[source]
first, I like the Fade pun in "the crimson stains will never fade" hh. :>
second, we talked [here] about how the deluxe armors look ancient elfy, and the description here calls them "curiosities from a forgotten era". the weapons blurb tells us that the weapons are "of the Fallen Kingdom" - given the appearance of the items, presumably this Kingdom and the era is Elvhenan, before it fell. this is confirmed in the names of the armors for Rook - Bellanaris, Revas and Harellan are of course elven words.
from this info, we can see that the bottom right weapon is a staff. the top left is a shield (here's another shield from DA:I with "Aegis" in the name for reference. the word means protection or backing, and also a shield or breastplate type thing associated with mythological features like Athena), and in sword-and-board style it comes with a sword. we know that each of the 3 classes in the game will have "two distinct weapon types". it seems like the names of these 6 weapons might note what these are: [dual] blades and bow for rogue, sword&shield and 2-handed (e.g. a maul) for warrior, and staff and "spellblade" for mages. the latter is 👁️ for me as I've been wondering what the second weapon for mages is for ages now. it was like "wands? floating spellbooks like some mage NPC enemies in DA:I?" but maybe it's these "spellblades"? ^^ which is also the name of one of the 3 mage specs. :D
Bellanaris: 'eternity' (see: Var Bellanaris in DA:I, the elven burial site. Keeper Gisharel: "Var Bellanaris. "Our Eternity."")
Revas: 'freedom' (one place it crops up is the secret greeting to enter Fen'Harel's sanctuary in Trespasser. Ar-melana dirthaveren. Revas vir-anaris.)
Harellan: in Dalish use, 'traitor to one's kin' (see: Codex Entry: The Rebel God). its root-word is related to harillen, 'opposition', and hellathen, 'noble struggle', so the ancient elven use of this word is maybe more along the lines of rebellion than deception.
Armor of Bellanaris and Ghellara Helm? Harellan's Bolts and Katriel's False Face? Revas Robes? for the Circlet of Awe, maybe on qunari Rooks it shows as vitaar as here, or it doesn't show due to their horns.
I wonder if more specific than ancient elven, these 3 bonus armors are related to Fen'Harel and his followers specifically. The Rebel God codex is about Solas ('harel). a heroic rebel against tyranny and slavery is someone associated with freedom. Fen'Harel's friend Mythal in the form of Flemeth is is Asha'bellanar, the woman of many years, and -anaris crops up in his secret greeting. if you wanted to, you can read into the three armor names a Fen'Harel connection. I could see a scenario where you might like, find these armors in the Lighthouse or something. maybe a codex or item description which associates them with followers of Fen'Harel or Mythal. (here I am just speculating for fun ^^)
Ghellara is a new name or word. it could be elven, as we have "Gh" in e.g. "Ghilan'nain" and "ara" as a sound crops up in the language a lot.
Katriel (🥺...) was an Orlesian elven bard and lover of King Maric, from The Stolen Throne. she hid her true identity from him, like a "False Face". her name and lore has cropped up in other item names before, like Katriel's Grasp. ahh, this is making me so excited to find and read all the other item names and descriptions in the game :D these flavor texts are fun and often super interesting 👁️
the 7 weapon and armors for the companions also have interesting names. they have 1 bonus weapon and 1 bonus armor each, and I wonder if the names of these items were chosen as they relate to their personalities, storyarcs, backstories, abilities etc. ((I'm overanalyzing and reading waaay too much into the names of these items just for fun, don't take this post too seriously, wild speculating is just fun to do. ^^))
Davrin: Grey Wardens need to have resolve to do what they do, and for a warrior 'resolve' has tanky connotations. we know Davrin is bold, and you get the impression that Davrin stands firmly and determined from lines such as "Nobody dies on my watch! For the Wardens!". As for High Constable - this is the rank of the Grey Warden who is second-in-command to the First Warden. historically during the time of the griffons, they were also the order's aerial commander. in recent times, they have also become the public face of the Order, acting as the ambassador to the High King and leading local recruitment. Maybe this is Davrin's specific Warden rank? if so, this is our highest-ranking Grey Warden companion yet, and I'm sooo curious to see the relationship and interactions between him and the First Warden. Davrin is also described as charming - perfect to be a public face and ambassador right? :D I also wonder if the historical role of aerial commander for that rank is part of why Davrin is the guardian of Assan. (also, there are some neat thoughts on the design of Davrin’s 'defaut' armor here. that post talks about the in-world griffon rider and irl aerial elements of his outfit design. :>) Or maybe he isn't yet, but can become this rank during the game? as for beacon, it has the connotations of light, hope, and towers and high places. when all seems lost during a Blight, the Grey Wardens come and save Thedas. I guess Beacon Edge is a sword. ^^
Emmrich: we have seen Emmrich holding a staff which does have an incessant gaze. a skull cannot close its eyes, and will 'look' for eternity. Mystique suits a gentleman necromancer who is a member of a mysterious order.
Neve: fervor is intense and passionate feeling, almost like zeal. Jessica alluded to this part of Neve's character during the Companion Q&A panel at SDCC. she described Neve's loyalty, dedication and great love for Docktown and its people. Neve is "really really fighting for those people", and Jessica loves how she has "that kind of a passion" and how she has "dedicated her life" to that and the other vision for Tevinter that she really sees. John mentioned that Neve is pushing back and fighting back against the Tevinter mageocracy and slavery. I guess fervor refers to these traits and beliefs of Neve's. Cat's Eye reminds me of horn-rimmed glasses (tell me that wouldn't be Neve's style in a modern AU hh?) and the imagery of a cat on the streets of Minrathous, ever-watchful from the shadows. it suits a detective from a big city with a dark underbelly. ^^ Feline senses are strong and sensitive - an investigator would never miss a clue at a crime scene or be caught unawares, yknow?
Harding: a Scout needs to be focused so that they do not miss anything when scouting. there is the imagery of a scout focusing on their surrounds, or looking at a far-off horizon. a marksman needs focus for their arrows to hit their targets. Harding has been focused on chasing down Solas for many years at this point in the timeline. focus is also a game mechanic in DA:I. we accumulate focus by killing enemies and when the bar is fully charged, the Inquisitor can use their Focus ability. maybe this refers to Harding's new magical powers? maybe mechanically in gameplay she can use them kind of like how focus in DA:I? as for Sunderbow, of course Harding is an archer. Sundermount is a mountain, and you can talk about "sundering armor". but what "sunder" really makes me think of is 1). the Altar of Sundering that was found in the Deep Roads in Ortan Thaig. it summons a Fade creature and is a source of magical power. why did the dwarves, who don't use magic, of that place have such an altar? 2). Sundering, the sacred mace wielded by Luthias Dwarfson, a famous Ash Warrior.
Legend says the mace was not crafted by hand, but instead hatched from an egg high in the mountains and then carried by birds to Luthias as a wedding gift from the Lady of the Skies. When Luthias dies, dwarves arrived to carry him to Orzammar to be buried as one of their own with the Stone. Sundering was to lie at his side, but the mace could not be found. Stories say the birds reclaimed it and will deliver it to another hero in time.
3.) various dialogue Solas has with Varric in DA:I.
"Dwarves are the severed arm of a once mighty hero, lying in a pool of blood. Undirected. Whatever skill of arms it had, gone forever. Although it might twitch to give the appearance of life, it will never dream." / "You truly are content to sit in the sun, never wondering what you could've been, never fighting back."
Solas: "Do you ever miss life beneath the earth? The call of the Stone?" Varric: "Nah. Whatever the Stone - capital S - is, it was gone by the time my parents had me." Solas: "But... do you miss it?" Varric: "How could I miss what I never had?"
Dwarves as they are in modern Thedas are a sundered arm, unconnected. They are apart from themselves, and from their parents, the Titans. their connection to the Titans broke when the Titans fell; without the Titans, they can't be "taller". if Harding's new magical powers has something to do with the Titans (see: Valta), I wonder if the "sunder" in "Sunderbow" refers to this.
Taash: there isn't much to go on here, but "might" makes sense for a mighty dragon-hunter, and a dual-wielding warrior has more damage-dealing warrior connotations (raw strength) than a more tanky-type, shield-bearing one. "Grief" makes me so worried 🥺 is Taash okay? what is she sad about? is there a bereavement in her backstory? who or what did she lose? what is Taash grieving? please, my heart hurts.
Bellara: you have to have nerve to be a Veil Jumper, a group that only accepts those brave enough to face the dangers in Arlathan Forest including its reality-warping magic. she's brave, optimistic, energetic, an adventurer; daring in her knowledge-seeking quest and desire to find out what's true and what isn't. she just sees a problem and wants to solve it. :) Sorrow.. we already know that Bellara has seen a lot of tragedy in her backstory, and that her optimistic outlook is sometimes a mask to hide the fact that she's hurting and in pain. like with Taash my heart hurts and I wonder what happened in her past 🥺
Lucanis: "heartpiercer" is a great name for the knives of an assassin that always find their mark and kill them. he always gets the contract done, and strikes fatally and with precision. he also pierced all our hearts 💘💘 (heartbreaker.. 🥺?) "Gall" is really interesting.. it has multiple different meanings and connotations. brazenness, temerity, bold behavior, audacity (I'd guess these are the meaning here). bile. great misery, suffering and bitterness. an open wound. to harass or harry.

During my second playthrough of WotR, I found something that adds a particularly fascinating bit of context to a romance with Arueshalae and how that looks to anyone outside of your inner circle. One that I think further explains both Hulrun's reaction to it and why Galfrey considers Arueshalae a strike against the KC at the end of Act III.
What I found was the in-game book "Unsung Feats behind the Crusades", which can be found in the Ivory Labyrinth. The text is shown below in a screenshot and transcribed into the alt-text if the image is not loading.*
Tumblr media
For further context, the Third Mendevian Crusade is the one that Hulrun spearheaded and is widely considered to be a complete failure because it devolved into witch hunts and infighting. While Hulrun is not explicitly mentioned here, this is entirely in line with his behavior. Furthermore, the brave maiden reads remarkably like the Knight-Commander (particularly an Angel or Azata path one): an inspiring leader from seemingly nowhere who likely would have been a major figure in if not the leader of the nascent Third Crusade... tempted into folly and sin, much like a Demon or Lich path commander that doesn't go Legend or Gold Dragon.
Heck, this sounds eerily familiar to what happens in the cRPG version of Staunton Vhane, especially him turning to the demons and Minagho only to be felled when you take Drezen back from the demons. And now you are Knight-Commander, de facto Warden of Drezen, and have the Sword of Valor which has transformed in your hands... then you accept Arueshalae into your personal lance or even start romancing her?
How do you imagine that must look to those outside of your inner circle, particularly those who have lived through the above two incidents? Hulrun may well have lit the aforementioned brave maiden's pyre, and Galfrey would have been left to sort out the fallout of that incident on top of Staunton Vhane's entire saga.
Unlike us, they have not travelled with and gotten to know Arueshale or witnessed how she resonated with the Song of Elysium or been saved by Desna's aegis. They have been busy governing Kenabres and Mendev as a whole, and only hear about this through rumors or a game of telephone.
All things considered, both of them are remarkably calm about it when they come to Drezen and see that the rumors about a succubus were accurate.
*For the sake of due diligence, we should also assess the source, particularly as this is the only time the incident is mentioned to the best of my knowledge. The in-game book is explicitly a pep piece written for Baphomet's neophytes to read and be inspired by, so it is most certainly embellished. However, while details may have been exaggerated or embellished other known quantities such as Hulrun's witch hunts and the Third Crusade being infamous for infighting like this leads me to conclude that the basic facts are most likely true. Especially as lying to neophytes at this stage is a good way to set yourself up for feelings of betrayal later.

In defense of c!Sam and his rabbithole... he was kind of pre-programmed to fall into it?
See, a long time ago there was a king, Sam Prime, who was searching for immortality. And this king tried many ways, with science and with magic. One of his attempts was with Blade magic. He sought out the most powerful healing Blade in all the worlds. Eventually, the core crystal of the Blade named Dream fell into his hands.
...yeah Sam Prime basically had Dream's previous Driver killed so that he could get his hands on Dream. It's nothing to worry about! After all, it's not like Dream will remember
Unfortunately, resurrection is the realm of the gods and the Aegis Blades. And while Dream's healing magic was powerful enough to slow the aging of the King, it wasn't enough to completely stop it.
So the king came up with another plan. He had discovered cloning, and the previous experiments with Blade Resonance had shown him the boundaries of individual souls. Moving the soul was trickier, but not impossible. So, if his current body couldn't last forever, then he would make new bodies, and move to them when the current body wore out or was too injured. If he was hopping to a clone body of himself, it's not like it would be wrong.
Part of the reason why the king doesn't care so much about taking over the bodies of his clones is that he don't really register them as individual people? They're not a person in their own right, they're just a (lesser) copy of him.
Dream helped. Dream was the king's Blade and he always helped.
The king's friend, Philza, hated the plan. As the Aegis of the Goddess of Death, he though that cheating Death this way was wrong and damaging. And not just to the world--transferring to a new body may not hurt Sam or snap the Resonance, but it always left Dream sick and woozy for the next day.
This has to do with aether and how Resonance works, basically. The Resonance is tied to the soul, but the aether exchange works on a physical level. The clones are perfectly normal, regular Players--which means they don't have the correct aether saturation for a Driver. Dream always ends up feeling sick with symptoms like the Resonance did snap because of the sudden imbalance, and he also desires physical closeness and intimacy, such as hugs and cuddling, to try reassure himself that no matter what he's feeling, his Driver is still there.
Eventually, something goes wrong. Sam Prime transfers to a new body under poor circumstances and cannot immediately decant it. They were far from home, far from the castle when he died. Dream is killed before he can make his way back, and his core crystal taken off server. No one knows about the lab and the trapped Sam Prime except Philza--and as far as Philza is concerned, this situation is probably for the best.
~
Some of Sam Prime's "unborn" clone bodies escape, eventually. One was Sam Bucket. Another is the current Awesamdude. Neither of them really remember anything from Sam Prime, but as his clones they get some spillover things about how the expect the world to work. Like pre-installed biases.
And it didn't matter much for Sam Bucket, but unfortunately, the circumstances of the server are leading to a lot of them being expressed in Awesamdude.
Sam Prime was a king; his word was law. Awesamdude is the Warden of Pandora's Vault; he is the sole authority protecting the rest of the server from the Egg.
Dream was a Blade. He was Sam Prime's Blade. He belonged to the king, and the actions he took were Right and Just because Sam Prime was the king and his word was Law. It could have been any other Blade that was the strongest healing Blade, but Fate and Destiny made it Dream.
Dream is a Blade. Awesamdude didn't know. Now he does. Dream's actions were Wrong and Bad, but even then, he tried to be Good. He should be Awesamdude's Blade so that all his actions can be Good again. Dream was already Awesamdude's friend--clearly Fate has aligned to show that Dream and Awesamdude will be a good Blade-Driver pair.
~
So Sam is, unfortunately, already vulnerable to losing himself in the particular spiral that emerges within Pandora's Vault. The Egg isn't really helping matters either--even if it can't control Sam right now, it can still influence his thoughts to give them a patina of Evil God. Like, he'd be having the same thoughts without the Egg, but it's definitely adding a huge heap of condescension to all his actions and thoughts.
Like, instead of "Sam needs to keep the Egg confined to protect the server," it becomes "Sam needs to keep the Egg confined because the rest of the server is too weak and needs to be kept safe."
Quackity is still reaching out to him a little to help with Las Nevadas, but Sam isn't seeing anywhere near as much of him as canon!Sam saw of canon!Quackity, so there's less of an emotional connection.
And then c!Tommy and c!Tubbo reach out to Sam for help. After all, he promised that he'd help protect them. And Tommy just found Dream....
And Dream's new Driver isn't Sam is c!Niki.

All four school groups had arrived, and kids mingled all over the area. The Saint George boys—and they were all boys—were wearing matching tan slacks and blue blazers, school crest on the pocket. The Wall Creek kids weren’t in uniform, unless two-hundred-dollar sweaters and fleeces counted as a uniform. The clifftop offered a tremendous view, even with the sun setting, over the vast green hills and valleys. “Eh,” Charlotte said, “The Alps are better. More dramatic.” Melanie would not have to room with Lorraine, it turned out; someone had scared up another bed, and she’d moved in with Fawn and Charlotte Boussard for the week. She was the head of the AEGIS delegation: while the other two schools brought their headmasters, in Europe they apparently trusted their junior Wardens to travel alone. Charlotte sure seemed like the leaderly type. Soon after meeting Melanie, Charlotte ascertained that she was troubled, that the trouble was because of a boy, and offered advice. “Let him simmer for a bit. Silent treatment. Don’t flirt with other boys. Not yet, at least. Stay in a group of girls. Men cannot abide female solidarity. It reminds them that we don’t need them, not like they need us,” she said, with the airy elegance of someone twice her age. “Soon, he will be desperate for your attention, and a desperate boy is like a trained dog.” The conversation, like Charlotte’s black skirt and cashmere sweater, was exceedingly French. Melanie had never been a ‘silent treatment’ type of person, but nor did she want Jordy’s protection to turn into her crutch. So yeah. Let him simmer. There were plenty of other people to talk to. “This is my first Equinox too,” said a Wall Creek girl named Sophie. She was tall and muscular. At a normal school she’d have played volleyball or something. “I was always curious about Kahoti. You really just go to school with three thousand civilians every day, huh? Wild. Wall Creek, you can’t even see it unless you’ve been admitted. It’s Warded off to everyone else.” As they talked, Melanie realized that even Wardens had their regional differences: Sophie’s East Coast was the land of the Atlantic League, which had its roots in the colonial era but was now something of a private supernatural spy network, staffed by graduates of the terrifyingly competitive Wall Creek. Melanie’s Midwest was the domain of small independent operators like her father—and grandfather, who took the concept to its logical extreme in Florida. The South was the home of vast family trees patrolling whole halves or thirds of states and reporting to a chief patriarch or (in this case) matriarch. The West was a mess of gangs, cults, and kooks. “All the American traditions are a mess,” Charlotte said. “AEGIS is the result of every country in Europe uniting under one banner, and we’re at the cutting edge of modern supernaturalism.” “Yeah, ‘cause you almost wiped each other out in World War II,” Sophie said. “If you didn’t band together, America would have eaten your lunch.”

Writing all of this up to the tune of "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" because it felt suitable.
Reverie heads over the Junes food court one more time and as destiny would have it, the team wants to have a final meeting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
How fucking convenient. You know, if the Midnight Channel birthed itself with conception-via-rumor, that would be remarkably fitting given the game's obsession with rumors.
But man, this conversation with the team is great because I HAVE BEEN BITCHING ABOUT THESE QUESTIONS FOR WEEKS NOW.
Who created the Midnight Channel and how did Namatame, Adachi, and Reverie all get the power of Persona to start off?
SPEAKING
OF
ADACHI
Tumblr media
Adachi spent his cigarette money on some stationery and stamps apparently. He sent a letter to Reverie and what's striking is the coolness, the resignation, the lack of his previous simmering anger. Reverie told Adachi he could still change and personally I wasn't sure but who knows!
But Adachi writes to be helpful, because he's clued into all the supernatural elements of this case and one thing has been haunting him: he cannot remember where he first heard of the Midnight Channel either. Just a rumor, just a whisper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Genuinely: Adachi is a top tier gaming villain. Huge fan.
Tumblr media
PFFFT HAHAH. THANKS MAN! APPRECIATE IT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
lmao Chie, a little known localization of fucking Cassandra I guess.
The game encourages me to try and figure out the first thing that happened to Reverie in this game, what happened upon arriving in Yasoinaba. Which.... the very first thing was meeting Marie, but I'm not allowed to go into the Velvet Room yet for some reason, so I head over to talk to Dojima and Nanako instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...........
hold please.
Tumblr media
Hang on a fucking minute. Are you serious right now.
Tumblr media
After a brief detour to my favorite liminal limo of the mind--
Also, this only occurred to me now.
Tumblr media
You frequently visit the Velvet Room in dreams and it's associated with the hero's unconsciousness. Is Igor's red-veined eyes meant to be a nod to the idea that he is a warden of the sleeping world and as such he never sleeps himself? Or am I reading too much into it.
Actually who knows, this game loves the Jungian collective subconsciousness shit, Persona and the Nonary Games are making out in Philosophy 101 talking about the Morphogenetic Field.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway. I see the Velvet Room folks and go to the gas station.
And this gas attendant has been hanging out on every rainy day since the start of the game, and all of a sudden,t he weather shifts from bright and sunny to rain.
da fuck
Tumblr media
excuse me i finally figured out that fucking voice, that's Karen Straussman, aka fucking AEGIS FROM PERSONA 3 jfc no wonder hearing it tickled my fucking brain so aggressively, i had JUST finished P3P
Tumblr media
They put the Sagiri into-- wait. Oh my god. Is that why Namatame's whole shadow situation was so fucking weird?
if they put the Sagiri into Adachi and Namatame, then what did they put into Reverie????
Tumblr media Tumblr media
LITERALLY NO IDEA, I AM CURRENTLY CONTENDING WITH THE DUBIOUSNESS OF "it was the gas station attendant" RIGHT NOW
Tumblr media Tumblr media
....... oh the.... the weird inexplicable and suspicious lecture on the creation of Japan by Edogawa all the way back in Iwatodai. okay. Izanagi and Izanami. So Reverie has the subconscious imprint of Izanagi in him, the person who locked Izanami in Yomi.
/blows out a breath
okay
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YEP I SURE DO
lmao my feelings on this ending are in progress and I wanna see how this all falls into place before having an opinion

A Newbie Guide to DPS
HALO~
I make this newbie guide in the hopes that it helps new players. The in game tutorial is...adequate, but it leaves out the nuance of playing with others. So in addition to general info I have added an etiquette guide
Suggestions welcome! But please remember that this is meant to be a general beginners guide, so I won't get into all the specifics.
Everything under the cut!
Now some people might say the DPS have it easy, and to be fair, we don't lead the charge or bring our buddies back from the dead [most of us]. But do you really think the Tank and the Healer want to do a 30 minute dungeon run? Or want to try and man a cannon while enemies keep punching them in the back of the head? They get to focus on what they are doing, because we are doing everything else!
The DPS Club is the most diverse of the job groups, so we will not be covering a lot of the class specifics [though I will point out unique traits if relevant]. For simplicity, we'll stick with group names: the close range fighters aka Melee [MNK, SAM, DRG, RPR, NIN], the long ranged fighters aka Ranged [BRD, MCH, DNC] and the magic users aka Caster [SMN, BLM, RDM]
THE RULES OF THE DPS CLUB
1. Don't Die
You can command the most destructive magics in all the world, but it won't mean much if you've been surrounded by enemies that can and will, take you out in a few hits. Luckily that's what the Tank is for! So you can freely beat the enemies heads in without worry! BUT, remember the Tank can't actually block all the damage, they just direct it. You still need to be avoiding Area of Effect moves [AOE], and generally trying not to stand right on top of the Tank, as some of the attacks can go through the Tank and hit you. This is called Cleave, and is why Tanks will typically point the boss away from the party.
For the Melee this is the part where you must learn to dance. A conscientious Tank will try to group the mobs in a way that keeps you safe, but sometimes that's just not how the dice rolls. So keep one eye on your Tank and the other on the ground lol
Ranged can literally run in circles while attacking from a distance so there's no shortage of mobility here lmao But if you're spinning like top into all the AOE's and then get Cleaved then you need to adjust your arc.
Yes, this means you too Casters. I know you guys have to stand still to attack, but if you die before you can pull off your spell it won't matter :'> One thing that can help is a little trick called slide-casting! When you are casting a spell, there is a half-second or so just before it is unleashed, where you can move, and the spell will still cast! This will take some practice to get a feel for it, but is great for especially hectic fights. At the very least: check that your health is full, that you are not in a Venn diagram of death, and that the healer isn't occupied with keeping someone else alive!
All DPS [except BLM] also have a self-Healing move [Melee & Ranged: Second Wind, RDM: Vercure, SMN: Physick], and the Melee have an additional heal called Blood Bath, which heals you as you do damage. DNC also has a party wide heal called Curing Waltz.
Some DPS also have skills that will increase the potency of healing moves for themselves and the party [MNK: Mantra, BRD: Nature's Minne], meaning you can use them before a strong attack is coming, or simply before you use your own healing move, to help you and the party recover more HP.
At this time only one DPS has a status curing skill. BRDs can use the skill Wardens Paean to remove a curable debuff from themselves or another party member.
Quite a few DPS also have their own Mitigation skill similar to the Tanks. Some only reduce damage for the user [MNK: Riddle of Earth, NIN: Shade Shift, SAM: Third Eye, BLM: Manaward, SMN: Radiant Aegis], while others will be party wide so long as they are within range [RPR: Arcane Circle, BRD: Troubadour, DNC: Shield Samba, MCH: Tactician, RDM: Magick Barrier]. Additionally, the Melee DPS have a Role Skill called Feint which reduces the amount of damage the target does to the party.
Remember, nothing is a bigger DPS loss than dying!
2. Control the Battlefield
The Tank is the leader, and they will be doing their best to make sure everything in the room is focused on them. But if things start to get crazy or if extra factors come into the fray, that's when you need to step in!
When you are facing groups of enemies [which is most of the time], you want to be using your AOE skills primarily. The Tank will also be doing this in order to keep the enemy focused on them. This makes it so the party can make a clean sweep of the enemies faster and move on to the next pull quicker! Once you get down to two or one enemies, you can start focusing on attacking one at a time.
Occasionally ranged enemies can put a damper on the AOE attack strategy though, as they tend to hang back from the rest of the group. Sometimes a skilled Tank can find a way to force them to come in closer, but if not, look to DPS these enemies down first!
If the Tank misses an enemy and it targets you, do not panic! Bring it to the Tank. Grab that random Coblyn and wave it in the Tank's face until they take it from you!
If the Tank misses an enemy, and you see one go directly for the Healer, go kick it in the face! You must get its attention on you, and away from the Healer. Then, you guessed it, bring it to the Tank!
If the Tank goes down, the enemies will divide their attention on you and your Healer. This is because their enmity [or aggro] is based on two things: who is doing the most damage, or who is generating the most enmity, and they really hate the Healers regen moves. Do your best to take the heat off your Healer and stay alive while they get the Tank back up!
Some bosses will summon extra enemies to the battle to fight you. The additional enemies [Adds] should be quickly eliminated. They typically will not have a lot of health, and will only serve to annoy and harry your party while trying to kill the boss if left alone. Sometimes extra adds will disappear when the boss dies but not always.
Melee and Ranged, you also have a couple skills that you can use to either Stun or Interrupt enemies from doing certain attacks. These are indicated by the Progress Bar, showing that the attack is charging up. The normal progress bar indicates an attack that can be stopped by Stunning the enemy [IF they can be stunned, some are impervious]. Melee can do this with the skill Leg Sweep. The flashing progress bar indicates that the attack can be Interrupted. Ranged can do this with the skill Head Graze. Remember that Stun and Interrupt are not interchangeable! Enemies who have been stunned multiple times will become impervious to it, and Bosses cannot be Stunned at all.
Extra mechanics like flipping switches and shooting cannons and so on during the battle- that's up to us! The Tank needs to keep the enemies focused on them and the Healer needs to focus on keeping all of you alive. So if the boss needs to get shot with a cannonball in order to stop it's big party-wiping attack, its up to the DPS to get it going! [This seems to be slowly getting phased out in Main Scenario, but is still present in a fair amount of optional dungeons, so it's still good to keep in mind]
3. Maximize Your Damage
You've dodged all the enemies attacks and and made sure your party is safe, now its time to turn to your enemies and do what you do best- melt those motherfuckers HP bars!
Now! This is much too large and diverse a topic for the DPS Club to really get into the nitty-gritty of it for each class, so I encourage you all to look up guides for the specific class you are interested in. Finding a training dummy in the game to test things out on to get a feeling of the class's rhythm will help too! But most importantly, READ YOUR TOOL TIPS! Hovering your mouse over them will give a detailed description of each skill. Some general tips for everyone:
Pay Attention to Your Combos! Any attack move you can do that is a part of a combo [the skill description will say it has a "Combo Action" with another skill] will do more damage if you do it in the correct order of the combo. These are also visually indicated when you start with your first attack skill, the next in the combo will have a flashing dashed line moving around the icon.
Always be Using Your Off-Global Cool Down Skills! What does that even mean, WELL, those combo moves I just mentioned? They all recharge at the same time, meaning they all have the same "Cool Down" [CD] timer or Global Cool Down [GCD]. But you'll get extra attacks that have their own CD, that are independent of your usual combo moves. This means that if you can use one of those moves to attack in between the time you are waiting for your next combo move to be available. So use those whenever possible! [if you ever read a guide and it talks about "weaving" skills, this is what they mean]
Always be Using Your Damage Over Time Skills! These are skills that then inflict a form of status or de-buff on your enemies that will cause a small amount of damage to the enemy, repeatedly, for a small amount of time. Also known as DOTs. Most of these are a single attack that affect one target, with a few exceptions: BLM and RPR- which have both a single target and Area of Effect [AOE] DOTs, MCH and NIN- which only have a AOE DOTs [NIN is ground targeted one], and BRD- which has two single target DOTs. DNC, SMN, and RDM are the only DPS that have no DOT moves as of Endwalker. HOWEVER this is best utilized on Bosses, unless you have one of the rare AOE DOT's it's a DPS loss to try an place a DOT on every single enemy. Just focus on AOE attacks for crowds otherwise.
Always be Buffing Your Damage! All DPS have the ability to either temporarily increase their damage, or increase the speed of which they attack. Many of them also get party wide versions of these skills. There are some that you may want to use strategically [such as selecting another DPS for a single target one], but for the most part use these as frequently as you can.
And for each group, here are some extra things to consider so you can up your game:
Melee- For the most part you guys want to be paying attention to how your combos work, and where you are striking the enemy from. All the Melees have a basic 1-2-3 combo, and as you get more moves, you might either get another combo set, or have your original combo make a branching point. Again read your skill info, feel it out. In most cases for these branching combos, the final skill in a set will do more damage based on if you strike from the Flank, or from the Rear. These are called Positionals. To try and explain simply: the open space on a targeted enemy circle is the Rear, and the lined spaces on either side of the Rear [up until the little notch] are the Flanks. Those are your sweet spots, dance between them!
Ranged- This is a strange spot because MCH honestly is very similar mechanics wise to the Melee group: it has a combo and relies fully on damage, but it does not have to worry about Positionals at all. On the other hand, damage for BRD and DNC is more "Random Number Generated" [RNG] based. This makes it a bit hard to make a consistent damage output, but that's okay, because you guys get to buff yourself and your pals with song and dance! DNC, always be dancing to provide attack buffs. BRDs, keep in mind that your Songs do not stack with the Songs or other BRDs, so try to pick a different Song from the other BRD to max out those damage buffs!
Casters- For you guys the importance is mostly on learning the rhythm of your magic, and making sure you position yourself well. Ideally you want to be familiar enough with the battles so that you don't have to move, and you can keep spamming spells all day. This is particularly important for BLM, as they are the least mobile of the three. Remember the slide casting trick mentioned earlier! It will take a little practice but it's very worth it. For RMD, remember that your sword skills are always more powerful if they are used when you have some magic built up!
4. The Limit Break
The battle has raged and you've got your enemy on the ropes, it's time to finish them off! It's time. To. LIMIT BREAK!!!
If you're new to Final Fantasy, a Limit Break [or LB] is generally a strong move used by a character to do a lot of damage. If you are the DPS at least. This is a multi-sectioned bar that fills gradually as the party attacks, and a Limit Break can only be used if at least one of the sections is full. For most encounters you might only get one or two sections, but many bosses will get three. The more sections full when you use the attack, the stronger it will be.
And most critically, the Limit Break is party shared [not the case in most FF games], which means if one player uses it, it has been used for everyone else too. This is why it's important for the LB to be used strategically, particularly for higher level dungeons/trials/raids.
On top of that, the LB move changes depending on your DPS Type, and how many bars are full. The Limit Break Three [or LB3] in particular is the strongest and it's attack animation is unique for every single DPS class. But the inherent way the LB attacks function is the same for each group:
Melee- a single target, hard hitting attack
Ranged- a line AOE that will hit multiple enemies
Casters- a circle AOE that will hit multiple enemies
As a general rule the Melee DPS is the one who uses the LB attack on a Boss. This is not favoritism, but rather because the Melee LB attacks do the most damage to a single target. So when you are fighting a single enemy, the party will expect the Melee to use the LB. You could do this at the start of the fight if the bars are full, or wait near the end to finish the boss with it if you prefer. If there are no Melee DPS in the party: the next most powerful LB attacks belong to the Ranged group, then the Casters.
As you get more familiar with fights, you will note there may be exceptions to the Melee LB Rule! Sometimes it's more strategic to do a Ranged LB on a certain phase of the fight. Or maybe you guys are fighting some mobs and it will save time if a Caster uses an LB on them so you can move along. There can also be situational exceptions where you don't want the DPS to LB at all! If a raid isn't going well, you might save the LB3 so that the Healer can use it instead for a full party raise! And there are a couple instances where the Tank might need an LB3 to shield the party from a boss attack that may otherwise wipe the group.
General DPS Etiquette
Dungeons & General Tips
If you notice the Tank run into battle without their Tank stance, remind them to put it on! A lot of times the game will turn off their stance when they enter a new duty and they might forget to stance up again because of it.
On a similar note, remember how you are in the field, the name of the enemies you attack change color when they are aggressive towards you? You can use that cue to spot when the Tank has successfully engaged all the enemies, making it safe for you to attack after with no worry of repercussion!
Leave the AOE attacks for the enemy groups. When you face a single enemy or a Boss, use your single target attacks. They are much stronger than your AOEs, so they are worth more in the long run when you fight a single target.
When the enemy is doing a visible AOE move, usually visible on the ground and in orange, that area is dangerous only when it is orange. Yes, even if the attack animation is still going. So you can move back into that into that space immediately after it stops being indicated on the ground! More time for attacking! [There are like...maybe two exceptions to this in main game lol you'll remember when they happen. The party will likely warn you even!]
Ranged guys! You have a really fun move called Peloton that makes everyone in your party run faster [when you're not in combat]. Everybody likes it when you use this :D
Ranged and Casters, be mindful of your position relative to your Healer. Their heal moves only go out so far, so if you're on the other end of the battlefield, they won't be able to hit you with their AOE Heal Skills!
SMN and RDM, you guys are in the unique position of being able to Resurrect [Rez/Res] fallen players like your Healers can! For SMN this is called Resurrect and for RDM it is Verraise. This can be extremely helpful if the Healer has already used their Swiftcast to Res someone else or is otherwise occupied. Or dead. RDM specifically, is able to spam this skill quickly by virtue of its Dual Cast mechanic. You can use a fast spell [like jolt], and then be able to cast Verraise again instantly!
BRDs don't forget about Wardens Paean! Like the Healers Esuna skill it picks one status to remove at random, but unlike Esuna the cool down is much longer. Since the healer will likely prioritize themselves or the Tank first, if the whole party has been hit with a status effect, a good bet is to use it on yourself or the other DPS! Or maybe if the Tank has multiple status effects on them, use it on them so the Healer has one less thing to worry about!
Every so often you'll encounter a Boss that is charging a party wiping attack. For the most part [again some of the older side content is not up to date with the new indicators] you can tell this is happening when a completely different looking progress bar appears on the screen. It typically has a silver frame and fills up at snails pace compared to the usual one. This is the DPS check and it is your time to shine! Usually the Boss themselves is not the target in this case, but something else on the field. Whatever it is, it's your job to crank up the damage and turn it to dust before it does the same to you!
If you ever see a player get marked by another player with an icon [they are by default a white icon hovering over the character, either a number or a shape] usually this is to indicate this player knows the fight very well, and to follow them! This is often used in more chaotic trials or if the party has wiped a few times, to help the newer players know where to go to avoid dying. Not all players know how to do this though [or there's not enough time], and they might just start jumping in place on the safe spot, so look for that too! XD
DO NOT run in front of the tank, wait for them to pull the aggro first. Despite what the Duty Support/Trust systems would suggest, DPS do not lead the charge, because you would die in 5 seconds. This doesn't happen in those settings because the Tank is programmed to be glued to your ass. Please wait for your Tank!
DO NOT PULL FOR THE TANK. I know it seems like I am the same point twice, but I am this time referring to purposefully running ahead of the tank to pull enemies back to them. Please do not do this. How many enemies are being fought at one time is a decision that must be balanced between the skills and comfort level of the Tank and the Healer. You should not be deciding this for them!
Raids
When you are in a Normal Raid, the party becomes an 8 player team, and for the most part the same rules apply as when you're in a Dungeon or Trial. Even the use of the LB. But when you are in an Alliance raid, you are joined by two additional 8 player teams. This makes battles chaotic and fun, so there are some extra things to keep in mind:
Any party buffs you have or can give to other players will not be given to the other Alliances, they will only reach your own Alliance. This includes AOE Healing.
HOWEVER, players of other Alliances can be healed or rezzed if directly targeted when using the skill.
The LB is shared only with your Alliance. This means each alliance will have its own LB bar. Typically it is in the Raids that you want to keep an eye on how your team is doing before using the LB. If half your party is down, consider letting a Healer do it. But if you're the last man, may as well go for it!
For the most part Raids [at least not the regular difficulty ones] do not have DPS specific mechanics to watch out for like they have for Tanks and Healers. But the Raids are very diverse and many of them have unique mechanics, plenty of which may require the DPS to handle. And there are lots of online tutorials on dungeons and raids to help you make sense of them!
NOW GO! AND DEMOLISH YOUR ENEMIES >:3c

Can I tell you guys about The Timeline now?
Tumblr media
This, is the timeline of my personal Dragon Age Canon. From 9:00 to 9:50 Dragon. I also included star signs for our favorite ferals It's got some spoilers for basic non quantum events.
Tumblr media
I searched through lore, I hunted through texts, I got as close to and pinned down canonical dates and birthdays for this fucker. Please look at this monster
Tumblr media
This is my work in progress for the rest of my life. Slowly documenting every. single. major. event. over the 50 years of Dragon age...day by day. Every cell? is 24 hours. The months are color coded on the left, the years are listed at the top. You can check out the THREE PAGES of timeline for Dragon Age here because I've got to start plotting the Veilguard lore into it as well. Keeping in mind this is MY playthrough lore, but it's also canon compliant in regards to the Companions and major historical evets in Thedas. And here is the big day to day Fifty (50) year span of Dragon Age I might be crazy, but I am free (I worked on this every day for three weeks with little breaks in between to celebrate Veilguard coming out soon and now I've got to go into the codex and start plotting things into the graph) OH Warden: Aegis Surana Hawke: Elias Hawke Inquisitor: Liora Lavellan Main Title for the AU is What the World Asks of It's Children This is a Dorian centric world, because that's what inspired this monster, my Dorian has daughters AU - but its grown far beyond.. The major piece of this, is looking at the world of Thedas and the plot through the lens of "how many children can I give these people?" where I modify plot here and there to make this AU focused on how our beloved characters would raise children, or be raised as children. For Dorian, his main two pltos are 'A Girl Named Dragon' and 'The Ghost of a Girl' in which I somehow canonically predicted Taash as a companion about seven years before Veilguard came out. (when I tell you i fucking left my body..) For Hawke, I explore a world where Hawke is older than the twins by ten years, as in they go into the DA 2 universe as a pair of eleven year olds. Hawke in this life is a chronically disabled sex worker turned Champion. I adore him and his sad eyes. I'm currently in the middle of adding Lore for Aegis, and began replaying her run to get more details!!!!

Darius Maxim
Alias: The Red Warden Powers: Chaos Magic, Reality Manipulation, Telekinesis, Telepathy
Backstory:
Darius Maxim was born in a small, war-torn village, caught between two warring factions. His childhood was far from peaceful. At a young age, he and his twin brother, Lucas, witnessed the brutal destruction of their home during an attack. Their parents were killed in front of them, and in the chaos, Darius’s latent powers began to awaken, manifesting in a violent outburst of raw, uncontrollable energy.
Separated from his brother in the aftermath, Darius was taken in by a secretive organization known as the Aegis. This group experimented on young children, unlocking latent powers to create powerful weapons. Darius’s abilities, rooted in ancient Chaos Magic, proved to be far more potent than anyone had anticipated. The Aegis forced him to harness his powers, teaching him to bend reality itself and manipulate the world around him with a mere thought.
As Darius grew older, his powers became almost god-like, but the experiments left him mentally scarred and emotionally volatile. The organization used his pain and trauma to control him, pushing him to carry out dangerous missions under their command. All the while, Darius longed to find his lost brother, Lucas, whom he believed was still alive.
One day, during a mission, Darius discovered the truth about Aegis—they had orchestrated the attack on his village, using the tragedy to manipulate and mold him into their weapon. Enraged by the betrayal, Darius unleashed the full extent of his powers, wiping out the entire facility and its inhabitants.
Now free, Darius took on the mantle of The Red Warden, vowing to destroy anyone who sought to exploit others as he had been. However, his fragile grip on reality and his unchecked magic made him a dangerous figure. He became both a hero and a villain in the eyes of the world, his actions often driven by his tortured past and the quest to reunite with Lucas.
Darius struggles with the balance between his immense power and his desire for redemption. His journey is one of self-discovery, constantly teetering between vengeance and hope, as he seeks to rewrite his tragic past and reclaim the life he was never allowed to have.

Since my favorite color is green, let's hear about the powers of the turtle (I'm really curious about the power it gives to an avatar)
Ah, the good ol Turtle of Protection. Let's dive into it, shall we?

As always, we start with the first, Nino Lahiffe from Miraculous AU as Carapace. His lesser power is the same as the show with shield generation, but his greater power is invincibility. Short, sweet, and simple.

Greater Power: Steadfast

Which now brings me to the other turtle, Bridgette Cheng as Aegis. As a holder, her only power would have been shield generation, however, she is an avatar, so she gets so much more. Before Avatar form is achieved, she can generate shields, is immune to all physical damage and ailments, can create her own fortifications, and is hyper evasive. With Avatar form, she unlocks the ability to counter any and all attacks whether they be magic or physical as well as generate her own decoys of herself or other people.

Gabriel Agreste takes up the turtle's shield in Paradise as Alexiares. And, after mulling over this a bit, Gabriel will have the turtle Shel-ter, but we're upping the power. The shields are able to protect against anything and keep the people and things they're guarding completely safe from whatever threat. The only thing capable of destroying his shields are the black cat's Cataclysm.
This includes (but is not limited to) an application where Alexiares is able to completely shield himself in a mobile, personal shield that would safeguard him from all enemies and powers except the black cat. It would essentially make him the perfect warrior that cannot be harmed or manipulated, until the black cat comes along.

Socqueline makes her debut as the turtle heir in Court of Miracles. She is Midborn and her powers include:
Shield Generation
Fortification Generation

Chloe as Mariana in Siren's Song. And, to add to the song based powers, we'll make it so long as she sings, those she picks are safeguarded from all harm.

Socqueline returns as Warden in All That Remained. Her power, rather simple, is shield generation.
