NATALIE WOOD in WEST SIDE STORY (1961) I never like anybody disparaging anything Natalie did because | think she’s so wonderful in the role and the fact that it ended up not being her [singing] voice, to me made absolutely no difference. - GEORGE CHAKIRIS

Wood Engraving Wednesday
PAUL LANDACRE
Here are a few wood engravings by the well-respected California engraver Paul Landacre (1893-1963) from a biography of the artist, Paul Landacre: A Life and Legacy, by California writer and educator Anthony L. Lehman (1935-1988), published in Los Angeles as "Los Angeles Miscellany Number 15" in a limited edition of 500 copies by Dawson's Book Shop in 1983.
Landacre loved to depict the California landscapes as well as the people, animals, and plants that inhabit them. His life was filled with triumph and tragedy. His Wikipedia entry notes:
Landacre achieved a singular, mature style lauded for its formal beauty—meticulously carved fine lines, delicate cross hatching, and flecking—elements in white which strikingly contrast with velvety blacks. His prints, including the early linocuts, gained early and lasting critical recognition, were awarded numerous prizes, and are found in more than a hundred and fifty public collections throughout the United States.
His biographer Lehman writes:
The manner in which he surmounted a crippling illness that would have left a lesser man embittered, the close and durable bond that characterized his marriage and, of course, the consummate achievement of his art, fill me with admiration and respect. I regret that I never knew Paul Landacre, but his exquisite and radiant wood-engravings survive as an immutable legacy for which we should all be beholden.
Our copy of this biography is another donation from the estate of our late friend Dennis Bayuzick.
