Postcards from Snagglepuss

So Braham Pie Day is forthcoming, and--

Over coffee the other night in our motorhome:

HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: Just a reminder, Snag--Friday's Pie Day. SNAGGLEPUSS: Thanks for the reminder, aide-memoire even! HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: And we do have a little get-together and convocation on Thursday evening with the rest of the crew, to remind folks of our scheduling, the meet-and-greets, as well as when the pie entries have to be ready for judging. SNAGGLEPUSS: So what sort of pie have we to enter? HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: Myself ... Clementine plans to enter, what else, a huckleberry pie. SNAGGLEPUSS: Hopefully with tapioca added. They say such adds colour and juiciness, and reduces boilover. HUCKLEBERRY HOUND: Yourself? SNAGGLEPUSS: For this master of sophistication, a grasshopper pie.

And as if things couldn't get more interesting, Clementine came along in that Southern sweetness of charm, sharing some of her legendary (as she liked explaining things) huckleberry pie. Not to mention getting some ice cream as well to make it a little more tasty.

"Just thought you boys might like to sample my huckleberry pie ahead of the Pie Day competition on Friday," Clementine explained. Which, even if the coffee was of the instant sort, managed to go down rather well. "Still," I had to acknowledge, "we shouldn't try to overdo it in the pie department, Huck, especially with some of our characters having entries."

"And did I mention where Kitty Jo from the Cattanooga Cats was entering her take on that beloved Southern dessert known as chess pie in the competition?" Huck remarked. Clementine admitted that she may have tried Kitty Jo's variant on custard pie with cornmeal and vinegar once during a chance visit, finding it "interesting," though a little unafmiliar.

"And need we forget," added I as things crept well into the night, "that our characters will be in a 'meet-and-greet' mode as well along Main Street through the day?"

"Rather interesting you should remind me of that," Huck noted.

"Oh," added I, "did I mention where The Banana Splits have their take on banana creme pie entered, as in one with crumbled vanilla wafers mixed into the pudding?"

"You just had to bring in The Banana Splits there!" remarked Huck off-handedly. "But just be thankful that they're trying to reclaim their good name after that awful horror-film trashing!"

I couldn't have concurred more as another mug of coffee was prepared, recognising that after Pie Day would be the Minnesota State Fair towards the end of August.
