I just realized I can just grab the next jumping spider I see and put it in a terrarium and just. Have a pet spider. The only thing stopping me rn is that its the middle of winter and a lack of information, but that gives me plenty of time to study! Its just gonna kill me waiting to actually Do Anything abt it (except clean my room so there's less chance of them getting lost agsjsgj)
Anyways seasonal depression hits different when you finally realize you wanna be an entomologist but I was able to find a good sized jar and some mesh table liner stuff to use for the top, so it'll be nice and easy to mist it down and provide plenty of air for the little baby!
I have free will and I will use it to Aquire Bugs >:]
#my mom said she fully supports me and my dad is chill about bugs as long as they arent on him#and my sister no longer lives here and doesnt need to know#this is whats gonna motivate me to get my shit together#and I live by the great lakes so theres live bait in pretty much every gas station#i just need a steady job so I can pay for them#maybe i could apply at the gas station? easy access to bug food and theres 2 in town#plus theres a subway in one and dippin dots in the other#and i have a friend from high school that works in one so maybe he can help me :)#and if I get my room clean I can move things around! so i can work on the layout too for now#its the first time in forever ive felt like my life has some direction#and I'm gonna take an online course in wildlife conservation to start :D#and I found an online course in entomology I can take too :]#the wildlife conservation one is for a bachelor's degree so that should be a good start!#im gonna ask my therapist to help me make a five year plan and help me stick to it#with things I can get done in five weeks‚ five months‚ and five years :]#first I gotta get my sleep meds bc im so tired#theres so much i wanna do with my life and im gonna make them happen#and ill be the first in my family to go to college! once I get my bachelors and a stable job i wanna go back for a doctorate#i wanna be a bug doctor#sosososo bad#entomology#it only took me 24 and a half years to figure out what to do with my life lmao#ive been happy stimming so much its insane#i wanna get a camper van too so i can travel around looking for bugs :3

Do you have any advice on becoming a park ranger or wildlife biologist? I’m going to college with the intent of getting a biology/zoology double major or major minor but I’m not too sure where to go from here. Feel free to not answer btw! I won’t be mad or anything since it ain’t your job to give people career advice lol
Sure! Well I can speak to being a Ranger at least, I’m not a wildlife biologist and despite my zoo work I’m a geologist first and foremost.
First piece of advice is a question:
What kind of Ranger? We come in many flavors, but broadly you have Interpretive Rangers (visitor contacts, giving talks, roving front country, this is what I do), Law Enforcement (forest cops), Resource Management (this means a lot of different things, but relevant to you they’re the ones working with animals in the park, hazing problem animals, doing research on populations, euthanizing animals that are involved in road accidents), Back Country (trail repair, making sure folks using back country areas are following rules, various other jobs, back country wears a lot of hats and they also ride horses), VUA/Fees (rangers at the gates, rangers in the camp grounds making sure no one is feeding bears).
Prepare to Work Seasonally: Even with a graduate degree most entry level parks jobs are seasonal. For NPS and Forest Service you need to work 24 months as a seasonal before you’ll be eligible for permanent jobs, which means 4-6 years of seasonal work depending on your park.
Start your seasons early! When applying to federal public lands jobs you’ll see paygrades listed as codes. I’m in a GS5, which basically just means I have a bachelors degree. GS4 positions only require 2 years of college, GS3 requires a high school degree. If you can find a park with a short season, I strongly recommend working any General Schedule job you can with a public lands agency. It does not matter, they all count toward your 24 months.
Volunteer. Volunteer hours don’t count toward your 24 months, but they are counted as experience when applying to federal public lands jobs. If you can’t get a paying gig, and you can afford to do it, Americorps and Geoscientist in the Parks (don’t let the name fool you, they do biology focused positions as well) are great options. Both will often house you, and pay a small stipend, which can cover some living expenses. If you’ll be under 19 by the end of next summer, the Youth Conservation Corps is also a great option. Too late for this season, most apps get put up in January, and close in April. Most of these programs have students and recent grads in mind, and generally fit inside a summer.
Write the shit out of your resume: Most resumes are supposed to be 1-2 pages in length. Your federal resume should have everything you’ve ever done on it. If you can say anything relevant to the job you’re applying for, put the past job on. I have work history going back to 2010 on my federal resume. Add volunteer positions, add societies you’re part of. Put. It. On. The. Resume. ALSO build your resume in the USA Jobs resume builder, otherwise you’re likely to leave off the weird stuff Uncle Sam likes but that you would never put on a private sector resume.
Find references who will fight for you: Federal jobs will check your references, so get good ones. They don’t necessarily have to be former supervisors; professors from your college, or folks you volunteer with can be great options, especially if you have a less than extensive work history. There’s a lot hiring officers in Federal jobs can’t do, but they will listen to your references.
Just get your foot in the door: This might seem counterproductive, but it’s better to get A public lands job than THE PERFECT public lands job. For federal work, passing muster once helps every subsequent application, in part because it’s easier to hire someone who has already jumped through all the hoops once already. If you want to go into a Resource position, but all you qualify for is a Visitor Use Assistant job, take the VUA. It’ll get you moving, and chip away at your 24 months.
Lastly, Be Flexible: This is a hard world to get into. Positions are highly sought after and it can take time to really get on the path that’s right for you. We’re all in the same boat, bobbing in the same sea. Your fellow public lands folks are a great resource at every step. Some might be frustrating, but most are really decent people who will try to help their comrades whenever they can.
Being a Park Ranger is the weirdest, wildest job in the world, and I hope you get to experience that firsthand.
If you (or anyone) has other questions, I usually remember to answer asks folks send me!

Hard to Analyze Love When You’re in it.
“I’m in the land of pine and air
Of mountain, squirrel and grizzly bear,
In the land of bitterroot and sagebrush, too.
Where trout filled streams are not a few.”
I’m in Montana and it is LOVE. And I give a nod to John Steinbeck when he said it’s hard to analyze love when you’re in it.
My YSEALI experience can’t be written in 140 characters. IG stories can’t speak enough about this 5-week academic institute. It’s more than just an Fb photo, more than just a blog. While all these can’t capture the littlest details of my journey, my heart can never lie on how much love this program can ever bring. Indeed, there’s no better way towards self-discovery than YSEALI.
And since it’s overwhelming, let me squeeze these countless experiences in 10!
The American University
Tumblr media
I never thought that university settings in American movies would come to life! We just felt so privileged to be hosted by the University of Montana (UM) which is on the top 2.4% of Universities Worldwide (Center for World University Rankings). Over a couple of nights, our consciousness grapples with book chapters and case studies to prepare us for an exposure inside a “legit” American classroom, joining both bachelor’s degree and graduate school classes.  Every morning was colder than expected but we have to get our bikes unlocked and cross a bridge to reach school. Two well regarded UM courses –“Conservation Without Borders” with Dr. Len Broberg, and “Introduction to Climate Change” by Dr. Nicky Phear- were participated in by the fellows. We experienced watching a Shakespeare in the park play while sitting on our picnic mats, studied inside Montana’s largest 5-level library, enjoyed free food and souvenirs during the welcome feast, felt amazed by their Star Gazing Room, and joined an exclusive supplementary discussions at Davidsons Honors College. Students are very welcoming and bubbly but turns focused when it comes to studying- something that everyone should ponder in striking a balance.
Good Food, Good Mood
Tumblr media
Bacons, eggs and patties wake us up with vigor! While most Asians are rice-eaters we took the time to enjoy a wide variety of salad and a daily vegetarian selection. The Food Zoo which is the university’s primary café serves rotating choice s of entrees, fresh fruits, desserts, and traditional fast food favorites. We were also introduced to cuisines from China, India, Vietnam, and Thai while savoring the flavor of fruits from Downtown Farmers Market up to the Cajun fries and Po Boys of Louisiana.
Service Projects
Tumblr media
Roll sleeves and we’re ready to serve! Americans are sympathetic and openhanded.  They don’t only share; they assure the quality of what they share, since community involvements and civic responsibilities are known to be key aspects of American society. We harvested produce in the PEAS Farm which is also used for personal rehabilitation of troubled youth and adults through service education; repacked pretzels in Missoula Food Bank for distribution to school children; contributed to the maintenance of young poplar trees in Misssoula Hybrid Poplar Water Reclamation Project; and finally volunteered in D.C. Central Kitchen which uses food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds and build communities.
Educational Study Tour
Tumblr media
Authentic learning is also found beyond classrooms. While based in Missoula, we enjoyed a variety of field trips throughout Montana. Lips can’t lie when it says “The snow glows white on the mountain tonight”, because the Glacier National Park handed to us our first trail, first slide, and first snow fight. I must say, the cold never bothered us anyway. Meanwhile, evening lecture on Apex Predators and Wildlife Conservation in th e Crown of the Continent as well as the Nat Geo’s Geotourism Project gave us a glimpse of their preservation initiatives. We also visited the state capitol in Helena, Anaconda Company mining of Butte and Miltown, and the Flathead Indian Reservation of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Jam-packed as it may seem, all these tight schedules and long travels were unfelt when you just have karaoke buddies singing out loud over a carpool!
School Visits
Tumblr media
I admit I missed home. But whenever I visitt other schools, I miss my own workplace, colleagues and my students even more. There’s a legit High School Musical feels as we paced along the hallways of the Arlee High School where we also played a Native American sport called “Lacrosse”. Also, the visit in Montana Tech University provided us with discussions on mining technology. What’s most interesting though is that young American students in Lewis and Clark Elementary School seemed to be native Filipino speakers after learning our language and culture. In fact, it wasn’t hard to handle them because they have such inquisitive minds and are ever curious about the world.
Outdoor Exploration
Tumblr media
Our adventure spree kicked off by riding a chairlift to see the scenic view of Snowbowl Mountain Resort miles above the ground. This serves as ski resort during the winter and popular location for outdoor pursuits such as mountain biking and hiking in the summer. Most of the days may be freezing cold, so we look for ways to sweat a lot! We went on foot for a hike to the “M” on Missoula’s iconic Mt. Sentinel; conquered our fear of heights with the ropes course and climbing wall; and sailed the Clark Fork River in a whitewater rafting. There are a lot to explore from First Friday gallery night in Downtown Missoula to a Saturday Market with local artists and producers. “Go Griz” is our battle cry! We can’t help but scream in awe to show our support for UM’s Grizzly football game in America’s most popular sport. Indeed, our “Touchdown, Montana!” yell was more than literal!
One ASEAN
Tumblr media
YSEALI is United States’ signature program to strengthen leadership development and networking in Southeast Asia. And as chosen representatives of our countries, we discussed environmental concerns we face at home which made us reflect on our social responsibility and illuminated the many issues that transcend national borders. All of us were exposed to an array of seminar-workshops on climate change, forestry, water resource management, environmental impact assessment, ecological restoration, food security and transboundary issues where our speakers are the book authors themselves.  I must say, thi s US program went beyond just learning from every other ASEAN young leader—it forged linkages and created bonds which time can never erase. In fact, we don’t worry much anymore in travelling the world because we know at least one passionate leader and best friend who thrive in each of the ASEAN countries!
Homestay Experience
Tumblr media
We definitely found a family away from home! We spent quality time with our host families over a weekend to experience first-hand how Americans live in a daily basis. Eating home-cooked dishes, hiking and biking for a hilltop picnic, exploring local restaurants and markets, discussing politics and similarities among countries, playing gamelan, and most especially taking the longest sleep in the whole program duration, were only few of the many experiences that made us feel at home amidst distance.
To the “Big Easy”, New Orleans
Tumblr media
Big Hello to the Big Easy! This nationwide educational tour took us to New Orleans and Lafayette, Louisiana in order to study watershed management, natural disaster mitigation, and coastal climate change after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 which was an extremely destructive and deadly tropical cyclone that hit the gulf coa st of US. Meanwhile, we grabbed the chance to venture French Quarter which reflects the neighborhood’s deep history seen in its beautiful 18th-century architecture, strolled the streets of Central Business District, and discovered Tremé which serves as a hub of African American and Créole culture in New Orleans. Also, the swamp day tour by boat through the Atchafalaya Basin took as into adventure through moss-draped trees and lingering alligators, while the Cajun culture got as dancing in a full night of music that keeps “joie de vivre” alive and flourishing.
US Capital City- Washington D.C.
Tumblr media
We spent the final stop of our program in D.C. to learn about the formulation and enforcement of environmental legislation. The formal feels and busy vibe around the city brought our feet to the iconic memorials of the late presidents Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln, while reading all remarkable quotes of Martin Luther King, Jr. Moreover, our visit in the Ocean Conservancy and the Greenpeace wrapped up our exposure with the most successful environmental organizations worldwide; and of course, the experience won’t be complete without a glimpse of The White House and the US Capitol.
All these myriad escapades taught me how to love a country that’s not my own. And this same love translates into a mission to serve my home. As a young millennial leader, 140 characters, IG stories, Fb posts and blogs can never fully express how grateful I am to have witnessed the brilliance of the outside world, the brilliance of drawing lines from the dots that connect us, and the brilliance of life that made these days happen.  I have had lots of stories to share. And these stories shall give life to little dreams built by love.

Saving Biodiversity One Educated Mind at a Time
Tumblr media
Faith In the Outdoors
Did you ever have a moment when you thought to yourself, “I could spend the rest of my life here?” I had that moment when I was on a family trip to Bushkill Falls. Being in the great outdoors, hiking, and observing is what I felt like I was called to do. However, this was a broad idea, so I had to learn more of my interests. By answering Scott Christ’s “7 Powerful Questions To Find Out What You Want To Do With Your Life” I learned my life goals and got to observe how those connect to my career.
My discussion of wanting to be a conservation scientist will include my interest in the field, some basic knowledge about it, experience from someone doing this work, and current events taking place. First, this career fits with my overarching theme of wanting a hands on job. I want to be able to work outside and plant or construct things. I love rolling up my sleeves and getting to work. One of my greatest accomplishments was when I volunteered in South Africa. We were constructing a house for a family and by the end of the day we had all five rooms with a floor. The floor was constructed of concrete that we had to mix by hand and it was pain staking labor. However, we hit a record for how much we mixed and it felt satisfying to have it all done.
Because I enjoy constructing and getting my hands dirty, it is also a dream of mine to landscape my backyard when I buy a house. I invision having a slew of native plants strewn across that yard in an organic fashion. From what I understand about nature and biodiversity, these natives should also bring animal species to the yard. It will become a sanctuary for Pennsylvania wildlife. Biodiversity is something I’m very passionate about and I would love the job of conserving that.
Another thing I’m passionate about is my family, so it is important for me to have minimal take-home work. As a current student I loath homework. I wouldn’t mind being at school longer, but when I’m home I want to be able to spend time with those I love. I would think that as a conservation scientist, I would be able to meet these requirements. However, I need more research to know for sure, so I consulted the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
A Logical View
According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook’s entry on “Conservation Scientists and Foresters,”  conservation scientists manage land with the government or independent parties, face hazards, have better job prospects in the western United States, have a slowly growing field, and receive decent pay. These scientists often work full time, normal hours in labs, offices, or outside. They manage the land to make sure environmental regulations are being met, and they must have good analytical and communication skills. Analytical skills are used in the experimentation portion of these jobs. The work requires accuracy and precision to ensure consistent and trusted results. Communication is also important for overseeing the management of an area. A conservationist must give clear directions to those working under them, and give understandable information to the public.
Due to the nature of their job, they face risks like poisonous plants, ticks, inclement weather, or responding to forest fires. Most of the work needed from conversation scientists is managing soil erosion, like that seen on farms, or assessing logging activities. Because of fires rapidly breaking out in the western states, most conservation scientists will be hired to control these. However, growth may also take place in the east with conservation groups or logging activity. Those going in the field should know that it is growing at three percent, which is slower than the average.
Those hiring require at least a bachelors degree and will prefer those with a greater understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The most money will likely be made working for the federal government at an average of $76,000. Conservation advocacy groups pay around $60,000, but the local and state governments pay the least.
While it is important to make money and understand your career logically, I want to make sure this job is for me. I wanted to find someone else who is passionate about conservation and get their opinion on the matter. This led me to the “Bat Cave.”
Tumblr media
Bat Woman - the New Superhero
I knew I was arriving at the correct location when I saw a little bat decoration at the base of the mailbox. On the 22nd of February, 2020, I went to see Stephanie Stronsick, president of the Pennsylvania Bat Rescue, to talk about conservation. Steph is a full time environmental student at Kutztown University working on a graduate project having to do with white nose syndrome in bats. She currently rehabilitates 97 bats in her home, and raises children with her husband.
Steph became interested in conservation about 14 years ago. She was living in California at the time, and she started volunteering with a group that adopts exotic pets that didn’t know how to be cared for. She eventually joined Project Wildlife, which is one on the biggest rehabilitation organizations in the Western U.S. She worked with different kinds of birds while there. However, when she moved back to her home state of Pennsylvania, she wanted to help a misunderstood species. She recounted the summers when she’d be at her grandparents’ house and it was a “nightly event” to watch a colony of bats fly around.
The thing that Steph most enjoys about her work is that, “up close, they’re very unique and they all have their own personalities.” She stressed that, “it’s just such an incredible thing to work with species that has such an ecological importance.” She rehabilitates injured bats and when they show positive signs in the flight cage, 70 to 80 percent are released. However, some bats cannot be released and thus serve as education bats. Education is an important part of conservation science.
Steph helped me see just how interwoven the public and individuals are with conservation. She was saying that she will have to compromise and work with timber companies to discuss what is best for both parties. She said that “instead of attacking oil and timber companies… you have to work with them and partner with them and build a relationship.” Community involvement is also vital. The project is reliant on the public finding injured bats and taking them to Steph because she has the knowledge of how to care for them. The rescue also has citizen science programs that encourage home or land owners to install bat houses. By doing this, the people find an interest and a connection to a colony that calls the same land their home.
Although there are amazing things about being a wildlife rehabilitator, it takes a lot of work to be one. Steph said her job is 24 hours. She gets up two and a half hours before her classes to feed and medicate the bats. She also has to be willing to accept calls at anytime if a bat would be in trouble. In the summer, baby bats also demand time as they need to be fed every 2 hours. She explained that most of her time is either spent in her garage where she keeps a majority of bats or outside. She’s outside checking progress in the flight cage, or scouting out a release location, or actually releasing the bats.
The process to become a wildlife rehabilitator is harder in PA compared to other states. For her to get the project up and running she explained that you have to have volunteered at least two years at a wildlife rehabilitation center. Then you must get above an 80 percent on a comprehensive exam, meet the rehabilitation center board, have an inspection done of where you want to do the work; then you can become organization; however, funding is a constant issue for conservationists.
My time at the center was enjoyable and educational. I’ve always enjoyed the process of rehabilitating any animal. Steph spoke soulfully when she said, “When you get to work with a species and save them it changes your whole perception.” I want to get into conservation science because I think it’s such a selfless field. Steph puts in so much time for what we think of as a small species, however, those tiny creatures have such a positive impact on our world, and we just want to work to do the same. I think Steph put it best when she said, “It’s important to me because I like to do this, and to save them, and to watch them get released. That’s my goal and that’s what I’ve been doing for the past 13 years, so it’s almost like a lifestyle.” Rehabilitating bats isn’t the exact lifestyle I want to go into, but if I do any job with an ounce of passion that she has, I know I’ll make a difference.
For conservation scientists to make an impact we must be educated on our world. When I was with Steph she was showing me some bats and explaining why they were there. Some had white nose syndrome, some had injuries from cats, and others were being affected by climate change. This made me want to dig deeper into how humans are affecting animal species.
Changing the World
In 1880 sailors brought foreign predators to New Zealand, and ever since then, the species unique to New Zealand have been under threat. In Erica Wilkinson’s article, "New Zealand has been a Life-raft for Unique Species - but Now They Must Adapt or Die," she explains that on top of habitat loss and foreign predators, climate change could be the human impact to tip the scales. With a newly created biosphere, some species are being forced to adapt or die. Rising sea levels on New Zealand’s coast will flood, and drought will occur inland, leaving both areas uninhabitable. Birds can’t reach their food, bats awake during torpor, their hibernation, and Tuatara, a species of reptile only found in this country, are mostly hatching as males, keeping the species from reproducing. Also, as the ground warms in the alpine regions, animals are forced to migrate to a higher elevation. This allows predators to reach prey that once were out of their reach. In these regions, invasive plants also take the opportunity to grow into alpine regions, wiping out the plant life that is already there. Erica closes her article by saying what humans have done already for trying to help these unique species. She states that in 2016, cobble skinks were gathered and flown to Auckland zoo, where they now wait for a new habitat.
I picked this article because it related to some things that Steph was telling me. When I was there she showed me an evening bat. She told me that they haven’t really been seen in Pennsylvania before because they are a southern bat. However, because of climate change they are moving north. They don’t know how to deal with our cold winters because they don’t hibernate. She was also saying that climate change is causing the barometric pressure to stagger and bats use barometric pressure as a way to tell when to stop hibernating. The rapid change confuses them and they come out looking for food but can’t find any. Many get tired and are found in the winter in unusual places or just on the ground because they couldn’t fly farther.
Tumblr media
I believe that this article could really show people the impact humans have on the ecosystem. New Zealand is an extreme example because they have animals that are completely unique to their country. I’ve always been fascinated by unique species, however, we are losing the chance to ever see these animals in person. New Zealand is also a place I would like to visit one day, so the article caught my attention.
In the United States I want to work to prevent these things from happening. I am only one person, and I can’t fight climate change. However, I want to fight habitat destruction. I want to understand the elements affecting wildlife and teach the public about these things. Like Steph and Erica I think it’s important for the public to understand how we have an impact. The more people who have knowledge of these things can join in the effort to help their home.
It was intriguing to learn about the species specific to New Zealand and how this is affecting them. I would still like to know if they are seeing signs of drought and flooding. I know Australia is on fire and New Zealand is so close. How are the fires in Australia impacting New Zealand? I’m also curious to know if there are any species other than the cobble skink that can now only be found in their zoo. Are there any efforts to find a habitat for them? I also wish I had answers to the questions like, why don’t some people believe in climate change? How do some people not care?
These big questions can’t completely be answered. However, it is important for everyone who cares, to get the word out. We can make a change! I am a big believer in native plants bringing back the essential wildlife. That is why I have a personal mission to plant natives around my house. It is a small thing I can do to make a change. Even Steph said she was starting to implement native plants and because of that she’s never seen more hummingbirds than she has now, and she’s seen new species of bees in her backyard. Everyone can make a difference and I want to work to make sure the public knows this.

Science ask! 1, 2, 11, 21, 38 I... tried to narrow down my curiosity as best as I could :D
Aw, thanks for asking!
1. What’s your major/field?
I have a bachelor’s in biology, and I’m getting my PhD in biology as well. I suppose my focus is animal behavior and physiology, but I fit the stereotype of being in an integrative biology department and loving/using a lot different fields and techniques. My current research is on the impact of monoamine disrupting contaminants (like antihistamines, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, illicit drugs, some pesticides) on insect development, behavior and physiology. My research interests include ecotoxicology, neuropharmacology and neuroscience, entomology, environmental policy (esp. wastewater treatment plant systems), animal behavior (esp. monoamine mediated behaviors which is pretty much everything), and the use of insects as bioindicators. I used to work on seminal fluid proteins, courtship, and endocrine disruptors in flies, and I was a tech in a circadian rythms neuroscience lab for a while and a pancreatic cancer lab for a hot second, still fond of both.
Short answer: Biology forever. I give drugs to bugs.
2. What made you choose your major/field?
I just always loved animals. That’s the simple answer. I liked animals and I’ve been fucking lucky to turn that into a career (so far, we’ll see how finding a postdoc position goes).
I was the dinosaur kid, the cat kid. I did well in science classes, and I loved nature, bird watching, cat shows, animal documentaries. I taught myself mendelian genetics in middle school so I could understand the inheritance of cat coat colors. I read about (and edited wikipedia articles about, yikes) extinct cats. I read falconry books. I volunteered at a zoo, a vet clinic, a humane society. I fostered cats with my family. I wrote stories about wolves and cats and birds.
So, I loved animals. But as a kid, I was exposed to the TV Careers- mostly lawyers, doctors, cops, generic office workers- and apart from “guy who narrates nature documentaries + Steve Irwin” none of those people worked with animals. And the people I met in real life who worked with animals were veterinarians, vet techs, zookeepers. I didn’t know about research careers, or how much behind the scenes stuff happens at museums and zoos, or that animal scientists work at government agencies and in industry. I had the weird experience where lots of my friends parents had doctorates, and one even worked as a bat taxonomist/curator at a museum, but I had no idea what graduate school was until halfway through college. So I went to college and thought I’d be a vet. Maaaaybe a paleontologist (but then I learned that most paleontologists get their undergraduate degrees in geology). And then I sucked freshman year and learned the getting into vet school is harder than getting into med school. I learned about graduate school and research careers from my professors. Literally I wrote a biology paper and the professor asked if I was considering graduate school, because, you know, if you can write like this it might be a good place for you. I did research as an undergraduate, and I loved it. I worked as a tech in a R01 lab and loved it, but wanted to do more research. So, grad school!
11. Who’s your favorite scientist?
Rachel Carson. Silent Spring is a fucking gift that anyone in the sciences should read. She was a brilliant science communicator, and was beloved for her writings on marine life before Silent Spring. She wrote wrote broadly, was published in academic journals and popular magazines, wrote for conservation causes and also wrote lovely descriptions of fisheries and wildlife refuges (like this one about Chincoteague pdf warning) for the government. Oh and she was in love with Dorothy Freeman and there’s a lot of obnoxious hand waving about how it was just a close friendship but y’all they burned a lot of their correspondence, and what we have left is like, guys, Carson was maybe an ace lady and definitely romantically entwined and in love with another lady. She was gay. “Never forget, dear one, how deeply I have loved you all these years.” Fuck off hand waver people. Oh yeah, and she kickstarted the grassroots environmental movement in the United States and was such an important figure that the press were asking Kennedy questions about DDT and he refered to “Miss Carson’s book” because everyone just knew about it. And when the men in government and the chemical industry dismissed her extensive research and her understanding of the impact of pesticides and herbicides on the environment and twisted her message (she never wanted to get rid of all pesticides or human made chemicals, she just wanted any amount of monitoring and regulation and intelligence behind their use) and called her hysterical and a “Priestess of Nature,” well, she testified to before Kennedy’s Science Advisory Committee while dealing with radiation treatments for breast cancer, and the committee basically said “yep, she’s right.” Oh and she’s part of why we even have the Environmental Protection Agency. So yeah, the original ecotox and environmentalism goddess is my favorite. There are others of course. Caroline Herschel the astronomer. Tyrone Hayes is important to me. Jane Goodall of course. Patricia Brennan (duck penises, yes), Corrie Moreau, John Wingfield, Peter and Rosemary Grant, May Britt Moser. Like, pretty much any scientist I meet? Beloved college professors. My current advisor. My friends in my cohort. Science is a group activity, so even admiring Rachel Carson is admiring her mentors, editors, collaborators, sources.
21. If you had infinite funding, what would your research be about?
I mean, if I had infinite funding I’d set up a new funding agency and probably emphasize basic research + science communication + cross discipline research. But I get that that’s not the real question.I want to know what pharmaceuticals and other contaminants are in the bodies of invertebrates in human impacted waterways, and how the changes according to the gradient of landscape usage and also how the life history (diet, lifespan, place in water column, respiration style) affects the accumulation and excretion of those contaminants. We just do not have that data. I mean step one, we don’t even have data for “is there X pesticide or X personal care product found in X insect” so doing a whole battery of assays across a lot sites and species is a whoooole lot to ask. I’d also follow it up with comparing some behaviors and anatomical traits and development and trying to see if there’s any connection between contaminants and those traits. Also do some gene expression measurements, because toxic response pathways/neurotransmitters/all sorts of stuff may be sensitive to exposure to lots of the fun bioactive stuff in the water. Also do lab based experiments with exposure to single compounds and then combinations. Probably throw in some mobile lab stuff too, why not? Oh, and look to see if any contaminants are moving up the food chain and getting into birds, fish, whatever. Also see if emergent insects like mayflies, dragonflies, etc are carrying aquatic contaminants into the terrestrial environment. Oh and see how different wastewater treatment plant types and the geology/hydrology of the water impacts all this stuff. And hire a giant team of people, because I could not do this all on my own, and good science is collaborative, and there are smart people out there who would have great new ideas, aaaaand I think I might be describing my dream lab.
38. Is math a little bit too mathy for you?
Yep. But I kind of love that too? A lot of science is feeling dumb and then figuring something out. So I wish I were better at math, but it’s taken until fucking graduate school for me to both love it and accept that I don’t need to “get” a math thing immediately. So, I’m real slow at math. I’m not sure if I believe that anyone intrinsically has a “math brain” or “is just good/bad at math” because that’s such a dumb yes/no binary but there are definitely people who probably have a low aptitude to start with who are not well served by how math is taught to them and ooooh boy, that was me. I don’t think I ever laid down a solid foundation of math skills; I did not learn either the practical tools for doing math or actual concepts that underpin it. I struggled my ass through upper level classes in middle and high school, but nothing really stuck for me. Even when I learned to perform something, I didn’t get the concepts. I was horrible in college and only took one physics course. And it honestly felt like, why does this matter for biology?Turns out, it matters a lot. Physiology and statistics were what opened me up to caring about math. Learning the equations that can describe exchange of gases, or the flow of blood, or ion exchange made me care. But that was still pretty much plug and chug type math. Graduate level statistics made me care about the math itself. Understanding probability, understanding the concepts behind why this mathematical tool is used in this situation, or that there are different philosophies about the use of statistics (like, woah, Bayesian, hello abuse of p-values)- that was all very delicious. And hard. I love hated that class. Intuitive Biostatistics is a good good book.Loooong post sorry.EDIT: Also seriously thank you for asking. Articulating this stuff is honestly so good for me, even if I get long winded. It reminds me how much I and others care about science.

Should Change In Controlling Stake At DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund Worry You?
Tumblr media
In May 2018, the US-based BlackRock Inc., the world’s largest asset manager, stated that it would sell its 40% stake in DSP BlackRock Investment Managers Pvt Ltd (the AMC) to its joint venture partner DSP Group.
Subsequently, the Board of Directors of the AMC and Trustee Company, DSP BlackRock Trustee Company Pvt Ltd approved this change in controlling stake on May 7, 2018, and later the capital market regulator, SEBI, too waved the no-objection flag.
However, the investors in various schemes of DSP BlackRock Mutual Fund (now known as DSP Mutual Fund) got a bit worried. The Average Assets Under Management (AAUM) managed by DSP Mutual Fund is over Rs 89,400 crore as per the data from the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) as on June 30, 2018.
Should investors be worried?

BlackRock Inc. and the DSP Group have mutually agreed to terminate their joint venture (formed in 2008).
With the above transaction, the DSP Group, a 152-year-old firm and a respected one, headed by Mr Hemendra Kothari, will increase its stake to 100% and will be DSP Investment Managers Pvt Ltd.
Fund sponsors:
The sponsors of the DSP Mutual Fund will now be DSP ADIKO Holdings Pvt Ltd and DSP HMK Holdings Pvt Ltd (collectively referred as “DSP entities”). BlackRock Inc. will cease to be the co-sponsor.
DSP ADIKO Holdings Pvt Ltd and DSP HMK Holdings Pvt Ltd are companies incorporated in 1983 under the Companies Act, 1956 and are also registered with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) as non-deposit taking Non-Banking Finance Companies. These companies have been functioning as investment companies.
The financial performance of fund sponsors:
The financial performance of the past three years for the aforesaid private limited companies as cited in a communiqué to the unit-holders by the fund houses is as under:

Letter to unitholders
)
The DSP entities along with Ms Aditi Kothari Desai and Ms Shuchi Kothari (daughters of Mr Hemendra Kothari) will own 100% of the shares of the AMC. And the DSP entities will own 100% of the shares of the Trustee Company, DSP Trustee Pvt Ltd (formerly known as DSP BlackRock Trustee Company Pvt Ltd.)
Ms Aditi Kothari Desai holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Currently, she is the Executive Vice President heading sales and marketing at the AMC, as well as a member of the Executive Committee.
Aditi holds over two decades of experience. She joined Merrill Lynch’s investment banking group in New York in 1998, primarily working on M&A activities in the Financial Institutions Group. Subsequently, Aditi worked in DSP Merrill Lynch as part of the fixed income sales team and later joined DSP BlackRock in 2002 (then DSP Merrill Lynch Fund Managers), working on various initiatives, including establishing an offshore fund for foreign investors.
Ms Shuchi Kothari holds a Bachelor of Science in Economics from the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. Shuchi is a passionate wildlife enthusiast and a trustee of Wildlife Conservation Trust, whose Chairman is Mr Hemendra Kothari. She is also the Trustee of Hemendra Kothari Foundation (HKF), the Director of Health & Glow Retailing Pvt Ltd and Foodworld Supermarkets Pvt Ltd.
With the change in controlling stake, the AMC and the trustee company will now be closely held by Mr Hemendra Kothari and his daughters. However, this does not alter the basic characteristics of the schemes (including investment objectives) of the fund house, now known as DSP Mutual Fund.
What should an investor do?
With the exit of BlackRock Inc. the DSP group envisages an exciting phase deeply founded on the focus and core tenets of the DSP Group’s philosophy, namely:
The conviction in India’s growth story
The singular focus on asset management in a scientific, professional, process-driven manner
The unwavering belief in managing investors’ money with the right values and principles. Discipline, ethics, integrity, analytical rigour and risk management are the core pillars of the group, on which the group aims to deliver good investment outcomes for its investors.
Fostering a collaborative environment for smart, innovative, and ambitious people to do their best work
Innate culture and DNA that will drive value for investors.
The letter from the fund house to its unitholders also says, “Our team is aligned in values, thinks big and has set the highest standards, which gives the belief that the DSP Group’s future will be bright.”
So far, a number of schemes of the fund house have generated wealth for investors. Going forward, the DSP Group assures you, the investors, that your interest will always be at the core of its business and it will always maintain a relentless focus on doing what’s best for you.
Yet, if you aren’t comfortable with BlackRock Inc. selling its 40% stake in the joint venture, the fund house has provided an option to exit without any exit load, which can be exercised from August 14, 2018 - to September 12, 2018, until 3:00 p.m.

In our view, rushing to sell or redeem your units would not be a prudent idea. A number of schemes of the fund house—across categories— have fared well, adequately compensated investors for the risk taken. Many schemes have displayed consistent performance across market cycles owing to strong investment processes and systems at the fund house and a galaxy of stalwarts at the helm of affairs.
Hence, it would be prudent to ‘wait-and-watch’ for at least around 6 to 12 months and evaluate how the schemes of the fund house perform.
