dbs super hero thoughts under the cut, spoilers and being kind of critical in general

disclaimer, i watched it online with not great sound quality, and who knows if the translation was spot on, but it sounded mostly right

it looked REALLY GOOD from what i could see. pans training with piccolo stood out to me for how good it looked. also loved all the redrawn shots from the anime. there WERE some scenes that were… wacky looking, particularly all the scenes on whatever beerus’s planet is called. i do wish it had leaned more into the superhero element? want more impact in the fight scenes. this is part of why pan’s training stood out.

some of the models looked kind of. meh. cheelai looked weird to me? krillin was weirdly skinny for a short ripped martial artist. tbh a lot of the characters just looked weirdly skinny compared to usual. also wish piccolo had his long nails but that’s just personal preference lmao

most of the characters who they shared the models for to get everyone excited for the movie were barely in it at all. like, 18 might have had three lines?? goten and trunks were barely there. krillin was FLANDERIZED. to be fair i don’t watch super so maybe it’s been that bad for a while, idk. but you’re telling me he wouldn’t go help?? HES EITHER THE STRONGEST OR SECOND STRONGEST HUMAN ALIVE (it’s him or tien) and yeah he’s always been one to try to get out of situations but to not even go help when his wife and basically nephews are in a life or death situation AND THE WORLD IS AT STAKE?? WHAT????? videl was barely in it at all, don’t know if she was even aware of her child being kidnapped. where tf is she walking around all the time on facetime, girls gonna get run over. her giving piccolo plushies as thanks for taking care of pan was kind of cute but like. this is so picky but it didn’t feel like a videl thing to me. id believe gohan did that before videl. BUT i LOVE getting some piccolo and videl interaction, they’re two of the most important people in gohans life. id love some real interaction also bc i think their characters could bounce off of each other well but that ship has sailed in canon especially since videl seems to be like. background wife character now. speaking of people who are now just background characters.

GOHAN. wtf did they do to my boy. SOMEONE NEEDS TO COUNT HIS MINUTES OF SCREEN TIME. i saw on peridodite’s blog (not tagging u bc i don’t wanna force someone to read all this lol) that it was supposedly a piccolo movie but they pushed for gohan to be in it, which makes a lot of sense. i’m sorry, but i want one or the other. i love gohan but i’d be fine with just a piccolo movie (gohan would make an appearance regardless, you know he would)! it would make way more sense! bc by forcing gohan to have to be relevant but not wanting to adjust the plot events too much, they make the whole thing into like… piccolos scheme to get gohan to fight? I WILL SAY they actually made piccolo seem pretty chill with gohan not training in this one, at least in the translation i had. he wanted to make him fight bc he’s like. their best bet. BUT. i think that was a bad move period. it’s not a good look to make the characters not try to fight their own battles or just ask for help directly. where did piccolos strong will and backbone go? he’s not against asking for help when he knows he’s down and he definitely isn’t against lying but like. him being like well i can’t do much and goku and vegeta aren’t here teehee didn’t make me too happy, but i don’t like the huge power divide now anyway.

but anyway, gohan is barely in it, but i liked a lot of his moments! him nearly destroying his house was GOOD. him not sensing piccolos ki… i thought they’d reveal it was a joke but they didn’t?? that just doesn’t make sense. he’s been able to easy sense his loved ones since saiyan saga.

i liked piccolo talking to shenron bc in what i watched it seemed like it was making a joke about how king piccolo murdered shenron and so shenron was scared, but i wasn’t sure if it was actually going for reverence towards kami or something, idk. but the fact that they can just… power up the dragon to grant them more power…. didn’t like it. and didn’t like that they wouldn’t just resort to training, they were like give me a power up! piccolos always been big on training. idk, it made the fight feel cheap.

the new forms SUCK. like oh god piccolo looked SOOOO cute and then his new forms are SO UGLY and just not good. very uncreative. would’ve loved something related to the dragon if we HAD to have new forms. gohans stupid hair dear lord. but i’d much prefer that no one had a new form, bc it was kind of forced into the plot with low stakes which made them feel less significant (super saiyan was a HUGE DEAL to achieve at first, for example). i still maintain that piccolo should’ve learned kaioken bc he could use it REALLY well given his regenerative abilities. gohan shouldn’t need a new form! he’s gohan!

also you’re really telling me these gammas are that powerful 💀

bringing back cell…. bad…. wasn’t a good design and bringing him back had zero impact given no one really responded accordingly. and that fight was really boring? the hits didn’t have impact, the obvious choice was to have piccolo or someone use makankosappo on the head thing bc IT’S MEANT TO PENETRATE. also when they were like someone has to sacrifice themselves kind of surprised piccolo wasn’t just like ok cool i’ll do it bc he’s never shied away from self sacrifice lol. but again, there wasn’t any weight to it.

you can have weight in dragon ball movies, broly proved it! you can know everyone will ultimately be ok but still make care bc you wonder how the arc will resolve for the characters and how they’ll be affected! but like. nothing really happened. gohans change just felt weird? idk.

the villains got a LOT of time but there were a lot of them and they didn’t do a great job with their time making you invested. i didn’t care about any of them. i’m sorry but when gamma 2 (?) died i felt nothing. and it’s not like i went into this movie planning to hate them! i was SOOOO hype for this movie, but i was like oh. ok. i don’t even dislike any of them i’m just perfectly neutral. i don’t remember the gero grandsons name but he had a little more appeal bc he’s clearly like a brat but also just wants to do good ultimately? and he’s smart but stupid in that he has no common sense and got fooled really easily, which was endearing to me in this case. but also i don’t even remember his name.

oh yeah my thing didn’t have a post credits scene so i’m wondering what that is lol

it was cool to hear piccolo refer to goku as goku, i immediately noticed since he’s usually like SON. his japanese va is awesome as always. and there were definitely cute antics! i liked him clawing at gohans window, trying to drive the plane… pan was cute.

GOKU AND VEGETA. HNGHHHHHH I WAS MAD. you’re telling me GOKU needs to learn patience in fighting, but vegeta is better than him at it?? SUPER GOKU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU I HATE YOU

At least the final scene with those two it seemed like they made it ambiguous whether or not goku pretended to lose to vegeta

there are definitely other things im forgetting right now bc it has been a minute but. overall it wasn’t great, i was honestly kind of disappointed bc i was looking forward to it for a long time, piccolos my favorite. BUT. it wasn’t terrible! i know i was very critical here but i didn’t hate it. probably a better experience in a theatre setting, the fights might have been better with better sound. would’ve liked more of superhero elements (where r u saiyaman…. we need u……..). definitely wayyyyy inferior to the broly movie. kind of at the same level as like. tree of might.

ok ray ily but i'ma have to fight you on the goku thing bc i take great personal issue w/ toriyama never allowing goku to be more than the distilled essence of "idiot shonen protag" (and goku loves gohan a lot when he's allowed to be there for him!) while relying on goku to solve nearly every conflict but also needing goku gone bc toriyama's rly bad at writing lmao; not to mention i'm forever salty we never got good saiyan lore to set apart the, y'know, aliens w/ their culture/behaviors tbh

(goku anon) plus there's little to no follow up to the miraculous dragon ball head wound that turned goku from murder carrot to doofy idiot. tbh while i love gohan/goten i think toriyama did goku a shit favor by bringing in kids if he's just gonna have goku make all the sacrifice plays or always face down the big bad (also the boy didn't know wtf marriage was and that's uh, kinda uncomfortable tbh) and any decent delves into goku's thought processes just aren't there in favor of "lol he dumb" so

(goku anon again, sorry) anyway i just. i love db/dbz but it's such a shallow shonen that does very few of its characters any justice, its main most of all, and i can't believe we later got shonen that, while still a bit shallow bc shonen lol, explored characterization and world building severely lacking in the big progenitor/introductory shonen. toriyama just isn't the writer who could make db/z stronger since he can't even keep his own story stuff or characters straight and that pains me lol

~~~Oh no I agree with you for the most part. I might dunk on him from time to time but Goku’s issues can be traced back to him not being allowed to grow out of a very specific cliched characterization even if his past and the storyline should have called for it.

I’ve always been of the opinion that Goku should’ve never married and had children before DBZ cause yeah it just didn’t fit his personality at all.  (Plus I never liked the characterization ChiChi got stuck with post DB either)  It really did feel like Goku was a perpetual child in so many ways and so yeah I agree that him getting married was ick and it causes a lot of things he did and said to reflect kind of bad on him in a lot of ways with some deeper thought.

I wish we got more back ground on Saiyans too cause maaaannnn that could have been so rich and deep. Like that’s one of the reasons Vegeta has always been a fave of mine cause what back story they gave him made him so interesting and there’s so much you could extrapolate about his background and past experiences from it.

DBZ is like the starter shounen for everyone though and it very much sacrifices characterization/lore/story/etc for Oh Flashy Fight Scene

Goku is entertaining in the original dragon ball series not in DBZ, both Bulma and Krillin are better characters in the original series too. Vegeta is only entertaining during the Freiza saga, he’s kinda boring after that.

How is Gon flat? Normally he has a typical cheerful and goofy shonen protag demeanour, but he’s also selfish, and when he screwed up, he looked for someone to blame and acted like he’s the only victim. “It’s easy for you Killua, you don’t feel anything”. He’s basically a little bitch when real shits happened and he couldn’t handle it.

You know what, if you want 15 year old react realistically to situations, the protag would shit their pants and run away when they face a world ending threat. And if they do get PTSD, and if you want it to be handled realistically, they would be put on medication and they would not be allowed to go out there to fight again, and there it’s the end of their role in a battle manga.

can’t have mental issues and and participate in “action, adventure and heroism”, is there now? We have so many bland shounen main characters one would think people would have gotten sick of them now. Confidence? Show me confidence but also show me how it bites them in the ass. Show me how that character feels about his confidence being responsible for his best friends death. Use that shit to give me a story. Luffy regularly brings his friends into shitty situations and never even thinks (2)

We also have so many emotional and whiny shonen characters, one would think people would have gotten sick of them now. Isn’t the popularity of OPM evidence that people are tired of angst ridden characters and want the opposite of those type of characterization? Confidence isn’t a bad trait, why should they be punished for it? If you’re talking about overcondifence and underestimating the opponents, we have loads of characters like that, they’re just more often antagonists and deuteragonists. It’s literally vegeta’s character in every saga lol, being cocky, then having his ass handed to him. This stuff is also absurdly common in sport anime.

seriously about the fact that one of them might die even after Ace. Why can’t he still go into dangerous situations while thinking about it? Or at least after having seriously thought about it? Character flaws are not the problem. Light have dozens of those but he’s not annoying. Naruto always brabbles about himself because he’s a self-centered asshole but couldn’t other people just shut him up? If people had reacted appropriately to his whining, seeing him try again and again just to get shot down would have been hilarious instead of infuriating. I don’t think Luffy can think seriously even if he tries, thinking is usopp and Law’s speciality, they can’t all be the same. Zoro and Law both told Luffy off at some point, Usopp got into fight with Luffy multiple times because they disagree.

To me, Naruto’s whining is like people whining on facebook and tumblr about their personal “issues”, it’s banal. He whines about the stuff that everyone whines about.

Luffy and so on. I want… different characters. I don’t even care if they start boring like every other Shounen Hero if they have enough character development. If they react appropriately to the situation. I’m sick of characters where everything just… washed off. Like they’re resistant against water or something. What’s wrong with PTSD? The amount of times I’ve seen even inklings of it (and never acknowledged in canon are ridiculously small, considering the shit shounen heroes go through (5) 

Like I said, realistic PTSD and depression mean the characters would be missing from action for an extended period of time, and that’s not an option for long running shonen series. Unless you want to see that character continue to take part in fights, ignore their condition and get killed as a result. This can only be done to expensable characters.  Maybe you should read seinen, and non battle manga if you want that kinda characterization. People do not read shonen battle manga to see a character spending a whole arc recovering from depression. There’re other genres better suited for that. Characters with mental illness can be one dimensional too, a mental illness doesn’t necessarily improve a character. 

When you said “washed off”, what do you exactly mean? Luffy did react to Ace’s death realistically, he grieved rather extravagantly tbh. But life goes on, it’s the same as in real life, effects of events do wash off and fade. There’re characters who quit after one particular bad game or an injury, characters who walk away from fights after losing a nakama, they’re just not main characters because main characters don’t quit. There’s limits to how much you let your main characters sulk. There’s a lot of bitching from the fans when the MC in yowapeda cannot perform after one of his senpai left, I thought it’s too much forced drama too, he just left the country, he didn’t die. This is not like Tiger Woods losing his father.

anyway tbh, goku’s behavior in the last episode is anything new. like for me, i didn’t really like how he spoke to the gods and stuff, but then again, goku treats everyone equally. it doesn’t matter if you’re a god or you’re a crook, he’ll be friendly as long as you’re not a threat. (which is fine, but people have the tendency to think he’s clueless because he’s not uptight or doesn’t care for social graces. it was really good that they pointed out that he considers his gi as his “formal wear” though because it shows he just has a different set of rules from himself.) 

[i’m gonna cut here bc this is extremely meaty and completely opinion based, plus i don’t want to flood people’s dashboards]

nonetheless, from what i’ve gathered, he’s been falling behind in his training again, which is why he brought up the tournament to the zenos in the first place. this is a selfish act by default because it’s what he wants. that’s not a bad thing at all though. he hasn’t made some kind of deal that the loser gets their universe destroyed or anything. there’s risk, yes, but keeping the zenos from recklessly and unintentionally destroying things seems really simple as just keeping them entertained for the duration of the tournament. 

from one point, this seems like he’s purposely putting the world in danger to put his needs first but i wouldn’t go that deep tbh. it just looks like a good time to beef up his buddies so he has new partners to train with in the future and getting a chance to fight others from different universes. it just sees like a way to get everyone to catch up to him and vegeta w/o needing to go through individual character arcs, you know? 

plus with the return of his aspect of goku, we can go back to realizing that goku’s smarter than what he is. it’s never been that he’s undoubtedly an idiot, but because his rivalry with vegeta has been the main focus for a lot of the material lately, there’s lots of miscommunication that’s meant to be funny (this ironically gets lost in western translations), but it’s become this gag that vegeta is some brooding genius and goku’s a moronic hick. vegeta’s so serious and goku is ignorant, etc. like you get the point. 

personally, i still think if they hadn’t shown vegeta’s concern for bulma’s pregnancy in the episode, what goku had done would’ve been more widely accepted and seen less as idiotic. (because i mean, it brings up that if vegeta’s “growing up” then why hasn’t goku/etc, things like that) but this has been goku’s character since forever. the key difference between now and then is that he’s older and for someone who’s topped as many levels as him, he knows there’s still more to go, but that’s not his only priority anymore. 

with vegeta and bulma getting pregnant, gohan and krillin fighting on their own terms to protect the ones they love, the common theme that’s running is that there’s more to life and more reasons to fight. we still don’t know what’s going to be the conflict for his character in this upcoming saga, but we can only hope it’s as meaningful as everyone else’s. i think with that past episode, we haven’t even touched the plot just yet so there’s nothing good enough to make theories just yet tbh!!

so if you feel confused and unsure, that’s fine. i think that’s the ultimate goal was to give goku back some of his personality without it involving other characters. we haven’t seen that in the longest so it’s strange.

RPING AS GOHAN POST

So like I promised I’d say this as well and basically to get to the bottom of that we have to go back to my Fallout 3 muse. John Hudson, a Lone Wanderer blog I made cause damn I love Fallout.

Somewhere down the line I decided I’d try something, and basically ended up doing a crossover with a bunch of dbz blogs, some of you are still around C:

It was fun honestly playing as this normal human who yes is very strong and powerful, in his own world. But bring him into the DBZ side of things and even people like Yamcha can probably beat him up tbh. Unless he gets the drop and a laser rifle can actually kill someone in this universe. I guess it depends on if the laser rifle is as strong as like that beam gun that Frieza mook used. He had a name but I can’t remember.

More importantly though he’s also in a world that never suffered like his, his world has basically nothing green left and tbh? You could consider it a dead world. Meanwhile the Earth in DBZ is very alive, very very alive. It even has fucking dinosaurs so there’s that. Mass Effect was another neat crossover for the possibilities cause Earth is doomed in there too. But MOVING ON

I can’t remember when but somewhere down the line I totally read Dragonball Multiverse and also wanted to do a DBZ blog. My first idea was an oc from the DBM. I wanted to make an Earthling from that one Universe 9, cause I really loved the idea behind it. It was the one with the really strong Earthlings and like Videl had a Z-Sword and all that. I had nice little thing going that he was the youngest and so definitely not the strongest there, but had been training and all that. Basically he saw the Z-Warriors or whatever the hell they call themselves as like... idols? They were so strong and saved the world so many times he wanted to be just like them. He also had a crush on Videl cause damn she tough. ANYWAY somewhere down the line I decided, maybe I could do 3 blogs I don’t know. So yeah, Gohan happened. Well next I had to decide on a main verse and there was at that time a LOT of pre-teen Gohans and so I wanted to do something more rare cause it could be fun! So I chose Gohan from Super. Most of my first icons are all from like RoF since he pops up in it so much and DAMN is it nice looking. It was just a test and very quickly I found out I REALLY REALLY love rping as Gohan and the oc got abandoned. Sometime later I also added the high school verse cause I needed icons for that Danganronpa crossover. 

I just remembered yeah I had two choices I was thinking of either doing an OC or Gohan and I wasn’t sure which cause I was VERY nervous about doing a good job with Gohan, like I’m not even kidding on how nervous I was since he is a canon character and I can’t help it I want to make sure I do justice. The Gohan thing I’m 90% certain started out as a test and uh let’s just say it turned into what you see now. But back onto this history lesson.

Somewhere down the line a certain Videl popped up, and heey our first thread and it ended up being in the high school/buu verse and is a training thread that’s still going now. Well now I started getting questions aimed at that verse and so I gathered more and more icons for it. I also of course got the asks for Super related stuff and so I kinda had a split between stuff for Super and stuff for Buu saga.

Oh and then comes the Great Saiyaman threads and I gathered tons of stuff for it, this is where that one moment with a Jaco pops up where they get into a posing competition and aaah such a good memory! Around this time was lots of dash silliness tbh.

But yeah I did a lot of Buu saga stuff with Gohan, especially pre-Buu. 

OH and somewhere down this line I also did a thing with kid Gohan and when I say kid Gohan were talking like before he even fights Nappa and all that cause he was such a little cutie. I haven’t done it in forever, that verse, but it was fun.

Once again you can blame ferocitus, heartyrice aind winny for this. Those nerds are part of who definitely convinced me to go through with this B)

can we start with the tournament/meeting again/the proposal? because that’s my favorite moment for them, like meeting as kids was cute but they both grew so much!! when it came to the tournament both mentally and physically. goku really grew to understand people/feelings better after his training on the lookout, whereas chichi learned how to stand up for herself and completely dropped her helplessness. like individually, it was a really good time for the both of them tbh!! 

(read more bc this is very long and i am a bit embarrassed how enthusiastic I am about them and all this genuine love is not helping my coolness lmao)

but alright!! let’s skip ahead to the actual proposal because I think it’s just so them. tbh I never really seen neither goku and chichi as big romantics, even young chichi was more idealizing the idea of a boyfriend than understanding what exactly that meant. like, they both were ignorant when it came to that department so I’m kind of glad that the proposal wasn’t this huge emotional thing? it was quick and sweet, but very genuine to them. 

like i could go on about how goku used to never stick with people or how chichi’s heart used to be fickle because she didn’t understand the implications of a boyfriend, and how beautiful it is that they were kind of just blindly loyal to each other but?? i think that wouldn’t emphasize how perfect it was for them to find each other??? like there’s no denying that both goku and chichi are extremely devoted people. like once they accept you in their life, you are a part of their life forever (looking @ you, piccolo) and that’s just about it. 

i know that doesn’t seem like a big deal (like it’s an obvious trait), but throughout DB, with very few exceptions to some side characters, we’re shown that good people with good actions can still have ill intentions. but goku and chichi? nah, they just really want to be together and that’s it?? it literally baffles me why people ask the reasons why chichi would want to be with a “battle hungry” man like goku and why goku would want to be with a “loud nagging” woman like chichi because it dismisses such an obvious thing: they like each other and they always have. 

and i don’t know. maybe because since i’m getting older, i finally understand why people say passion in a relationship doesn’t last long?? but their relationship just resonates with me because goku and chichi aren’t about having these heated fights or whatever. they’re really reserved when it comes to showing affection in public to the point where they shy away from it, but man, it’s just the little things that they do that make me understand why they work and have been working so well

if chichi asks for help/to run an errand, then goku does it 

if goku wants something, then he discusses it with chichi first 

chichi always makes sure goku eats something 

goku always makes sure chichi is taken care of before he goes off

if chichi doesn’t like something, she expresses that

if goku doesn’t like something,  he expresses that

if they have conflicting interests, they DISCUSS that??

it’s like woW??? HEALTHY COMMUNICATION??? and thoughtfulness to your partner??? keePS a marriage ALIVE even after death(s)???

like everyone brings up the cell games of how he told chichi he wasn’t going to let gohan fight but ended up relying on him is questionable (i’ll give you that) but?? god???? i hate saying that the ends justify the means but in this situation, it does because gohan was the only one strong enough to take on cell (remember that the adults were having immense trouble with just the cell jr’s). again, it could’ve been handled better but in their small time frame, goku took responsibility for an incredibly hard decision and tbh I respect him for that because he did the job that everyone bestowed on him to the best of his ability. like wow, that’s parenting!!! (even tho it is extreme, i give you that) 

but whatever, it was really nice to see him and chichi have opposing views to gohan’s future before letting him decide what he wanted to do because it really shows how they work as a real unit. gohan was a gifted kid in both aspects of education and martial arts, and it was really amazing to see two parents who wanted to nurture those parts of him. like they genuinely talk about it to see what they want to do without overpowering each other and sometimes one wins and sometimes the other does. (but you know, chichi and goku don’t see their “arguments” as wins/losses?? they just want to raise their kids the best way they can and that’s freaking beautiful???) (like yeah they’re just doing their jobs but not all parents are like that?? so let’s just praise them ok)

this is kind of getting long but one more thing i want to bring up is the fact how chichi isn’t allowed at the big fights but it isn’t because she’s weak (like no offense but if chichi can train goten to be almost on par with trunks who trains with a hard ass like VEGETA, she is in no way weak ok). but because we know that regardless of the situation, if chichi sees goku hurt, she’ll JUMP and RUN to be by his side to protect him??? like literally goku has to make sure she’s in a different part of the world so she doesn’t beat up his foes before he does???? like really, just imagine that

and if NOT that, then wow?? it’s like?? he cares a lot about her life to not put it anywhere near immediate danger???? (((let’s not forget that a big part of goku’s inability to control his strength throughout z is how his anger takes over his inability to think (which btw was such a bittersweet thing to add to gohan’s flaws like wow); if you need example, then see how hard he’s trying to compose himself honorably with frieza or how hard he can’t keep it together when raditz comes to take his son))) so goku probably needs chichi to be somewhere safe so he doesn’t lose it during battle because she affects him that much??????? wOW??? ITS LIKE HE LOVES HER????
