Itâs just such an amazing scene because he takes so many precautions to make sure his outfit wonât get bloody and then 90% of the blood ends up on his face
#I really love the way the movie deals with like. Patrickâs perception of himself vs the worldâs perception of him#because to him heâs like. âI am an exceedingly strange and twisted man. however no one knows my dark secret because of my genius front.â#âit is my burden to be well liked and respected by those around me. and my guard must be up at all times. lest my mask slip for a secondâ#meanwhile most of the people who know him find him off putting or unusual and really he is not nearly as slick as he thinks he is.#he has such a fixation on the wrong parts of his social mask that he is totally blind to his actual failures in that area#I think this scene is very emblematic of that#the way his brain works in that regard I mean. hence the bloody face.#zoeposting#Bateman

book-thief â james potter
pairing: james potter x female!reader
prompt: reader and james fight over the last book on the shelf.
please refrain from plagiarizing my work. requests are always open!
[Y/N]'s arm stills in mid-air, hovering over the spine of the lone textbook as she makes eye contact with a familiar-looking boy whose hand is similarly outstretched towards the same book: Advanced Potion-Making by Libatius Borage. It's the only one left on the shelf.
"Um," she says, pursing her lips as she grabs the book before he can even think about breaking eye contact. "Sorry. I got here first."
Diagon Alley is especially busy during this time of the year, less than a week before Hogwarts is set to reopen its doors to welcome a brand new set of first years and resume learning for the rest of the older students. Every single shop [Y/N] has gone into so far has been bustling with witches and wizards going about their shopping businessâincluding Flourish and Blotts.
The bookshop's usually stocked shelves are almost empty. Most of the textbooks for [Y/N]'s year have gone completely sold out; according to the very frazzled manager, there had been an issue with the publishing house, hence they were short a good hundred textbooks or so for each subject. This meant that at least a hundred Hogwarts students were going to have to use a secondhand textbook or two during the school year.
And [Y/N] is not going to be one of them.
Feeling only a tiny bit guilty, she tucks the textbook under her arm, offers the strangely familiar-looking boy a half-assed apologetic smile, and resumes her shopping for textbooks. Weaving through the crowd of customers without even having to look up from the piece of parchment she clutches in her hands, she surveys her shopping list:
The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 6 by Miranda Goshawk Advanced Potion-Making by Libatius Borage Confronting the Faceless A Guide to Advanced Transfiguration by Emeric Switch Flesh-Eating Trees of the World Advanced Rune Translation by Yuri Blishen
Two textbooks left to go. So far she's been lucky enough to get most of them without much trouble despite the shortage of books (unless she counts the awkward encounter with that boy back there). She mutters occasional "excuse me"s as she slinks past other customers on her way to the Herbology section of the bookshop in search of Flesh-Eating Trees of the World.
There are only three other people in the Herbology aisleâan old witch mumbling something to herself about leaping toadstools, a little witch no more than age five surveying a book titled "Devil's Snare and Its Devilish Secrets", andâ
It's the same strangely familiar boy from before. The one [Y/N] stole very reasonably took the last copy of Advanced Potion-Making from. (She had gotten there first.) But he's standing all the way at the end of the aisle, and she's standing on the opposite end.
Judging by the fact that he seems to be her age and goes to Hogwarts (which would explain that sense of vague recognition she gets when she look at him), he's here for the same book that she is.
It's more of an assumption than anything, but her legs kick into action nonetheless and she starts speed-walking towards the shelf that holds Flesh-Eating Trees of the World. But the boy seems to have the same incentive as she does, and at a pace much quicker than hers courtesy of his annoyingly long legs, he reaches the shelf first.
Her entire world seems to slow down. Before she knows it, she's standing two feet away from himâand he has the last copy of Flesh-Eating Trees of the World clutched in his hands.
"Sorry," the boy says with a flicker of mischief in his tone, smiling smugly as he holds up the book in a manner one can only describe as ostentatious. "I got here first."
She blinks, watching as he nods at her before turning and disappearing into a different aisle.
Greatânow she has to use an old Herbology book this year and hope that she doesn't get one that's been thrown up on or jinxed to bite her hands every time she opens it.
She scoffs to herself, shaking her head in disbelief as she looks around in search of someone to share her incredulity with, maybe say "Did you hear that? Absolutely unbelievable" as a means of ranting. But the old lady and the five-year-old witch are hardly fit for such conversation, so instead [Y/N] huffs to herself and goes to look for her last textbook.
She walks faster than usual on her way to the Ancient Runes aisle, still reeling a little bit from the ridiculous situation that had just unfolded moments before and cost her her Herbology book. When she catches sight of the shelf she's supposed to find Advanced Rune Translation in, much to her delight, there is only one book left on the shelf. Hers.
But when she makes a move towards it, a certain someone rushes past her. It's that boy again.
Oh no, he's notâ
His outstretched arm reaches out for the last copy of Advanced Rune Translation, and her instincts kick inâshe grabs the book before he can, but he has latched onto it too.
Eyebrows furrowing, she tugs the book towards her. He tugs it back to him.
"I'm sorry," she says, keeping her voice level as she stares up at him, forcing a friendly smile. "I need this book."
His nose wrinkles before he smiles back at herâthat same look of obviously insincere friendliness. "Sorry," he replies, lips curling, "I need it too," he tugs the book in his direction.
With gritted teeth, she grips onto her side of the book persistently. "I need it more," she insists, the smile on her face slowly fading.
"I don't see how you can be the judge of that," he fumes, his smile drooping into a scowl.
"I got here firstâ"
"No, you did notâ"
The both of them have completely dropped all pretense of friendliness, now full-on scowling at each other as they stubbornly engage in an intense tugging match for Advanced Rune Translation.
"Fine!" she exclaims, letting go of the book as she takes a step back, frustration bubbling in her chest. "Fine. Merlin. Have it, then, if you want it so bloody badly."
The boy grins in triumph, looking much too pleased with himself. "Correction: I needed it."
"Yeah, whatever," she grumbles, glowering at him. And then, in a much lower tone, "Prat."
The smirk on his face drops. "Excuse me?"
"Hm?" she hums, glancing at him innocently. "Oh, nothing. You have a good day."
Spinning on her heel, she makes her way to the cashier, still seething as she dumps her very incomplete set of books on the counter. What a prat.
â
[Y/N] steps out of Flourish and Blotts onto the busy street of Diagon Alley. A bell chimes as the door to the bookshop closes behind her, but the sound is lost amidst the sounds of conversation coming from busy shoppers passing by.
Sighing, she purses her lips and checks her school supply list. She has everythingâeverything but two particular books that were unjustly stolen from her by a strangely familiar pain in the arseâ
Okay, you know what? What she needs right now is to cool downâand what better way to do that than to get ice cream?
A few minutes later, she finds herself in Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour, sitting on a little table lined along the windows with a triple chocolate ice cream cone clutched in her hands. She tries not to look too sulky, but memories of that boy from the bookshop linger in her head that have her feeling irritated.
She's been staring out of the large glass windows for quite some time that her eyes have gone out of focus, so it takes her brain a while to register the fact that there's a boy standing right in front of the window, looking straight at her.
But it's not just a boyâno, this is the boy. The prat, [Y/N] has decided to call him inside her head.
She glares back at him. Annoyingly enough, he grins at her and raises his hand in a wave. What he does next has her gripping her ice cream cone so hard she's surprised it doesn't break, because the prat pulls out a book from his bag and waves it at her.
Written along the cover of the book are the words "Advanced Rune Translation".
Before [Y/N] can raise her hand and give him the middle finger, he averts his gaze and walks right into Florean Fortescue's.
She watches as he strides to her table before plopping down into the seat opposite her, setting the textbook down on the table. Her eyes flit to it before she looks up at him. If looks could kill, the prat would already be in the afterlife.
"Can I help you?" she asks, not bothering to hide the scorn in her tone. But just because she doesn't want to give him the satisfaction, she puts on a forced, sarcastic smile.
The prat grins. He crosses his arms, and whilst leaning forward in his seat, asks, "I suppose you go to Hogwarts?"
She regards him with a deathly stare. "Yes," she says, and then slowly, she repeats, "Can I help you?"
He ignores her question. "What house?"
Scoffing, she replies, "Ravenclaw."
"Aw, I was hoping you were in Gryffindorâbut that wouldn't make sense because I'd be friends with you by now if you were."
She gives him an unimpressed glance. "Sure. Friends."
He raises his eyebrows, the impish grin on his face widening. In a flirtatious tone, he asks, "Were you hoping to be something more than friends?"
Her eyes widen and she scoffs again in disbelief. "Oh, Merlin," she says, shaking her head as she forces out a few breathless laughs out of frustration. "You are something else. Really."
The prat grins and leans back on his chair. "I'm James Potter. And you are?"
"Very annoyed," she takes an angry bite out of her ice cream cone.
Amused, he slides the book towards her on the table. "Because of this?"
"Because of a certain prat, to be more specific," she takes another bite of cone, chewing much too fast out of anger as she glares at him. "His name's James Potterâyou might have heard of him."
The pratâJames Potterâlaughs. Actually laughs; a genuine sound of amusement. A look of feigned wonder comes across his face as he strokes his chin. "Why, yes, the name does seem familiar. Mind describing him for me?"
She rolls her eyes, but for some reason, she plays along. "He's tall. Looks like a tree."
"Interesting comparison."
"Black hair that strongly resembles a bird's nestâwow, he really does look like a tree."
He scoffs.
A tiny smirk tugs at the edges of her lips as she keeps going. "He's in Gryffindor, too, so that explains why he's such a prat."
He clutches his chest as though in pain. "Ouch."
"Oh, and I almost forgot. Silly me," she simpers, and then fixes him with a stony gaze. "He stole two of my textbooks."
James lets out an incredulous laugh. "Stole?" he repeats, shaking his head. "I got to the Herbology book first; it's only right that I took it. As for this oneâ" he taps the textbook on the table, "Technically, you gave this up."
She presses her lips together. "Whatever helps you sleep at night."
He stares at her for a moment, mouth open as though to say something and his brows furrowed, and then he shakes his head and lets out a long breath. "You're lucky I find you pretty."
She narrows her eyes at him, ignoring the oneâjust oneâbutterfly that has been let loose inside her stomach at being called pretty by an annoying book-thief that a tiny, tiny part of her finds mildly attractive. Because he is a bit of a lookerâshe has to admit.
James Potter taps the book on the table and grins at her. "What if I decide to give this to you?"
"Bless your kind soul."
He laughs again. "Noâreally. What do I get in return?"
[Y/N] stares at him, trying to figure out whether he's being serious or not. Her lips bunch up to one side as she ponders her response.
"A name, perhaps?" James suggests, his eyes glinting.
She raises her eyebrows at him. "You want to trade a book for my name?"
He shrugs, drumming his fingers on the book cover. "Maybe. Yes."
"A book that you paid money for?" [Y/N] asks dubiously.
His bottom lip juts out as he contemplates his answer. Then he shrugs again, nodding. "Yes."
"Then you should've asked earlier!" she exclaims, sitting up straight and holding your hand out. "I'm [Y/F/N]."
James Potter lets out an amused sound, feeling something akin to fondness pluck at his heartstrings. He mimics the way she sat up straight, although his version is a little exaggeratedâhe quickly sits up, back rigid like a soldier being called to attention in a clear attempt to mock her. She gives the pratâJamesâa warning look; he grins at her.
"Pleasure to make your acquaintance, [Y/N]," he grips her hand firmly in his and gives it a shake.
Her lips tugging up involuntarily, she replies, "And yours."
Both of them drop their hands back to their sides at the same time as though afraid to hang on for longer than necessary. "So I suppose this is mine now?" she says, reaching out for the textbook.
James sighs heavily, shoulders slumping as he stares at the book with a dramatic, longing gaze. "I suppose so."
Hands hovering over the cover, she looks at him for confirmation. "You sure?"
He wipes a fake tear from his eye and nods. Rolling her eyes, she tries to hold back a laugh. "Alright. Okay. Um," she slides the book slowly towards her as if waiting for him to change his mind, but he doesn't. "Thanks.. um.. James."
He drops his dramatic act of despair and beams at her, crossing his arms as he props his elbows on the table. "You're very welcome, [Y/N]. Like I saidâyou're lucky I find you pretty."
She rolls her eyes, ignoring the warmth spreading across her cheeks. "Quite the flirt, aren't you?"
James shrugs. "Just being honest."
She gapes at him, at a momentary loss for words. And then she looks away, cheek twitching with a threat of a smile as she lets out a heavy exhale. "You really are something else," she mutters.
"Only for you, love," James grins. His eyes dart to the watch on his wrist, and his grin falters as he glances back up at her. "As much as I want to sit here and stare at you all dayâ"
"Annoy me, you mean."
James continues on smoothly like he hadn't heard her. "Unfortunately, I've got to go. I promised a friend I'd meet with him somewhereâhis name's Remus, I'll introduce the both of you someday but hopefully he doesn't fawn over you too much. You've got the brains and the looks, after all."
She flicks her eyebrows up at him.
"Alright, well," James huffs, getting up from his seat. "I've really got to goâI'm already ten minutes late. I'll see you around Hogwarts, [Y/N]. Oh, and your ice cream's meltingâI thought you ought to know."
With one final wink, James Potter backs away, keeping his gaze fixed on her as he goes. Just before he leaves the ice cream parlor, he gives her a mock curtsy, smiling, and then disappears into the crowd of people outside.
Feeling oddly breathless, [Y/N] blinks herself out of her reverie and then looks down at her ice cream. James was rightâit is melting.
Couldn't he have said that earlier?
With a strange little smile on her face, [Y/N] finishes up the rest of her ice cream. And when she leaves Florean Fortescue's Ice Cream Parlour a few minutes later, there's a bounce in her step and a weird, fluttery feeling in her chest.

Fruits Basket, Se03. ep 6.(Part 1)
The main female protagonist who, has been the âmother /psychiatrist/ fixer/curse-breakerâ for 57 eps & 2 seasons, has finally had her own âIâm a real person with my own issuesâ ep !!!! YESS! So happy!!! also, so underwhelmed. Tohru has been painted to be this utterly selfless & altruistic character for long, that when sheâs finally a balanced character itâs presented in half an episode? Donât get me wrong, I like the ep, but thereâs also the same feeling of bullet train that I felt in momijiâs ep! ugh!! I hated that feeling! Go away~ oh well.. Iâll quickly state what I didnât like, before jumping into what I liked, in order to end with a happier note~
What I didnât like:
Tohruâs monologue after leaving shigure & Isuzu felt more like a background exposition more than a true characterâs thoughts. The reason is that It is quickly narrated with quick flashbacks from the past with intentional pieces missing from the flashback. Pieces likeâ how did Kyoko hurt tohru? She said to kyo, in se02, ep â I feel like Iâve only caused her sadnessâ &Â tohruâs flashbacks in se02 of her mother leaving/ closing a door. All these things not included in tohruâs 1st ever personal monologue made it seem like quick fill in for the audience more than tohruâs main struggle. Compare it to Yukiâs 3 ep monologue in se02, filled with all his own background info, hence, we as audience sit back & just feel. With tohru a little brain work is needed of putting things together in the puzzle is needed because NOTHING abt her trauma has ever been explained to us prior to her monologue . Also, compare this kyo. A character who ONLY have 2 eps dedicated to him in 57 eps, yet even without monologues & with hidden secrets for climax purposes, his emotions are clear cuz his background was explained early in se01, ep24 & se02, ep9. Compared to them both, her monologue felt a bit lacking.
Whatâs up with the following scene? Her crying & kyo comforting her mid-street. He saw her crying, asked whatâs wrong & she couldnât say & he gave her a comforting advice. All good. Kyo always give the most needed advice for tohru to be herself & feel comforted. Se01, âcomplain more, be selfishâ Se02, somen table scene & asking her abt her future plans & the hiro incident. Kyo has tried to guess whats wrong first. Here he saw her cry in the middle of the street & just gave her an advice? couldnât he at least guess wrongly if it is her granpa? school? anything? This scene is AMAZING but it feels off a little.
Kyoâs â now I rememberâ EXCUSE ME?????? se01, ep14, valentine ep, he got a nightmare, then when shigure talked to him, we saw a quick flashback that we didnât now what it is but now it IS kyoko. se02, the entirety of ep9 & the â I wonât forgive youâ & the flashback of young him with kyoko talking abt tohru. se02, ep 22 his fight with yuki & the clear face of kyoko telling him abt something regarding the hat. His entire shutdown of tohru IS abt kyoko NOT abt him being a monster cuz tohru accepted monster kyo in se01 ep 24! so.. REMEMBER WHAT????? the accident?? I feel like being hit with a rock. I mean, it makes sense that kyo will get PTSD after seeing the hat, cuz he remembers the bloody accident vividly. But it is the dialogue that IS weird. â I rememberâ ?? it makes no sense? unless it is another hidden secret & will be revealed later. If so, then forget this point.
Kagura (more on her below). Now, letâs talk abt what I liked!
-Grief (the most difficult theme to express in literature): Excellent writing!
Grief is one of the most diverse human emotions. ppl who grief a loved one either erase everything abt them in order to cope with the pain of loss & live on, or drastically engrave everything, not want any memory to slip away, or hold the deceased on a pedestal, or hate them irrationally in order to forget abt them, some deny that the loved one is gone, others talk to them daily, some act & live normally for years & suddenly it hits them that this loved person is truly gone & they breakdown. Others, direct their disbelief of losing a precious one into the envy that other bad ppl are still living, why my precious one is dead?. Thats why, it is a difficulty emotion to understand by others. Ppl watching you will always think that comforting you is enough & that the longer you take, the more impatient they are with you. Tell me, watching tohru this ep, didnât you feel that:
Come on. tohru, you can love your mom & kyo! who says only ONE person can be your precious?
Umm, why she cries for her mom NOW? 2 years after her death? Is she over it already?
Tohru~~ your mom aint going no where cuz you loved a guy? sheâs in your heart, girl. Ugh!
Compared to yuki who was abused by his parents & kyo whose mom commit suicide in front of him, tohruâs trauma is meh~
Feeling this way abt tohru is exactly how many feel abt ppl struggling with grief. You are NOT a bad person if you felt this way. It means that thankfully you werenât struck by grief to tohruâs extent or that your grief went about differently than tohru. Grief is a crippling feeling. It is valid, strong, overwhelming, paralyzing & above all very unique to the person themselves. Tohru feeling that her mom is slipping away from her memory is so realistic & utterly heartbreaking. Grief hurts & moving on from grief hurts more!!!! The more you go on & live your life, the more you feel like you betray your loved one.
Tohruâs entire existence is for her mother & so her mother LIVES inside her:
Finishing high school cuz itâs her motherâs request.
Getting a job to sustain herself cuz she has no one to support her financially.
Giving her momâs wisdom & teachings abt life to others.
imitating her dadâs speaking style to prevent her mom from âleavingâ.
Being the perfect girl in order to portray that her mom, who is a gangster & is hinted by the ugly relatives to be unfaithful to her husband due to tohru not taking after her dad, actually raised a respectful girl!
Talking to a dead cold lifeless picture as if it is a living human being & going into panic attacks when she looses such pictures.
Suppressing all her true â ugly, negativeâ emotions & only giving the fake smiles & positive attitude.
She fears that ppl will leave her if she isnât âcomforting, happyâ, hence, the whole facade of â iâm okay, Iâm okayâ.
Immersing her self in pplâs issues so she wonât face her own feelings of utter loneliness, fear of the future, & being left behind when everybody moves on with their lives.
Thinking that having selfish desires contradicts the â hopeful, kindâ girl images, hence, the fear to actually wants sth for herself. Everything HAS TO BE for the sake of the others.
Tohru is deeply traumatized & her complex, unhealthy but extremely realistic attachment to her mom must be broken. Tohru must learn to LET GO.
-Kaguraâs characterâs assassination. aka (violence heals yâall!)
The show wanted to express the emotion that kagura is still in love with kyo, but is learning to let go & accepting kyo/tohru love. I love that. Her speech with kazuma abt not being able to face tohru cuz her face will show her emotions is so relatable & it hit ME personally. Loved that. Then, she learns that tohru truly loves kyo & should confess to him not talk to Isuzu & I get that, it make sense that she lashes on thru & teach her the value of being open abt your feelings & dont loose him. all cool & understandable. BUT:
How dare you slap tohru like that? you donât know what sheâs going through? tohru is wearing funeral clothes for Godâs sake! she just visited her dead mom, you insensitive woman! How dare you assume that all tohru is struggling with is love love, romance romance yay~ confess, kiss, be happy?
Tohru & kyoâs issues are deeper than typical, normal, shallow shojo love. It is related to child trauma & abuse. To their own individual identity & self-image! Their romantic love is meant to guide them towards better choices for the future, not magically heal everything. Their mutual love is NOT the answer to their issues.
How dare you slap someone to make them go back to their senses? this is such an anime move! ugh!~ it cheapens the emotional weight of characterâs emotions.
â Iâm not apologizing to tohru. We communicate thro fistsâ excuse me? you arent even communicating with kyo thro fists! he sees you & run! the only time he thanked you for, was when you didnât â communicate thro fistsâ & played with him as a child! Not only make her hit tohru but not apologize??
No one told her off? are you foreal?? Isuzu pouting lips is no match for Isuzu powerful emotions when sheâs embarrassed, & kazuma! where you at? Happy at the â open confrontationâ? Why do you kill kaguraâs character like that?
Side Notes:
I hate how this went by in half an ep like they did with machi!! tohru is THE main character for Godâs sake! But it looks like the show is not so fond of the true tohru who wants stuff & screams & talks to herself, alas she isnât the angelic, innocent girl that is saturating the heck out of all shojo amines. Oh well~ perhaps tohruâs issues will be visited again in the finale?
Kyo gets PTSD reaction in front of tohru. great. Now whatâs next? I wonât ever forgive the anime if next ep, kyo & tohru are all normal or worse the episodic theme prevents the continuation & jumps elsewhere. Nearly all the eps that didnât end with a happy note, started the next ep somewhere & totally forgot the cliff hanger. such as, Isuzuâs ep in se02, it ended with tohruâs nightmare & next ep started yukiâs issues with tohru all smiley & bright. Another example, the Cinderella play ended with kyo/tohru torn symbolism where each is awkward with the other, next ep machi !!!!!! & kyo/ tohru all normal in kazumaâs house. But this time, it will be an epic mistake to do the same. Kyo going full traumatic in front of tohru to the point of her screaming is not sth you skip & start over erasing. Donât disappoint me show! you canât screw that, can you?
I love the symbolism of kyoko disappearing from the picture & the crack of her framed pic at the end with it still continued in he ED. Good job.
They are building for a hug clashing scene between kyo & tohtu. it must hurt. It is designed to hurt. I wanted it to hurt. It is not abt romance. It is abt mental & emotional trauma. Iâm excited. But Iâm scared. After todayâs ep, I can confidently say I donât trust the director. Iâm an anime-only, but tohruâs part in the story is the least touched upon, the quickest to get over with & has the wackiest animation. They just donât know how to depict an emotional tohru~ sigh~
Tohru is written to be a unique protagonist in the sea of innocent, selfless & always happy shojo heroine & opposed to the badass, physically strong female protag in shonen. She is the most realistic, but so much of her potential is wasted so far~~
â saving the sohmaâs. breaking the curse for others is a lie, in reality I wanted to do it for kyoâ This line is supposed to be liberating for tohru cuz for once she is putting herself FIRST! It is not abt kyo. It is abt herself! it is cuz SHE wants him. See the difference? See how this line gives tohru the biggest character development!! but still sth is missing. I duno..
I have lots to say abt tohru, kyo, shigure, the grandpa, kyoko, Isuzu & even kazuma! Iâll do that in part 2.
I still liked the ep tho. It is solid. Iâll like it MORE if they continued from here & didnât cut it cold.

Chapter 11: MemoriesÂ
Killian - December 2019
What do you think if we include a current hit in the poll to choose our song for the duet next Saturday? - ES
Emma's message was the first thing Killian saw when he woke up that Sunday morning. He was laying in bed, his mind still dragging from the vestiges of sleep, so he had to read the contents of the text a couple of times until he was able to understand its meaning. Or rather, understand the only thing that mattered to him at that moment. Emma was still planning to sing with him next Saturday.
He was tempted to send a reply including that topic, but in the end, he opted for a less risky approach.
Hi, love. I see no problem with it. I guess you've already thought about a specific song - KJ
Yeah, what do you think about Memories? - ES
After reading the message, he sat up abruptly, dropping the phone in the process. Bloody hell... Memories? Seriously? What the hell was Emma playing at? Was it a way to mess with him? Or her way of telling him that she also remembered? Or was it just a damn coincidence?
A deep breath escaped between his lips as he grabbed the phone again, leaning his back against the headboard of the bed, his fingers sliding across the screen while he debated whether to call her directly and question her or, on the contrary, continue getting the lay of the land. He was about to press the call button, he really was, but in the end, he decided on a simple message. He was nothing but a coward, after all, afraid of what Emma would tell him.
Memories? The one by Maroon 5? - KJ
Yeah, I think it could work since that weekend will be the last of the year. It has a certain festive spirit, with those toast references. - ES
Aye, you got a point, but what do you think if we discuss it later at the bar? We can meet there a little earlier to talk. - KJ
Killian held his breath as he watched as the dots on the screen appeared and disappeared intermittently as if she couldn't decide what to type as a reply. When her new message finally arrived, he couldn't help feeling a pang of disappointment.
That won't be possible. I've already talked to Liam about that. I've got an issue to deal together with Elsa so I will arrive later today. - ES
She was lying, which only increased Killian's confusion. Still, he was now sure that the use of that particular song had been deliberate, although he hadn't yet caught the real reason. He had no choice but to continue playing along and see where all this mess was going.
Okay then. I have no problem including Memories in the poll. - KJ
Great. I'm sending you the rest of the candidate songs and as soon as you give me the approval I will upload it to the website. - ES
You don't need to send them to me, Swan. I trust your ability to choose. I will take a look at the website later. And maybe Iâll even vote ;) - KJ
The conversation looked too professional, even distant, so he made an attempt to approach Emma as her friend instead of her coworker, hence the inclusion of the emoji. It was a poor attempt, he was aware of it, but his brain seemed not to be working properly after their kiss and the remembrance of their weekend in Storybrooke. Emma didn't seem to take the bait, though.
Okay. See you later. - ES
After that last cold message, he had to suppress the urge to throw the phone against the wall, a pull of frustration firmly settled in the pit of his stomach. To make matters worse, the bloody lyrics of the song had found their way in his head and he now felt unable to get rid of those verses. A humorless laugh escaped between his lips when he realized the irony of the song.
Here's to the ones that we got Cheers to the wish you were here, but you're not 'Cause the drinks bring back all the memories Of everything we've been through
In their case, the drinks worked in the opposite way. Instead of bringing back the memories, the alcohol had taken them away. Killian shook his head as he tried to focus his thoughts on something else, anything that didn't remind him of Emma and the taste of her lips on his.
 //
Emma had definitely chosen the bloody song on purpose.
He was sure about that when he entered the website and saw the poll consisted of that song and its rivals, three insubstantial and little known songs. In fact, the poll had only been up for an hour and several people had already voted, with Memories being the one ahead by a wide margin. He didn't know whether to get excited about the prospect of singing that song with her or, on the contrary, feel annoyed because it seemed that Emma was trying to communicate with him in a language he couldn't decipher.
Hopefully, he would find a moment in the following days to talk to her.
//
Emma was avoiding him.
Killian had not only not found the opportunity to talk to her privately but he had barely seen her in the past few days.
On Sunday, she arrived quite late at The Kraken and remained busy throughout the evening. She hardly waited for them to close the bar to leave, alluding that she was tired. On Monday, he didn't even see her since the bar was closed and she excused herself indicating that she was going to take advantage of the day off to do some last-minute Christmas shopping. Today, Tuesday, The Kraken would remain open only a couple of hours, since it was Christmas Eve. Both he and Liam had organized a late Christmas dinner in their apartment, to which Emma was invited, of course, but he was no longer sure if she would bother to come.
He wasn't imagining things. Liam had also noticed that something strange was happening with Emma. He had even tried to question Killian about it since he suspected âand he wasn't wrong â that Killian had something to do with it. But Killian wasn't in the mood to explain their current situation, especially when he didn't even know what the hell was going through Emma's head.
Killian rubbed his hand over his face and hair, feeling the frustration creep over him. Although there were still a few hours left before they had to open the bar, he was tempted to go there to play the guitar and try to disconnect for a while and get rid of that bitter feeling that had settled inside him since last Saturday.
He needed distractions and it was clear that he wasn't going to find them in the solitude of his apartment. Not even Liam was here since he had gone to the grocery store to get everything they needed for dinner tonight and Elsa was accompanying him.
The corners of his lips rose slightly at the fact that at least one of the Jones brothers seemed to be on the right track to win the heart of his potential love interest. Not that Liam had confessed anything about it, but Killian had the feeling that his role as a matchmaker wasn't necessary at all. Still, he took a mental note to question his brother in that regard. In addition, he hoped that the Christmas spirit in the form of a sprig of mistletoe could finally push them together. His lips curled up again when his eyes drifted to the strategic spot where Liam intended to place the plant.
Just when he again valued the possibility of going to the bar, the sound of someone knocking on the door caught his attention. His eyebrows pinched together in confusion, since he wasn't expecting any visits. When the person on the other side of the door knocked again with a little more insistence, he hurried to open the door.
Whoever Killian was expecting, it certainly wasn't the person he found on the threshold. His eyes widened in surprise, his heart skipping a beat as he stood with his mouth hanging open, unable to react.
"Surprise!"Â
Killian blinked a couple of times and then shook his head, noting that she was still there right in front of him. That's when he finally reacted, sort of.
"Belle?"
"Well, are you going to greet me properly or are you going to remain still as if you had seen a ghost?"
A renewed energy seized him at that moment, pushing him forward, a laugh bubbling deep in his chest as he wrapped his friend in a tight hug, lifting her off the ground.
"What the hell are you doing here? We thought you couldn't make it this year!" he said, still amazed by her unexpected presence, after lowering her and loosening the hug so he could look her in the eye.
"Are you going to invite me in first, or do you prefer that we have this conversation on the threshold?" Belle replied, her lips curled into a grin, her eyes sparkling. Gods ! He had missed his friend so much.
He let out a laugh and stepped aside to let her in and then helped her take off her coat and hung it on the rack near the door while placing the travel bag she was holding in a corner of the hall.
"Does Liam know?"
"Nope." She shook her head and then she narrowed her eyes as her gaze wandered around the room. "Where is he, by the way?" Belle then turned her head in his direction, her eyes widened. "Tell me he's with Elsa."
Killian tilted his head as he frowned, giving her a skeptical look. "How the hell do you know about Liam and Elsa?"
Before answering, Belle rolled her eyes as if to imply that the answer was evident. "Isn't it obvious? Because your brother hasn't stopped talking about her lately. So there is something between those two, right? Ha! I knew it!" Belle raised a fist in triumph as her face lit up.
"Slow down, love. There's nothing official, as far as I know. For now." If Belle felt disappointed she didn't show it. On the contrary, she kept an excited expression on her face. He made a mental note of talking to Emma to inform her that they had gotten another ally. The mere thought about Emma caused his smile to weaken but he forced himself to park those thoughts for later. Belle deserved all his attention. "So tell me, what are you doing here?"
"Oh, that!" Belle paused for a moment as she bit her lower lip, a playful spark in her gaze. "Let's say we can blame Emma for my visit."
"Emma? Myâ" His voice trailed off as he looked away, feeling the tips of his ears begin to burn.
"Yes, your Emma." She smirked at him before continuing. "She contacted me because she wanted to give you both a surprise as a Christmas gift. And also as a way to apologize for her behavior the first time we met. I was really busy, but she insisted and insisted. She even offered to buy me the plane tickets. So I had no choice but to accept. Sheâs pretty persistent, that girl of yours, isn't she?"
"She's not my..." He trailed off again, uncertain about how to continue. Well, she was his everything, that's for sure, but that wasn't something he was willing to share with Belle. In response, she crossed her arms and raised an eyebrow, giving him a skeptical look: "She is quite persistent and also stubborn," he conceded and then decided to focus on Belle's other words. So if Emma had contacted her, that meant... "When did she contact you?"
"A month or so ago?" The little flame of hope faltered for a moment. Still, he tried to maintain an impassive expression. "We've been chatting these last weeks organizing the trip. The last time I talked to her was yesterday afternoon."
"Is that so?" he asked nonchalantly, trusting that his voice would not reveal his renewed level of excitement.
Belle was too perceptive, though. She tilted her head to the side as she studied him through her narrowed eyes. "Yeah, we've been in touch all this time, even this morning we've been sharing messages. She wanted to make sure everything went well."
He tried not to smile, he really tried, but his lips acted on his own, curling up. His gesture only increased the expression of suspicion on Belle's face. "Why do I have the impression that it's a big deal as to when I've talked to her? Have you gotten into a fight or something?"
"Not exactly," he admitted reluctantly. He hadn't confessed to anyone what happened with Emma, but he wondered if it would be a good idea to share it with someone as a means to lighten the burden he was carrying. Belle seemed like his best option. "She's kinda been avoiding me since Saturday."
Belle's brows furrowed as she crossed her arms over her chest. "What have you done this time, Killian?"
"What? I haven't done anything." It was true, but Belle's expression denoted that she didn't believe him. After letting out a heavy sigh, he finally confessed. "We kissed." A huge smile blossomed on her face, but he hurried to continue. "Well, technically she started the kiss. And then she freaked out. And she's been avoiding me ever since."
"Have you tried talking to her?"
Had he tried? No, not really. Maybe because, deep down, he was afraid too. He didn't even respond, the expression on his face revealing his emotions perfectly without having to express them out loud.
Belle first rolled her eyes and shook her head, but then her features softened, her gaze searching for his as she gave him an affectionate squeeze on his arm. "You have to talk to her, Killian. Whatever is going on in her head, she still has you in her mind. She was the one who started the kiss. She was the one who contacted me because she knew that my visit would make you happy. Don't you think you should take the initiative for once? Maybe that's what she is waiting for. Maybe she needs to know that you are on the same page as her."
"Aye... I... I should talk to her."
"So, what are you waiting for? Go!"
"What? Now?" Killian wasn't entirely convinced, though he wasn't sure if what was holding him back was the uncertainty about how Emma could react, or if it was the fact of leaving Belle behind when she had just arrived. Maybe both. Or maybe he was just looking for an excuse because he was a bloody coward. "I don't think it's appropriate for me to leave you here all alone. I can talk to her later."
"Oh, come on! Stop looking for excuses, Killian," she scolded him, although the expression on her face, with an amused half-smile, never disappearing from her lips, denoted she was actually excited about his current situation. "I'm not going anywhere for the next couple of days. We'll have time to catch up. Now go!"
Her bossy tone made him finally react. He approached her and planted a soft kiss on her cheek. "Thank you, love. See you later." After putting on his coat he remembered something, so he turned back to her. "About the kiss and other stuff, Liam doesn't know anything and I would prefer that he stay like that for now, until I figure things out with Emma." He preferred to clear things up with Emma without having more people involved around them.
Belle seemed to catch the hint. "My lips are sealed. I like her a lot, by the way. I'm happy for you, you deserve it." She offered him a soft smile to which he responded with a matching one before slightly bowing his head in farewell and then leaving the house. He had a mission to accomplish.
//
All the determination Killian had felt after talking to Belle went out the window the moment he found himself in front of Emma's apartment door. He felt the palms of his hands begin to sweat as his stomach tightened into knots. But he needed to have this conversation with Emma, so, after taking a deep breath, he finally knocked on the door.
His breath caught in his throat when she opened the door quickly, barely giving him time to school his features.
"What are you doing here?"
Although Emma's words were laced with a harsh tone, he knew that he had made the right decision when he observed the expression on her face, her eyes widened slightly in surprise, the flash of something resembling longing across her gaze. Killian almost smiled to himself as he checked, once again, that she was like an open book to him. No matter how she tried to hide her emotions, her deep green eyes were like a window to her soul.
"Where are your manners, Swan? Happy Christmas Eve to you too. I'm fine, thank you." He winked at her getting the desired effect, she rolled her eyes as she pressed her lips together in an attempt to curb an incipient smile. "May I come in or do you prefer to have this conversation here?"
She ignored him, although he suspected it was more a sign of the reserved pose she intended to hold. Then she stepped aside to let him in and closed the door behind them. "I'm surprised you didn't use the key."
"Well, considering that my presence here might not be welcome, I didn't want to take a chance."
"So, what are you doing here?" she repeated, crossing her arms over her chest, although this time her voice showed curiosity rather than annoyance.
She was so beautiful that morning that Killian got distracted for a moment watching her features. There was no trace of makeup on her face, her hair was in a loose braid over her right shoulder and her eyes sparkled in such a distracting way that he had to blink to force himself to look away. Big mistake, since his gaze then traveled to her lips, causing a soft hum under his skin, while his own began to tingle, craving to savor them once more. She was like a siren inflicting a spell on him that prevented him from functioning properly.
After shaking his head slightly, he looked for her gaze again before speaking. "I'd like to express my gratitude for making that surprise visit possible."
"Oh."
"Thank you so much, Emma. It means the world to me." Her cheeks acquired a soft pink hue as she averted her gaze, her bottom lip caught between her teeth. He had to suppress the urge to reach out to her.
"Well, it was nothing. I did it for myself, actually, to apologize for my poor behavior the first time. Besides, I know that, for one reason or another, you haven't been able to see each other during the holidays in recent years. I felt it was time for you to be reunited again at Christmas." She shrugged one shoulder as she gave him a timid look from underneath her eyelashes. "I'm looking forward to meeting her, by the way, and rectifying the impression she must have of me."
"The feeling is mutual. I mean, she's looking forward to meeting you too. And you shouldn't worry about that first impression, believe me. She likes you a lot. Her words," he assured her, earning a soft smile on her part. "You're still coming to dinner tonight, aren't you?"
"Sure, why wouldn't..." Her voice trailed off, the pink of her cheeks turning a more intense shade of red. "Sure, I'll be there."
This was the decisive moment, the moment he had been waiting for a long time. The moment to act. "I was wondering since you have been avoiding me these past few days."
"I haven't been avoiding you. I've been busy," she defended herself, although neither her voice nor the way she looked away were convincing.
"Come on, Swan. I'm quite perceptive. You've been avoiding me. And you and I know the reason, right?" His last words sounded in a soft cadence devoid of recrimination. The last thing he wanted was to cause her to hide again behind her protective wall.
Killian watched as a whirlwind of mixed emotions crossed her face, as if she were fighting a battle inside. He could feel the tension radiating off her, until, after what seemed like hours, the turbulent expression on her face softened slightly as she took a shuddering breath. "This..." she muttered as she waved her hand between them, "... This is too much, Killian. The kiss, the feelings, the sudden memories..."
"So you remember too."
A noise escaped from her mouth, half snort, half groan. "It seems the damn kiss acted as a trigger." She trailed off, as she bit her lower lip and averted her gaze as if doubting whether or not she should continue. "I now know we kissed before. Rather, I have the notion, not the detailed memory." The frustration was evident in her voice, which, despite the circumstances, was a good sign, wasn't it? "And then I freaked out and ran away."
âI don't know if it will help you, but I also remembered that kiss in that instant.â Before continuing, he watched as her features softened and her shoulders sank slightly, shedding part of the tension. It was as if his words had brought some kind of relief to her.
"It's quite frustrating, to be honest, the idea that we donât remember our first kiss."
Just then, the reminder of a certain poll came to his mind. "Speaking of which, I keep wondering if your unusual song choice for this week has something to do with our lost memories."
Her features twisted in a grimace before covering her face with her hands. "Shit! I'm such an idiot," she whined as she shook her head. When she finally decided to show her face again, her cheeks were flushed and she looked mortified. "I needed to know if you also remembered. It was a desperate attempt to get a reaction from you. Pretty fruitless, I must say." She looked at him in an apologetic â and quite adorable â way.
"It's a good song, Swan. Very appropriate in every way," he hurried to reassure her. "Besides, everything seems to indicate that it will be the winner. But the damn song has been repeating itself in my mind since I read your message."
"Well, you can consider it as a kind of rehearsal for this Saturday," she suggested as she raised an eyebrow in his direction, any trace of her previous embarrassment disappeared from her face. "I haven't yet decided whether I like the song or not, since the lyrics seem quite ironic, with that reference to the drinks bringing back the memories, since with us it was the opposite."
Killian wasn't at all surprised that they had had the same thought about the song. He was madly in love with her for a reason, right? Well, for several reasons actually. Still, the reference to the drinks brought an idea to his mind that, for some reason, he hadn't considered until now. But at least it could offer some explanation to what happened with their memories. "Maybe our brain blocked those memories as a kind of weird defense mechanism, using alcohol as an excuse. We might not have been prepared to face the consequences of that kiss at that time, so our mind blocked that memory or, in my case, transformed it into a kind of very pleasant dream."
Her cheeks blushed and her eyes sparkled in a special way, causing his heart to melt a little in the process. "And what makes you think that now we are prepared to face those consequences?"
"Well, love, you kissed me again. I guess that's enough indication, isn't it?"
She let out a heavy sigh, a reluctant smile blossoming on her lips. "I guess you're right."
"In addition, we can always turn what happened into something positive. Now we will always have two first kisses. The first technical one, and the first real kiss, without alcohol involved."
"If you put it that way..."
"I know you're afraid, Emma. You don't want to get hurt again." He took a tentative step in her direction. Not only did she not back down from his advance but she reached out, looking for his hand and intertwining her fingers with his, a smile of encouragement pulling at her lips and causing his heart to almost stop working. He needed to take a deep breath before continuing. "We don't need to put what's happening between us into words. I wonât even ask you to express your feelings. But, please, don't push me away again."
The look Emma gave him was so intense that he felt how it reached his very soul. After what seemed like hours lost in each other's eyes, she shortened the distance between them even more and, after offering him a tiny smile, she pressed her lips to his in a soft, brief kiss, one full of promises. "Be patient," she whispered, her warm breath caressing his lips.
"Always," he replied. "I'm not going anywhere, Emma."
"Good."
His heart pounded frantically in his chest as he reached out his other hand, cupping her cheek delicately. She tilted her head under his touch as she closed her eyes, a quiet sigh sliding between her lips.Â
It was a beginning. He was aware that they still had to work not only to build their relationship, but to be totally honest with their feelings with each other. He had waited four years to reach this situation, and the wait had been worth it. He would not change what he was experiencing now for anything in the world.
When Emma opened her eyes again and he met the emerald intensity of her gaze, he had to resist the urge to kiss her senseless. Instead, he settled for circling her with his arms drawing her to him and wrapping her in a tight embrace. He would never tire of the incredible sensation of holding Emma in his arms, feeling her intoxicating scent seeping inside him making his head spin, while the warmth of her body against his caused a pleasant humming under his skin.
After placing a gentle kiss on the crown of her head, he whispered against her hair. "Do you have any plans right now?"
Emma pressed even more against his chest before answering, "I'm waiting for Elsa to come back. We have to start making dessert for dinner."
Although reluctant, Killian untangled from her, but entwined his hand with hers. "I think I have a better idea. Come with me to meet Belle."
"I'd love to, but Elsa will kill me if I leave her alone after she has also taken care of going to the grocery store."
After everything that happened, he was reluctant to separate from her. "Text her and tell her to go to my apartment instead of yours. After all, dinner is going to be there, isn't it? Besides, I guess my brother won't mind helping her at all."
"Okay⊠Give me ten minutes to get dressed." After turning to her bedroom, Emma seemed to remember something. She approached him again with a suggestive smile adorning her lips. "About the trip to Storybrooke. We've already talked about it on other occasions, but it never hurts to mention it again. I may not exactly remember the kiss and that we shared a bed, but I do remember everything else. It was a fantastic weekend."
"Aye, love. We should return there someday. To create new memories."
"And maybe this time we meet your twin, The Captain." Her eyes suddenly widened, while her face lit up. "We should also invite Elsa to join us; she would love the town and its inhabitants."
"And we would have to make sure we make the room reservations correctly," Killian added as he raised an eyebrow, his lips drawing a smirk, causing Emma to giggle, infecting him in the process. They shared a liberating laugh for the next few seconds, managing to drag away part of their concerns.
"Wow. I needed this moment," Emma said when the laughter subsided. "But I better get ready before it gets even later." She hadn't walked two steps before she turned and approached him again. "And above all, no alcohol involved, please. I want to remember everything." She then placed a quick peck on his lips, a subtle touch, but one full of promises. It was all he needed for now.
//
Christmas Eve Dinner-Party
Killian was elated. After his conversation with Emma, he began to feel like he was walking on clouds. That feeling, far from fading, had accompanied him throughout the day, with Emma by his side since she had barely separated from him since that morning.
As he had already imagined, Elsa did not mind at all moving the dessert preparations to his apartment. His brother gladly agreed to be her assistant in the kitchen, while Emma was relegated to help Belle and himself to finalize the decorations of the house, mistletoe included.
Belle and Emma got along well from the start. Killian still wasn't sure what had gone through Emma's mind the first time they had met and she had behaved quite impertinently with his friend. Since they hadn't discussed that subject again, he took a mental note to ask her later. Even so, Emma had rectified the situation, making this reunion possible. He couldn't feel more grateful to her.
After leaving everything ready for the dinner party, everyone left for The Kraken, where they would work for a couple of hours. A wave of pride seized him when Belle could see for the first time how the bar had changed in these four years thanks to Emma's touch, giving the place a soul of its own.
Although his friend had visited The Kraken long ago, in recent years she had been busy taking care of her sick mother while carrying out two jobs. Belle's visits to Boston had been very sporadic, with him and Liam being the ones traveling to see her on most occasions. That was why she had taken so long to meet Emma. Fortunately, her mother had managed to recover, so that opened the door to more frequent visits in the future.
After closing the bar early, all of them, Ruby and Robin and his family included, went to the brothersâ apartment to enjoy a special Christmas Eve celebration, with delicious food, relaxed conversations, and even some Christmas carols. It might have been the festive atmosphere around them causing bright smiles and sparkling eyes on all the guests. Whatever it was, the truth was that he had never felt more at peace with himself and with the rest of the world than at that precise moment, witnessing the happiness that emanated from all his loved ones.
"Did you figure out what was going on with Emma these last few days?" Killian had been so focused watching the conversation that took place in front of him between Emma and Belle that he hadn't realized that Liam had approached him until he heard his voice.
Killian offered an elusive response after casting a sidelong glance at his brother. "It was nothing important, I guess. She's fine now, isn't she?" He took a sip of his drink, wishing that Liam would not continue his line of inquiry since he wasn't willing to offer further explanations, at least not until he talked to Emma again. Killian kept looking forward on purpose, reluctant to face his brother. Liam didn't seem to catch the hint, though.
"Have you talked to her, you know, about your feelings?"
Liam had tried to keep up this kind of conversation in recent weeks, but Killian had always answered evasively. It wasn't going to be any different today. Besides, he might have found the best way to divert attention, launch a counterattack.
"What about you?"
Liam's brows furrowed in confusion. "What about me? What do you mean?"
"Do you intend to do something about your feelings towards a certain other blonde?"
The way in which Liam's features changed was almost comical. His eyes widened and his mouth hung open. Then his gaze drifted for a split second in the direction of Elsa while he scratched behind his ear. Finally, he nodded almost imperceptibly, as if he were convincing himself, before answering. "Maybe."
Killian cocked his head to one side while arching an eyebrow in appreciation. "So maybe?"
"Aye. You know the motto, a man unwilling to fight for what he wants..."
"...deserves what he gets," Killian finished for him, letting the words sink deep into him.
"Life is too short, little brother." Liam patted his shoulder affectionately before continuing, "Sometimes it's worth not thinking so much and simply acting and pursuing what we really want." After those last significant words, Liam offered him a smile of encouragement, before walking away with a clear destination.
Killian couldn't feel happier for his brother. It was as if the pieces of the puzzle that formed the life of the Jones brothers had finally begun to fit together, offering a glimpse of a promising picture. Just then, one of the pieces of that puzzle, the most precious for Killian, began to walk in his direction, a radiant smile adorning her face and a special glow in her eyes that had the ability to take his breath away.
"Can you come with me to the kitchen, Jones? I need something from there." Emma didn't even wait for an answer, but kept walking in the direction of the kitchen. He, of course, followed in her footsteps.
This woman would never stop surprising him. At the moment when the kitchen door closed behind them, she practically pounced on him, pressing her lips against his in a burning kiss, one with the ability to set him in flames inside. Any coherent thoughts vanished in his head being replaced by a single image, Emma.
He got lost in the incredible sensation of her lips on his and her body pressed against his, generating a delicious friction in the right places. They devoured each other until they had to pull apart to catch their breaths.
"It's not like I'm complaining. Obviously I'm not. But what was this about?" he muttered, his breath still agitated, his forehead resting against hers.
"Well, I've seen you talking to Liam and for some reason, I thought about the mistletoe that was hanging near you."
"You've lost me, love." His brain was certainly not working properly yet, because he didn't catch how those two aspects were related.
Emma separated a little from him while raising an eyebrow in an amused expression. Then she rolled her eyes before answering, "I'm only going to kiss you when I really want it, not because I'm forced to do it due to a stupid tradition marked by a plant."
"So there will be no kiss under the mistletoe?"
"Nope."
"Okay... No kiss under the mistletoe. I got it." He let out an exaggerated sigh pretending resignation and then his lips drew a small pout. "A pity."
"You're such an idiot," she snorted. "Besides the stupid tradition, I prefer to keep this, whatever it is, just for us. At least until we figure things out better."
Killian realized at that moment that, until now, Emma had been the one to initiate all their kisses. Maybe the time had come to rectify that. "Just to clarify, I'm also allowed to kiss you whenever I want as long as it's in private?"
Emma tilted her head while biting her lower lip in a mischievous way. "I guess you'll have to find out for yourself," she replied before finally turning away from him and opening the door again. The bloody siren had the audacity to blow a kiss in his direction before heading towards the living room, a smile of satisfaction drawn on her lips the last thing he saw before the door closed behind her.
Killian needed to take a couple of deep breaths while waiting for his body to recover before he returned to the living room as well. This woman was going to be the death of him, no doubt.
A couple of minutes later, Killian felt able to return with the rest. His gaze inevitably turned in Emma's direction. When their eyes met, she offered him a soft smile before continuing to talk to Ruby and Mulan. Killian's gaze then roamed the rest of the room until he found his brother who was talking to Elsa. When Killian realized the specific spot they were located in, he couldn't help smiling with delight as he went in search of Emma.
Luck seemed to be on his side that night, finally. Just before he approached Emma, Ruby and Mulan left her to start a new conversation with Regina, Robin's new girlfriend. Killian took advantage of that moment to shorten the distance between them to stand right in front of her. "Swan, about the mistletoe..."
"I've already told you, Jones, I'm not gonna kiss you with everyone around." She cut him off abruptly with a somewhat exasperated tone, although Killian detected a hint of playfulness and perhaps desire in her voice.
"I know, I know, a stupid tradition and whatever, but, you may change your mind now." Killian pointed his head in the direction of Liam and Elsa, a huge grin pulling at his lips.
Emma's eyes widened immediately as she gripped his arm tightly. "Holy shit! They're about to kiss!"
Killian couldn't help a quiet chuckle from escaping his throat. It seemed obvious that whatever prejudices Emma had against the mistletoe, they did not apply to Elsa or Liam.
"You were saying, Swan?" he muttered into her ear, resisting the urge to bite her lobe or slide his lips over her neck. Maybe another timeâŠ
"Shut up, Killian, don't distract me now," she mumbled as she pulled her phone from the back pocket of her pants. "Do you think they'll get mad at me if I take a picture of the moment?"
Killian barked out a laugh as he shook his head. He then turned to his brother and shouted, "Hey, Liam. Look up."
//
Liam - December 2019
"Hey, Liam. Look up."
Liam ignored his brother's words at first, too focused on his conversation with Elsa. They had been discussing the next step in relation to Killian and Emma as it seemed that they both were still reluctant to take the final step.
"Oh my god! You are under the mistletoe!" What his ears did catch was Anna's almost deafening yell. It was then that his brain finally processed what was happening.
Slowly, he looked up, finding himself, of course, with the mistletoe sprig hanging just above him. Bloody hell. His gaze then turned to Elsa. She seemed visibly nervous, her gaze traveling from the mistletoe, pausing briefly on him, and then looking at her sister with a pleading expression on her face.
"You have to kiss, guys. You know the tradition," Anna continued, squealing as she bounced and clapped excitedly.
"Don't listen to her, love. You certainly don't have to do anything you don't want to do," Liam assured her in a quiet voice as he offered a reassuring smile, even though his heart threatened to beat right out of his ribcage.
Elsa's cheeks colored a soft shade of pink, highlighting her innate beauty as she bit her lower lip in a way that was perhaps too tempting. He also felt his cheeks burn but he ignored his inner agitation, looking for Elsa's gaze to make sure she was alright.
Her lips curled up as she shrugged. "It's just a kiss, isn't it?" She moved closer to him, causing his heart to beat frantically as the butterflies in his stomach began to flutter. Before shortening the distance completely, her eyes widened slightly. "You want this too, don't you?"
"Aye, since it's a tradition..." he muttered while his eyes bored into hers. The corners of her lips rose slightly before standing on tiptoe and pressing her lips against his own. It was a brief kiss, just a gentle brush, but enough for him to feel the softness of her lips and the warmth of her breath, causing something to stir inside him while everything around him seemed to fade.
Only when Elsa pulled apart was Liam able to recover his senses. Ignoring the cheering around them, he devoted himself to observing her features, finding no trace of regret, but rather an expression of contentment while the flash of something similar to hope crossed her gaze.
"We're definitely the worst matchmakers ever. Not only do we not get them to kiss, but we fall into our own trap. We are idiots."
Liam couldn't prevent a liberating laugh from escaping from his mouth, getting to infect Elsa in the process. "Iâm not complaining at all, love," he managed to assure her once the laughter subsided as he placed an arm on her shoulders. "But we better think of another plan for these two stubborn ones."
"Hey lovebirds, stop whispering and share with the rest." Liam was tempted to ignore Emma's words and remain in his own bubble with Elsa, but he certainly did not enjoy being the center of attention. So, after letting out a heavy sigh, he began to walk away from the mistletoe, keeping his arm around Elsa's shoulders, gently pushing her to accompany him.
"Well, taking advantage of everyone's attention, I'd like to announce something." All eyes in the room suddenly turned to Anna, while Liam noticed how Elsa tensed beside him. Anna's eyes narrowed before she let out a snort. "No, it's not what you're thinking. I'm not pregnant, nor are we getting married. Yet."
"Nor have I proposed to her. Yet," Kristoff added as he winked at his girlfriend.
"What I wanted to announce is that Kris and I have gotten an early Christmas gift and we will also be able to share it with some of you." Anna made a deliberate pause as if she wanted to create tension in the atmosphere.
"Come on, Anna, spit it out."Â
Anna frowned as she raised a finger in warning in Emma's direction. "Patience is not one of your best virtues, Emma. I guess Killian agrees with me." Anna directed a conspiratorial glance towards Killian who responded by nodding, earning a nudge from Emma. "Anyway, as I was saying before the interruption... We... are going to spend New Year's Eve in a cabin in the woods. And best of all, there is room for six people, isn't it wonderful?"
"What Anna means is that both the brothers Jones and Elsa and Emma, are invited to join us," Kristoff explained. "I'm afraid there's no room for anyone else." He gave an apologetic look in the direction of both Ruby and Robin.
Liam's excitement lasted exactly five seconds, the time he needed to try to add that event to his mental schedule and realize that he would not be able to attend. A sense of disappointment took hold of him, because the idea of further developing the incipient relationship with Elsa in a different environment was too appealing. But he could not ignore his responsibilities.
"Thank you so much for the offer guys, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to decline. We're throwing a New Year's Eve party at The Kraken."
"But having a party at The Kraken doesn't necessarily mean you have to attend, right? I mean, you're the boss, you can do whatever you want!" Anna insisted, looking at the others in search of agreement.
She was somehow right. He might feel obligated to stay but that didn't mean Emma and Killian had to decline the invitation too. Just when he was about to make the proposal, Ruby came forward.
"Anna has a point. In fact, I think you three should go. Mulan will be with me that night. She has experience serving drinks, so she will be very helpful." Ruby looked at her girlfriend who offered her a smile while nodding in agreement.
"And you have already given me all this week off to enjoy the holidays with my family, so I will be there too." Liam was about to reply, but Robin kept talking. "Besides, I literally live three floors above the bar and Regina will be there taking care of Roland. I can take small breaks during my shift to see them.â
"I appreciate your support guys, but there will be a lot of work since we estimate that public attendance will be high. I don't think it's fair to load you with more work than necessary, honestly."
"You could hire more temporary bartenders. You have a week ahead to get everything organized." This time it was Belle who made the suggestion, clearly interested in sending him to that cabin in the woods. Yes, he could afford to hire some waiters, but stillâŠ
A deep exhale escaped between his lips, while he felt all eyes on him. He wanted to accept the invitation so badly, not only because that would allow him to spend more time with Elsa, but because it would also be the perfect excuse for both Killian and Emma to continue exploring their relationship outside their usual environment and because he had worked hard during the year and deserved a break.
He cast a sidelong glance at Elsa, who was still by his side. She was looking at her sister with whom she seemed to be having a silent conversation. His gaze then shifted to Emma and Killian who were also sharing furtive glances. It was as if everyone was waiting expectantly for him to make a final decision.
"What do you think, Emma?" Liam had learned to trust Emma's instincts as far as business was concerned, so he decided that if she gave her approval he would cease to be opposed to the idea.
Emma cast a last sidelong glance at Killian before answering. "I have a couple of people in mind who could help. I think there will be no problem at all. Ruby and Robin will have everything under control." To reaffirm her words, she quietly nodded her head, her lips curled upward. "It will only be one night. It will be fine."
His decision seemed obvious. If everyone agreed, who was he to refuse the possibility to spend a couple of days off with his loved ones? "Well, guys, if you put it that way I will have no choice but to accept." Everyone broke into applause but he ignored them, looking for Elsa's gaze instead. The radiant smile she offered him was enough to convince himself that he had made the right decision.

Summer Made Children
Jade hurt his ankle, and is laid up with cast and crutches. Jesse is sitting next to him, doodling heart on their cast to cheer him up.
Summer-made children, to come back to,
JESSE
"Did you fell off the tree?"
Mom indeed been working temp as a nurse (that's why she's not home every nigh; she's working in the emergency unit though the evening till early morning) not even once-- Jess ever saw someone with broken bone and casted leg in front of his eyes. He sat a little away from the bed: unnecessarily looking terrified. This is one of the weekly trip to dad's place as the adults call it, holidays. Yet if it's a holiday why Mom always looked rather sour everytime he's being picked up of the apartment? He noticed so; children always do, her tightened jaw and stifled frown and a little bid of adieu that sounded like, I want him back in Sunday before 7 pm, instead of a nice 'Have a nice weekend!'
"Did bad kids hit you?"
His eyes are all doe; the thing that would still be with him once he later grown up into a man, doe, big eyes. Although little legs just decided to took himself onto the chair right next to the older kid's study, keeping distance from the bed, afraid those little clumsy hands of his would leave the boy in pain accidentally. (he is clumsy, big one.)
"Is it broken?"
(Little gasp!)
"Do you need help!"
JADE
Jade Huang was twelve and he fell from the stairs.
The classroom is large and daunting, far too threatening for Jade's tiny brain to comprehend. He did not like it, not even the slightest. However, he dare not to refuse his momâs will, forced him to get off to school no matter what. Typical Asian parents, he dare say. He wore plain silky white shirt, short sleeve, tapered western, baggy lightweight black pants, then also his most remarkable sceptical and somewhat supercilious, with its odd rectangular, thick dark brown glasses. It was quite unhinged actually, due to the constant damage he shoved. He likes to throw things around when too immersed with something; bad habit never cease, just like wonder does.
Jade never once revel in commingling coeval groups, simply enough, he prefers to be alone. Hence, he wouldnât get surprised anymore if the peers around him despise his presence; uncanny, an oddball, yet shrewd to say the least. He could never mingle well, a perfect misfit. Then, when lunch time comes, he always sits beneath the tall primeval, verdant, gigantic and gnarled, shady trees, all alone but with his fine, readable, small leather-bound books. He would read anything, from classic literature, until full-colored comics.Â
Whether he will understand the contexts or not, possibly more coherent with the latter, it wouldn't be a problem. Reading was and only his solace, in amidst of boisterous cacophony.
âOi, clotpole!â
A chubby, bald, slanted eyes, noteworthy flabby tummy, has appeared. He seems cute, yes, to others, indeed. But Jade, himself, saw the other child, named Jason, as his mortal enemy; Jason oftentimes beat Jade until he felt like his end was near, pulled childish pranks, such as stole Jadeâs favorite toy and many others. As usual, he chose to be wise, at least he thought, to ignore the impudent boy.Â
âI said, oi, clotplole! Didnât you hear or are you deaf?â
âWhat do you want this time?â He asked, nonchalantly.Â
âBuy this for me! Youâre rich, arenât you?â
Jason said with a glimmer in his eyes, playful just like a misbehaving child would, while proud, holding up a crumpled, frayed brittle, piece of paper. There was a picture of something, he was unable to limn it, because it wasnât considered as one of his interests. One thing for certain, it was some kind of toy.
âWhy?â
âBecause I want to!â
âWhy?â
âYouâre rich?â
âWhy?â
âJust buy it, motherfucker!â
âBut I donât want to, and my statement is final.â his tone surprisingly even, almost studious.
âYou bloody wonker!â
The next thing Jade knows, he was at home, laid up with cast and crutches. He was unconcious for a while, and refused to talk. Even when the old fine looking aunty was talking to him, he kept his mouth shut. Albeit seen disheveled, his gaze fixated on looking at a child of eight or nine, all pale skin and thin bones and dark, tangled hair.Â
Ahn Jaesuk, the name of the child. But he prefers to call him Jesse, as prolly everyone did. This is their third meeting, Jade was slightly content, thrilled yet he did want to show it.Â
âHi, Jesse.â
JESSE
"Did it hurt?"
The kid talks so much. So-fucking much, he pulls the chair closer to the bed that his curious side grows. Frown curls in response; he's so expressive in the contrary to the older boy regarding to his either reaction or feelings, big, even. He gives big reactions to almost anything.
(His expressions changes often when he's trying to read Jade's collection of books; the expression where he barely understands letters, the expressions where he found a new verb he never heard before, the expression where he found BIG ACTIONS in the comic books! Later growing up he'll find fondness specially towards DC Comics.)
"I mean, when the bad kids hit you."
Did he come too straightforward? No means to offend, but,
"Or did you really fell off the tree!"
He's careful not to jump into the bed. Sick people needs bigger space, Mom once said. She's the nurse afterall; a pro in sick person, making them less sick, helping the doctors to help the sick. The easy way in comprehending the term in the brain of a nine year old.
"So, do you, need a help when you need to go to pee? Was it hurt when they put the cast on your feet? Mom said where the bone is broken it will be swollen and painful.
JADE
Jade is the only child and he didn't know how to deal with a little brother, the one who acted and played like so. He didnât know how to deal with Jesse, even though he had done lots of research. By all means, reading many books that he could possibly find, few have been proven useful, but the rest look ridiculous though. A snippet from Jadeâs reading material, âRaising A Kidâ, âTeaching Boy About Thingsâ, âShit Brothers Saidâ, âI am A Brotherâ, and the list goes on. Well, what would you expect from someone mediocre, twelve years old, plain yet geeky boy?Â
âHey, do you know what word to describe someone that asks too many questions, talk too much, like you?âÂ
Jade asked, mimicking a wiseacre or smart aleck look alikeâs expression, his brow wrinkled as he leaned in close to headboard, which was covered in white pillows, in his smaller and rather austere bedroom.Â
âI read it in a book, apparently those people are called loquacious.â Jade slurs. He was slightly worried if this is the right choice or not; he was concerned, he hardly believed anything at all. One of the human nature, future is always seemed scary, because they cannot control it; predictions, however, is in another hand. Now, Jade prayed with all his might, he's able to, at least, produce a good outcome through this. Â
Even so, Jade stilled in disbelief, a hefty sigh escaped successfully. Itâs not like it should be a surprise, or anything, because even at the very first meeting, Jesse couldnât shut up; a brazen young boy, inquisitive most of the time. But the child seemed fastidious about Jadeâs current condition and all. Many would think Jesse was being annoying, making the whole plight vexatiously so, most certainly to a sick, helpless boy. However, Jade saw things differently, it was adorable, cute to be truth, and amusing to look at.Â
He felt the sudden urge to squish, pinch those plump cheeks, when he was watching vacuously open, soft vermeil, comparatively dainty lips of Jesseâs keep moving and talking. And so, he did, unconsciously and makes wonder spread in his chest.
âItâs hurt, the pain still lingers but I guess Iâm okay.â He laughed, dryly. âSomeone pushed me. From the stairs. It was scary. It was high. He was bigger than you. Strange.â He said, intermittently so.
JESSE
"What?"
He sounded as chirpy, until a really, foreign word hits his ear, over a pronounciation that the little boy barely could repeat. Mouth opens; involuntarily, a gape visible, and he doesn't even know that he's making that face for that brief moment,
<: O
(That's exactly the face he is making.)
Doe-eyed, mouth-gaped, briefly silent; do all 12 years old be this cool? Or only because Jade spent more times with books instead of communicating with actual person? But Jess surely never heard that word before.
"--Lo, locucious." Hey, he tried his best to repeat that out. Hopefully the older one still has that emphaty to correct the kid, or he will grow sticking to it until someone else is kind enough to point out. But Jess knows the word, retaliation!
Don't ask where did he learn that but Batman comics taught him so! Inclusing many scientific terms (he believed they are scientific, because, Detective Comics,) that came out of the same comic book series.
Jess also spent too much time reading colorful comics.
He gave out big reactions, remember? Again, big frown curling over his big displease of an expression in which  shifted in no time upon the progression of the story; someone pushed me, fell from the stairs, it still hurt--- he cringed a big fear, he was bigger than you; and his frown curling up into a fright. As if the older boy was telling him a horror, bed story time. (Would Jade read him bed story times?).
And he looked up the other boy with that same fright. Is he worried? Well, look at his face right now? "....Joshua got his knee hurt too when we played football in school," Joshua, Joshua Carson, his classmate, but he didn't mention about the fact that the mentioned boy as his classmate. "He skipped school for two! Weeks! I envy!! But then I missed him so I visit him everyday after school."
Chirpy, chirpy little boy,
"Uh-oh do you want me to take your drink!!"
(The story is still in progress).

Raditz stood still, listening to each word in spite of his incessant itch to swing his fist round to sock the prince right in the jaw as hard as he could. Would sign his death warrant, again, but damn itâd feel good. Ignoring this urge though, Raditz listened on, somehow growing only more confused the more information he had been givin, the irony of such a thing not lost on him as he gave a small scoff and shook his head ever so slightly. He stepped back, staying quiet for a while as the dusty cogs in his head worked to digest the information. He wasnât the quickest out there, but eventually the biggest things, least to him anyway, jumped out of what he had just been informed of.
âI- Frieza is dead?! How in the bloody hell did that happen?? I mean that bastard is- was.. heâs dead?! So youâre free then, donât have to follow orders?â Stupid questions in all honesty, fired off rapidly one after another with little time to answer. He kept doing that, needed to work on that little habit of his, damned nerves.
âLet me get this straight, bare with me here considering itâs a lot to swallow at once. You and Nappa came here both, after Kakarot and the Dragonballs I assume. Somehow, instead of my weak fool of a brother dying, Nappa got killed instead, by you no less, Kakarot stayed breathing, and somewhere down the line Frieza croaked as well. Iâd flatter you anâ ask if you killed the bastard, you talked about it often enough, but I mean thereâs just no damn way! Sure youâre pretty strong, yeah, but I couldnât see you taking on Zarbon, and especially not Frieza.â
The long haired saiyan paused for a moment, taking a breath.
âThat whole thing aside though, you stayed here, anâ for my damned brother no less, which makes absolutely zero sense. With the way you worded that, youâd be implying youâre playin catch-up to my kid brother who couldnât handle ME on his own! He had to get the damn Namek to have a cheap shot just to handle me, thereâs absolutely no damn way he could have a fraction of a chance handling you, no damn way!â
It took a moment for Raditzâs wits to catch up with him, brain catching up with his mouth for once as he finally fully digested what Vegeta has said, as well as his own words since. At the thought, the warriorâs eyes went wide, and after that nothing could stop the raucous laughter which came from deep in his chest. Oh it was just rich!! Kakarot, by some mistake or slip up in the workings of the world, had managed to surpass Vegeta, so much so that he could just feel how much it got under the otherâs skin. He just loved it!
âOhhhh boy now that is just bloody hilarious!! Kakarot, KAKAROT, my damn kid brother, and a soft hearted fool without a tail to boot, somehow managed to pull out some way to kick YOUR damn ass somehow! Hooo now thatâs just fuckin fantastic!! Now donât get me wrong princey, youâve got my respect, youâre a touch son of a bitch, you put up with a hell of a lot from that Cold bastard and his gang while we were on the force and I respect ya for that, but the idea of Kakarot wiping the floor with your damn face is the most fantastic picture I could ever ask for! If thereâs anything more poetic than that, anything that could prove to be more of a pay back fuck you than that, I sure as hell cant think of it!â
Raditz had to take a moment to catch his breath after that, his wheezing laughter having exhausted his lungs and damn near brought tears to his eyes. Yes, he respected the prince, respected him a great deal in both regards to strength in battle as well as mental fortitude, not to mention whatever weight came with Royal titles and responsibilities, but at the moment he was also pissed off at him, hence the idea of his failings becoming so incredibly amusing. A good threat or two could get him back in line, sure, but it wouldnât take away the joy he got from imagining his brother besting the âGreat Prince of all Saiyansâ in battle. No, the thought of that alone would forever bring a smile to his face, and nothing the prince could do would never work to make that stop.
soph-choph-rpâ:
While Raditz had been fuming, sure, it was safe to say he certainly had not been expecting the prince to show up behind him out the blue, he wanted to go to him damnit!! Whipping around to face him, the tall saiyan bit the inside of his cheek, the sharp tang of copper which coated his tongue as a result grounding him, acting as a means to keep him from flying off the handle at that moment. His thoughts spun a thousand miles a second, anger at the prince before him at the forefront of his mind, confusion as to why and how Vegeta was here, not to mention this planet being there at all, certainly just behind that as well.
A low growl rose in Raditzâs throat at Vegetaâs words, an action he frankly would not have dared to do during his years of service prior to the whole dying an excruciatingly painful death fiasco. That damned smirk is what did it though, tugging at the thin strands of self restraint he currently held until they pulled so taunt that they, one by one, began to snap. A bitter retort, an incredibly antagonistic one at that, bubbled up faster than he could stop it, tone wild in his voice, a testament towards his confusion, anger, and insecurity regarding the current situation⊠that is, if the flared up fur standing up straight on a rapidly thrashing tail didnât give it away first.
âMe, pathetic? Ha! Real damn rich coming from the likes of you Princeâ
Vegetaâs title was spoke like venom, stinging and sharp.
âThank you, your royal PAIN IN THE ASS, for your boundless concern for your loyal subjects, very very much appreciated really is!â He paused for a brief moment, taking a deep breath and stepping forward before continuing. âWhat happened, huh? What was the plan, you and Nappa let me rot? Speaking of that bastard I donât see his ugly mug and heâs almost always following you around like a whiny pining dog, so Iâm going to go out on a limb here and assume you dropped him too. Some damn âprince of all saiyansâ you are, ensuring your own damn raceâs extinction.â
The anger in his tone was heavy in the air, pained fury at having been dropped like it was nothing obscuring his common sense and rationality with a thick haze of red. Finally though, the tinted lenses faded back a bit, the warrior realizing just who he was talking to and the possible consequences for his actions. He stepped back, tail ducking between his legs to wrap tightly around a thigh. He was nervous. Taking a deep breath in an attempt to calm, he noticed the odd clothes which Vegeta currently wore, a far cry from the strictly sanctioned uniforms adorned by members of the Frieza Force. Finally, with some sense regained, he spoke again and this time with far less bitter venom.
ââŠmy death aside, the hell is it youâre wearing and why the bloody hell is it youâre even on this damn rock in the first place? I know for a fact that Iâve been dead a good long while, not sure the exact length but a damned long time, so why is this mudball not a bunch of rubble floating out in space anyway? I was positive you and Nappa were going to come here, if not for me which you certainly didnât, then for those damn dragon balls that Namek blabbed on about. Assumed youâd blow it up or at the very least clear it out to get a good sum of Credits from lord Frieza, so mind filling me in on why the everloving fuck we are here?!â
More so confused than angry this time, the pitch of Raditzâs voice raised and lowered at random, emphasizing random words in such a way that showed quite clearly how little he truly understood about what was going on. Last he remembered, both he and his brother were dead, a Namek promising some sort of magic to bring his brother back shortly, the whole ordeal on earth, along with his death, being in vain. Salt to the wound, brutalizing his saiyan pride. Uncouth and rough on the edges as he was, Raditz was at least semi decent, least he thought so anyway. Behaved himself for the most part, followed orders, fulfilled his duties as both a soldier and a guard to the prince, kept his wits about him well enough. May not have been nearly as strong as some, not even marginally so, but he had always tried. Always kept his head up, even when faced with the destruction of his planet. Death had scared him, had been the main motivation when it came to his constant fight, and to face it then be mocked in what he had assumed were very final moments⊠it had hurt to say the least, left quite the mark. Though it had been quite a long time, decades even, the time didnât quite feel that way to Raditz, and the wounds to his pride were still quite fresh for the long haired saiyan. Seems the princeâs words, where as before they rolled off him like drops of water to waxed glass, had struck a nerve this time. His walls were down, mind exhausted, and in short Raditz was vulnerable. He hated it.
Vegeta sensed his rage, how it fluctuated his ki with each spat insult, every incensed complaint over his death. Reigning in his temper had never bode well for the prince, and it took a great portion of control to keep it in check. Where would the fun be in blasting the idiot into oblivion so soon? Driving a knife into old wounds, those related to his failure as the prince of his people, his reckless disdain for the few who were left and loyal to him did little to move him in the way the other Saiyan hoped. Dwelling on his past, the decisions he made, did nothing for him. Digging it up and dragging out the corpse only made a mess he didnât care to clean up. It distracted him, nothing more.
He kept silent in the beat Raditz had paused to catch his breath; hewas only just beginning his tirade, Vegeta was sure. Onyx gaze snapped to the movement of his tail. To that day, he still felt its phantom presence once in a great while, the ghost of his own coiled around his waist or swishing content arcs in the first moments of wakefulness. Another relic of the past he refused to give much thought.Â
Who was he? Raditzâs questions regarding his garb to how this accursed planet still revolved around its sun exacerbated that question. Louder and more demanding hisses at the back of his mind. He had answers for him, certainly. But, as he played them through his head, they all withered in the wake of his pride, his own inner turmoil and confusion over the path his life had taken. One he felt he had had little to no control over. A bad decision after another, then boarding a ship whose destination he didnât care to know at the time. Didnât care to question. Simply jammed the autopilot controls and let the damn thing take over.
â If youâre finished babbling, â he growled when the other appeared to take a more final pause, â Iâll explain. â
Perhaps not every detail. Raditz didnât need his life story. The chain of failures that planted him on an unstable, slippery state of being.
â I told you not to come here, told you it was a waste of damn time and that if your foolish brother couldnât handle a planet of weaklings, he was no use to us. So spare me the blame for your death. â He grit his teeth as he considered what information was pertinent enough to share with Raditz.Â
â Nappa is dead. I killed him. Frieza is dead, too. â The grip on his biceps tightened. â Your brother is still on this planet and alive, despite my efforts to end his life. I remained on this planet to do just that. To surpass him and reclaim my place as the most powerful Saiyan. â
He didnât bother with details. If Raditz was anything, he was perceptive. Let him fill in the blanks. Get his laughs at Vegetaâs expense over with. Perhaps it would stoke his ire enough to kill him again. End this nightmare before it could truly take hold.
