Then he woke up.

He didn’t die, and Fox’s scattered, foggy mind has a hard time coming to terms with the fact. He blinks groggily into the darkness, body alight in agony, and he has a moment of overwhelming terror. He can’t see - where is he - why can’t he see?

It’s Fox who continues to close his eyes, hoping that he’ll finally march on, only to open his eyes once more and curse the world. Why was it him who wouldn’t die, when there were so many good men who deserved to live more than him. Men like Thorn, who had hope no matter how bad it got, and who’s mangled body had been left for the wildlife to eat. Men like Fives, who had tried so desperately to save everyone, but would never see the fall of the man who had been pulling all the strings.

I have to admit, I had the selfish thoughts of ‘They can’t disband’ ‘They can’t, they’re the only good thing I have in life right now,’ but I’m not a generally selfish person, so that passed quick, I was worried, incredibly worried! I didn’t know these men personally but hearing the circumstances of the lawsuit fueled me with rage, they were being denied basic human rights! From seeing family, treatment for illness, disrespect as artist, payment neglect! Then I heard of fans leaving the fandom for petty reasons and I knew that I couldn’t leave their side, I did, guiltily, distance myself as Baby, if they were to disband for their own personal reasons and this doesn’t go well, I wouldn’t be as hurt by the decision, I checked any news when I could, listened to their songs to feed my desire to see them again, I checked Instagram and Twitter, every time I heard about one of the members being seen somewhere, Daehyuns random appearances, I was happy, they looked sad but also happy, but I was still worried, what did this mean for them?

When it was over, I just hoped that they were given what they deserved and wanted, respect and to not be looked down at, to be treated like a human beings, to be given the money they work fucking hard for! And to not be taken advantage of, because all they wanted to do was to sing, rap and dance, to follow a simple dream but some money hungry, shitty cooperation took advantage of that.

But because I had distance myself during the lawsuit, although still a Baby, I wasn’t on the level before it, while every other Baby was hyping up their comeback for Young, Wild and Free, I was skeptic, was this what they wanted? Are they okay? I don’t care for a comeback! I just want to know if they’re happy and healthy! Why TS? Surely any other label could sign them?

The teasers dropped and I was in love again, it was them, they looked healthy, they looked happy, they looked like them, the six goofy, talented, amazing, individual men that I loved. It had been over a year since they’re last comeback, Zelo had gotten taller, he looked more mature and more adult, Youngjae’s face had lost any trace of his chubbyness from Debut,, Daehyunn looked alot better, Himchan was defiantly happier, Jongup was now a man too out of nowhere? Yongguk seemed better.

He shouldn’t of had to put a ‘hiatus’ on his career when his company shouldn’t of let him get so bad, it wasn’t Yongguks fault and I could blame the company all I wanted, but I just wanted him happy, healthy and doing what he wants with his life without these barriers.

Wake Me Up came and you could say that my ass was owned, yet again. Words can’t really explain how I felt when watching the MV, besides Pride, I was proud, they looked so good, the song sounded just like them and I was glad for having them back. Honeymoon and Hands Up, two comebacks in a short time frame? Ah yes! Victim theory and the loops

Alright, so, lemme tell yall about victim theory and single/double loop learning. So, being abused during developmental stages can really fuck someone up. Most of the time they rise above the pain, basically, they heal properly, and they stay relatively normal. Some people though

Some people don’t heal. It’s not their fault that they don’t heal, or that they let it consume their lives in subconscious ways. That isn’t to say that their actions aren’t their fault, but, they didn’t get asked to be coerced into sex behind the library, or cheated on repeatedly, etc etc.

Now, those people, we’re going to call them Victims for convenience, are self-identified victims. They go through life commonly looking at things with a persecution complex, and commonly split people into one of two groups. The first we are going to call Rescuers. They support the Victim, including their “wrong” behavior. Maybe maladapted is a better word.## Sometimes Rescuers don’t recognize that this maladaptive behavior is really happening, or they try to keep the fire off of their asses.

The second group is called Persecutors or Attackers. Persecutors are people that at best seem to be against the Victim, and at worst are seen to solely exist to persecute the Victim. Oh, it’s an extremely egocentric mindset, if you haven’t noticed. In reality, Persecutors could be trying to uphold some semblance of fairness or order or policy, the persecution could be actually incidental, or the Persecutor could recognize the Persecution Complex and be reacting against it.

Now, Victims will expect special treatment, or the ability to run amok, or they don’t expect to be held accountable for their actions. This is usually unconscious, at least the justification is. See, they have something in their worldview or mindset that allows them to just say “Hey, I was mad, of course I’m going to yell and scream” or “it wasn’t really cheating because I just wanted to make everyone in the situation happy”. This seems completely normal to them, and it’s extremely hard to show them otherwise (We’ll talk more about this in another section).

So, when someone tries to hold a Victim accountable for getting mad and throwing things during the weekly Office Board Meeting, you’d better hold onto your butts, because it’s never pretty. Victims typically lack the ability to self-assess their actions objectively, instead justifying them so that their actions aren’t the ones that are wrong. When their special treatment gets cut off they say “Why are you denying me this basic thing?” or “Why are you trying to get rid of me/get me in trouble/yell at me/ruin my life?” Ironically, in most texts this makes the Victim now the Persecutor and the Persecutor now the Victim- but it’s different because the was-persecutor doesn’t have a persecution complex (which would lead to this zig-zagging back and forth, I would imagine). The Victim will try to turn the tables and will become ruthless and vicious just to remain on top- including filing allegations of sexual misconduct, discrimination, etc etc. They also reveal another duality: They will flip between emotions (Yelling and screaming, then sobbing and saying sorry), like a fish pulling against a line left and right, as a manipulative behavior whose purpose is to shake you up and try to get you to concede. So, if you find yourself recognizing a Victim at work, there’s basically two things you can reasonably do. One: cover your ass, never work alone, cross your Is and dot your Ts, document everything, get human resources involved, and get the victim removed from your situation. Two: Try to tolerate their bullshit, stay on their good side, and never ever ever ever go against them unless there’s an organized effort or you want your life to be over.

Unfortunately, I learned this from a Business Leadership class, and have instead been facing a Victim in my personal life. So there are even fewer things that I can do: Wait. Wait for them to see that they aren’t okay, and try to help them realize what’s wrong with their behavior/mindset/actual brain. (Side note: This really sucks for me because all I can do is hope that they don’t contract pregnancy, STDs, or a minor case of death. I still really love her, I don’t doubt it. But I tried helping her change- she’s happy with who she is, so I can’t do anything.)

So, here we arrive at a juncture, and I’m going to talk about the loop theories. Single- and Double-Loop theory isn’t super common, and I wonder if my professor actually contributed to the original guys’ work because he explains this in a way I couldn’t find online.

So on this handy MSPaint image that I made just now, we have:

Governing values/world view: This is the motivation and guidance behind actions and behaviors. OH YEAH- this is a simplistic look at single actions and not complex systems. World view is the real secret to getting under a Victim’s skin and help them see the light, if you’re brave enough and don’t mind some blood loss.

Behavior/Actions (and I guess strategies): This is what the person is actually doing. Some examples: Getting mad and yelling when things aren’t going their way. Cheating on a loved one. Lying about said cheating. Stealing candy from the candy jar.

Outcome/Results: This is what happens as a direct result of actions. Some examples: The individual is fired. They are scolded for lying. Their partner leaves them. Their partner doesn’t leave, but expresses severe discomfort with the situation. Friends lose trust or leave them. A situation doesn’t go their way. They get escorted out of a walmart at 2:30AM.

So that’s the fancy diagram for S/DL theory. Single loop is common for little kids, immature individuals (like adolescents), but legitimately for low-level decisions whose outcome doesn’t really matter. (So basically if you’re immature enough to not know better or you actually don’t know better) Single-loop learning is also one of the biggest problems when dealing with someone with victim persecution theory. I really like this simple example:

“A little kid knows that he really wants some candy that isn’t really his. He steals some candy when he thinks nobody is looking, and thinks he is clever about it. When he gets caught by his mother, he is scolded. When the scolding is over, he thinks to himself, next time I will be more careful and not be caught.”

In this case, the kid isn’t mature enough to change his worldview directly to understand that he shouldn’t steal candy at all, but perhaps ask for it or try to do chores to deserve it.

Double loop learning takes the worldview into scrutiny when they realize that they fucked up. An example* of this would be:

A spouse realizes she has feelings for an old friend after hanging out with him for a while. After her husband brings up the fact that he isn’t comfortable with the situation, and threatens to leave, she considers why she allowed herself to get close to the friend (Was it a desire for polygamy? A lack of attention from the husband? The need for excitement or drama? A few too many drinks and inhibitions lowered?) That’s double-loop learning, but also the appropriate response here would be to take the proper step against further actions: Does she discuss having an open relationship, does she begin discussion about divorce, does she establish boundaries with her friend and ignore the underlying problem, assuming a problematic friend does she completely block him from her life, does she self-police her actions in the future while focusing on her husband’s concerns**? That’s not for us to judge, but some action would be appropriate.

So, there was: Some (unspecified reason) for actions, action, a consequence of that action. That consequence brought the world view into scrutiny, and -FINDING A FAULT- an effort was made to change the worldview. That’s important: This isn’t a method of manipulation, but rather a way to solve an already problematic situation where one is objectively Wrong.

Bringing persecution/victim theory back into this, there is one way to assist an individual with realizing that they’re the ones fucking up. This first assumes that an individual doesn’t understand why things are going poorly, AND ALSO that they want to find out. The chances of this actually working are probably pretty slim, so, good luck. The easiest way to bring about any change is to ask them why they’re doing what they’re doing. Dig as deeply as possible, until you start scratching their worldview. Lead the conversation if you need to. Try to be as earnest as possible, and if the person starts getting defensive realize that there’s not much you can do. If they open up, or if you can deduce their worldview and bring it up, frame it in another perspective that shows why it’s wrong. Assure them that it’s not really the world-breaking, fault-admitting, cataclysmic event that it seems like to change. That’s a big problem with this situation, if they change they have to admit that they’re wrong (Which is a HUGE step in the right direction), but that unfolds to a more unpleasant situation where they feel they have to admit to everyone that they’ve wronged in the past. To restate this: They have to want to change. It’s like dealing with an addict, they must admit that there’s a problem. Without this, THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO but get them removed from your team, kicked out, or cut them out of your personal life and trust that they’ll do alright on their own.

So, what’s your world view? Do you think you can do anything so long as it means you aren’t alone? As long as you try to make everyone happy?
