"Fiona, I have something really important to tell you."
Fiona briefly turns away from her study material to look at her freeloader of a friend.
"Is this actually important, or can it wait untill i'm done with this passage?"
Tsubame springs up from her spot on Fiona's recliner and smiles, knowing that despite her words, Fiona will indulge her anyways.
"It's important."
Fiona suspects the woman might be up to some shenanigans again, call that a learned intuition, but she elects to give her the benefit of doubt.
Perhaps Tsubame really does have something important on her mind.
"You see i've been meaning to say this for... A while now."
Tsubame looks almost bashful as she sais this and Fiona can feel her heart skip a beat. When the woman starts making her way over to her, Fiona wonders if what she thinks (and hopes) is about to happen is actually, finally about to happen.
Her eyes widen when Tsubame reaches out and gently lifts her chin
"I -"
Fiona gulps down saliva as Tsubame leans in, close enough for her to count her eyelashes.
"- really -"
She hesitates for a moment, seemingly at war with herself over something Fiona can't see.
Then, just as Fiona prepares her racing heart for a confession, and their lips are about to touch, Tsubame leans to the side, her cheek brushing Fiona's, to whisper in her ear.
"- want some strawberries for desert today"
With that she pulls back and grins.
Fiona can do nothing more than stare at the little fiend, mouth agape and mind struggling to comprehend what had just transpired.
In front of her, Tsubame dissolves into giggles that quickly turn to laughter.
"Hahahaha look at you~ you actually though i was about to kiss you, you're so red!"
She holds her sides to keep herself steady.
When Fiona realizes she has once again been tricked, she grits her teeth, the blush caused by their previous intimacy turning into one of utter embarrassment.
"You."
Tsubame takes an instinctive step back as a dark aura rapidly fills the room. She is no longer laughing and her gleeful smile has turned into a more uncertain expression.
Perhaps she had pushed her usually stoic friend too far this time.
She jolts as Fiona's icy gaze falls upon her, so very at contrast with the witch's still red cheeks. She can practically hear her grinding her teeth in frustration? Embarrassment? Agony? All emotions Tsubame would usually revel seeing her friend being brought to by her antics, but this time she feared she'd flown too close to the sun.
"Oh come on, it was just a silly goof! No need to get so angry." She tries to justify what she and Fiona both know, has quite possibly just been the breaking of the final straw.
Mush as expected this results in Fiona looking even more furious.
"We can talk about this?" Tsubame chances but is cut off.
"So you can keep messing up my head with more of your sweet nothings? Or are you going to ask me to wait untill your coward heart doesn't have to hide behind charades and false gestures?"
Tsubame winces, as if the accusations physically hurt.
"Tsubame I am so...so... done with you!!" Fiona must be really pissed off if she can't find a more eloquent way to say that.
Then, as if a great thought has struck her mind, the witch ... smiles.
Tsubame has never seen her look so maniacal.
"You know, Tsubame," Fiona puts so much emphasis on her name, that Tsubame inadvertently shivers. "Why don't you live up to your namesake if you're going to be so flighty."
With quick, deliberate steps she marches over to her treasured grimoire and commands it to open to a specific entry.
Before Tsubame has even had the chance to consider escaping, she splashes the woman with a vial of glittery liquid and casts an incantation.
Luckily for Fiona, this entire ordeal was happening in her study, which meant the magic circle required for most incantations was already beautifully engraved on the wooden flooring and was now lighting up under Tsubame's feet.
"Fiona, what are you doing?" The witch ignores Tsubame's growing panic and closes her eyes to erase any chances of wavering.
She tells herself this is what Tsubame deserves after all those times of relentless teasing, and she will not feel any sympathy for the woman.
Once the spell has started taking effect, Tsubame finds herself unable to leave the magic circle, as if cut off by a wall of light. She's screaming useless apologies into the air and begging to be released with tears pricking her eyes but it's no use.
The transformation happens quickly and surprisingly painlessly. It's as if she's being moulded into something completely new by a pair of giant hands. Like if she were one of the sculptures her friend Rei loved creating so much.
A chip here, an elongation there, some adjustments, a gust of wind to blow off the dust and-
She opens her eyes to find the world has grown about six hundred times in size and Fiona is nowhere in sight. (And if you would say she's exaggerating, well... She would reply that she's allowed to, under the circumstances.) It's as if she's coming out of a dream, headed right into another dream. Everything feels so foreign yet so familiar all at the same time, and when she tries to cup her own face and slap herself awake, instead of a pair of hands she is greeted by feathers from a pair of lovely, blue wings.
And instead of a stream of complaints and curses that she intended to unleash, the world is gifted with the beautiful trill of birdsong.
Unbelievable. Fiona had seriously gone through with her threats for once and turned her into an actual barn swallow.
