i mean, i would contest some of this analysis, because there's also the fact that the films do in fact handle Tony's problem as being heart-exclusive. it should affect his lung capacity, logically, but textually it doesn't.

and he declared at the end of IM3 that he Fixed It For Good, in a little narrated science montage that framed not having gotten around to fixing his disability before this as a matter of lacking the correct form of motivation, self-respect, and clarity of purpose--as, in fact, a result of character flaws he was now triumphing over.

tony's cure was presented as a moral victory in the battle of man-against-self. he's rewarded for his strength of will and brilliance by being freed from his disability.

so the parts of the fandom that engage with the idea that tony stark has a disability that extends in scope beyond 'dependent for heart function on giant epic pacemaker that also powers his supersuit' and in time past 'Iron Man III' are the parts of the fandom that are motivated to actively read interesting human frailties into the character, even against the text. very normal fandom activity! no shade!

this is also true to a considerable extent of the people willing to engage with steve rogers as someone experienced with human frailty. it was an explicit, thematically centered part of the text in the first Captain America film, but marvel hasn't actively acknowledged it since, so you have to care about his character to read it as still relevant.

i definitely noticed back when i was still reading MCU fic that tony-centric stories quite routinely characterized steve without any acknowledgement that he hadn't always been exactly what he looks like in Avengers (2012), to a sometimes comical degree, because that was the text the fic writers were engaging with and they had no motive to engage with cap any deeper.

the thing is that i, personally, find people interested in expanding further on tony stark's human frailties tend to be really insufferable about it.

because the iron man films traffic in a moral logic where suffering somehow pays off harmful behavior. like if Tony gets tazed by SHIELD Agents this means he's been 'punished' for his 'childish' lashing-out and destructive reactions to his impending mortality, which then closes the book on those actions and relegates them to the past, paid down like bills and therefore irrelevant, in some elaborate system of balances where at the end if you get a positive sum due to stacking up enough moral tax write-offs you have Won at Good Guy.

since this is the logic of the films, it gets extended into the fandom a lot, and i find it a toxic and distressing moral framework to begin with and absolutely heinous as a way to approach disability.

like honestly i've seen the idea of tony's hypothetical physical disability as well as his actual textual one leveraged to raise his whump score and thereby forcibly render him more sympathetic so many times i am exhausted at the thought of engaging with the idea even in purest good faith, because at this point i expect it to be used for emotional manipulation.

meanwhile the people interested in Steve's history of disability can be absolutely precious about it, and the ones getting in shoving competitions with Iron Man fans can be terribly smug, but quite a lot of the time outside that they're just examining it, and its impact on his character, and its historical context, rather than trying to Win anything.

it's allowed to just exist. so i prefer that by a lot.

What would be interesting is taking the way neither of them ever want to deal with their own damage, and the deep shame they both attach to weakness, and like. Looking at how that relates to disability issues in the larger world, and how many things haven't really changed.

Something something Steve Roger's was disabled and became able-bodied, Tony Stark was able-bodied and became disabled, the processes that led to those changes were intimately connected to their becoming heroes and just as connected to their respective treatments by fandom

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR INFINITY WAR

So, I saw Infinity War last night, and it was fucking a m a z i n g

-SPOILERS AHEAD, SO BEWARE-  -SPOILERS AHEAD, SO BEWARE-

My thoughts on a few things and some of my favorite parts:

- Not even 10 minutes into the movie. Loki, man. What the fuck. 

- The dynamic between Tony and Strange was hilarious, but also really interesting. I really, REALLY hope that Strange’s death isn’t permanent, and in the future, we get to see more of them together, because their intelligence together would do great things.

- Peter is so adorable. Him and the pop culture references were so cute and funny

- Quill making his voice sound deeper in front of Thor. Priceless.

- Thor and Rocket having a weird, but sad heart-to-heart. Thor’s “What more could I lose?” hurt, but Rocket saying under his breath “I have a lot to lose” hurt even more. Rocket, though he doesn’t want to admit it, loves his team, and considers them his family.

- STEVE ROGERS WITH THAT BEARD, THO. MMMMMMHMMM

- The bubble gun

- It was pretty dope seeing Red Skull on Vormir as the keeper of the soul stone.

- Thanos shedding tears as he realizes he has to kill Gamora made me tear up a bit. It was...odd, seeing Thanos, of all people, cry, but proved that regardless of everything that happened, he actually loved Gamora like a daughter, and it was devastating to see her try to fight him off when he grabbed her.

- “I have a better question. Why is Gamora?”

- Bruce and Natasha finally seeing each other after years.

- According to Doctor Strange, out of 14,000,506 outcomes, they only win one. That has to come into play somehow in the second part. Maybe. The time stone is probably going to play a big role, too, somehow.

- I’m sure others have thought the same thing, and probably explained why it wouldn’t have worked, but I’ll still mention it. When Doctor Strange, Spiderman, Iron Man, the the remaining guardians were holding Thanos down to get the gantlet off, couldn’t Strange have made a portal ring and cut Thanos whole hand off, instead of trying to pry it off? Not only would they have portaled it away from Thanos, but they probably could have escaped at the same time. Idk  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

- Fucking Quill. I know that he was mad. I get that he was furious that Gamora was dead. It was an emotional response. I get it it. But don’t sit there and tell me he didn’t fuck up by punching Thanos.

- Thor literally withstanding the power of a star.

- Groot finally snapping out of his game to help Thor by making the handle, and pretty much saved his life in the process.

- I’m sorry, but I’m gonna say it. I really didn’t care much for Scarlet Witch or Vision. They’re not bad characters, but I just couldn’t get myself to actually give a shit about their romance. I was more upset at the fact that Thanos was able to get the mind stone from Vision then Vision’s death itself. It was still sad, though.

- Bucky and Steve hugging  👌 👌 👌

- The whole fight scene in Wakanda was EPIC AS FUCK.

- Strange giving Thanos the time stone so he would spare Tony. FFFFFF ;o;

- Rocket and Bucky shooting enemies together.  👌

- Thanos getting all six stones, and snapping his fingers, literally burning the gantlet out.

- When people started disintegrating, the entire theater gave a collective gasp and multiple “what the fuck?” could be heard, including one from both my mom and I.

- Bucky’s confused “Steve?” as he disintegrated in front of Steve, forcing Steve to helplessly watch as he died for a second time.

- T’Challa trying to help Okoye up by telling her she can’t die like that, and disintegrates in front of her, causing her to fail her duty of protecting the king.

- Sam disintegrating and James calling out for him, not knowing he was gone. 

- Groot disintegrating in front of Rocket, and Rocket helplessly saying “No, no, no, no” as he can’t do anything to stop it.

- The remaining guardians, minus Rocket, disintegrating, leaving Rocket as the sole remaining guardian, and ultimately leaving him alone, as his entire team/family is dead.

- “Mr. Stark, I don’t feel so good.”

- TONY HOLDING PETER AND SAYING IT WAS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT AND COMFORTING HIM IN PETER’S FINAL MOMENTS BEFORE DISINTEGRATING. I LOST IT RIGHT HERE. I CRIED. And what hurts even more is knowing that even if Peter had listened to Tony and stood behind, PETER STILL WOULD HAVE DIED.

- Strange telling Tony it was bound to happen this way before disintegrating.

- Literally Thanos can eat an entire ass

Oof, that was longer than expected, but in all, it was fantastic movie. For a two and half hour film, I can honestly say there wasn’t a single moment that didn’t have my full attention. I’d say a solid 9/10, only because my bOY SPIDEY DIED FUUUUUUUCK

I saw Endgame today, here are my assorted thoughts in no particular order c:

He goes back and returns the stones and then tries some of that life Tony told him to get BUT DIDN'T INVOLVE BUCKY IN THAT LIFE?? HE KNEW HIS BEST FRIEND WAS BEING FUCKING TORTURED BY FUCKING HYDRA AND INSTEAD HE WENT BACK AND JUST FUCKING DANCED WITH PEGGY AND LEFT BUCKY TO HIS FATE???

And he "got a life" in the first place but decided to get it with this one girl he spent maybe a year with instead of his literal best friend for life???? Peggy had her own life after Steve died and he decided to just fucking go back and take that from her??? You know had fucking PISSED THAT would make peggy??? She wouldn't accept him back and just go with it and be the happy little housewife are you fucking kidding me??? She’d kick his ass back to the future!!!

What about the other steve in that universe? U telling me he’d be a-okay with some fucking doppelganger stealing Peggy Carter from him??? Uh hell no!! He’d kick ass!! 

How does Steve staying in that timeline with Peggy NOT MESS UP the entire timeline which is what the sorceress warned against?????? If Peggy doesn’t start SHIELD in honor of Steve then how does ANYTHING in their universe get done?? Who finds Steve in the ice???? I mean come on!!!

Side note, Steve had the shield to give to Sam. The intact shield. Which when Steve went into the past was in the ice. HE WENT INTO THE ICE TO GET IT??? DID HE WAKE HIMSELF UP??? WHAT HAPPENED THERE!!! DID HE GET INTO A THREESOME RELATIONSHIP WITH PEGGY AND HIMSELF??? I HAVE TO KNOW!

How dare they try to paint the place that Steve had created for himself in the future and the family he made there LESS THAN Peggy fucking Carter who HAD HER OWN LIFE AFTER STEVE DIED!!! YOU TELLING ME THAT WOMAN COULDN’T HANDLE THE GRIEF OF THAT ONE MAN COME THE FUCK ON! THEY ACT LIKE SHE COULDN’T GET ON WITHOUT HIM AND HE JUST FUCKING HAD TO GO BACK FOR HER. BULL. SHIT

look, i get it. steve, tony and thor are great characters and lowkey carry the franchise but come on. they are NOT the only heavy hitters in the avengers cast, not even close tbh!

I get that he’s like still recovering and shit but come on, there’s no way either of them would really be ok with the other going off on a mission alone at this point. The funeral for stark was sweet but that thing is just going to float sadly in the lake for days until someone fishes it out come on.

Okay I get there was tension between stark and bucky but really u made buck stand back with the c list people instead of next to his best friend for the funeral???
