Celebrate World Elephant Day Watching this New Film About Rehabilitating Elephants to the Wild in Kenya
Whether African or Asian, elephants around the world are revered for their majesty, intelligence, and as an example of astonishing sensitivity in one of the world’s largest creatures.
Seeing elephants in their natural setting remains a touchstone of travel for many who have African safaris on their bucket lists.
August 12th is World Elephant Day, which celebrates these magnificent creatures. It also asks people the world over to come together to conserve elephant habitats in the wild, and protect them from threats to their survival.
In addition, it’s a reminder for travelers fascinated with elephants to commit to experiencing them in non-exploitative and sustainable scenarios so they thrive - and are not abused while under human care for the entertainment of paying tourists.
One travel company is highlighting the role of travel in protecting elephants – and is trying to be part of the solution.
The Travel Corporation (TTC) is parent company of Insight Vacations, Luxury Gold, Red Carnation Hotels, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises, Trafalgar Tours, African Travel, Inc. and many more.
TTC also created the TreadRight Foundation, with a mission to “MAKE TRAVEL MATTER” for the planet we call home, the people its guests visit, wildlife, and guests. It has partnered with more than 55 projects in 26 countries in destinations TTC travel companies visit.
Nat Geo Filmmaker and TreadRight’s Wildlife Ambassador, Ami Vitale, is helping orphaned elephants through a new documentary short film, ‘Shaba’.
‘Shaba’ shares with viewers the ground-breaking work of Reteti Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya. It’s the first Indigenous owned and run sanctuary for orphaned elephants to rehabilitate them back into the wild.
“At the Reteti Elephant Rescue in Kenya, a sanctuary dear to my heart, I’ve had the honor of documenting a story from the beginning in 2016, when their first matriarch named Shaba arrived,” Vitale says about her film.
“This MAKE TRAVEL MATTER Experience provides guests the opportunity to visit the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, which takes in orphaned and abandoned elephant calves, rehabilitates them and eventually releases them back into the wild.
“The experience allows travelers to connect with and learn from the keepers of the sanctuary, who are all from the local community and formally trained in the care of the elephant calves. Through these opportunities, livelihoods are improving, and wildlife is returning, proving that wildlife and humanity can work in harmony to provide support to the populations that occupy nature’s magnificent ecosystems.”
WATCH THE TRAILER TO ‘SHABA’ ABOVE
At a virtual pre-screening of ‘Shaba,’ hosted by Lion World Travel and African Travel, Inc. for travel writers, the TreadRight Foundation donated ticket fees totalling $2,525 USD to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. This donation will help fund milk mixture for baby elephants, and veterinarian and medical bills for all the elephants at the Sanctuary.
If you dream of a future with elephants in the wild to inspire future generations of travelers, ‘Shaba’ is a film you don’t want to miss – or miss supporting.
You can learn more about Reteti Elephant Sanctuary and watch the entire film by clicking here. Ticket purchases are donations to the Reteti Elephant Sanctuary.

Today June 5th is #worldenviromentday , 2021 theme is Ecosystem Restoration and Pakistan is this years global host. Some ways we can all help is to reduce, renew and re-use, and Trafalgar and the Treadright Foundation are great supporters of these values. It is not to late to do your part and even small changes can make a big difference Here are a few photos including a photo of what have been lifesavers for me for the last year, my hiking boots, they have served me well, especially in this last year. The reason I bought these was they can be re-soled, and that what I did, after blowing the sole in a killer hike with my mate Tim, I sent them for a full refurbishment from Lowa, and here they are as good as new and ready for this years adventures. The other photo is from a recent hike from Innsbruck to Igls, a great day out and a special feature to be enjoyed is the Lanser Moor or Water Lily Pond in the Paschberg forest, the pond is under nature conservation and is home to fish and a few ducks, it looks peacefull and serene but also hides some big quicksand puddles. #simplytrafalgar @trafalgartravel @travelgroupie #worldenviromentday #enviromentday @innsbrucktourism @lowa.outdoor @gorewear @deuter @treadright #treadrightfoundation #maketravelmatter @visitaustria #lovenature #thegreatoutdoors #greenspace #hikesforlikes #photooftheday #instapics #wanderluster (at Innsbruck, Austria) https://www.instagram.com/p/CPvsv32sg0l/?utm_medium=tumblr

Paradise Dropped – and Discovered
Reflections on Earth Month
By Shannon Guihan
Chief TreadRight & Sustainability Officer
Dear Traveler,
This year, Earth Thirty day period arrives with particular poignancy. As The Travel Company celebrates its initial 100 several years, we also mark the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day – April 22, 1970 – which was the seed that grew into Earth Month. Now, in 2020, Earth Thirty day period comes in the midst of a globe-wide pandemic, bringing much of lifestyle – and just about all travel – to a standstill.
Difficult as this is for all of us, it offers an opportunity to mirror on our relationship to this world we all get in touch with home. This is specifically real for those people of us who have the great fortune to travel. If ever there was a time for a reset, this is it. With plans out of the blue set on keep, it is time to step back and ask ourselves some significant concerns. Why do we journey? What responsibilities come with our journeys? How do we want our journey to impact the earth we learn, the individuals we meet, and the wildlife we see?
Even though this pandemic is new territory for everybody, for individuals of us at TreadRight, these inquiries are not new. They are what led to TreadRight’s founding a dozen yrs in the past, what drives us to do the get the job done we do each day. For me, personally, these are questions that have shaped my career.
I am not exaggerating when I notify you I grew up in Paradise – just outside the house of St. John’s, Newfoundland, an island off the east coastline of Canada. For me, as a kid, the name of the town fit – from my front door I could run through empty fields and make it to Topsail beach front to it’s possible spot a seal or two. Depending on the time of yr, just about every route led to snowboarding, hiking, or paddling.
Back then, the economy of Newfoundland & Labrador was largely based on the fishing business, particularly cod. That all improved in the summertime of 1992 when many years of overfishing by multi-national interests had decreased the northern cod populace to around zero. The Canadian government banned the follow of cod fishing and, right away, the industry was near collapse. By the time I was 16, the tourism business was kicking off speedily, and I soon uncovered myself performing as a sea kayak guide along the island’s rugged southern shore, with jagged cliffs over, swarms of jellyfish underneath, and, nearby, pods of fin and minke, and humpback whales that returned to the Grand Banks each summer to feed.
Unbelievable a yard as it was, what I observed in Newfoundland’s increasing tourism market still left me perplexed. The identical boats that the moment fished for cod now arrived full of tourists, chasing whales and interrupting their feeding. It seemed that “fisheries” had been changed by “tourism,” and guided by much the exact same perspective: Make money quickly, but turn a blind eye to defense. In the system of visiting Paradise, tourists have been trampling it. While not the intention, it was often the result.
It seemed to me there must be a proper way to explore pure beauty – and this was not it. Seeking to understand, I went to university where I studied Outdoor Recreation and Environmental Schooling, then on to graduate university for a master’s degree in Tourism and Environmental Administration, writing my thesis on “Codes of Conduct for Marine Ecotourism.”
Anxious to put my newfound understanding into practice, I joined the functions staff of a niche tour operator, which permitted me to put sustainable methods into place. We labored difficult, did most of the suitable things, and thrived. And but, when I looked at the major photograph, our impact was limited. We ended up one of many such effectively-intentioned small operators, just about every performing in our own space – whilst the destruction becoming finished by tourism all over the globe was vast, and growing.
From there I released and built a tourism consultancy, in which I was capable to do the job with places all over the world to deal with the way in which they develop, market, and sector their locations. And however, the jobs I was doing the job on ended up yet again modest, and I was keen to concentrate on sustainability at scale.
In the course of this time TTC was a consulting client of mine, and as it arrived time for me to shift over and above consulting, it was also very clear that TTC wanted someone to take TreadRight and sustainability to the following degree, looking to appoint their first Chief Sustainability Officer. I was intrigued, whilst in any other scenario would have been more than a minor cautious. I realized full perfectly that the C in TTC stood for “corporation,” and I’m a cynic when it will come to what companies say and do in phrases of sustainability – I’ve under no circumstances wished to enjoy a element in company greenwashing. Nonetheless, obtaining worked along with Brett Tollman and his team of executives for a number of decades, I experienced observed the depth and sincerity of their motivation. We experienced worked carefully on difficulties these types of as plastics in the travel marketplace, the impression of overtourism and aid for micro-enterprises. The passion they brought to the work had grown steadily more intense and focused, coming down to three terms: Make Journey Make a difference.
I took the work.
I’ve spoken of two P’s so far – the Energy a large organization has to have an impact at scale, and the Enthusiasm I saw from the teams at TTC. But there is a third P that is most important – Partnership. In purchase for travel to genuinely have a good impact, we need coordinated endeavours at just about every stage, with all of us realizing that our efforts are component of the even larger image.
We began by identifying the three critical areas in which journey has the biggest likely for influence: Earth, Folks, and Wildlife. With these as the three pillars of TreadRight, we looked to see who was doing the best work in each realm. This has led to us partnering with over fifty-5 initiatives about the globe, and a new, shortly to be released company-wide strategy aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Improvement Ambitions.
As you now take time to consider your future travels, I invite you to share in the inspiration I obtain every working day from the individuals and communities with whom we associate, like Rosamira, Executive Director of Proyecto Tití, which protects the critically endangered cotton best tamarin in Colombia. Through WildlifeSOS in Jaipur, India, you will meet the actually impassioned people working to inform tourists and prevent the cruel follow of driving elephants. And nowhere will you obtain more impressive visionaries than Sam Judd and Camden Howitt, co-founders of Sustainable Coastlines in New Zealand. Last month – before travel was suspended, which now feels like a incredibly extended time back – I spent an inspiring afternoon alongside other TTC volunteers, collecting and categorizing trash discovered on a New Zealand beach in the title of citizen science.
In her blog posting very last month for Worldwide Women’s Day, Bea Tollman wrote that supporting girls and girls is essential, and a lot of of our initiatives do just that. When you journey to Perugia, Italy, you will meet up with Marta at Laboratorio Giuditta Bronzzetti. When I was released to her, she was working in a crumbling church with a hole in its roof, as the very last in a lineage of hand frame weavers carrying on traditions dating back to the Renaissance. TreadRight partnered with her to restore the church’s roof and develop her reward store, where she now trains the next technology of weavers. You are going to obtain a similar story in Peru, where Centro de Textiles Traditionales del Cusco preserves 10,000-12 months-old Andean traditions though providing training and employment to females. And, at thirteen locations throughout rural Laos, you will discover girls and girls understanding standard techniques through Ock Pop Tock’s Village Weavers Venture.
For now, I invite you to learn about all these incredible partnerships and more at TreadRight.org. When the time comes to travel again, you will have the chance to pay a visit to and support a lot of of our partners all-around the entire world, through the amazing itineraries offered by TTC’s models.
Some of TreadRight’s most important partnerships are with our ambassadors, who serve as our storytellers – and tale listeners – close to the environment. Céline Cousteau, granddaughter of Jacques Cousteau and an accomplished activist, filmmaker, and explorer in her have correct serves as our planet ambassador – look at out her beautiful video telling of the story of Iraq Al Amir Women’s Cooperative in Jordan. Sarain Fox, our folks ambassador, is a To start with Nations activist and artist, helping preserve Canada’s indigenous culture through Manitoba Mukluk’s Storyboot School. Check out her tips on how we make our journey issue. This year TreadRight welcomed Ami Vitale as our first wildlife ambassador. An award-profitable Countrywide Geographic photographer, she specializes in telling the stories behind the headlines. When travel resumes, she will be sharing stories from some of our projects in southern Africa, including those welcoming Red Carnation visitors to Bushman’s Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat, South Africa, and Botswana’s shortly to open Xigera Safari Lodge – which, by the way will be nearly 100% photo voltaic run.
These are but a few of the places the place we function, and I’ve told you why we do what we do – to Make Travel Matter. As TTC’s Chief Sustainability Officer, I also emphasis on how we put this into practice on a everyday foundation, ensuring that the beneficial impression of your travel begins extensive before your journey, through the practices of each and every of TTC’s 42 brand names. We are eliminating all unnecessary single-use plastics from our offices, in our hotels and on all of our outings. Each TTC traveler is inspired to bring their personal reusable drinking water bottle on their vacation and to receive paperwork electronically, and when you choose to do so, we plant a tree through our E-Files Initiative. This calendar year, we will be planting in Australia, helping the recovery from the awful bush fires there. TTC’s Toronto office – where I operate – is powered by geothermal power, and a excellent range of our offices all over the globe have had photo voltaic panels set up.
As you can notify, when it comes to guaranteeing journey has a optimistic impact, there are a lot of moving sections – and a extensive way to go. But, as they say, Paradise was not built in a working day.
I’d like to end with our most important partnership: You, our vacationers. In addition to the visits, you will be capable to make with TTC’s companies to see and assist these initiatives, a portion of every single greenback you spend with every TTC company funds this function. And, be sure to examine and signal on to our journey pledge – which upholds the simple, critical tenets of TreadRight and TTC – to help protect and protect our planet, our persons and their communities, and the wildlife of our wonderful fragile earth.
Just as I began this write-up with concerns, I’ll stop with one more, for you. The time to travel will appear again – ideally, quickly. When it does, how will you make travel matter?
Sincerely,
Shannon Guihan

Jonathan Teoh had the adventure of a lifetime when he joined a group of outdoor enthusiasts in Sarawak five years ago.
Being in nature was something the 28-year-old risk consultant from Petaling Jaya, Selangor truly appreciated. But the highlight of his holiday was actually participating in a community project to build a dam for the indigenous community at Kampung Muk Ayun in Padawan.
“It was a great experience hiking into the forest and living so close to nature, especially for many of us who were from the city. But what was even more meaningful was spending time with people at the village, talking to them and understanding how they live,” he said.
This is what a voluntourist is – a traveller who makes it a point to volunteer or do some good for the local community when on holiday.
Teoh reckons that while it is tempting to get caught up in the fun you can have while on holiday – jungle trekking, visiting waterfalls, enjoying the beauty of nature – one might want to listen to and help the local communities in the places they visit.
Voluntourism is becoming an increasingly popular way to travel, especially with today’s millennials who wish to give back to society when they are on holiday.
Voluntourism (“volunteerism” and “tourism”) has become a whole new trend in travel. It is a form of tourism where tourists choose to take part in voluntary work, usually for a charity, while they explore and see new places. They can volunteer their time or skills (or both) with the aim of making a positive difference in communities around the world.
Voluntourism packages and tours are becoming increasingly popular in Malaysia too.
Shyam Priah, the founder of Yellow House, an NGO that offers voluntourism opportunities for travellers to Malaysia, feels that such trips are for travellers who want to challenge themselves while on holiday. It is for travellers who want to learn about different cultures, not just by visiting them, but by immersing themselves in a local community for a short period of time, she says.
A positive impact
But, while it is a good thing to want to do good or feel good while on holiday, there are several factors to consider when embarking on a voluntourism trip or purchasing a travel package that includes voluntourism.
Voluntourists need to make sure that the cause they are volunteering for is genuine and that the organisations which they go through are legitimate.
They also need to consider whether their voluntourism efforts have a positive and meaningful impact, rather than causing harm or disrupting the community that they visit.
Voluntourists bathing dogs at an animal shelter in KL, a project run by Yellow House KL. Photo: Yellow House KL
Selecting the right charitable organisation for your voluntourism efforts is important.
Research the companies or organisations you are going with and check if their projects actually benefit the community.
“Voluntourism projects must be sustainable with measurable progress so that voluntourists can know that their money is well-spent on the intended cause and makes a positive impact,” Priah advised.
While some travellers prefer to go on voluntourism trips on their own, others choose the easier and safer way of volunteering through a charity organisation.
There are also tour companies like Trafalgar and Insight Vacations that offer such add-on options on their tours. Some cruise companies such as Genting Cruise Lines and Royal Caribbean International also offer passengers the opportunity to do good during their cruise holiday.
Muhammad Hameem Sheik Alaudin, 21, who went on a cruise holiday on Dream Cruises with his parents, earlier this year, says: “Usually, when people go on a cruise, most of the time is spent having fun on board or sightseeing during shore excursions. So, it was great to have the opportunity to volunteer. It was a great experience to be able to give back to the society.”
Passengers on the cruise had the opportunity to visit the Eden Handicap Service Centre in Penang to help with some light maintenance work, donate provisions, as well as interact with the residents. They also went to the Baan Kalim School in Phuket, Thailand, where they helped repaint the school library and meeting room, and donate books.

Giving a hand-up
Travellers also need to decide what kind of voluntourism they wish to be involved in. There are many causes where people can be part of when travelling, whether long-term or short-term.
Founder and director of non-profit organisation The TreadRight Foundation, Brett Tollman says that a good way to look at voluntourism is as “purpose-driven tourism” where travellers can help give third world societies a hand-up in life.
Giving money, food or clothing to such communities is necessary for meeting an immediate need and good for the short-term.
But, he suggests that travellers who have the time and resources can look at being involved for a longer duration to have a longer lasting effect on the societies that they visit.
“Supporting the locals and providing them with the knowledge or infrastructure so that they can lift themselves up, earn a living and be independent is ideal,” Tollman said, referring to the famous quote “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
Voluntourists with the right expertise can do things like helping locals to build a proper system for running water, teach them how to plant their crops or other life skills that will enable them to carve out a living for themselves or meet their basic needs.
There are also other areas that voluntourists can help with such as in education (by building schools and teaching English), women empowerment and social enterprise.
Besides helping out with a society’s needs when you travel, you can also do good in areas such as wildlife or environment conservation.
Chu Mei Fong, 29, a KL-based travel blogger who volunteers with wildlife and environmental organisations when she travels, says that the more she travels, the more she realises how important it is to give back to the communities that she visits.
“I wanted to travel off-the-beaten path around Malaysia as well as experience the country on a deeper level and such voluntourism projects have enabled me to do this while contributing to a good cause,” said Chu, who loves nature, wildlife and being outdoors.

Want to go on an adventure that will change your life!!?? Recently I joined the @treadright foundation on a trip to Jordan to bring awareness to our global plastic epidemic which is not only in the ocean, but also in the middle of the desert plaguing places such as Petra - a new 7 wonder of the world! Head over the @treadright Instagram to where I’m sharing solutions for earth week!!! I highly recommend joining a @treadright adventure to their many global locations as they do not use single use plastic‘s on their trips and offer a unique way to travel while making a difference with important causes from empowering women, to protecting nature, and you can even help baby elephants!!! I believe the secret to happiness and getting “unstuck” in life is to travel with a purpose! #maketravelmatter #happyearthday 📷 @connor.guest (at Petra, Ma`An, Jordan) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwkpEYGlfzi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=18jvodp2bs21
