I got the first at C2E2 and then the second at Book Expo. I was able to get Katy to sign both (plus my finished copy) too!⁣ ⁣ This is the only arc that I have multiple of one book. He shouldn't be out here alone. He knows this, but he can't help but wander closer and closer to The City and away from the relative safety of his village hidden away from the increasingly industrialized city before him. The young man knows that other Pagans are around of course, they never truly left The City after all, but very few are often out in the open, especially at dangerous times of night.

Drocera lifts up an arm, stifling a cough as he passes by a bulky machine spewing dirty air out into the street. He's not even sure why he's here himself when he should be back in his village working. After all, he hasn't quite gotten the hang of magic yet, and in a dangerous place like The City, he'd likely need it at some point.

His first impression of The City is mostly negative; it's crowded, claustrophobic, noisy, and dirty. The puddles of stagnant water at his feet draw out unpleasant expressions of disgust each time he steps in one without realizing where he was going, and the thin strips of cloth around his ankles are beginning to acquire a dark gray color from the many times he pauses to wipe his feet dry on them. There are few people out and about, but most seem to ignore him if he keeps his head down and stays quiet, so much of his exploring goes without incident.

Upon reaching a less populated part of The City, Drocera will slow down to a stop, looking around. There's not much around save for some loud machinery next to a brick building spewing off steam. A light post is next to it all, illuminating the surrounding areas like a miniature sun. The young man draws closer to the mechanical mess, pacing around it in a small circle as he attempts to make sense of what all these metal things are even for. But no matter, there's a thin strip of dirt between it and the building it's next to, so taking another quick look around, he'll creep close to it, getting down to his knees so he can poke at the hard, depleted soil to try to loosen it up a bit. Every few moments he cautiously glances over his shoulder. He's not damaging the machinery, but anyone can easily make the assumption that he's sabotaging it, and that's not a situation he wishes to find himself in (that'll be the plants' job, long after he's gone. provided they can even grow in places like this anymore).

It looked like another quiet night in The City at first glance, though it was only considered a quiet night if open war didn't break out in the streets. Thieves and burglars were roaming the rooftops as usual, searching wealthy homes in hopes of finding easy coin while avoiding the sharp, watchful eyes of the City Watch patrolling the streets and wealthier homes. A few civilians were walking the streets, a wary look ever present in their eyes and on the lookout for muggers and crooks that might threaten them. Among these civilians were also the various religious orders, mostly keeping to their districts and away from each other (much to the relief of the City Watch, brawls that broke out when these groups met were always a mess to deal with). The Keepers had sent many of their members out into the streets and rooftops, prowling around as though looking for something. Observers were out and about, keeping an eye on the City before returning to the Library to report their findings. The City whispered hushed rumors of spotting a shadowy figure watching from the rooftops, vanishing when they tried to get a better look. Some were hooded, and others masked. Between the keepers actively seeking something in the City as well as the threatened Pagans, Hammerites, and new Mechanists struggling for control, the state of the City seemed fragile and delicate, as though order could collapse with a gust of wind. There was one masked Keeper lurking in an alley between a boarded up home and a shabby store closed for the night. His faintly glowing eyes peering out into the streets as well as the light glow of the streetlights reflecting off his iron mask were only features showing up in the inky black alleyway, as his pitch black uniform made him blend in with the shadows easily. This district of The City was not as thickly populated as the other districts such as Stonemarket, but there was still a fair amount of people walking by, forcing the man to stay tucked away into the dark. His job was easier than some of the other keepers' jobs: He simply needed to be nearby in case trouble started up for the others. He was no observer or scribe, so he did not need to commit himself to carefully watching the citizens and the general balance of the City. As such, he finds himself shifting in place restlessly. There hasn't been any trouble for the other Keepers yet, and it looks like it may be another night of his waiting around the streets until daybreak. He finds himself comparing his current task to the various guards and Watch officers put on night duty, waiting around all night for days with nothing to do. 'It would not be so bad if trouble were to occur...' he thinks to himself. 'Minimal troubles between Hammerites and Pagans would not affect much, after all.' Despite his wishful thinking though, the night seems to drag on. It's getting uncomfortable lurking in this alley, and the Enforcer is continuing to get antsy waiting about. He'll need to move out of his alley soon before his bored shifting attracts unwanted attention.
