Hi Diane, I really want to sell my writing independently, rather than through Amazon, and you're one of the only writers I know who does. Do you have any advice for setting up something like ebooksdirect, or is that something that requires specialised knowledge and an existing readerbase to be feasible? (no worries if you can't get to this question, I know you get a lot)
Off hand I'd say that Ebooks Direct would not work at all if I didn't already have a readerbase* that knows what I do. So if you don't already have that, I'm not at all sure I can recommend this particular style of going indie (or hybrid-indie).
It's also a lot of work running your own online sales space. And in terms of server space, website management, and so forth, it runs into pretty serious money, over time. Which (from month to month, freelancing being what it is) you can't always be sure you'll have. Plus it takes up valuable time that you could also be using to write, and which you will always grudge having to spend. Around here that means "On average, an hour or two a day..." —and then to the people who say "That doesn't sound like much," one adds "... for fifteen years." ...Those hours pile up.
If you're just getting started, what I would strongly recommend is that you build your sales as best you can on one or more of the online platforms—obviously choosing the one(s) least objectionable to you—and at the same time work to build a mailing list to whom you can regularly market your work via newsletter. Much further down the line would be the time for you to think about a bookstore of your own... by which time (who knows?) the independent publishing field may have done what it loves to do, and changed shape once again into something none of us could have predicted. (Insert eyeroll here.)
In any case: good luck with your marketing... but much more importantly, with your writing! Because an online bookstore has to have something in it... and something that people like to read. Let creating that writing be by far your first and most important concern. :)
*I should really correct that to say "a number of readerbases", as due to the no-internet state of the world prevailing during my first couple decades' work, most of my readerships are very "siloed" and tend to know me for only one thing. The Star Trek readers tend not to know about the LGBTQ adult fantasy: the Young Wizards readers tend not to know about the very assorted MCU and DCU fiction, and so on, among all the possible permutations of I-never-knew-she-wrote-any-of-THAT!. It's almost as if nobody ever goes to one's website to find out whether their favorite [insert genre here] author does something else besides what one already knows them for.
Meanwhile, I'm just grateful for the many who remember my name, :)

Ooh, what a suspiciously perfect opportunity to plug my own books! It's almost like the Tumblr algorithm is monitoring me in the pervasive and slightly sinister style of late-stage Surveillance Capitalism! Handy!
Anyhow, anyone looking for books with well-developed fat characters - especially fantasy and sci-fi books - should check out Small Infinities and Short Eternities, my two recently-released collections, available at https://www.lulu.com/spotlight/pvtims/
Small Infinities has stories about street magicians arranged into warring factions like medieval guilds, scientists accidentally unlocking the secrets of infinite energy and destroying the global economy, living chess pieces solving film noir murder mysteries and 20,000-year intergenerational quests for Enlightment. Short Eternities skews much darker, with stories about literal world-trees dying with the coming of cosmic winter, drugs that judge their users, sadistic dystopias based on pinball games, and infinite hotels that occasionally eat their guests. What they both have in common is a relative abundance of plus-size characters with a variety of different backgrounds and properly-developed personalities. Cards on the table, most of them are love interests or fill other romantic roles, because, y'know, fat admirer. I didn't set out to 'do representation', I'm just a dude with a fetish. But I'm also a good writer, so it's kind of impossible for me to write a character whose solely there to be objectified: I end up elevating them whether I intend to or not. Arr, 'tis a curse to be this good at my job, truly it is!
Anyway, I've already given the link, so knock yerselves out. Or don't, and I'll just keep beavering away in obscurity. Whatevs.
whenever i read a book i run a little quiz and the only questions are 1. is there a fat character? and if so 2. is that fat character written respectfully (not treated as comedic relief, not described in clearly disgust-inflected ways)?
few books clear the first bar, and very very few of those even come close to clearing the second.

i saw a post saying boom was good bc it feels like it could be done with any doctor/companion duo and honestly that was one of the things i felt was wrong with it
#in a show with a title character that could be Literally Anyone and a companion sharing the lead that could be Literally Anyone#i value the little moments that set this duo apart from the rest. ESPECIALLY when it comes to returning writers like rtd/moff#fifteen and ruby felt a little too eleven/twelve and clara adjacent in boom. in both their dialogue and characterization#space babies also landed a little weird at first bc it lifted a bit from end of the world BUT the scenes that fifteen and ruby#had to themselves. like ruby getting covered in snot and fifteen laughing. or fifteen and ruby looking after the Space Babies#or fifteen going out of his way to save the monster bc that monster is the only one of its kind Just Like Him Fr#that stuff is so good and its also something we haven't seen from another nuwho doctor. the vulnerable bleeding-heart empathy#and a dynamic w a companion that is basically 'two troublemakers that just deeply love fun and adventure and getting into trouble together'#oh yeah and also the devil's chord was peak fiction because it touches on fifteen's renewed connection and love for humanity#and marries it to ruby being a musician and how music like any art is the expression of the human soul etc etc#WHAT MAKES A DOCTOR WHO STORY GOOD TO ME IS PARTLY HOW THE PREMISE TIES INTO THE DOCTOR AND COMPANION'S CHARACTERS#IT HAS TO FEEL LIKE IT WAS TAILOR MADE TO THEM. ELSE IT WONT LAND RIGHT TO ME#i hate the take that they should've saved wild blue yonder for a fifteen episode bc#the tension is hinged on how well the doctor/companion know each other. u have a level of it that u can ONLY get#with fourteen and donna who are two halves of a whole soul but have also spent much more time missing the other than knowing them#im not rewatching fifteen's eps rn until a week later when i can watch it w my qpp but#rn i still feel a stronger sense of fifteen and ruby's characters from all the rtd-written eps rather moffat#which like. i get that a lot of that is my personal dislike of moffat's writing style but still#dr who#15 era#dw spoilers

i think the greatest betrayal i felt was when my brother told me he’s used ai to write this children’s story/podcast thing he was working on. like my guy you used to draw your own art!! how can you think that’s okay!!
#i love him but i can’t talk about that with him or i’ll get mad 😭#made me realize my family isn’t aware of my hobby aside from??? my sister and mom i think bc my immediate thought was i could’ve helped#but i don’t think my brother knows i even write#but bottom line if you’re using ai then you might as well use a ghost writer and pay a human being#and this rant began bc of that post about using ai to rp#like no one is perfect at writing and some of us ( me ) weren’t good at it at first — it takes time to develop your style and get comfy#so take that time! it’s so much fun! and rewarding!#okay rant over adfhjk i’ll be heading home soon!#get ready to ramble | ooc

trying to get back into reading so i bought a couple books from barnes and noble. one in particular SCREAMS booktok cringe but i can’t lie, it intrigues me so i will read it and see if it’s actually good or not
#the book is dedicated to ‘’’’those who can’t help falling in love with the villain’’’’ which is fucking. cringe as shit and annoying#but at the same time i fit the description so 💀 who am i to be uppity about it#the author also refers to sex scenes as ‘spicy’ which is a term i ALSO find extremely fucking annoying but. again we shall see#i got a special edition that has an extra sex scene as like a ‘deleted scene/bonus feature’ which honestly i Do think rocks so#i need to read this for research#to base what is normal/acceptable for typical modern day writers#bc the last books i ever ‘read’ were for high school so they were all like Classics#so i need to base things off of something closer to my writing level/style#i’m not trying to write a masterpiece here vomd is literally an homage to trashy 2000s movies okay#anyways. will update#idk if i should tag the book name or not since i’ve already called it cringe and i haven’t even read it. i don’t like being mean#i’ll tag it later if it’s good so i can properly retract my comments#into the microphone

omg chat why is writing kinda hard???
ok so this is a bit of an aside (warning: this post is long) but @348kg and i talked about this and honestly writing fanfics is a way for us to express ourselves creatively while using our idols as inspo for our work. and it’s fun most of the time.. but like honestly, 70-80% of the time, writing is hard. it’s not easy, like… it’s actually quite hard work.
and i know everyone has seen posts of like “pls reblog instead of just silently reading” or “pls like at least to show your appreciation” etc etc etc and ur probs sick of hearing it but like, it’s so true???
writing is honestly hard. and for most of us fanfic writers.. im sure you know but we have lives outside of our blogs. we are students, or we work normal jobs, we have life responsibilities, we have problems to deal with, and yet somewhere in between our busy lives we manage to find the time to sit down and create these pieces of writing for you, the reader, to read.
and tbh, i don’t really know where im going with this? i just want to let you know this: a typical 1-2k words one-shot probably takes me around 2-3 hours to write (on average, on a good day - sometimes longer or shorter). but it takes you maybe 10-15 mins, at most 30 mins to read depending on your reading speed. isn’t the time gap a little wild 🫠 on a typical work day, i get home from work at about 6, i cook myself dinner and eat, i shower and clean up, and if i know im writing that night, i make sure to clear my schedule (ie no overtime, no phone calls to friends or parents etc) and i sit on my laptop and write from about 10ish to about midnight. then i pause and i edit, and set things up to get ready post (think: pictures, title, word count, writing the warnings, summary, doing the tags) and by the time i post, it’s probably 1am.
i breathe a sigh of relief because it feels good! it feels really good to release my labour of love (literally) out into the world. and honestly, you know who you are, but those of you who constantly read and reblog my work, i see u!! (Alexa play i see u by p1harmony) and those who leave comments or reviews in the tags, i also see u (that’s why i like to reblog and respond to your tags too)!! it honestly brings me so much joy when someone comes and talks to me about something i wrote and how it made them feel. or even when someone recommends a fic i wrote. all these things that are so little and take so little of your time actually mean so much to me and im sure other writers as well.
and so i guess what im trying to say to everyone is: if you are a fic reader, if you read any fics, i just want you to know that the fic you loved reading took the writer a lot of resources to write (brain power, creativity and importantly time). i hope this gives u an insight into the process of a writer/writing a fic because im hoping it might help with whether or not you decide to hit that like or reblog or comment button in the near future!!
(also, i think it’s a shame that as writers sometimes we have to compromise on what we actually want to write vs what to write to get more engagement, likes, rbs etc. personally i have been writing on tumblr since 2020 on and off so ive been on here for four years now and i have a good sense of what is a good formula for a “successful” fic - usually it’s smut, usually it’s for the most popular member in terms of fic reading, and usually it’s of a certain length posted around a certain time etc etc. but i guess i don’t rly care anymore bc im a kinda old tumblr writer who isn’t bothered about the notes as much as i am just grateful for the little comments people send me saying that what i wrote made them feel seen or resonated with them. cos i think that is priceless 🥹)
PS. in no way am i complaining about the engagement or lack thereof that i personally get, nor am i complaining about the mere fact that writing is hard bc yes i am aware that i wanted to write in the first place and so it was my decision haha
#i wanted to do an ot6 fic by the end of tonight and i ONLY wrote jiung and felt bad about it T_T#but yeah#writing is hard ig#also to cover my ass i am not complaining just to be clear#I’m just stating that yeah i wanted to get fics out earlier rather than later but sometimes it’s just hard and life gets in the way#if you’re one of my mutuals on here u might know this but there’s some other external stuff going on in my life rn#which is making me like not as free to write essentially#and i really wanted to write something this weekend but I didn’t manage to so I am kinda disappointed in myself ngl#but#we live and we learn#and at least the blog got a face lift :)#I’m gonna keep working on the ot6 piece tho cos it’s rly fun#1 down#5 to go haha#good night friends#I hope ur having good weeks#don’t be too harsh on urself like I am bahaha#p1harmony writers#piwon writers#kpop writers#p1harmony fanfic#piwon fanfic#Kpop fanfic#shoutout to my readers#shoutout to my moots <3#I love you all actually#sending you a jiung style greeting AKA I’m keeping you all in my heart#*pounds chest cutely yet aggressively*#rach 💭

You write so that your favorite actor will one day star in an adaptation of your book.
I write so that an adaptation of my work gets featured on Film Theory.
We are not the same.

I’m to punch your writing bad vibes so get your butt ready.
To be slightly personal, your writing has been one of my inspirations for a while now. If I had to describe your style, it doesn’t dip into overly flowery purple prose that makes it difficult to tell what is going on, but it's meaty enough to put me into a character’s shoes and really give me a sense for the emotions they feel and why they feel that way. Little details like usage of punctuation, bolds, italics, caps, etc. truly sell your muses as their own person, complete with distinct voices. These little things may go unnoticed, but to me, It’s the little things like these that really show how much care and effort you put into your writing.
And generally, it really gives me motivation to sit down and write, whether it’s for a reply or something personal.
Your writing is very satisfying to read, and I know I’ve said it multiple times before, but it has truly opened my eyes to characters I would have normally been apprehensive or understood little about if not for you. There’s something about how you write P5 related content that makes me wish you were in charge of the game. You really hit all the things I enjoy about the game and seamlessly incorporate it to your writing, as well as improve its shortcomings.
(To be slightly personal again, your enthusiasm for this game, through IC content or OOC posts, is one of the reasons why I’ve been able to slowly come up with ideas on how to slap my P4 muses into P5, but more importantly, enjoy the game for what it is. Without you, I have no doubts that it would have taken me much longer to appreciate it.)
Of course, your writing achieving this effect would not be possible without your understanding of the game, its themes and its characters. Not just P5, mind you. P4, too. Despite me knowing the events of the game almost by heart, you always bring up something fresh about it that makes me view it in a new light and keep the P4 era going in my heart, and by P4 era, I mostly mean Naoto.
I know you’ll make me fall in love with P3 all over again soon, so I’m looking forward to that :^)
There is a lot more for me to say, you being a cherished friend is one of them, and also that you are a horrible little gremlin for encouraging my illness known as Naoto Disease, just to name a few things, but that’s for a later date, since I don’t want to make this ask stretch on for miles.
PS remember that I won’t stop loving you dani-lion xoxo
((You are a damn good, genuine friend, Liz. I needed to hear this.))
#out of cards#mun stuff#chibitantei#long post#((....I really have nothing I can say to this#there have been times recently where I get too into my head about my blogs here and whether or not my writing has been bland or boring#and I let it get to me...which then kills my motivation to write anything#whether it's long form or something short#I don't feel like I'm portraying their voice the way they want me to or I'm doing a horrible job characterizing them#it's an internal struggle because then I have my logical side start fighting this emotional side#I know it's just me letting my thoughts get to me but man...it tires me out when I'm fighting with myself#this is a hobby and it's supposed to be fun; that's what I remember at the end of it all#I think I just let my perfectionist side get to me sometimes because there's a lot of amazing writers here#and I feel like I have to keep up with them in order to be seen as a good writer#including you Liz#your writing style and characterization have been an inspiration to me as well; from the time I first delved into Persona RPC#I needed this...I really needed to hear this so thank you so much for punching the bad vibes and negativity#I know I put this all in tags but...thanks to anyone who happens to read all of these#we'll be back to the regularly scheduled shenanigans and fluff and angsty-riddled threads#but again thank you thank you THANK YOU Liz; you know I love you so so much as my friend and the friendship we have is so important to me#I won't let these writing bad vibes stick around <3))

@salsakiyoomi
sukuna ryomen is somewhat of an infamous bachelor.
it’s not surprising to see him with a new beau every few months, if not weeks — almost trope-like in their frequency, his image bouncing between playboy and manwhore. he doesn’t take it personally, and he makes sure to let people know: he’s young and sexy and he has two oscars, for fuck’s sake, so he thinks the world can cut him some slack when he wants to mess around. and mess around he does.
between obvious paparazzi shots of panties tucked badly into his back pocket, and instagram posts with fellow actors and models pressed tightly against his chest, most are divided between thinking it’s either damn good pr, or a simple man living a life most would wish for. regardless, nobody is surprised when sukuna arrives alone at the mugler show for paris fashion week, and leaves with someone on his arm.
the only thing that came as a bolt from the blue was that it was you hanging from him.
the photos are undeniable, a story in parts; sukuna finding his seat in the front row, you on one side and kendall jenner on his other. his eyes drifting from the models to your face, as if taking a clandestine peek. you, meeting his underhanded gaze with a smile as sweet as spun sugar — and, gasp, sukuna returning it. the display is so out of character for him it feels almost voyeuristic to see it plastered all over twitter.
you, with your vintage, girl-next-door-esque image, big hair and big eyes and demure, calf-length hems, a voice that evokes the memory of helen forrest or ella fitzgerald. him, with his smudged eyeliner and tattoos and all-black attire, persistently typecasted as the panty-dropping bad-boy or devil-smiled brute. it shouldn’t work. for all intents and purposes, he should be spotted with a new supermodel the next week, leaving you in the dust of his philandering. most expect it, wait for the other boot to drop — expect an album of heartbreak from you, but—
a month passes. and another, and another. and suddenly sukuna ryomen, notorious rake, is photographed backstage at your shows. suddenly there’s an anklet hanging from your ankle, his initials in garnet. it’s early morning paparazzi pictures of you both in sweatpants and hoodies — yours, suspiciously oversized — one of his hands engulfing yours, the other holding a bag of takeout from a local breakfast spot, a lit cigarette in his mouth. hickies on your neck and a shit-eating grin on sukuna’s face. candid snaps taken at intimately sized parties, with his chin hooked over your shoulder and his large hands cupping your stomach. tiktoks of you both on the red carpet in the background of somebody else’s interview, sukuna leaning in close to brush an eyelash from your cheek.
neither of you confirm anything, but then — you don’t need to, do you?
#i love this idea and au so much and it’s so well written#i love the blend of hollywood and suggestiveness and plot#your writing style is so beautiful and i can literally picture everything#it fits everyone especially him so so so good#you’re such a talented writer

Truth be told I do write too(not of my dreams thou just sharing), well more like roleplay as I do rp quite often with ocs of mine with some of my friends and if I'm not rping it's me brainstorming/visualizing worldbuilding ideas and character designs. Sometimes its random worldbuilding ideas that so happen to cross my mind and other times it's for my oc and how I could improve it. I'm no artist I'm leaning on more on the writing side.
Also once again I don't mind reading your wall of texts all that much, small response or big response I still read them and go over what to say.
Also again yes I do like the drawing you have made of me, I didn't mention this but I do gave a fursona thats gonna have a redesign in the soon to be future. I'll most likely share it with you before and after redesign.
-❄️☕️
Oh!!!! I roleplay too 😭 I have a friend who’s been my partner since I was 14 and I talk to her nearly every day. Our ocs are so intertwined i can’t imagine her being in love with anyone but her oc. Anyways that’s actually where my girl Melody comes from!! Here’s a picture of my first drawing of her and a more recent one I hadn’t finished. Plus my current oc for COD named “Critter” :)

So I totally get that!! My best writing comes out with my bestie ♥️ I really should do more world building myself but I’m happy just figuring it out as I go along. 😅 my friend is more planned. It’s super funny we wrote so well together despite my own inability to be prepared but she tells me I am an excellent writer so I guess it really is a balance. I’m a big fan of being dramatic in threes. It’s one thing I always include in my writing. I don’t do environments well but I think my dialogue is okay 🥳 but yes I draw my ocs when I make them !! Here’s a few more 🩷

As for your fursona!!! I’d be delighted !!! To see what it looks like before and after 🥰 see what you’re all about. Oh like the animal!!! I technically have a little bunny character I made but it’s not like a fursona 🤔the original I made for a roblox game decal and then I made another for myself based on Melody’s design. You can tell a lot about a person based on their persona/fursona. Mines a clown (the middle photo! Obviously I already mentioned her before) she’s had a lot of deign changes and the clown is my favorite !!

But i do wanna ask, what type of world do you create? Magical! Realistic? Mechanical? Futuristic Something all together new? 🥰 I’ve heard from friends about some of their worlds and there always so unique
#do you get friends to draw your ocs or commission ? :) I try to draw my own stuff cause I can’t afford to pay people for things#so I put in the effort even 😭 if I don’t wanna#fun fact ! Melody is my oldest ocs and she’s my everything#I’d ask to ready anything but I figure it’s probably private right ? 😭 I get embarrassed by how into the roleplay writing I get#my personal writing isn’t as good 🤔 I bet you’re a very nice writer#mys mail 💌#hehe I love seeing my art side by side cause you can tell I have a style

Writing Intimacy
i often see writers sharing a sentiment of struggling with writing kiss scenes which honestly bleeds into other portrayals of physical intimacy. i see it a lot in modernized styles of writing popularized by the recent trend in publishing to encourage short, choppy sentences and few adverbs, even less descriptive language. this makes intimacy come across awkward, like someone writing a script or clumsy recounting of events rather than a beautiful paragraph of human connection.
or just plane horniness. but hey, horny doesn't have to be mutually exclusive with poetic or sensual.
shallow example: they kissed desperately, tongues swirling and she moaned. it made her feel warm inside.
in depth example: she reached for the other woman slowly and with a small measure of uncertainty. the moment her fingers brushed the sharp, soft jaw of her companion, eliza's hesitance slid away. the first kiss was gentle when she finally closed the distance between them. she pressed her lips lightly to gabriella's in silent exploration. a tender question. gabriella answered by meeting her kiss with a firmer one of her own. eliza felt the woman's fingers curling into her umber hair, fingernails scraping along her scalp. everything inside eliza relaxed and the nervousness uncoiled from her gut. a warm buzz of energy sunk through her flesh down to the very core of her soul. this was right. this was always where she needed to be.
the first complaint i see regards discomfort in writing a kiss, feeling like one is intruding on the characters. the only way to get around this is to practice. anything that makes you uncomfortable in writing is something you should explore. writing is at its best when we are pushing the envelope of our own comfort zones. if it feels cringy, if it feels too intimate, too weird, too intrusive, good. do it anyway! try different styles, practice it, think about which parts of it make you balk the most and then explore that, dissect it and dive into getting comfortable with the portrayal of human connection.
of course the biggest part comes to not knowing what to say other than "they kissed" or, of course, the tried and true "their lips crashed and their tongues battled for dominance" 😐. so this is my best advice: think beyond the mouth. okay, we know their mouths are mashing. but what are their hands doing? are they touching one another's hair? are they scratching or gripping desperately at one another? are they gliding their hands along each other's body or are they wrapping their arms tightly to hold each other close? do they sigh? do they groan? do they relax? do they tense? are they comfortable with each other or giddy and uncertain? is it a relief, or is it bringing more questions? is it building tension or finally breaking it?
get descriptive with the emotions. how is it making the main character/pov holder feel? how are they carrying those emotions in their body? how do they feel the desire in their body? desire is not just felt below the belt. it's in the gut, it's in the chest, it's in the flushing of cheeks, the chills beneath the skin, the goosebumps over the surface of the flesh. everyone has different pleasure zones. a kiss might not always lead desire for overtly sexual touches. a kiss might lead to the desire for an embrace. a kiss might lead to the impulse to bite or lick at other areas. a kiss could awaken desire to be caressed or caress the neck, the shoulder, the back, the arms etc. describe that desire, show those impulses of pleasure and affection.
of course there is the tactile. what does the love interest taste like? what do they smell like? how do they kiss? rough and greedy? slow and sensual? explorative and hesitant? expertly or clumsily? how does it feel to be kissed by them? how does it feel to kiss them?
i.e. examine who these individuals are, what their motives and feelings are within that moment, who they are together, what it looks like when these two individuals come together. a kiss is not about the mouth. it's about opening the door to vulnerability and desire in one's entire body and soul.
