color. Using tactile scarves, we taught him that when he started to get upset, he could point to the color he was feeling at that time and demonstrate his emotions by using the scarves. It freed him up to be able to let others know what he was feeling and he stopped hurting himself.
How does this connect to Synetic Theater?
It connects to Synetic, in that your emotions are a physical action. They consume your whole body, which is at the core of Synetic’s physical theater style; that there is no disconnect between your body and your emotion.
When someone gives to Synetic, what are they giving?
Synetic gives opportunity. When you donate to Synetic, you give opportunity. The kids that don’t get the opportunity to shine, do so with Synetic. You support the 15,000 students we interact with each year. You give joy, smiles, and happiness to a lot of kids who don’t get it in many other places. You also give opportunity to working artists, students right out of college – I owe my career to Synetic. When you give to Synetic, you are helping to transform lives.
Thanks, Tori. We think you are pretty awesome!

How Theater Education Can Change the World
Jeff Anderson of @BlackoutTheatre on how #theatereducation can change the world.
Guest Blogger Jeff Andersen is the Artistic Director of Blackout Theatre Company.
I can, quite literally, pinpoint the time my life changed forever. I was a freshman in high school acting in my first play. If you knew me at the time, you might be surprised to find me in a play. I was generally quiet, reserved and certainly didn’t like people noticing me. But there I was on…

See this is how I spend my Saturdays. Yea, I'd stay in one place with the same people (*per sem ^.^) We'd spend our leisure day in having workshops. For almost five years now, it has always been this way for me. And even when I graduate I can't see myself not going back to this kind of people. Theater is way of life for us. It has helped us in so many ways, so may aspects, so many situations in our life. We're kind of proud of that. When we'd say, yea I could do that, coz I'm a theater artist. Not just because in theater we portray so many roles, it's beacause this theater org, we make it habbit to see ourselves doing anything we could mold ourselves into. Not saying that no other people than us could do that, it's just we breathe our mantra that everyday we can do any ton of shit because we could be anything. We make use of er lecture theater gives us and apply it to our daily lives. So, yea. If someday I'd be a president of a country, be the ideal Jodie or just be so happy with the love of my life, I'd still owe it to this education :)))
