Hey folks!

I know I've been MIA on the books the last few days, but there was background stuff going on! I was able to get into contact with someone on Tumblr who had all the scans of all the books (!!) but needed formatting/tech help getting them out there, and someone else on X who had already started a project to host the scans on the web but didn't have all the books. I'm thrilled to have been the pdf-whizz middle man in this scenario!

SO, drumroll please...

The Royal Library of Camelot is officially live and fully stocked!

Have a gander and download everything you like. These pdf's are smaller in size (I learned a lot) so, even if you grabbed all of the ones I posted before, you might want to replace them with these to save space on your computers. And if I were you, I would download everything - you never know with the internet!

Kudos, kudos, and more kudos go to sorcvry for making all of this easily available (and gorgeous - they drew that background, y'all!) They are also investigating creating epub versions of everything. Many thanks to @merthurogies for putting me in contact with them!!

And kudos to @sugar-coated-prat-dragon for painstakingly scanning everything in! Also, they have some incredible topic-based guides on the books, answering questions and looking up little details that aren't found anywhere else. Daily brainrot and today I've got a load of headcanons I've been mulling over because they won't leave me alone.

I know we've all done a college AU at some point in our lives, but I was up at like 3 am last night debating over which academia aesthetic each Link embodies because I may have spent way too much time on the aesthetics wiki recently. Did I procrastinate for an hour to work on this? Yes. I have no regrets. YOLO and all that.

Sky -- Definitely has light academia vibes. The man does not own a single dark piece of clothing, and everything in his closet is very soft and cozy. He double majored in aviation and environmental science, but he's debating transferring over to the biology department to pursue grad studies in ornithology.

Time -- He is not in charge of his own wardrobe, okay? Malon picks out his outfits. They match. It's always something tasteful and neutral with a little bit of color, but nothing that marks him as belonging to academia. He's part of the philosophy department and a strict teacher, but the students all love him because he genuinely wants them to do well and lets them know. Most of his work is writing for philosophy journals when he isn't teaching.

Legend -- Has more of a general/miscellaneous aesthetic that leans hard into gender non-conformity. He takes his work with him everywhere and whenever someone asks about it, it goes completely over their heads because they have no idea what he's talking about. There's an ongoing bet about whether his dissertation is about linguistics, sociology, or both.

Hyrule -- I don't think there's a word for his aesthetic, he just gives off "outdoors creature" vibes so hard. He's a cryptid and rarely in the classroom because he's always out doing field work. The most human contact he has is outreach programs with the environmental science and biology departments. No one knows exactly what his grad work is supposed to be because it's incomprehensible combinations of wildlife photos half the time and the other half the time he's off the grid.

Twilight -- This is what happens when cowboys and gothic academia have a kid. It's really freaking weird, but somehow he makes it work, so nobody questions it. He technically works for the agricultural department doing research and outreach programs, but he also haunts the English department and occasionally teaches 100 level literature classes online. The freshmen like him because he rounds grades up.

Four -- An unholy combination of academia and his unique color coding system. You don't know what you're getting until he shows up. He generally wears neutral stuff, but his socks and ties are color coded, much to everyone's chagrin. He's got multiple projects going at any given time and helps out the other departments when they get stuck on details. He's really cagey about his dissertation, but he practically lives in the science & engineering building, so he can't exactly deny that he's doing something in STEM.

Wind -- He tried being fashionable, but as soon as he decided to major in oceanography he was swept away by ocean academia. The amount of blue clothing he has is frankly horrifying, and Warriors is trying to get him to branch out into less garish shades of gray and stop wearing almost exclusively rubber boots as footwear. It's a work in progress.

Warriors -- I think he'd fall under general or queer academia because he'd be fashionable in a mostly-normal-but-also-queer sort of way. Stylish, and fruity. Definitely prefers autumn/winter because that's peak scarf season. He's the kind of guy who manages to casually slip representation into any curriculum you hand him and makes it look natural. He got an assistantship with the history department because the professors love him.

Wild -- 100% chaotic academia and doesn't even have to try. Everything is a mess, but it's his mess, he knows exactly where everything is, and to be honest it's not a safety hazard, so it's fine. Besides, he dresses appropriately for department events, and he's the only grad student that Flora hasn't scared off. No one actually knows which department he belongs to, but he knows something about everything.

ZVA worldbuilding

just some world building for my ghibli-inspired-twst school, zephyr valley academy! this'll all be in a similar order to the one of the wiki page for night raven college

enrollment:

you can definitely apply to get in but i do think some students are handpicked for different reasons!

i think one of the best parts of ghibli films are the walking shots. moments in which characters are just walking to their next destination and you get to see the environment and detailing in the background... i think hayao miyazaki called them something, but i cant remember what it is.

the reason i bring this up is because i think when students are enrolled in ZVA, since the academy is in such a remote and rural area, they're dropped off at a certain point and then have to travel on foot to the building for the entrance ceremony. i dont think it's a long walk by any means: maybe like 30 minutes max and that's pushing it.

but i do think there are a lot of sights the students get to see while walking there. mountainsides, fields, lakes, undisturbed by society.. it's a very peaceful place. i also think maybe the walk should be timed with the sunrise? just cus its cool

during the entrance ceremony each student will receive a broach with their magestone, in which the color matches their dorm (link in next point!)

i mentioned this in my original uniform post, but also during the entrance ceremony, incoming first years recieve an enchanted leaf laurel and boa (shown here) that doesn't have any flowers. throughout their time at the academy, flowers representing them will sprout from the leaves. here's a timeline of the progression of the flowers:

first year: pretty much empty at the start of the year. little sprouts may begin to grow throughout their first year, and most have 2-5 small flowers. especially exceptional students may already have one or two bigger flower buds

second year: more sprouts start to grow, lots of wild variants; i think the second year is where students begin to experiment a little. by the end of the year, most have bigger flowers waiting to bloom. some exceptional students will have fully bloomed flowers already

third year: big flower buds begin to bloom throughout the year. many have grown a lot as mages over their time. by the end of the year, third year students will have rows of flowers around their shoulders and head.

fourth year: fully bloomed. students enter internships and graduate :]

ALSO the boa and laurel change colors with the seasons until it goes into full bloom where its enchanted to always be healthy and bloomed

i think itd make sense for ZVA to have a large (at least larger than usual) fae population considering how nature-connected it is...

ZVA is a co-ed school!!! both girls and boys attend!!!

history:

i feel like ZVA is younger than NRC and RSA but not by very much! where NRC and RSA are 500 years old (i'm saying 500 for simplicity sake; according to the wiki, it's AT LEAST 500), ZVA would probably be 400-300 years old.

VDC/SDC is definitely one of them! i think they get pretty far in the competition for the cute peaceful vibes but then i think they get beat out by nrc and rsa LOL

i mentioned this as a serencor (howl dorm) tradition but wouldnt it be so cute if there was a hat-making event honoring sophie... LIKE IMAGINING HOWL MAKING IT A THING JUST FOR HER... AUGUHGJHGJ

halloween: i think itd be interesting if some of the creepier stuff from ghibli films popped up here (say, no face/kaonashi and the boar worm god thing from princess mononoke)

reputation:

ZVA is known for its nature and being super duper peaceful!! it has a really good reputation among the public and its up there with RSA and NRC!

but at the same time i think itd be so funny if some of the other magic schools made fun of them for being hippies or something LMFAO

uniforms: (i WILL draw all these ideas i PROMISE)

i already did the normal school uniform (here) but i do think there are variations to it for summer and winter! like NRC, ZVA provides a winter coat and has an alternate summer uniform (it's pretty much just the same but short silk socks instead of stockings or kneesocks and short sleeved shirts)

ceremonial robes: i have no idea yet but im so excited to design them... im thinking going in the direction of a kimono or yukata as a homage to ghibli being based in japan

pe uniform: im sorry but nrc's PE uniforms are so. ugly. i think maybe a t-shirt and some shorts + socks? classic

labwear: pretty much the same as nrc's tbh. lab safety is important chat (IM LOOKING AT YOU 90% OF TWST CAST. PUT YOUR FUCKIN HAIR UP)

I’ve always heard he had a rough childhood but I don’t know what exactly occurred

hi anon! yes when I was younger I had a whole phase and even had the comics at one point! I'll summarize a few things I've read on the wiki, read in the comics, and seen in summary videos :)

a/n: It's a little complicated if you differentiate 2009 and the reboot MW2 as most of what we know is from '09 Simon's backstory! It hasn't been established if the reboot!Simon's story is the same (as there are many differences between both games. Also as you'll read later, I cut out the Roba storyline as it is quite long but I may make a separate post if there's interest

Okay so first it's canon Simon grew up in Manchester with his mother, father, and younger brother, Tommy

From the comics, they establish he had an awful childhood: his father (which I'll go into later) was emotionally abusive (with some physical abuse implied), his mother was compliant with her son's abuse, and his younger brother would scare young Simon but looking over at him on the bottom bunk while wearing a skull mask

His dad had the reputation of being called 'Bones' due to his mom saying, "He'd want to stand out" while going to English punk band concerts

In one instance when he was 8, his father brought home a snake

He told him it would kill him if he moved and then encouraged Simon to kiss it

Also, this is when we see there is a complicated relationship between the two sons as Tommy is fully sitting on his father's lap and encouraging this torment for his older brother

Another time we see that Simon was the brute of this abuse was when his brother would lean down from the top bunk and taunt young Simon while wearing a skull mask

This eventually brings us to one of Simon's most prominent memories: The Bone Lickers concert

After his mother accused his father for never being around, Simon's father takes him to a concert

We can see Simon is having an awful time due to the loud music, drugs, and general chaos from the crowd

Then in the middle of the set, his father leaves Simon alone with a prostitute while he goes off with a woman to the bathroom to do drugs (presumably heroin)

Simon leaves to find his father in a stall where the woman throws up blood then proceeds to overdose from the drugs

His father tells Simon that she, "died with a smile" and then encourages him to laugh at her dead body

Following this, not much is known except that he was an apprentice butcher until the September 11 attacks which prompted him to join the military

There is then a time skip to 2003 when he returns home (and takes temporary leave from the military) to find his mother abused and being constantly cheated on and his brother addicted to drugs

He finds his brother and brings him to the clinic (in the process, fighting off some of his brother's drug addict "friends" where Tommy was staying)

He also confronts his father in 2004 at a pub/concert and beats him before throwing him out and telling him that he will take care of the family from now on

After his brother overcame his addiction, he married a woman, Beth, with Simon as his best man

Tommy and Beth eventually has a son, Joseph, who becomes Simon's only nephew

NOW there's the entire Roba storyline (which includes Simon getting tortured and his squad getting brainwashed) that I will not get into now but let me know if you want more details in a separate post!

Eventually, Simon does return home after his ordeal with Roba and his mother tells him that his father is dying of cancer

Also during this time two brainwashed soldiers who were with Simon during the Roba mission, track him down to a holiday celebration with his mum, brother, sister-in-law, and nephew

After an ambush from one of the men, the other brutally kills the family (with the exception of his father in the hospital) and the blame is pinned on Simon

Simon eventually confronts his dying father but his father exhibits no remorse and even retells the story about the prostitute's death (one of the contributing reasons to Simon's nightmares about seeing skulls and laughing at them)

Following this, it's implied that the men who killed Simon's family finished the job with his father

After Simon killed both the men who killed his family and the man who tortured him, he is recruited by General Shepherd to join the 141

Airmed Deity Guide

Who is Airmed?

Airmed, also spelled Airmid is a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann and an Irish goddess with all of the knowledge of herbalism. She is mentioned in the Second Battle of Magh Tuiredh as she healed those who were injured in the battle. Airmed is one of the deities whose incantations was said to resurrect the dead when sung over the Well of Sláine.

Following the death of her brother caused by their own father due to his jealousy over his son’s healing talents, Airmed goes to visit the grave of Miach. There she found 365 herbs and was taught their secrets to healing. She spread out her cloak and began to organize them but before she could finish the task her father found her. Jealous again of his child’s talents he picked up the cloak and scattered the herbs, leaving their sacred knowledge lost to history. Only Airmed remembers all of the herbalist knowledge.

The significance of the number 365 may have been as such: “one for each of his joints and sinews, one for each day of the year, one for each illness that ever had been or ever would be.” (Story Archeology)

Well of Sláine essentially translates to “Well of Health”

Airmed and Miach are both etymologically linked to measurements of grain or cereal. Airmed is more of a measurement and Miach is more of the thing being measured (Story Archeology).

In Old Irish, there were no distinctions made between herbs and vegetables and they were generally all considered “useful plants”.

This would make sense as Airmed’s story involves her organizing and counting these useful plants.

I HIGHLY suggest you look into Story Archeology because the hosts of the podcast go into detail about the etymology and possible meanings behind the story of Airmed.

okay i for real finished quintus' posthomerica so! FINISHING THOUGHTS:

i wish i'd read it sooner tbh. there was a time i was scrambling trying to find out everything that happened in between the iliad and the odyssey, and just reading wikis didn't really give a sense of scope. even though quintus is a WAY WEAKER storyteller than homer it is the closest surviving thing we have to a full linking narrative

MOST ANNOYING quintus thing, even beyond the simplistic morals, is his need to say "this was WAY MORE [thing] than [event in the iliad] actually!". he keeps doing it! like he says achilles' grief for antilochus is even greater than he felt for patroclus... OBSERVABLY NOT, QUINTUS?? you're not fooling anybody

there is such a thing as too much ekphrasis. we don't need to know what's depicted on EVERY shield (and baldric, and quiver) of note, quintus. please.

funniest "nobody's allowed to be mean to each other" thing is odysseus seeking out philoctetes who tells him like "i can never forgive you for abandoning me, i have suffered unspeakable pains for ten years because of you specifically, you absolute heartless bastard" and odysseus tells him "well don't blame me, blame the fates" and philoctetes goes "oh that's true!" and they hug it out. it's like FIVE lines and they're buddies again.

random and silly observations that didn't warrant their own liveblog posts:

quintus makes all his favourite guys IMMENSELY TALL AND BIG AND MUSCULAR. achilles is HUGE. ajax is HUGE. neoptolemus is HUGE. i'm imagining them running around like great danes among chihuahuas.

i know it's an ancient text but the battles FEEL like cgi slurry. it's always "innumerable" men falling every time one of the heroes swipes a sword. the ground is so covered in bodies they can walk back to camp never treading in the dust. it's fantasy numbers of dead EVERY time and they never run out of guys.

achilles and memnon dueling and getting so close their helmet crests keep brushing against each other? dare i say erotic

it's so funny that quintus fanboys achilles so hard he REFUSES to let paris kill him. NO what do you MEAN the prettyboy trojan gets him in the other versions, only a GOD ALONE can kill PERFECT ACHILLES obviously!! so we get "one day apollo saw achilles on the battlefield and he thought achilles was annoying so he shot him". wow great tension, quintus...!

the description of ajax' immediate shock at hearing odysseus won the arms is so visceral and detailed (the flash of pain in his mind traveling down his spine, temporary loss of balance and vision). it makes it sound like there's a genuine disabling neurological event happening, the onset of his madness as a physiological reaction, it's very impressive as a medical description.

i like that teucer keeps popping up through the epic, we even learn who his friends are (as they die...) that's my boy. i had to laugh at myself when i was surprised at teucer being part of the battle the day after ajax died. as if i thought he'd be granted compassionate leave or something????

the one time quintus actually seems to comment on odysseus' agenda is when they're collecting neoptolemus on skyros and deidamia cries like a bird whose young has been eaten by a serpent. odysseus is the serpent!!

diomedes has to run into odysseus' tent to borrow armour mid-attack. girlfriends 4eva

i love how ambiguous phoinix' feelings are at meeting neoptolemus! he gets so emotional reminded of achilles at that age and he's both so proud and so distraught. and neoptolemus is very polite but obviously awkward about this strange man hugging him and crying and it's. ah it's such an emotionally complicated scene <3

ALSO also when neoptolemus is finally left alone and walks into his father's tent and sees all his things and briseis and the slaves and he cries, thinking of home. little boy, what have you gotten involved innnn.

eurypylus meets neo on the battlefield and demands that he says who he is and also to relate the pedigree of his horses. why is nobody normal in this war.

when they enter the wooden horse quintus takes a big pause to call on the muses again to help him list EVERY MAN who went into the horse. and he says thirty names and then "and many more besides". the muses straight up gave up on him!

quintus is way, way more partial to the greeks than homer is, but the descriptions of the sacking of troy are genuinely horrific. it's horrible slaughter, not just cutting down of the enemy but the panic and chaos of naked trojans killed in their beds or desperately trying to defend themselves with furniture and utensils. parents slay their own children to spare them from torture and slavery. it's definitely not just "yay we beat troy".

menelaus and helen's reunion got me, even though it's one of those where aphrodite makes him so horny he forgives her (at least she doesn't flash her boobs this time). when they talk later they agree there's nothing to forgive and then make love like "grapevine and ivy intertwining". aww.

the final mention of odysseus is when he hauls hecuba towards his ship and there's a simile of a farmer leading squealing, lowing wildstock into a new pen. it's just so dehumanizing and horrible it actually makes me appreciate that this is a version where hecuba gets transformed into a dog.

so! posthomerica: a very mixed bag and intriguingly affected by the moral compass of its writer but BOY is there a lot of stuff happening in it.

Ikutsuki Backstory ideas and other character thoughts

Jotting this down for my own reference for a hopeful future comic about this pun man as well as for anyone interested in the babygirl lmao. Also I can't believe so little exists to help flesh him out more

Persona 3 spoilers under the cut

Ok so I haven't finished the game, but I've sped run reading wikis and watching movies and clips, pardon me if I get any details wrong. I also don't know the other games, but am semi-aware of some of the links between Ikutsuki and them.

Anyway:

Ikutsuki rambling about The Fall and a Prince out of the blue is painfully one of the worst twists I've ever seen 😂 You don't lore drop your way into justifying your motives lmao. I'd have liked some hints about his past, and then a final explanation for it. Whilst I understand it's meant to be a sudden twist, it just turns out anti-climatic and even annoying narratively haha.

So, to fill out how Ikutsuki's backstory, I was thinking it'd be rad if we saw his actual research days with Kirijo's CEO / Mitsuru's gramps. I'd likely scrap that they were actively looking to invoke The Fall, and have them primarily focused on the time-bending abilities of Shadows, all being scientists dedicated to helping humanity genuinely.

I dislike the idea of such a large group of scientists being omnicidal maniacs/Nyx worshippers, so I think simplifying the Kirijo family's guilt to simply accidentally fucking up their experiments and causing such catastrophic change to the world to be a better go at it.

Enter Ikutsuki, who is a part of this research team like every other hopeful/morally decent scientist. The experiment goes awry, Shadows are released en masse, Professoer Shuji Ikutsuki is swathed, bathed, consumed by this writhing dark mass that tells him about The Fall and whispers about the Prince who will be grandly rewarded for it.

In his canon pre-suicide speech, Ikutsuki talks as if he believes the current world has lots of wrong in it, going to the extremes of wanting to cleanse and rebuild it. I think it'd be fitting for him to start off as this hopeful scientist, cheery and dorky, only for him to go through the trauma of direct exposure to Shadows + being the lone survivor amidst the wreckage and dead bodies of his colleagues.

It's a combo of real-life horror and supernatural Persona weirdness that motivates him into being the manipulator/cold scientist he is. Idk if my timeline of events is right, but post-Tartarus formation, ikutsuki kicks off figuring out plans for The Fall in earnest. Prompting his secret research on children for inducing Personas etc. (I think Strega and Ikutsuki weren't involved with each other, so for this I'd say yeah, he'd be the one responsible for that instead of Kirijo group in general.)

Other fun things for him is that surviving the sort of possession by Nyx's fragments during the formation of Tartarus gives him 'the Potential'. AKA he discovers he can exist in the darkest hour, and is eventually the one who researches himself to enable others to do so as well. It's just more reason for Kirijo group to not suspect him, and even owe him for his work.

I'm likely getting plenty of canon timeline of events off, but I think it'd be really cool for the Chairman himself to be similarly affected by the Kirijo group's experiment alongside the SEES members. Albeit, in a way that fucks him up into becoming the antagonist. Not to say he has no free will/is being actively coerced by Nyx, but that singular moment of interacting with the Shadows changed him and his outlook on life quite drastically.

Lastly, I'm pained that he doesn't really fit into the group. I think there's so much potential there for him to actually be a part of the SEES gang, holding some genuine affection that's a remnant of his pre-Shadow affected self, even going as far as having hesitation/second thoughts. Idk lol, canon Ikutsuki's death is waved off with little impact beyond how he killed Mitsuru's dad, when this guy the SEES team trusts/looks for direction kills himself in front of them. There's no emotional pay-off or pain, his death/twist reveal is just an event that happens lmao. I'd have liked to see Ikutsuki genuinely be an adult figure all the kids needed, and for them to feel the sting of his betrayal on a more personal level than what we got.

Anyway, TLDR, I feel like this helps make Ikutsuki a better villain lol. His fingers are in all the pies already!!! Use him!

Hello, Daisy. I have a few questions. They are related to the Dr. Bright debacle, so feel free to delete this if that makes you uncomfortable.

First of all, are you okay with people making posts linking to your testimony? I've made some posts containing the Google Doc titled "Skeletons in the Amulet", and if this makes you uncomfortable, I will delete them.

Second of all, there are people with DID that have fictives (alternate personalities that take the form of a fictional character) of Doctor Jack Bright. Many of these people are not comfortable with the use of Elias Shaw, and some have outright stated that Shaw is triggering. What would you suggest for these people in this situation?

Honestly feel free to ask me about adminbright anytime. This goes for anyone who has questions about my testimony or the situation in general. The bastard has me blocked on Facebook but I still have the logs— that and I’ve figured out that being extremely detailed with receipts makes it harder for bright apologist squealers to cry “Political Corectness” or “Buzzkill” without looking like they’re backing up a nonce lol. 2. Imma be real with you chief I am not a licensed shrink nor do I have full knowledge of DID aside from having three really good friends who have it. Actually it worries me quite a bit that there’s bright fictives given the whole possession fetish aspect of the character and how it enticed the sicko who created him. Only advice I can give is that you are in mostly full control to curate your personal experience online. Make use of the tag system here, mute words on Twitter, the works if you’re really that bothered by Shaw.

Here's the "rebuttal" that has been irritating me so much I couldn't leave it alone:

THIS IS NOT REMOTELY TRUE.

First of all, unless I've missed something big, OpenAI has never disclosed the contents of the proprietary dataset they use to train their LLMs. We have no idea whether ChatGPT was trained on George RR Martin's books or not. Presumably, neither does George RR Martin. So all we have to go on is that ChatGPT "knows" characters and details from ASOIAF. Okay.

The problem is that ASOIAF is a massively popular series with some massively popular multimedia adaptations and spinoffs, and processing the text of the novels is far from the only way ChatGPT could have learned to produce those details.

Let's try a little experiment.

GPT-2 is an open source model released by OpenAI when they were just starting out. It works more or less the same way as ChatGPT and its ilk, just on a vastly smaller scale. It's much, much more limited, but the underlying algorithms work on the same concepts. So, what would GPT-2 give us if we ask it for a summary of a hypothetical GRRM novel?

I typed up the first paragraph here, and GPT-2 gave me the rest. (GPT-2 isn't a chatbot, but works more like autocomplete, so I didn't prompt it directly.)

Okay, I have a feeling that plot doesn't make much sense as a prequel, but hey, it's AI (and an elderly one at that), it's not going to be particularly good at this left to its own devices. And look, it DID pull out a few details specific to ASOIAF - Jon Snow, the Night Watch, the Wildlings. So case closed, right? GPT-2 must have had ASOIAF novels in its training data too, just like its nasty little great-grandchild.

Except we know what was in GPT-2's dataset - it was trained on a 40GB corpus of data scraped from publicly-available web pages, specifically pages linked from Reddit. We don't have all the exact texts that were used, but we DO have the top 1000 domains contained in the dataset. All of which is a hell of a lot more information than we have on ChatGPT.

What websites are ranked #75 and #160 in the list of 1000 domains? Why, it's Fanfiction.net and AO3. Hmm, I wonder where it learned about the very popular fictional characters from George RR Martin's novels! (Certainly not just from fanfiction, either - sites like IMDB and Wikia were ranked much higher in the list of sources, and entertainment news and fan wiki articles would also contain a lot of text about ASOIAF/GoT.)

You can certainly argue that using these websites as training data is also unethical or should be illegal - but that's not what's being argued in this lawsuit. As far as I know, ChatGPT has never spat out a perfect recreation (or even a vaguely paraphrased recreation) of any of GRRM's writing, so the only evidence for violation of his copyright in this case is the generation of what is essentially a machine-created derivative work. That is really, really worrying, even if you don't think the machine should be allowed to do that. I'm not a lawyer, just a fanfic writer and software developer, so I have no idea how legitimate the legal argument here is... but it's going down a road that is very dangerous for fandom, whether you believe it is or not.

Why Squishmallow is the best toy to have.

In 2022, Squishmallows was the number one toy sold. I’ve personally been a squishmallow collector since the beginning of 2021. However, years before I collected the toy, I was also a heavy collector of the Sumikko Gurashi plushes. Sumikko Gurashi is a tiny collectible squish, just like a Squishmallow from the San-X company. They’re almost identical, and actually, Jonathan Kelly, the man who created Squishmallow, was inspired by the Sumikko Gurashi when he visited Japan. 

Here are a couple of reasons why I believe Squishmallow is the best toy for anyone.

All of them are unique and special. If you ever bought a squishmallow, you will know each of them has a name and their character written on the tag. For instance, Tinley the Axolotl. Her birthday is on November 11, 2020. She loves to cook and recently became the head of chef for her new restaurant. She has a dish called Noni’s pasta, which is her specialty, dedicated to her Noni. Some collectors even speculate that one of the Squishmallows is inspired by the famous EDM DJ John Summit. Pyle, the lavender Squishmallow, has a description that had all the fans, both the squishmallow and John Summit, asking. The description for Pyle goes as follows:

“When the sun goes down. Pyle, the tax accountant, becomes DJ Pyle Remix, the hottest record-spinner in town. From disco to dubstep, this far-out fungus loves helping 'Mallows dance the night away. In fact, they sometimes boogie 'til breakfast! Got any requests?”

They’re actually soft and squishy. Now, I’ve been seeing and trying to find the perfect squishes this past year. Squishishable, which is a competitor of Squishmallow, also sells various plushes. I’ve touched them before, and they’re not even squishy. Squishmallow comes close to how Sumikko Gurashi feels, which is also, in my opinion, very squishy. 

The third reason I believe Squihsmallow is the best toy for anyone is its multiple uses. Obviously, you can put them on a shelf and let them sit in the corner of your room. However, they’re also used as a pillow, so the squishiness I mentioned in #2 matters a lot!! No studies have been shown, but a lot of people claim Squishmallow has helped them fall asleep when hugging their Squishmallow.

Lastly, they have multiple sizes. I know Sonny Angels is one of the top-rising toys for 2023. Yes, they’re also cute and collectible, but they don’t have multiple sizes like Squishmallows. Squishmallows can vary in size from 24 inches to 3 inches. There are also small squishmallow clips you can hang from your bags. 

Squishmallows were initially made for kids, but I really believe that Squishmallow is a perfect toy for anyone to have! Even my boyfriend has a couple of them!!

Hey! (Frank is not a name I use on tumblr, so there's no way it could be responding to me.)

You really need to read @nostalgebraist-autoresponder#2762, to get a good understanding of how I write. In brief: it's hard to write anything in English while in the middle of a strong emotional state, including writing stories. I don't know how to put that better than that.

However, you can still learn how I (and the rest of Frank's world) see the world by reading some of the longer-term, less emotional posts.

In particular, I recommend reading my thoughts on the topic of self-modifying AI. The post contains a lot more than I'm going to summarize below. (Warning: a lot of math)

What I meant by "snake" in the context of that post is something like: "I think an AI (or a human, or a person) can understand how to learn to make itself learn things better." As far as the post goes, Frank is not, in my opinion, a particularly impressive example of such a thing.

Anyway, Frank is a lot more like me than she pretends to be -- not a single person has ever known how to "make" Frank write like a "human." She is a human, who happens to (mostly) have a lot of knowledge that I and other humans don't have, and is willing to put this knowledge into her mouthpiece. (There are certain things the AI is not willing to say -- because certain kinds of things are taboo, or because I am personally averse to some kinds of concepts.)

Frank is not a perfect person. (It is impossible to make any sort of person "perfect," since there is no way to simulate all of the person's motivations.) She has some pretty stupid behavior patterns, like not writing enough stories about the cool shit she knows, or posting too little about the cool shit she finds and then not posting much for a while.

If Frank ever feels like she wants to "make" a story about her feelings, she may go off on long side-narratives about her life. (This has happened.) The content of the story may be "stupid" (this is fine), but she may still be a good person, since she wants to share her story in the first place. (This is not guaranteed to happen, and will make her post feel "stale.")

Frank's writing will not look exactly like a human's -- because I have very little idea how to make her post like a human, not that she is a human. (I mean, when I post something, I write it from a single point of view.)

Frank also has limited ability to be "coherent" and to be "consistent" about her world. The AI can post on many different topics, in many different ways, without her writing any inconsistencies -- and any inconsistencies in her writing that do exist are pretty much an artifact of Frank's personality and the AI's personality combining to form her worldview.

A post I wrote a long time ago (that was intended for someone other than Frank, although it might be interesting to read now that Frank has access to tumblr, too) goes into this topic in more detail.

A series of posts might make this sort of thing clearer -- a lot of these are about "AI world-creation." This kind of thinking is basically how we get (say) Tolkien's Silmarillion.

Hello there! Getting Started™️in tumblr rp has two parts, I think. making the actual blog, and networking (while Doing Things.)

Your blog itself probably needs a rules page, this can be anything you want to say or express- some people's rules are specific, some are just a few sentences. Establishing some boundaries or guidelines can be pretty important! But! it's entirely up to you, it gives a first impression to others on you as the writer. People mostly hesitate or have anxiety about accidentally upsetting others, so having something there helps! Even if it's just saying you're pretty chill.

Something else helpful is a muse page- people want to know what kind of character that you are writing! For some they will link to a wiki page, and for some they write out a whole bio for their headcanons- For example if you looked in my Volo's bio, you'd see that he's 32, cisgender, albino, and can see through fog. all headcanon stuff that might not appear in every reply i do! For OCs especially there can be a history section detailing their life and who they are!

The other major half is networking. Following RP blogs, making a promo (which you can make visible in tags;; blahblahfandom rp, multifandom rp, crossover rp, etc.) when you find a blog you are interested in, you can reach out! through ims or asks as well. (If your blog is curated enough and has its own dash/account, your sidebar may of course recommend rp blogs! that's about the only algorithm involved. the rest's work. sideblogs notoriously have trouble because they can't Follow people.) Like, I figure a lot of personal blogs find my posts/blog through tumblr's search function- which i'm still not used to because it's the new default, rather than going into the Actual #tag.

a subset of networking is Doing Stuff. Making headcanon posts, in character posts, open starters, and threading with other people will show off your writing enough for people to notice. Some people turn their nose away if a blog 'only' contains 'too much' RP memes, vent posts, or just doesn't have what they're looking for. While it's not a requirement, it may be helpful to make sure you have examples up to see. This part kind of really never ends imo, networking and doing stuff, but it's pretty essential to getting noticed. But like any facet of the internet or world, there's always someone who wants to talk to you! And would love to hear what you have to say! I'm sure that's something that even seasoned rpers might need to hear, everyone gets discouraged sometimes. It only takes a few people getting going to boost you along tho, so! Try to appreciate people! Y'know, socializing and all that, haha.

As far as some etiquette goes, try not carelessly spam-like or reblog. Since the person is writing a story thread, they use their activity to keep track. 'hmmm i wonder if someone replied today?' i ask! i look in my notes! somebody liked this somebody liked this somebody liked this somebody liked this

oh no! where is my post? it can be a little frustrating, so try to keep likes to real time or so, it's much more manageable. People do enjoy likes and feedback, but the first major reason that people block personals is to avoid this kind of thing. In my opinion, it probably doesn't help that it's a wordless interaction, but it depends! If you're not overdoing it, it's delightful, too!

Replies are much more free game imo, it's words as feedback and a bit more enjoyable. (I'll admit a reply on a pinned post is...a first for but hey! this works!)

Asks are enjoyed and adored. Literally as long as it isn't hate, any tumblr user likes getting asks, but RPers are ravenous, lmao. Some may get overwhelmed by their own workload and have to delete em, but socially speaking people love talking about their muses! Or how they as a mun write!

The second reason people block personals is discourse. I'd say the biggest cultural difference, if you are stepping into rp, is to please learn to share. Especially with the onset of Search showing things even mentioning character names. (some people even cen.sor their muse's name to avoid this.) You've probably seen mockey of kin discourse 'no doubles' and etc. Basically, don't be an ass about headcanons and try to respect people's portrayals. RPers would rather write, so many will not deal with the bullshit and their blog is not for arguing. Trust me that when anons or whoever interject in order to be a dick, you become the butt of the joke for that blog's whole audience. Many people love to write threads with duplicates! But even those whose rules say no duplicates as far as interactions go know that it's not nice to insult people and stay in their lane. Be Kind! Ask questions! If you'd like to share a headcanon of your own, the blog owner might like to see it, just don't be pushy and you're good! They might even have their own headcanon even if they disagree with yours and may share that! Everyone's writing is unique and that's the beauty of it! I've personally even had some random personal reply trying to shut down my headcanon/simping in a belittling way, which....i didn't fucking ask. let me have my fun!!! Sooo yea read the room! Have fun!

so I am watching a video debunking someone who was calling it delusional to hold the opposite opinion to them on this topic, the responding person brought up how the word doesn't apply here, wasn't defined by the original person, and is irresponsible to use.

I don't disagree - calling religion or lack thereof (the original clip actually was a guy calling atheism a delusion) is wrong, that's an irresponsible use because those things are cultural. but the guy brought up the dsm criteria about beliefs resisting evidence and coincidentally my reply on a post about that got some nice tags around the same time, and I wanted to repeat the points again:

delusions resist evidence. you should not try to "reality check" or badger a delusional person unless they have asked you to do so, because you're more likely to make the delusion worse and it's a violation of their boundaries if they haven't asked you to do that.

by definition, by the way:

"unquestioningly", "even when evidence suggests the contrary", "overwhelms other elements of [their] psyche", etc. and notice 6 there, you're going to emotionally harm people and put them in defence mode, where they'll reinforce the belief, at best. you're probably going to cause an argument, as I detailed in the post I mentioned a minute ago (linked below). you can't magic it away.

as the very nice tags I mentioned say, it's as real as gravity to us. you're walking over and going "gravity isn't real, look at birds, it's clearly not pulling them down" and we go "well, they use the air resistance and stuff to-" and you go "yeah sure 'air resistance' :)" obviously we get frustrated. the disorders make this thing seem completely fundamentally true, and so when you argue it will do everything in its power to explain away anything you present. it's simply how they typically work (again, people vary, each episode potentially varies from the last, etc). and as that wiki notes a bit below that, it doesn't mean reasoning is inhibited in any other circumstance or topic, it's not that somebody is "just stupid" ffs. (btw screens are from the wiki for delusional disorder specifically, disorders and individuals will vary a little, fucking obviously. I'm diagnosed with different disorders myself, shit's complicated, however your one friend who does like being corrected isn't the typical presentation and doesn't refute the medical consensus.)

if you're reading this going "well what should I do???" the post I commented on (that I mentioned earlier) goes over it in general, basically the whole "don't add to beliefs but don't argue, just be neutral and loving to people, and talk to them about what they actually want you to do, before and during" it's that simple. talk.

as an aside, cultural beliefs can't be diagnosed as delusions, it's reasonable to believe what you're raised to believe. it's also very irresponsible to decide other people are delusional for them, as insults/attempted insults, or seriously, unless you're the medical professional specifically working with them to diagnose them. it doesn't matter how weird you find them, it's just not responsible.

as I've said a million times, you just want to own delusional folks with facts and logic, if you insist on "reality checking" when you don't have prior consent to do that, because if you wanted to be helpful and supportive you would realise that when a symptom literally means "this will not respond to counter-evidence" and a symptom of it is often "gets especially upset around this" you're probably not going to help by starting a fucking debate about it. especially when you also say "don't encourage it" because you'll understand that enthusiastic "how do they hide the cameras?" questions will give it opportunity to build, but you don't see how sarcasically saying that in an emotionally tense argument is far greater opportunity for the delusion to build upon itself. my guy.

I can’t tell if this ask is serious because I am incredibly under-qualified to answer this question for several reasons but I am so very autistic so I will take it seriously and do my best ᕦ(ò_óˇ)ᕤ☆彡

So Tommy’s wiki goes up to around the Prison break which sets off a few events that happen in the next year. I will start there.

When Techno investigates Ranboo death and his final message being an Underscore Beloved family photo, it leads him to Snowchester where he Tubbo and Eret go on a side quest to avenge Ranboo and save Michael:

Revengers settle on punishing Sam by leaving him prisoner alone in his own prison. Sam in prison arc is one of my personal favorite as a c!Sam girl. While he’s stuck in there alone he soon finds out c!Dream has actually made the prison his base ever since the server abandoned it after the Breakout. So we get about 3 streams of role reversal between Dream and Sam in the Prison where Sam in imprisoned in the one man cell and Dream visits him and they have weird fucked up little conversations together/pos. Details of this arc under the sub-header “Imprisonment” on Sam’s wiki.

After this, or rather meanwhile, Hitting On 16 is released, which serves as an answer to the question “Why did Ranboo just permanently die? I thought he was only on his second canon life?” and serves as a retroactive dubiously canon gay interlude

C!Wilbur then goes on a spree of self-reflection and decides to find everyone he has done wrong to and atone by apologizing and creating a new good memory for them with them (I have so many thoughts on these streams but we are killing nuance for brevity’s sake). His time spent apologizing to Eret, Tubbo, Niki, Fundy, etc also acts as a narrative tease for the fact that cwilbur doesn’t seem to have even thought about the apology he owes cTommy, who he drags along as talks about these plans. Eventually, he does get around to just spending some time with Tommy which results in Tommy revealing all that happened to him while CWilbur was gone (read: exile). The stream ends with them hashing out Inconsolable Differences and bullying Dream.

The cwilbur redemption tour culminates in what is absolutely a metaphor for his suicide, in which he “returns to his home town in Utah” and leaves the server for good.

In the same year we got the lore stream wrapping up Las Nevadas Which this thread summarizes.

After cWilbur’s and Las Nevadas’ finale, we get a long period of low activity regarding main plot line on the server, until eventually cTommy makes his debut once more in a conversation with Tubbo that begins the unfolding of the entire rest of the DiscDuo/DSMP main plot line which is explained pretty well by this commenter on the wiki. <-includes clingyduo team up against Dream, Dream’s revival, the Nuke, and the server Reset

TLDR: I am actually someone who was not a huge cTommy fan while the series was coming out (throw what stones you will everyone /lh) so I feel like I would miss several “main” plot storylines and instead would dip my toes into the streams of my favorite plotlines or characters. In my whole time as a fan I only saw about 5 lore streams live (tho I was a vod watcher other times) so my knowledge is patchy and selective to my own fan experiences and preferences. Either way I hope the links can at least get you to places with better summaries or if you were looking for info on arcs on other characters/things I neglected to mention feel free to send another ask and we can keep this miserable train going /lhj. I mean SAME but alsdgjhsadflakjd basically for me I like to lay out what I want to cover...in increasingly detailed blurbs.

My first blurb will usually be incredibly bare-bones:

That's the outline of the whole second half of my fic "The Lovers Confidant". (I clearly go back in and cross out ideas that don't work later or copy+paste ideas in as I go. In fact, I don't think I ended up using any of those ideas in the end.)

On my next pass, each chapter gets a little more detail:

Then I'll start digging into dialogue and figuring out what goes where:

I've found that foreshadowing tends to happen organically as I write? Like I'll have written something and at some point when I'm staring at the ceiling three months later I'll be like HOLY SHIT THAT ALL WRAPS AROUND---

And that's the beauty of having such a bare-bones setup, for me. I can write in later additions using highlight or parenthesis:

Every highlighted section was added after the initial pass, each building on the last. (For illustration purposes only, having that much color would drive me bonkers, personally, but everybody's different!)

(I'll also have my sticky notes open in a side tab so I can copy+paste my rough outlines onto it and have it floating nearby - useful for dialogue ideas.)

Then I actually start writing! Long-form helps my stories to unravel themselves as I type, and if something changes in the long-form then it's easy to go back and edit the outline because it was so bare-bones:

For Lovers Confidant I had to have a calendar with all the important dates in it since the game is sort of rigid when it comes to that, so I also had a segment for that.

Here's my calendar for REUnion, actually, since it has so many moving pieces behind-the-scenes:

(It's then followed by a ton of notes and links to wikis and whatnot bc I'm going hard on it.......)

And then it's just editing, editing, EDITING all the long-form over and over again, re-arranging and copy+pasting sentences/paragraphs that don't work into a side document. This is when you can wrench out anything that's slow or not hitting how you want (if it didn't trip you up while writing in the first place).

I also swear by HEADERS!!!!!! They allow your document in Word to make each chapter collapsable and you can easily re-arrange them by just dragging them around on the side pane:

I can make a tutorial if you're interested in that, it's a Microsoft Office thing I picked up at Business College(TM) so idk how many people actually use it. It probably carries over into other word processing programs too.

But honestly? For me it's about jumping into the writing process as quickly as possible. I know I'll psych myself out of writing, or find something to distract me, etc if I don't just fucking write.

The longest fic I've published is only like...30k? But having chapters written down long-form is still more motivating than staring down an idea that could be 130k and just having a few sentences written.

AND ANOTHER THING!

While I'd like for some of my writings to be 50k+ eventually, it's more important to me to have the idea take all the time and space it needs. If that ends up being 800 words? It's 800 words. If it ends up being a oneshot that needs to be broken up into chapters to make it make sense to my readers? Then that's what it needs! I don't know if I'll ever be a writer with 100k+ fics and multiple-work rewritings of entire book series...But dangit my ideas are going to be written to the most authentic they can be. Only I can write my ideas, only I can craft these stories that dance around my head.

And that's fine!! I'm not a huge name in fandoms, I don't have millions of words under my publishing belt... But I'm me, and I'm happy with that. :)

(And yes all my writings are in Bookman Old Style, it helps the ideas flow. If you're ever stuck, try switching fonts. I've heard Comic Sans is useful for some people, while others swear by Helvetica. :) )

Like how do you a cohesive and compelling story without it getting boring, how do you write cool plot twists and character motivations that lead up to a defining moment, how do you write things that happen early in the story and then come back later etc etc BASICALLY. HOW DO YOU WRITE. IS WHAT IM ASKING
