Me and my gf of 4 years broke up recently and the last few months, as things got worse, I was writing really well. You know that Siken tweet about the vocabulary of loss being the dictionary? But now that we've finally broken up I cant write anything.
I've always used writing to process things - I need to write stuff, to sound it out, to see if thats how I feel. I don't know what's going on. I assume I'm just not feeling my feelings but I don't know how to do it.
I'm sure I'll be fine, this is not an SOS, but do you have any tips? It feels like Im stuck and its frustrating.
Love ur blog and your kind words, stay safe, have fun, X
I'm really, really sorry about your breakup anon, and I'm sorry too that you're going through such a frustrating an difficult time in the wake of it all. Someone asked about writer's block a while back which I answered here, though I don't know how much of it will help in this particular situation.
I think it's interesting that you make a distinction between processing your feelings and actually feeling them--why are they different? do you think you're removed from your feelings when you're writing to process them? And if so, is writing in order to process something actually putting you in touch with the real, raw emotion or simply breaking it down without fully acknowledging and being present with those feelings?
I ask because I'm also someone who needs to write and sound my feelings out sometimes, but I've found I'm also someone who runs a deep risk of intellectualising my feelings when I do write about them--writing, even when processing, happens at a distance for me and in some ways I've found it's more an escape than a confrontation; my feelings, when I write about them (and I rarely do it because of this, and other reasons), turn into a narrative that circumvents the simple acknowledgement of "x happened. I feel y," and moving on. I'm not saying that this is you, but as someone who often has difficulty feeling my feelings, even through personal writing, it may be worth asking if your writing, much as it helps you process, might also be a way of avoiding a necessary confrontation with your emotions and just sitting with them, before writing about them. As I said, feeling my feelings is something I struggle with, but a dear friend shared this chart which has done wonders for me, so maybe it can help you, too (I hope)
I think it's also important to acknowledge that 4 years is a long, long time to be with someone and then no longer be with them. And if things, as you said, were particularly bad in the past few months before it happened, it could simply be that you, your mind, needs a period of stillness and recovery to full come to terms with what has happened. You have to let the reality of it all settle in, and maybe you cannot write as you used to right now because that settling hasn't fully happened yet; some things don't need to be analysed in the moment--they simply need an acknowledgement and that alone is enough to give some breathing space. I don't know if any of this will help you, anon, but I sincerely hope you can take something from it. I hope in time you are able to come back to yourself in the healthiest way for you 💗

i think the thing the mountain goats writes better than anyone else is yearning. like. not even always romantic yearning but just the feeling of having something and wanting something completely different. i think the entire going to series is just about want
like. going to dallas is about jenny wanting to be forgotten. going to georgia is about the narrator wanting to see someone that’s no longer in their life at any cost. going to kansas is about wanting someone who just left
which is like. why songs that have such bizarre premises become so relatable. you know what it feels like to want something you can’t have. you know what it’s like to feel, deep down in your bones, that you need something you can’t have
it’s like that richard silken tweet. if you have something, you don’t need a word for it, but the vocabulary of loss is the dictionary
not really sure where i’m going with this. i think it’s just incredible to have a band that really understands that feeling, and is so good at communicating it

There is no dictionary for grieving. No word for the crushing weight of absence, no word for the instant of disbelief in the morning just after you wake, or for the fatigue beyond exhaustion that hollows out the bones. In Macbeth, Shakespeare writes, “Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak knits up the o-er wrought heart and bids it break,” My grief was unspeakable. I lacked the vocabulary.
When well-meaning people asked how I was doing, I lied. “Fine,” I’d say. It was too hard to explain otherwise.
Though no one would know but me, a walk through my house is a gallery of my losses, but also of what remains, the imprint of love these people left on me, a palimpsest. These secret gestures bring me comfort.
These symbols are how I give my sorrow words.

PROTO-LANGUAGE¹
By Patrick C. Ryan

The Proto-Language is a hypothetically reconstructed language based on the
comparison of attested speech.

The Proto-Religion is a hypothetically reconstructed religion based on the comparison of attested beliefs.

The Proto-Language was spoken by human beings at a time (100K BPE) before humanity dispersed from some central point over the earth (presumably Eastern Africa); and ethnic diversification began.
The underlying premise of these essays is that
ALL human languages derive from a single ancient source:
the Proto-Language.
Several files, which constitute short essays relating specific languages and language families to the Proto-Language and Indo-European are available for viewing or download as regular .HTM(L) files.
The Indo-European entries in some of the essays have been given without English glosses to encourage readers to fully explore the semantic ranges contained under entries for the roots in dictionaries like
Pokorny, Julius. 1959. Indogermanisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch
For casually interested readers, an excellent and inexpensive source of valuable information is:
Morris, William (ed.). 1992. The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language. Indo-European and the Indo-Europeans by Calvert Watkins (pp. 1496-1502); Indo-European Roots (pp. 1505-1550). Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, which can be easily purchased (for $31.50 + shipping) from Amazon.com by simply pressing on the icon to the left.
Indo-European cognates are cited to demonstrate that even though intermediate proto-languages may not yet have been reconstructed (and taxonomies elaborated), (proto-)languages that are currently considered to be unrelated can be shown to ultimately be related when both are viewed in the context of the Proto-Language.
Indo-European roots therefore are intended as a control to demonstrate that the reconstructed Proto-Language roots have not been "designed" to correlate only with the vocabulary of the language(-family) under investigation.
Indo-European citations are not intended to suggest a closer genetic relationship of the language(-family) under discussion with Indo-European than with any other language(-family)!
This is a controversial theory that is not accepted by most experts — at least, at the present time.
The major objection is:
that a "proto-language" cannot be reconstructed.
Because of observed rates of vocabulary loss in historical languages (lexico-statistics), present-day languages 'should have been unable to retain' earlier vocabulary items because of the involved long periods of time (during which, presumably, vocabulary loss occurred at a rate similar to that observed historically), an inference from glottochronology. R. L. Trask has addressed related misuses of glotto-chronology and lexico-statistics.
A concept which is useful here is punctuated equilibrium, which suggests that long periods of "no change", punctuated by short periods of "radical change".
Some linguists have made invalid inferences from "modern" circumstances that exclude a priori the possibility of ancient language reconstruction. A. Vovin has discussed related issues. In my opinion, ethnic and linguistic stability in pre-agricultural societies did not permit the dramatic rate of vocabulary replacement observed more recently.
The proof is in the Comparison Studies presented below. If these studies are able to show cognates among languages now considered to be unrelated --- displaying regular sound and semantic correspondences, theoretical objections must retreat before plainly demonstrated facts.
The reader will be the judge of whether the Comparison Studies have, indeed, accomplished those objectives.
Any critique, positive or negative, will be welcomed.
To validate this theory will take the collaboration of experts from many linguistic backgrounds to reconstruct the taxonomy and intermediate proto-languages, which will ratify the conclusions reached from language-to-language comparison.
Files on Afrasian (Egyptian and Arabic), Altaic, Basque, Beng (Southern Mandé), Japanese, Mon/Hmong, (Sino-)Tibetan, Sumerian, and Uralic are accessible below, I have completed similar essays on Hurrian, and Nama (Khoisan); they will be added as they are converted to .HTM(L) format. Studies that have been begun preliminarily include Blackfoot (Algonquian), Mayan and Hunzib (Tsezic-Daghestan-East Caucasian).
I am hoping that others will want to collaborate in this effort with essays on (proto-)languages in their individual fields of study.

All You Need To Learn Aperture And Depth-of-field
With the essentials out of the method, let's dig into a few of the more fascinating elements of aperture, and we will start with how it's determined. Ever went back to doubt the strange, relatively random nature of the f-stop numbers? f/1.8, f/2, f2.8, f/11, f/16, there appears no rhyme nor reason to them.
Something we do need to know about f stops is diffraction. This is another reasonably complicated subject but one to be conscious of as it can impact our image quality.
Understanding Aperture (And How To Use It)
The smaller sized the aperture, the broader they expanded. That, in turn, can trigger light waves to hinder each other resulting in a small but in some cases perceivable loss of image quality. The diffraction limitation or point where diffraction can end up being a concern is defined by sensing unit size, pixel density, and aperture.
It is controlled by a series of thin, overlapping blades that can open and close to control the amount of light passing. Those blades can have straight edges or more rounded edges, and this, in turn, can affect the method the bokeh appears. The number of blades in the lens likewise affects how the out-of-focus regions look.
What Is Aperture? Understanding Aperture In Photography
The rounder the actual diaphragm, the more pleasing the bokeh. That implies lenses with the best variety of curved blades will provide the very best outcomes. That "best number" is usually regarded to be around 9. The aperture is much more intriguing than simply the amount of light reaching your sensing unit.

Whether you enjoy automobiles for the speed, the looks, or the souped-up adjustments, car photography can put you in the pits with lovely machines and the similar people who love them.
What Is Aperture? An Introduction To Aperture In Photography
If you have not determined completely what is aperture in photography, this short article is for you. A beginning professional photographer has a lot of new terms to infiltrate his/her vocabulary. Some of them can be challenging to comprehend, especially when they're connected with other, more technical terms like "f-stop".
Everything You Need To Know About Aperture In Photography
When you're done reading this post, you ought to know precisely what it indicates, why it is necessary and how to use it efficiently. So, what is the aperture of an electronic camera? Like the majority of photographic terms, the basic camera aperture definition of this word is easy. If you look it up in the Oxford English Dictionary to describe aperture, you'll find the very first definition is "An opening, hole, or gap."
We can even find out from that very same page that, to a professional photographer, it implies "A space through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, particularly the variable opening by which light passes to go into the video camera." To help you navigate the setting, all you need to learn about the technical building and construction of the aperture is that it is the opening in the lens that lets light into the sensing unit.

The aperture in a lens is almost like its student, which can be adjusted by hand based on the situation at hand. The worths of this specification can throw a novice photographer into a stupor, due to the fact that the lower the number, the larger the open aperture. Now we understand a little bit about aperture definition in photography.
All You Need To Know About Aperture
The size of the aperture, integrated with the length of time the shutter is open, identifies the reliable amount of light that's enabled to strike the image recording medium. Aperture size and shutter speed are two of the three consider the "Exposure Triangle", a formula that can be utilized to the exposure of an image.
In some cases you will just have to utilize a quicker shutter speed. There's another important function of the adjustable aperture result, and we'll cover that in a minute. Initially, let's make certain you understand aperture size.
What Is Aperture? An Introduction To Aperture In Photography
You do not have to understand the actual aperture size to use this aspect of direct exposure successfully. It is necessary to know the idea, to understand direct exposure as well as the next term we're going to check out. The aperture size also manages the depth of field and sharpness of an image.
.
Aperture & Depth Of Field
The aperture system in the lens that enables basically light to come in is formed of a series of nontransparent "blades". When the blades are open, your video camera sensor will record more light, whereas as the blades gradually close, less light will strike your sensor. In a comparable way to our eyes, because it works like the human pupils: the broader they are, the more light will pass through and vice versa.
Big apertures are also called quick apertures considering that they permit you to decrease the direct exposure time, and small apertures are likewise called sluggish apertures, given that they enable you to increase the shutter speed. Depending on what you want to record, there are certain circumstances where you should not alter your ISO and shutter speed; aperture will be the secret to an appropriate direct exposure.
Camera Basics: What Is Aperture?
According to the physics laws in optics, you'll have the ability to catch, meaning more areas of your images will be out of focus and less sharp. Conversely, you'll see in your image, meaning a bigger proportion of the image will be in focus.
The same thing happens when you set a small aperture. Because case, there is a phenomenon associated to aperture in photography which is an optical result that results in poorer quality throughout the image. You can see this phenomenon as you begin closing the aperture above f/16 worths.
All You Need To Know About Aperture
To calculate this sweet spot, roughly move two to three F-stop values from the maximum aperture of your lens. For example, if the maximum aperture in your lens is f/4, this would be between f/8 and f/11/.
Before digital photography, the aperture was manually set on the lens by picking the specific F-value. This changed in digital cams today. There are still some manual lenses that require you to set the aperture by hand, however all the electronic lenses that work with your digital video camera will allow you to quickly select your aperture.
What Is Aperture? An Introduction To Aperture In Photography
Beyond all the that we've already seen, there are other fascinating adverse effects of utilizing different apertures in some light circumstances. To/sunburst or a moonstar, you'll need to have high F-Stop values from f/16 to the smallest aperture on your lens. That method, the sun/moon beams will be sharper. This also depends on the variety of blades on the aperture of your lens.
All You Need To Know About Aperture
What is aperture in photography and how does it affect the way our image looks? Aperture is the most important pillar of the direct exposure triangle after shutter speed and ISO, so it's crucial you comprehend it! Terms like f-stops and depth of field may daunt beginner professional photographers, but they're truly not that made complex.
Smaller sized aperture = darker image. EASY! Using the aperture to manage the amount of light that comes through your lens is often an imaginative option you make. Other times you might be forced to choose a particular aperture based upon the offered light you have in your scene.

Camera Basics: What Is Aperture?
With the basics out of the way, let's look into a few of the more intriguing aspects of aperture, and we will begin with how it's measured. Ever stepped back to doubt the odd, seemingly random nature of the f-stop numbers? f/1.8, f/2, f2.8, f/11, f/16, there seems no rhyme nor factor to them.
One thing we do require to understand about f stops is diffraction. This is another relatively complex topic however one to be knowledgeable about as it can impact our image quality.
Aperture In Photography
The smaller the aperture, the wider they expanded. That, in turn, can cause light waves to interfere with each other causing a small but sometimes perceivable loss of image quality. The diffraction limitation or point where diffraction can become a concern is defined by sensing unit size, pixel density, and aperture.
It is controlled by a series of thin, overlapping blades that can open and near manage the quantity of light death. Those blades can have straight edges or more rounded edges, and this, in turn, can impact the way the bokeh appears. The variety of blades in the lens also impacts how the out-of-focus regions look.
All You Need To Know About Aperture
The rounder the real diaphragm, the more pleasing the bokeh. That suggests lenses with the right variety of curved blades will give the best outcomes. That "right number" is typically regarded to be around 9. The aperture is a lot more fascinating than simply the amount of light reaching your sensor.
Whether you enjoy automobiles for the speed, the appearances, or the souped-up adjustments, car photography can put you in the pits with gorgeous machines and the similar people who like them.

If you have not determined perfectly what is aperture in photography, this post is for you. A starting photographer has a lot of new terms to work into his/her vocabulary. A few of them can be tough to grasp, specifically when they're connected with other, more technical terms like "f-stop".
What Is Aperture?
When you're done reading this post, you need to know exactly what it indicates, why it is very important and how to utilize it effectively. So, what is the aperture of a cam? Like many photographic terms, the standard video camera aperture meaning of this word is easy. If you look it up in the Oxford English Dictionary to discuss aperture, you'll discover the first definition is "An opening, hole, or gap."
We can even learn from that exact same page that, to a photographer, it implies "An area through which light passes in an optical or photographic instrument, specifically the variable opening by which light passes to enter the video camera." To help you navigate the setting, all you require to understand about the technical construction of the aperture is that it is the opening in the lens that lets light into the sensing unit.
The aperture in a lens is almost like its pupil, which can be changed manually based on the situation at hand. The values of this criterion can toss a novice professional photographer into a stupor, because the lower the number, the larger the open aperture. Now we understand a bit about aperture meaning in photography.
What Is Aperture In Photography?
The size of the aperture, integrated with the length of time the shutter is open, determines the efficient quantity of light that's permitted to strike the image recording medium. Aperture size and shutter speed are two of the three consider the "Direct exposure Triangle", a formula that can be utilized to the direct exposure of an image.
In some cases you will just need to use a faster shutter speed. There's another crucial function of the adjustable aperture impact, and we'll cover that in a moment. First, let's ensure you understand aperture size.
Understanding Aperture In Photography
You do not have to know the real aperture size to utilize this element of direct exposure successfully. It is essential to know the concept, to comprehend direct exposure along with the next term we're going to check out. The aperture size likewise controls the depth of field and sharpness of an image.

All You Need To Learn Aperture And Depth-of-field
The aperture system in the lens that allows more or less light to come in is formed of a series of opaque "blades". When the blades are open, your camera sensing unit will catch more light, whereas as the blades progressively close, less light will strike your sensing unit. In a comparable method to our eyes, considering that it works like the human students: the wider they are, the more light will go through and vice versa.
Large apertures are also known as quick apertures because they enable you to decrease the exposure time, and little apertures are likewise understood as slow apertures, because they enable you to increase the shutter speed. Depending upon what you want to capture, there are specific circumstances where you should not alter your ISO and shutter speed; aperture will be the key to a proper direct exposure.
Ultimate Guide To The Camera Aperture And Depth Of Field
According to the physics laws in optics, you'll have the ability to record, indicating more locations of your images will run out focus and less sharp. On the other hand, you'll see in your image, meaning a larger percentage of the image will remain in focus.
The same thing happens when you set a small aperture. Because case, there is a phenomenon associated to aperture in photography which is an optical effect that results in poorer quality throughout the image. You can see this phenomenon as you begin closing the aperture above f/16 worths.
What Is Aperture In Photography: Everything You Need To Know
To determine this sweet area, roughly move 2 to 3 F-stop worths from the maximum aperture of your lens. For instance, if the optimum aperture in your lens is f/4, this would be between f/8 and f/11/.
Prior to digital photography, the aperture was by hand set on the lens by picking the particular F-value. This altered in digital video cameras today. There are still some manual lenses that require you to set the aperture manually, but all the electronic lenses that are compatible with your digital cam will permit you to quickly select your aperture.
All You Need To Learn Aperture And Depth-of-field
Beyond all the that we've currently seen, there are other fascinating side impacts of utilizing different apertures in some light situations. To/sunburst or a moonstar, you'll need to have high F-Stop values from f/16 to the smallest aperture on your lens. That method, the sun/moon beams will be sharper. This likewise depends upon the variety of blades on the aperture of your lens.
What Is Aperture? An Introduction To Aperture In Photography
What is aperture in photography and how does it affect the way our picture looks? Aperture is the most essential pillar of the exposure triangle after shutter speed and ISO, so it's essential you comprehend it! Terms like f-stops and depth of field may frighten newbie professional photographers, but they're truly not that complicated.
