so one of the suggestions he gave me was to talk more abt athena bc i just focused on odysseus and poseidon n like i still like that perspective from my og paper but im working on outlining it and including more of the warrior of the mind motif
and i will admit the reason i was so narrowed in on odysseus and poseidon is bc when i think of athena n odysseus i go insane n want to make this paper abt them being foils in both the odyssey and epic but i have to focus on my point instead,,, maybe ill just write a lil essay on them for fun after the ithaca saga drops. unclear
(also i probably will keep up the og paper but if anyone also wants to see the revised version… i may find a better way than copy-pasting it to tumblr lmao)
i’m like done with most of the major projects i have to turn in for finals so im looking at the revisions my professor has offered for my paper on epic n like. i do need to ask if its worth my time to basically rewrite this whole paper when i got a 90/100 but like… am i doing it for the grade or for the love of the craft
given i wanna do it before next thurs i think the answer is the grade but its also for the craft

content creation --> scientific articles
ever since quarantine started, i feel like i’ve been consuming a lot more small-user created content than ever. you know, like podcasts and youtube videos. and also sometimes some interesting blogs and etc too. and since then i’ve been infested with this bug. it’s called “i wanna do it too”
wait rewind, that bug probably popped up earlier when i was being all mopey about my ugrad degree and wondering what i wanted to do in life before i realized it was research and i needed a graduate degree for that. but it was part of my whiney “why can’t i be a twitch streamer and make money that way” rant time before i got it together and realized 1) i’m really REALLY astronomically bad at video games. like the only game i really enjoy and play regularly is...sudoku. heh. and 2) as a female identifying person, i’m not comfortable with the stereotypical “show off your assets” kind of streaming. and 3) i’m not really sure i have a “on camera” comfortable type personality.
like, presenting in public/getting called on randomly in class to answer something is one of my worst nightmares. case in point today, my prof was asking about something i definitely know (considering i took ~3 classes on the topic and it’s something i’m interested to the point of nearly involving it in my thesis) but as soon as he called my name it’s like my mind went completely blank and i became the human embodiment of potato that i always fear people think i am. in contrast, my bf was also called on in class today, but i know for a fact up until he heard his name, he was browsing reddit, and then pulled a long, eloquent, and complete answer for the question asked out of his borthole. like. how even do you.
but back to the main topic, though it’s something i’m not sure i could pull off i keep getting ideas for podcasts popping into my head. and also, i 3000% do NOT have the time for any other hobbies right now. so maybe one day this can come true. or someone could point me in the direction of such podcasts that exist so that i can enjoy them. or if someone makes them please tell me so i can listen and subscribe!
but. the ideas. so i can at least look back in a few years on the thoughts of my wild grad school mind.
a podcast that’s basically a broadcasted journal club. people from different backgrounds (or not) pick articles all pertaining to the same overall topic and share and discuss them in relation to their background. could be a revolving door type of guest situation with a couple of constant hosts and very academic.
or same idea but the point is to explain everything to the host who’s a funny dude/great interviewer and makes sure that the common person could listen and appreciate the topic fully (kind of like ologies with alie ward but about specific journal articles so a bit more niche. or bad science.)
a podcast that goes through articles with their authors (main or a combo) so that their expertise can really be shown. i think this would be especially cool if you have younger (student) authors because it gives them a chance to present their work in a medium where they’re not meant to be explaining it to their peers but to the more common person so that they can share kind of why they’re doing the work they are and what excites them about it.
churning out articles for scientific journals is a form of content creation that perhaps the general public overlooks. who reads scientific journals other than the people most interested in the field because they work in it/do research in it/have to for classes?
to me, the moment when i started being able to read journal articles in my field and truly understand what they were talking about and see the use of the research is when the whole “academia thing” really hit home for me. it gave me such joy(?) to feel like my entire brain was participating in digesting the information. i think there’s a certain kind of desire i feel that other people can experience that too because, lets be real, in these times of grad school + apocalypse, that joy was the first happiness i felt in months lol.
and aside from that joy of reading and understanding, i really really REALLY feel a push to finally publish something of my own. it is so extremely frustrating to me that i worked in a lab for several years in undergrad but i never got the chance to publish or have my name listed on an article ever. i was blessed with the opportunity to get autonomy in that as an undergrad i was given my own project to head and work on by myself. i got to learn how to operate a linear accelerator and prepare and run samples in it! (with help, of course) but my project was one of those projects where the result “isn’t publishable”. there’s a push in science it seems to publish positive results. i had a result with my project, but it was confirmation of something being impossible - kind of the opposite of publishable. i put a load of blood, sweat, and tears into that project and it really really hurt to not get anything out of it.
well i did get something - i learned how to self-motivate to research, how to prepare for and run a project, and how to stick it through to the end. but it still stung not to be able to get a paper out of it.
i saw a tweet the other day of someone who got their first DOI tattooed on them. that’s the kind of pride i know i’ll have when i finally get my first. whether their first or hundredth paper, the way that tweet went viral is how every academic should be valued for their work.
this post took a left turn from where it started and i changed the title three times over the course of writing this but...it makes sense in a way doesn’t it?
academic articles are content that has been created. it doesn’t get the same hype as more fast paced and interactive media such as a stream, but it has its place in the world.
especially today in where the US has such an unbelievably divided opinion on the veracity of SCIENCE, it feels like time to make the love of research and its usefulness more...mainstream? i don’t know the right word or phrase for it, but definitely i think appreciation and belief and the ability to trust data is something we could use more of today.
it’s a complicated issue when you get into the politics of publishing and funding, but at the end of the day as a whole, you just kind of have to trust that the academic/research system wants to put out good data and learn new things that could bring about improvements in the way we live our lives.
content creation. research. science. articles. appreciation. application.
there’s an end point to this post somewhere. i think i’ll make it this period.

38 Experts Share the Worst Content Marketing Advice
Tumblr media
General Success Tips / Content Marketing World / Productivity / Speaker Advice 38 Experts Share the Worst Content Marketing Advice It’s graduation season, the time of year when advice abounds But let’s be honest, not all advice given to new grads, new employees, or even seasoned professionals is worth following We asked the experts presenting at Content Marketing World 2019 to share the worst content marketing advice they ever received or heard They had a lot to say The thoughts they share form a don’t-do-this guide covering everything from strategy and SEO to quantity and quality Just do it Something is better than nothing This belief is detrimental to businesses As soon as you hear yourself say, “this will do,” or “let’s just get this sent out,” you’re in trouble Posting something average, be it an email, social post, or blog is just going to put people off from wanting to read your content in a depreciating cycle. – Andrew Pickering and Peter Gartland , founders, Andrew and Pete Don’t write it down We don’t need to create a content marketing strategy Our president (vice president of business development) has it in his/her head He/she tells us who to target and what to write – Achinta Mitra , president, Tiecas Inc Make it up as you go Get started and figure it out as you go I can’t think of another strategic business discipline where people are so comfortable with a dabble approach. It’s the fastest way to spending money with no return – and a great way to discourage your marketing staff, too. – Sarah Mitchell , founder, Typeset Give them a taste first “Let’s just test it”“We’re looking for the appetite”“We just need to prove it works so let’s just get some stuff up there” I dread sentences like those Unless a brand has a clear reason why it’s creating content, it won’t stick, no matter how much glue you use – Ahava Leibtag , president, Aha Media Group Create it now Create content before gaining enough insights into what buyers want – George Stenitzer , founder and chief content officer, Crystal Clear Communications Write and distribute first My pet peeve is when people are told to start with their tactics and channels How can you know HOW and WHERE before you know WHO and WHAT? – Michael Weiss , vice president, Creative Circle Go for clicks Getting the click is enough Content should drive a specific change in thinking in behavior after the click That’s the real goal – Tamsen Webster , founder and chief message strategist, Find The Red Thread Sell, sell, sell Nothing raises my hackles like overtly sales-focused advertising positioned as content marketing I know sales are often the end goal, but content marketing should employ a light touch and soft sell — if there’s any attempt to sell at all – Amanda Changuris , manager, social media marketing, AAA – The Auto Club Group Fill up the funnel When you reduce content marketing solely to working people through the sales funnel, you lose a big opportunity to build a true relationship Marketers who think that content is all about revenue haven’t walked a day in their customers’ shoes It’s about helping first, and then the sale will come – Carla Johnson , speaker, author, storyteller Pick the demand-gen lane only Content marketing is just a demand generation thing It is, of course, fantastic for that But to limit content to that single swim lane is to miss a huge opportunity: content for brand creation, positioning, and audience building By all means, pour awesome content into the revenue machine But save some budget for big things: Celebrate your beliefs Demonstrate your values Walk your talk – Doug Kessler , co-founder, Velocity Partners Don’t think selling Content marketing isn’t about selling Oh, yes it is It’s about selling helpful ideas that lead people naturally to seek to solve their problems with what your product enables to gain value (business outcomes) that wasn’t attainable before – Ardath Albee , CEO and B2B marketing strategist, Marketing Interactions Inc Treat content like ads Content marketing can be measured the same as advertising It can be measured, but not in the same way as advertising Just like you don’t measure sprints and marathons the same way, you have to consider that content marketing is the long game and has longer lasting effect – A Lee Judge , co-founder and chief marketing officer, Content Monsta Show perfection I once heard someone say every piece of content put out by a brand should look perfect, like an ad. Know what people love to ignore? – Adam Ritchie , principal, Adam Ritchie Brand Direction Think marketing first To think of content marketing as marketing rather than content It’s always content first if you want to make something that is going to resonate In a race to stand out from the pack, marketers are often told to adopt a specific storytelling tactic before they’ve worked out the story This will lead to weak executions Determine the story first and then develop the best way to tell that story – Annie Granatstein , head of WP BrandStudio, The Washington Post Follow the crowd Blanket statements made about what strategy, topics, format, length, etc, that all marketers should follow Just because some people – or even a lot of them – are seeing success with account-based marketing or video or (insert hot trend) does not mean it’s right for your business challenge, audience, etc – Carmen Hill , principal strategist and writer, CHILL Content Do what the other monkey does To pursue a strategy or tactic because another brand had success with it You know what they say about mutual funds? “Past performance is no guarantee of future results” Be different And figure out what works from those different things – Dennis Shiao , consultant, Dennis Shiao Consulting Stay in the successful comfort zone “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it” can be good advice, but, if you follow it for too long, it can mean you’re creating ho-hum, boring, additive content Sometimes you do need to move out of your comfort zone and break your content mold in order to refresh your audience’s brand connection – Erika Heald , marketing consultant, Erika Heald Consulting Do what the data says Having a blind “data-is-everything” mentality Is it even the right data? Ask better questions to make sure what you’re looking at is meaningful And let’s find the big human stories IN the data They are there and it’s our job to tell them in creative ways No great marketing video gets shared over and over by customers with a header, “Hey man, check out these emotionally compelling pieces of data!” You’re in the storytelling business – data is just part of how we get there – Kathy Klotz-Guest , founder, Keeping it Human Take the easier route Focus on the “low-hanging fruit” first Anyone can tackle the easy stuff If you want to position you or your company as a thought leader, you’ve got to put content out there that helps your customers solve problems that no one else can help them solve That’s not easy That’s not low-hanging fruit – Courtney Cox Wakefield , group manager, digital marketing, Children’s Health Snack it Focus on snackable content For a long time, this advice led to a lethal form of reductionism that slowed many content marketers from mastering long form, which has implications for mastering the integration relationship between shorter and longer form content and for understanding how to make short-form, high-impact content – Carlos Abler , leader of content marketing strategy, 3M Pick one format Focus all of your energy on one form of content (mainly video) Spending some energy on different forms of content helps keep your content fresh and on multiple platforms where different audiences can find you – Jason Schemmel , Twitch streamer and digital marketer, GSDChat Make moving content More video Basically, it’s the suggestion to do a tactic because it’s a trend without actually planning strategy around content The tactic-first advice is short-sighted Planning a content strategy as it aligns to business objectives, the customer journey, and buyer personas will produce content that is much more apt to increase engagement and subsequently increase revenue And yes, video may be part of the content strategy – Pamela Muldoon , campaign and content strategist, The Pedowitz Group Optimize for SEO To spend a ton of time writing blogs that are SEO optimized If you write good content that is relevant to your brand and current events, you will naturally start to rank higher in Google search – Griffin Thall , CEO and co-founder, PuraVida Bracelets Stuff it You should target x number of keywords per page – Wil Reynolds , founder, Seer Interactive Base keywords on available data sources Advice I frequently hear around topic/keyword research The troubling advice involves relying on data sources that use paid advertising data, inaccurate organic search volume metrics, and heavily outdated/sampled static databases to drive content and editorial decisions. Starting with flawed metrics leads to inappropriate expectations and content that isn’t differentiated. – Jeff Coyle , co-founder and chief product officer, MarketMuse Don’t worry about keywords SEO keywords don’t matter (This advice) stems from the technology advances Google made with RankBrain, its machine learning algorithm Google looks at ideas and concepts on a page, not necessarily keywords The reality is that keywords still matter If you don’t have a relevant phrase showcased on a website (one that’s not too competitive), you can’t rank – Mike Murray , president, Online Marketing Coach Do everything There’s a pervasive mentality that you have to be on every channel and offer every type of tool Not every company will benefit from a podcast or a Snapchat presence Not every industry will value e-books or SMS Content marketing must fit the needs and behaviors of your specific audience and potential customers – Zontee Hou , co-lead of consulting, Convince and Convert Go wide Publish as much content in as many different channels as possible Now that’s a recipe for disaster – Joe Pulizzi , founder, Content Marketing Institute Build it and they will come Similar to the movie Field of Dreams, I’ve had someone tell a friend if you create good content then customers will come That’s just not true these days You have to be hyper-focused on distributing to the right people at the right time – John Hall , co-founder, Calendarcom Get more eyes “It’s all about the eyeballs” More is not better And just because someone clicked on your blog post doesn’t mean they are interested or qualified. Focus on content for the right prospects, at the right stage of their buying journey (even if that journey has just begun) – Matt Heinz , president, Heinz Marketing Inc Lower your content output Create less content Don’t create less, just be more deliberate. – Christoph Trappe , chief content officer, Stamats Business Media Act like a reporter Content marketers frequently hear the advice that they should think like journalists We should not take this guidance at face value Here’s the heart of the issue for me: Journalism is objective Marketing is not The ultimate goal of marketing is to create change Having an agenda is part of our purview – Katie Martell , communications consultant, Boston Content Hire great writers Just hire someone who can write well Content creators are not interchangeable and “great writing” does not automatically equal great content Instead, match your writers and their skill sets to the channels in which you are publishing – Anna Hrach , strategist, Convince and Convert Realize perception wins Perception is reality At a previous employer, I was having a discussion about developing authentic content for our audience –suburban moms with 23 kids and SUVs I said in order to create authentic content for moms with small kids, it should be written by moms with small kids – not who was currently writing it (college students without kids, old men, etc) The response I got from a C-suite executive was, “Perception is reality. If the reader perceives it as being authentic, then it is authentic” – Scott Spjut , assistant vice president, social and digital content, Fifth Third Bank Make it legendary Create epic content Epic may drive viral, but helpful drives sales And it’s so much easier to be helpful than epic – Tom Martin , president, Converse Digital Get a third party Podcasting for brands should be handled by third parties where they hire professional organizations to put together their content This is the worst advice I have seen Podcasting is a personal medium – and you have a chance to really connect with your clients It’s best to have someone in your company be the voice of your company – Rob Walch , vice president, podcaster relations, Libsyn Hire an intern You can outsource your content marketing to a college kid – Ruth Carter , evil genius, Carter Law Firm Publish regularly Consistency is everything Consistency is super important, but it is only effective when the content is high quality, otherwise, you’re just consistently boring your audience – Michaela Alexis , LinkedIn speaker, trainer, and co-author of Think Video What’s the worst advice you’ve heard? You’ve heard many of the mantras detailed above Which ones irritate you the most? Are any of them actually good advice? Have a different piece of worst advice to share? APPLICATION
Character Sign: Scorpio
Character name: Marwa Tezcan
Birthday: November 16, 1997
Sexuality: bi with male preference
Gender: gender fluid, female biologically
Moon Sign: Taurus
Faceclaim: Freema Agyeman
Power: Lie detecting – Marwa is always cautious of those around her. She always trusts her gut and goes with her instinct and that instinct is exactly what tells her that most people have a hidden agenda. It’s the reason she can come across as secretive and guarded. She’s fiercely loyal to those she trusts but winning her over is a struggle for most. With her new ability she’s able to quickly differentiate between who she can and can’t trust. It makes the logic that much easier and more black and white like the computer brains she’s grown so fond of.  The downfall is her power also lets her see just how often even those she trusts lie, it’s simply human nature. Who can say if this will cause her to isolate herself more and perhaps fuel her already jealous tenancies or if she’ll be able to keep it under control.
Area of Study:  Software Engineering
Biography:
Marwa was born in St. John’s, Newfoundland on a day where the Canadian winds were particularly cold off the ocean coast.  Early childhood memories are always foggy but she’ll never forget the day her mother walked out the door never to come home again. Her parents had always fought but she figured that’s just how adults talked. When she’d brought it up with her father when she was a bit older he always said it was complicated and if her mother didn’t want anything to do with their life any more then it was her loss. But such an event leaves an impression on a young girl of five. Two years passed and a new woman had entered her father’s life. One more and she suddenly had a baby half brother and she was told this was her new family.
She’s always been close with her father. He was her rock through her childhood and would always apologize for the yelling when her mother had still been in the picture. Sure she likes her new family well enough but some part of her has always kept them at arm’s length. After being abandoned once she was in no hurry to give her trust out again.
In school she was no stranger to the principal’s office. There were more than a few phone calls home resulting in her father begin pulled from his day job to come in and apologize on her behalf. He always blamed himself for allowing her to see the fights he would have with her mother and causing her to think escalating problems to such levels was acceptable. Even though she may understand rationally that there were other ways of handling a situation, whenever she believed in something she couldn’t help but stand up and fight for it. Her father tried to channel her energy by enrolling her in soccer. The organized sport gave her a bit of an outlet but she was often accused of taking the game too seriously.
As a kid Marwa got along well with the sportier kids. She wasn’t one for dolls or playing dressup. Her step mother was always telling her how pretty she was and how if she just cleaned up a bit she could be the prettiest girl on the island. Instead she preferred to play with boys and never really cared for her looks. When she reached the age when the girls started to notice the boys and the boys started to notice the girls she didn’t really understand what was happening. Suddenly the boys acted all weird when she’d get in a tussle with them on the field and the girls were suddenly more interested in shopping than kicking around the soccer ball. She started to feel isolated and like she didn’t fit in either group. The worst of it was that sure the boys were cute and she supposed she understood the appeal but the girls were pretty cute too. Yet when she said this out loud people became uncomfortable and looked at her like she had two heads.
When it came time to decide her path for school she took interest in the presentation given by the grad school from overseas. This could be her chance to escape the small rock of a province she called home and see the world. As much as she loved her father, he was happy with his little family and she was ready to become her own person. She didn’t think she had much of a shot but she took the risk and submitted her application for software engineering. Computers had always been her thing. They made sense and were straight forward, never having a hidden agenda. The day the acceptance letter came she was filled with excitement for the unknown that lay before her. She didn’t know what this move would bring but she knew this was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.
Five interesting facts about your character:
-        She’s very protective of her half brother due to the age gap. He’s always been innocent in her eyes and will always be her tiny little brother.
-        She plays violin but it’s not something she advertises
-        She wants to get a tattoo but keeps changing her mind about what to get
-        Music is her escape. Whatever her mood there’s always a perfect song
-        She proud of her newfie accent but when she has a bit too much to drink she can be difficult to understand
Character Quote:
“Always aiming paper airplanes at me when you’re around
You build me up like building blocks just so you can bring me down
You can crush my candy cane but you’ll never catch me cry
If you dangle that diploma and I dead, you, don’t be surprised”
Patronus : Wolf – loyal to its pack to the very end but has the means to fight if needed and opposed by an outsider
WRITING SAMPLE
Marwa took a look around her new dorm room as she flopped onto her bed. With a sigh she reached for her phone from where she’d left it on the pillow. Finally she was all moved into her new home for the next few months. Taking a break she opened Facebook and scrolled down the feed. There was the familiar collection of friends, ironic images, memes and parent’s posting embracing first day of university photos. She paused on one photo in particular. There looking back at her from through the screen was that familiar big toothed grin with the familiar bar backdrop. She new she had been the one to leave and they’d parted on good terms, they hadn’t even known each other for that long but had met through mutual friends at the start of the summer only two months ago. Yet all the same she felt a tightening in her chest as she looked at his arm draped around a smiling red head.
Closing the app she lay back on her bed and looked up at the ceiling. She wasn’t normally one to feel this way looking back, but preferred to look forward. She told herself it was because she was missing home and not that curly haired boy, afterall it was her first time away. Perhaps it was because she wasn’t use to seeing someone move on after being with her before she herself did but the thought crossed her mind of what they could have been if she hadn’t left that rock of a province. Trying to rationalize with herself she told herself she was simply jealous of having not moved on first and it was nothing about that boy in particular. Scolding herself mentally for being so hung up she stood up from her bed. What she needed was a distraction and here was a whole new country ready to give her just that.

I'm just not sleeping anymore
Even the simplest tasks are inciting the micro-anxiety attack somethings (getting nauseous, can't breathe too well, feeling like my heart will explode) Hell I even had one at Lady Gaga and that broke my heart. How could seeing someone I love so much trigger an attack? My boy lives a little far away and I'm terrified of driving on the highway and it will take an hour and 20 mins to get to his apartment without using the highway but I feel guilty af asking him to come here and I'm terrified of going to his lil apartment-warming party bc Id have to not only get there (bc now driving period can be an issue) be thrust into a brand new space with all these people I don't know and I can't stay bc I have work the next morning so I'd probably have to leave early and I know he really REALLY wanted me to stay I'm embarrassed that all these tiny little things make me so so anxious I'm having a really hard time staying on track with grad school applications and I can't finish my sample writing and what I do have isn't long enough or good enough and I'm probably going to fail the GRE and I can't get the job I want without at LEAST a masters and I don't nearly make enough money to survive student loan payments if I don't get accepted to a program for next fall and therefore can't defer my undergrad loans until I finish and can actually get a job and the worst parts are I can't even get evaluated for anxiety meds until Nov. 28th AND I may not be able to take them bc of how they would interact with my ADD meds
