My July Reads Ranked
I don't see myself finishing a book in the next two days.
Prince's Gambit by C.S. Pacat: It's one of the best books I've ever read.
King's Rising by C.S. Pacat: It's my cousin, Charls!
Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat
The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: This took me by surprise, I did not expect to love this as much as I did. I HATED Killian at the beginning of this book, and by the end of it, all I could do was keep trying to picture his thighs. It was such a fun time. My only gripe with this book was the use of the word cream, but other that, super fun book.
His Curvy Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: This is the 4th book in this series, and I ended up reading all 5. This was pretty fun, but it didn't quite hit the same as the 1st book.
11/22/63 by Stephen King: I think if my expectations had been lower going into this book, I would have liked it more. But I don't regret reading it.
Barbarian's Rescue by Ruby Dixon: Not my favorite Barbarian book, but I still had a good time.
The Lone Wolf's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: This was the 3rd in the series, and I didn't like it. But I liked it more than others. Some of the situations and themes were not it for me. It felt like, after the 2nd book, she started writing for a different audience.
Love Potion for the Alpha by Alice Coldbreath: I read a lot of werewolf smut this month, and this was short and fun. This book is funny.
The Heir Apparent's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: The love interests had little to no chemistry; their convos were kind of weird.
The Stone Wolf's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: It felt like Wells wanted to write a period piece in the modern world she had already built. It didn't hit for me.
Then, Earth Swallowed Ocean by Shiloh Sloane: I did not like this book, and that's fine. I have an entire shelf and kindle collection dedicated to books I don't like because it's as important as books I do like. It gives me insight into myself, and I like to pick apart everything I read. It's also fun to rant about books I don't like.
I learned this month, that I really like paranormal romances based on fated mates, so next month I'm going to do a fated mate Merman book. I like fantasy books with romance, but I do like political intrigue as well, so I'll be reading The Stolen Heir duology by Holly Black and One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig. I loved the sci-fi elements in 11/22/63, so I'll be reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir because I am so down for an epic sci-fi adventure. I keep trying to read dark romances thinking they'll take, so I'm going to try Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton, but I wouldn't be surprised if I dnfd it.

bfj reading challenge 53
d-494 🩷 day 54 🌷55 pages 🪻the road to the city - natalia ginzburg 🌸chapter 6-15
🌷416 pages 🪻the tyrant alpha's rejected mate - cate c. wells 🌸chapter 1-17
☑ i finished the road to the city. it was kind of quaint. delia as a character was quite flippant to anyone else's needs and wants but her own. detached. it was a decent read, but not one that felt exceptional to me. still, i got along well with the writing style.
Tumblr media
started reading the tyrant alpha's rejected mate at like 12 am this morning and read for a good couple of hours. made a lot of progress. it's...better than i expected and i was considering dnfing it outright in chapter 1 but decided to just go with it. luckily, the writing is good. i enjoy una and a lot of the other side characters, i'm just not the biggest fan of killian lmao. not my taste in mm characters. honestly i think i'm just getting picky with my romance in books. also everything was fast paced at 12-3 am in the morning and now i'm just feeling sluggish and don't want to read more.
edit: i wrote this then finished the book. so.
☑ i finished the tyrant alpha's rejected mate. there are things i liked, but overall it just wasn't for me, i don't think. again, i just didn't like the focus on the romance and that's my own taste.

May books!
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson: a reread, I heard Victor LaValle talking about it on a podcast.
Lone Women by Victor LaValle: awesome! Seriously, very worth the hype. Not as triggery as The Changeling.
My Hero Academia Team Up Missions vols 1-3 by Yoko Akiyama. I get through these so much faster than Vigilantes! They are fun!
My Hero Academia volume 34: so this is the first one I've read where I hadn't seen the anime first. It was super good but a strange experience.
Twilight Out of Focus by Jyanome: Boys at a high school boarding school fall for each other while working on a film project.
The Way of the Househusband by Kousuke Oono: Yakuza guy is retired and instead supports his wife. Takes cooking and shopping and cleaning very seriously.
Seaside Stranger vol 1 &2 by Kanna Kii: boys love, sweet.
Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree: fantasy romance that's surprisingly gentle and sweet. Found family/building a family is a big part of it.
The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate by Cate C. Wells: I still don't know if I liked this one? ABO has so much gender essentialism baked in I find it difficult. Werewolves.

Don't know how to stop being long winded so I'm answering via reply instead of in a comment. But since under smooth brain reads there are "I don't want to work hard to get into a book, a nice regency romance that's like slipping into a bath" kinds of moods and "looking for a fun romp" kinds of moods and "nothing's grabbing me - I need something compulsively readable and maybe off the beaten track" kinds of moods, I wanted to allow for all possibilities. (sorry if you've read them all and/or don't think any of them look good)
Historicals:
Sarah MacLean, if you haven't read her - she's currently on a series of romance novels following a Victorian girl gang that takes down rich, powerful men who abuse their power. First one of that series is Bombshell.
I want to recommend Kleypas if you haven't read her stuff, because I was reading one of the most enjoyable scenes I've read in a while in Chasing Cassandra when I saw your post, but it's hard to find a good entry point for her. It Happened One Autumn may be a good entry point, but it's not one of the ones you reach for to reread like some of her others.
Cat Sebastian: The Queer Principles of Kit Webb (Queer Regency) - cartoon cover, but I wouldn't consider it corporate Memphis Style (I really thought historicals were safe from cartoon covers but even they seem like they're headed in that direction)
I've been checking out the kinds of classic Old School romances I always avoided before, just because some of my favorite authors grew up reading them and I was curious. Julie Garwood's The Secret was fun and drew me in pretty quickly. It's an older book so be prepared for an angelic heroine and extremely boorish men, but it's a fun read. You don't see much Medieval era stuff anymore these days
-Historical queer fantasy romance: a light read, easy to get into, not too much worldbuilding, but I'm not sure I'd call it smooth brain, the Power Unbound Series by Freya Marske. Edwardian era, magical realism
Contemporary:
I don't have a lot of favorite contemporaries - I like them just fine but I tend to forget about them as soon as I read them. What jumps to mind are:
Boyfriend Material, Alexis Hall - hilarious, will make feelings sneak up on you (haven't read the sequels yet, so I can't speak to them) Bad news about the cover though :(
-Contemporaries that won't blow you away but are fun, easy reads: Wolf Gone Wild; Cleat Cute (I forget the authors of each)
And then in my "I can't in good conscience recommend these books to people because I couldn't tell you why I like them and on paper I really wouldn't like them but I find her stuff compulsively readable" category: Cate C Wells. She's most known for her dark romance Run Posy Run, about a legitimate psychopath, and for The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate (which is pretty much what it says on the tin) and I can't stress enough that I don't actually know what I like about these books other than that I think she puts people together in interesting ways. She really makes you kind of hate the heroes first. Short, less sexy than you'd think, but scratches that lizard-brain itch.
Scifi/Fantasy Romance: Extremely Lizard Brain, Little Bit Bonkers, may make you go "what the fuck am I reading and why can't I stop reading it?"
Heart of Blood and Ashes, Milla Vane
Taken by the Horde King, Zoey Draven
Please recommend to me your favorite smooth brain romance books, the only caveats being they cannot have a corporate Memphis style cover or be written by Colleen Hoover

books i read in 2021
i read a total of 290 books in 2021. i wanted to round it up to 300, but other things got in the way, but obviously i can't complain about the final total. one of those was read twice in the same year.
i was unemployed for a big chunk of the year and this is reflected in my reading habits. my most productive months reading-wise were all ones shortly after becoming unemployed in march: i read the most in may and april, with 37 and 32 books read in those months respectively. my least productive month for reading was october, which is the month i started work again. i read 15 books in october, with november having a similar count.
of the books i read, i gave the majority of them a 3 star rating, followed by 4 star. i only read 2 book this year that i rated as 1 star. of the 290 books i read, 259 of them were romance books, which is very similar to the year before. i read 25 mystery/crime novels. the rest were non-fiction or other genres. of the non-romance books, 11 of them had romance as a major subgenre.
in terms of the romance novels, 140 of them were contemporary, followed by 51 historical novels, 34 romantic suspense novels, and 22 paranormal/fantasy romance novels. there were some other subgenres, but not in great number. my most-read trope was enemies-to-lovers, with 53 books containing that trope, followed by forced proximity, friends-to-lovers, boss/employee, and age gap tropes.
i also tracked things outside of genre/tropes. 264 books i read this year were ebooks - only 26 of them were physical books. 279 were first-time reads, 12 were rereads. 287 books were fiction, 3 were non-fiction. 242 were novel-length, 48 were novellas.
i also tracked cover types this year. i was curious because of the current debate in romancelandia about the new wave of cute illustrated covers - i wanted to know how many books i read followed this trend, as there seems to be this general opinion that the illustrated type are "taking over". i was surprised to find that the 'cute' illustrated covers were not in my top 5 cover types by the end of the year. most of the books i read this year - 91 - featured a lone man, followed by the more traditional 'clinch' style covers, of which i read 61. only 23 of the books i read had this new kind of 'cute' illustrated covers.
outside of numbers - generally i feel very satisfied with my reading habits of this year. i read some really good books and i continued to indulge myself in reading things that made me happy. that said, i would like to read a bit wider this year. i'm going to be setting myself a goal to read certain things - i want to read more non-fiction and more physical books, and i want to read more outside of genre romance. but i'm not going to be strict with myself - i got back into reading romance because i was losing enjoyment with reading in general by forcing myself to read in certain genres. i don't want to go back to that, so i'm going to set myself realistic goals, likely based around the numbers for 2021. i'm also going to continue keeping track of all the details above, as i've found it really interesting to see my habits in number-form.
finally, some highlights. books that immediately spring to mind as having been the highlights of my reading year: it happened one summer by tessa bailey, her soul to take by harley laroux, marrying winterborne by lisa kleypas, the amelia peabody series by elizabeth peters, the veronica speedwell series by deanna raybourn, priceless by miranda silver, and you deserve each other by sarah hogle. i also want to mention cate c. wells, who i only read 3 books by but 2 of them were real standout reads if you like darker romance: run posy run and the tyrant alpha's rejected mate.
i've put the full list below. all my 5 star reads are in bold, rereads in italics, non-fiction asterisked.

Title: The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate
Author: Cate C. Wells
Genre: Paranormal Wolf Shifter's Romance
He rejected me, and then he realized I’m the center of his world. Bummer.
Una
I keep my head down. In this backwards pack, females rank low, and my bad leg makes me damaged goods. It doesn’t help that I’ve never shifted. I don’t mind the late twenties single life, though. No one’s paying any attention as I build an illicit farmer’s market empire.
My roomies and I are doing it for ourselves, and if life under Killian Kelly is stifling, at least it’s predictable. We can deal.
But when biology finally kicks in, I lose my mind. I claim our alpha as my mate. And he rejects me in front of the whole pack.
It’s all good. It only hurts when I breathe. I’ll survive. That’s what I do.
Who wants an arrogant jerk for a mate, anyway? I’ve got a business to run.
Killian
To lead this pack out of the dark ages, I’ve had to be hard. Merciless. I don’t flinch, and I don’t make mistakes.
Una Hayes isn’t my mate.
My wolf might have some kind of strange infatuation, but if she were mine, I’d know it. And I can walk away, can’t I?
And if I keep coming back? If she starts living in my head?
I’m the strongest male in five generations. My pack scrambles to do my bidding. I can bring one quiet female back in line. No one can possibly be as stubborn as I am.
There’s no way I’ve ruined the best thing that’s ever happened to me.
I’m the Quarry pack alpha, and Una's not going anywhere.
The Tyrant Alpha’s Rejected Mate is a full-grown shifter romance. No cheating. HEA guaranteed. Intended for adult readers only.
