     The first time it happened, it wasn't intentional on Kakashi's part. He respects clan traditions and way of life, he would never do anything to dishonor or oppose any of it. He's simply a man of his own making, with his own hobbies that have become habit to the point he's not sure he could change even if he tried. None of it was against rules, just certainly lifestyle choices the Uchiha... didn't do.

     The first time he'd brought the ninken out for a walk in the compound he'd definitely gotten stares. When he made it a daily routine and saw 'the neighbors' gossiping he'd just wave. It wasn't unusual for him to have one armful of dogs, and the other balancing groceries while also trying to read a book in his hand. He didn't realize the gossip made it back to Itachi until he mentions it once, a pleased look in his eye and a genuine laugh curling on his lips. Any thought of apologizing left Kakashi's mind instantly.

     It became an intentional game between them, after that. Kakashi putting his years of mission breakdown and analysis to work on figure out the best way to crawl under the clan’s skin. Kakashi never knew Itachi had this side to him, one that delighted in petty acts of mild vengeance and playing oblivious to annoy family. It was adorable. The best part was Kakashi didn't have to try very hard, especially not around Itachi’s father.

     Make out Paradise left out on a coffee table. Hand drawn art from Sasuke displayed proudly on the mantel. Magnets on the fridge in the shape of dogs and throwing stars. Once, entirely acting but in the most genuine voice, asked Itachi's father when he came to visit if the "mangekyou I've heard so much about is a type of manga, and how do I read it?"

     It was an impressive act of control on both Itachi’s and his father's part, the former trying to keep in the laughter and the latter to not burst a blood vessel. Sasuke just tilting his head between them all, their mother smiling knowingly.

     All in all, it wasn’t the worst idea either of them had come up with, Kakashi beaming later with idiotic pride. And after the family had left, having Itachi bracing a arm against Kakashi to hold himself up from the laughter, Kakashi savored the private moment of glee. 

     Not the worst at all.
