Thedas Tuesday
I started this last Tuesday, and you wanna know how many relationships I wrote between then and yesterday?
Varric. I wrote up Ariel's relationship with Varric last Tuesday, and then didn't get around to writing any of the others until this afternoon. Even having a clear idea of most of them, that took a lot out of me. Aveline in particular completely surprised me with the direction her relationship with Ariel took.
This is where I realised that my canon, while it aligns with the games it takes place, doesn't necessary line up with the game that followed. Again, this is about Aveline. In Dragon Age II, it is canonically possible to get her to a point where she will resign from the City Guard, and I decided that that I wanted to write that into her relationship with Ariel. That does mean it contradicts literally everything about her in relation to Dragon Age Inquisition, but you know what? That's Bioware's fault for giving me the option in Dragon Age II and not considering the follow-through in Inquisition.
Anway, without further adieu, please find the companion relationships for Dragon Age II under the cut (including Dog, because Dog counts, dammit).
Dermid Hawke
Ariel's shrewd mabari hound, undeniably the fourth Hawke child, and overall good boy. Expert card shark and frequent player at Varric's weekly Wicked Grace games.
Bethany Hawke
Ariel always got on better with Bethany than she did with Carver, and while that initially led to some tension between them after his death ("Could I have done more if I hadn't been so focused on protecting my sister?" is a question they both ask themselves many times in the years to come), ultimately the love they have for each other is deeper than any outside force. While Bethany initially resented Ariel for leaving her out of the Deep Roads Expedition, and was scared when the templars arrived to take her to the Circle, over time it grew to be more of a relief to not be looking over her shoulder anymore. This only reinforced Ariel's own beliefs that the Circles served a necessary role, and she would spend the next few years maintaining this perspective as their correspondence continued.
It wasn't until Bethany was abducted by Thrask and Grace, who hoped to use her as leverage to force Ariel to act, that Ariel was forced to admit that the situation in Kirkwall had gotten out of control. Even then, she resisted all efforts to force her to pick a side, toeing the line with Meredith right up until the moment when Meredith took it upon herself to annul the Kirkwall Circle of Magi in response to Anders destroying the Chantry. At long last, Ariel was forced to open her eyes and admit that she couldn't stand by and watch while the templars continued to abuse their authority. When the templars came to execute their charges, the Hawke sisters stood side by side and held the line, rebuking the attack and, when it came to it, striking down Knight-Commander Meredith.
Aveline Vallen
Initially tentative friends after fleeing from Lothering, the two of them grew distant in the year of indentured servitude to Athenril and her smugglers, as Aveline resented being made to do illegal work. The very day that their debt was cleared, Aveline enlisted with the Kirkwall city guard, and that put additional strain on their relationship as Ariel continued to associate with Kirkwall's criminal underworld. Even so, it was to Hawke that Aveline turned to when she began to suspect something untoward was happening with Guard Captain Jeven, and in the years to come, she would credit Hawke with her own rapid rise to the role of Guard Captain.
The relationship took another serious hit when a blood mage abducted and killing Ariel's mother. Ariel blamed the City Guards' inaction during an earlier investigation – and Aveline in particular – for her mother's death, while Aveline viewed it as a tragedy that she could not have prevents despite how much she wished it. It became a point of contention between them that wouldn't be resolved until a couple of years later. Aveline's involvement in the Arishok being moved to take action against Kirkwall drove an additional wedge between them.
With little in the way of friends and no family to speak of, Aveline threw herself into her role as Guard Captain for the next three years, taking the lessons she had learned from Leandra's death and the Qunari invasion and applying them to the City Guard with ruthless determination. Her new exacting standards produced a higher quality of guard overall, at the cost of quantity. And despite herself, Ariel's respect for Aveline grew, particularly as Meredith blocked all efforts to crown and new viscount, while the templars refused to step up and support the Guard. They finally mended fences after Jeven returned to stir up resentment in both the current guards and those who had failed to meet Aveline's standards. Realising that she had been trying to save something that was determined to destroy itself, Aveline decided to resign from her position and dedicate herself full time to the cause of keeping the city safe, alongside Ariel.
Varric Tethras
They get on like a house on fire. What began as a mutually beneficial business arrangement quickly evolved into a lasting friendship, and it wouldn’t be inaccurate to say that Varric is Ariel’s best friend. In the early days, Varric helped Ariel practice her lockpicking skills, giving her pointers and advice. As the years passed, she became his confidante and the person he turned to whenever he needed help. Similarly, Varric was always ready with a flagon of ale and an ear to listen when Ariel was fed up dealing with the Kirkwall nobility.
When Varric’s traitorous brother returned to Kirkwall, Ariel was eager to get some good old-fashioned revenge along with her friend, but she changed her mind after seeing the state he was in. She persuaded Varric to spare Bartrand’s life, and with her family’s connections to the Chantry, was able to help him find a sanitarium where he could receive the care he needed. For the remainder of her time in Kirkwall, Ariel would pay fortnightly visits to Bartrand, bringing flowers and reading to him. And a couple of years later, as the situation with the templars got worse and the Veil in Kirkwall grew ever more fragile, the two of them needed to return to the manor where Bartrand had been holed up, recovering a piece of the red lyrium idol that had driven him mad. The two of them debated for several tense minutes before Varric convinced Ariel that keeping the chip of the idol was worth the trouble, as it might help him help Bartrand.
When things finally came to a head with Knight-Commander Meredith, Varric expressed concerns about actively opposing the Templar Order, but he still backed Ariel a hundred percent.
Sebastian Vael
Grand Cleric Elthina might have said that Ariel brought out the worst in Sebastian, but the truth is that she only ever encouraged him to pursue what was rightfully his. Their relationship was tempestuous at times, but they developed real feelings for each other as the years passed, and the result was that Sebastian did begin to pull away from the Chantry as his focus turned to Starkhaven and how its people continued to suffer.
After Elthina's death at Anders' hands, Sebastian realised he had nothing left to hold him back. With Ariel's support, he returned to Starkhaven and claimed the throne that had been his all along.
Fenris
Ariel met Fenris through her connections with Athenril's smuggling ring, and the two became fast friends, with Fenris accompanying Ariel and Varric on the expedition into the Deep Roads along with another of their friends, Isabela. In the years the followed, he became one of Ariel's most reliable allies, and she his. Though they would never quite see eye-to-eye on the issue of mages, Ariel did help him to heal from many of his worst traumas, and in the end he stood side-by-side with her to protect the mages of Kirkwall when Meredith tried to annul the Circle of Magi.
Merrill
The relationship between Ariel and Merrill did not get off on the right foot, as Merrill's use of blood magic and consorting with a demon in the pursuit of knowledge to restore an ancient elven mirror immediately put Ariel on edge. It was not until after Bethany was taken by the templars that things began to change. Ariel, for all intents and purposes, adopted Merrill as a surrogate sister to protect, just as she had been taught all her life to protect Bethany. This didn't always go well. Merrill was no Bethany, and Ariel didn't always make the right choices in her efforts to "protect" Merrill. She always walked a thin line between trying to support Merrill's pursuit of lost knowledge and showing an interest in elven culture, and trying to discourage Merrill's use of "forbidden" magic.
Things finally came to a head some six or seven years after their first meeting, when Merril's former teacher and maternal figure, Keeper Marethari, took it upon herself to put a permanent end to Merrill's pursuit of the knowledge she sought by taking the demon into herself and becoming an abomination. Merrill was forced to fight and kill Marethari, and when the last remnants of her clan – those who hadn't already departed to find a home with other clans – found out what had happened, they turned on her and attempted to kill her. And Ariel did what she had been taught to do: she protected her sister.
Filled with shame and despair for her role in the death of her clan, Merrill shattered the mirror that she had poured so much of her life into. Ariel, surprising both of them, told Merrill that she couldn't hold herself responsible for the actions of Marethari or the clan, and encouraged Merrill to not give up on her pursuit of ancient elven knowledge.
Anders
Ariel had a great many concerns about Anders from the beginning, and the only reason the didn't turn him over to the templars on the spot was because of the potential attention it could bring to Bethany. As time went on, she had to concede that he did a lot of good work for the residents of Darktown, in particular the Fereldan refugees, but she never fully trusted him.
Isabela
While nobody looking from the outside would have called Ariel and Isabela friends, they did move in similar circles, and had a relationship built on mutual respect and sometimes also flirting. They both knew nothing would ever come of it, as Ariel was too pious for Isabela's tastes and Isabela too reckless by half from Ariel's perspective, but it was fun to play pretend all the same (and they did play, that one time, but again, nothing ever came of it). The two of them were also bonded by their shared love for Merrill.
Isabela blamed Ariel's influence on her for her decision to bring the Tome of Koslun back to return it to the Arishok, and also for her decisions to keep coming back to Kirkwall again and again over the next few years. For her part, Ariel did really appreciate Isabela's company, and was always happy to buy a round or three at the Hanged Man in Lowtown and listen to the latest tales of Isabela's attempts to leave Kirkwall behind.
Tallis
A Qunari agent who tricked Ariel into helping her recover a list of names that would have identified countless other Qunari working undercover in southern Thedas. Ariel bitterly regrets not being fast enough to put an end to Tallis and recover that list for herself.

“If it’s family, you protect. Doesn’t matter who it is, blood or not.”
Aveline was born in Orlais, but she never knew the country. Her father, Benoit du Lac, was a chevalier who lost his patron to the game of intrigue. He fled to Ferelden while Aveline was an infant, and though his holdings were meager, he was determined she would have the life he had lost: she would become a knight, no matter the cost. He eventually sold everything to sponsor Aveline into King Cailan’s service.
Knightly skills seemed bred into Aveline’s bones, but she had her doubts-- starting with her namesake, Ser Aveline. The first female knight of Orlais was orphaned, mocked for her looks and murdered when she dared stand with men in a tournament. Her glory lies in tragedy, but the living Aveline doesn’t revere sacrifice: a principled death with still a death. Her father was proud of her, but she would never be the knight he wished for.
Aveline married Wesley Vallen while serving in the Fereldan army. They were kindred spirits and determined guardians. His death during the Blight scarred her-- not just his loss, but that she failed to protect him. Aveline has healed in the past year, but she has yet to forgive herself. Accordingly, she is fiercely protective of the Hawkes and Hawke. They share a bond in loss, a connection she cherishes but will not allow to be repeated.

The Viscount's Mistress

Nobody predicted the darling of the Cadash Carta family would resurrect the long-dead Inquisition. And if you would have asked if Kirkwall would ever have named the most notable resident of the Hanged Man their Viscount, the patrons of that un-esteemed establishment would have laughed you right out. Fate is a fickle thing, but some dwarves are just lucky that way.
Varric Tethras and Maria Cadash have loved, lost, survived, and conquered the world. There should be time to enjoy their success and rebuild Thedas, while building a family of their own. After all, if Fenris and Hawke can raise a baby it can't be that hard, right?
If only the anchor that helped Maria save the world wasn't, you know, also killing her.

Here are the OCs in my canon Dragon Age timeline for the first day of @filipinoocweek .
They are: Rhian Surana, Kaia and Alden Hawke, and Luwalhati Lavellan (Lu’s screencap was taken by the lovely @rhunae ). Info about them under the cut since I don’t want to take up people’s dashes.
(All four OCs have Seheron ancestry since that’s the closest place in the Dragon Age setting to the Philippines. The Amells were originally from Seheron and Clan Lavellan had previously merged with a Seheron clan a while back)
Rhian Surana
Age: 18 at the beginning of the Fifth Blight
Height: 4′11
Gender: cis female
Sexuality: Asexual
Class and Specialization: Mage | Spirit Healer and Arcane Warrior
Romanced: Zevran
Bio: Rhian’s parents were born in Kirkwall (separately) and have ancestry from Seheron. They met while they were working under the Couslands, fell in love, then had Rhian. Rhian’s magic manifested at around age 4. Her parents did a pretty good job at hiding her magic until one day Fergus walked in on her casting a spell. The Templars came in the next day to drag her to the Circle. Her father tried to stop them and was ultimately killed.
During her time in the Circle, Rhian befriended Jowan and Eadric, then eventually became friends with Anders and Karl as well. Rhian showed a natural talent for magic which led to First Enchanter Irving offering to mentor her personally. Rhian quickly rose in rank among her peers causing her to receive her Harrowing not long after her 18th birthday.
Shortly after, Rhian was involved in an incident with her friend Jowan that forced her to either join the Grey Wardens or become Tranquil. After Loghain’s betrayal, Rhian was forced to take charge of uniting Ferelden against the incoming Blight. She was not pleased with this as she hadn’t been outside in more than a decade. Rhian gained many companions along the way. She ended up becoming close friends with Leliana, Morrigan, and Alistair as well as falling in love with Zevran. Rhian would eventually make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save Thedas from the blight and a statue was erected in her name. However, there are rumors that she did not actually die and is currently with Zevran and Alistair elsewhere.
As a token of affection from Zevran, Rhian wears a gold hoop earring on her right ear. She is also visibly chubby.
Kaia Hawke
Age: 23 at the beginning of the Fifth Blight
Height: 6′3
Gender: cis female
Sexuality: Aro/Ace
Class and Specialization: Mage | Spirit Healer and Force Mage
Romanced: No one
Alden Hawke
Age: 23 at the beginning of the Fifth Blight
Height: 5′11
Gender: cis male
Sexuality: Homosexual
Class and Specialization: Dual-Weilding Rogue | Shadow and Assassin
Romanced: Fenris
Bio: The twins Kaia and Alden were born in Lothering to Malcolm and Leandra Hawke. Kaia’s magic did not manifest itself until the age of 6, about one year after Carver and Bethany were born. Malcolm took it upon himself to teach his daughter how to control her magic. Once Bethany’s magic also manifested itself, Malcolm taught the two together, though Bethany quickly surpassed her older sister in skill. After Malcolm’s death, it was up to the older twins to take care of the family. Alden would take on odd jobs, which helped him develop his stealthing skill, and Kaia worked hard not to be discovered by the Templar.
When it was revealed the King Cailan was looking for volunteers to join his army, Carver and Alden immediately signed up and left for Ostagar. Alden and Carver survived the battle due to the fact that when it became clear that Cailan had been betrayed, Carver heaved Alden onto his shoulder and ran all the way back to Lothering.
Due to the impending darkspawn threat, the Hawke family fled to Kirkwall along with Aveline Vallen, another Ostagar survivor, where they were united with their Uncle Gamlen. It was here that they met Varric Tethras and his brother Bartrand. Soon, the twins become a partner in Bartrand’s expedition with the promise of becoming rich and head for the Deep Roads using maps provided by the Grey Warden Anders. It is here that tragedy strikes and Bethany and Carver are forced to join the Grey Warden order or succumb to the taint.
As a result of the expedition, the Hawke family is able to petition for their name back and are now reinstated to the noble class. At this point, the Kirkwall Crew has grown to include Isabela, Merrill, Fenris, Varric, Anders/Justice, Aveline, and Sebastian. Soon Alden and Fenris get together. Three years after the expedition, their mother is horribly killed and the Hawke twins somehow manage to stop a Qunari invasion. Kaia is named the Champion of Kirkwall as it was she who landed the final blow against the Arishok.
Three years later, the tension betweent the mages and the Templars reach a breaking point. Out of desperation, Anders blows up the Kirkwall Chantry. Kaia and Alden are then forced to defend the mages from the Templars with the help of their companions. After hearing about what happened, they are also joined by Carver and Bethany. It was soon found out that Knight-Commander Meredith had gone mad due to the red lyrium idol found years prior. The Hawkes leave Kirkwall and the companions go their separate ways, save for Fenris.
Luwalhati Lavellan
Age: 28 at the time of the Conclave explosion
Height: 5′00
Gender: cis female
Sexuality: Demisexual
Class and Specialization: Mage | Fire Necromancer
Romanced: Solas
Bio: Luwalhati was born to a hunter and the hahren of Clan Lavellan. Her magic manifested at around age 5. Growing up, Luwalhati grew very interested in the stories her father would tell the clan. She always listened intently and often asked for more during bedtime. While she loved hearing her father talk about Dalish history, she also loved hearing about the day’s hunt. She would wait very excitedly for her mother to come back. Her mother would always tell her about the different animals she came across and how to listen to nature to know when to strike.
Luwalhati only had two close friends, a warrior and a rogue, in the clan as she was often deemed too serious and unapproachable. This was even furthered when Luwalhati received her vallaslin. Throughout the ritual, Lu kept a straight face and barely flinched. This caused a few of the clan members to not only respect her but also slightly fear her. Lu is a hard worker and loves to learn new things. When she was chosen to become the First, she was elated as she had been studying and training her whole life.
When Divine Justinia called for the Conclave, the Keeper sent Luwalhati, along with her two friends, to the spy as the verdict would likely affect their clan. Unfortunately, Lu’s two friends were part of those who did not survive the explosion.
In the beginning, Luwalhati wanted nothing to do with the Inquisition. It seemed like a shem problem and Lu’s only goal was to return to her clan. She had mistakenly assumed that complying with the advisors would make the process go faster so she could return faster. It was not until after saving the mages at Redcliffe and the attack on Haven that she finally took the Inquisition seriously. Finding out that it was Corypheus who caused the explosion that killed her friends was a big factor in her drive to defeat Corypheus.
It was difficult for Luwalhati to get along with her companions at first because she was a proud Dalish elf and tended to have a stick up her ass. It was Varric who convinced her to let loose a little. Lu had tried to befriend Solas first because he was both an elf and a mage and she had mistakenly assumed that there would be solidarity. Their conversations often led to debates until Solas finally learned to be more understanding. Eventually, the two would get together.
As Inquisitor, Luwalhati left Stroud in the Fade as she knew how much Hawke meant to Varric. She also had Celene and Briala rule together. Lu also chose to drink from the well. It would not have been her choice if she could, but she did not feel right letting Morrigan have it since it was her heritage in question. Luwalhati would also eventually have Leliana as Divine.
Trespasser was particularly difficult for Lu, she found out that her ex not only killed her two best friends but was also the one person she was supposed to stay away from and was planning on destroying the world. Though Lu had initially thought she was over Solas, she ultimately ended up vowing to redeem him if possible.

Dear Wintersend
Hello, dear Wintersend friend, and thanks for volunteering for this exchange! I’m really excited to see what you’ll come up with. This letter just adds a little to what I’ve already put in the signup information.
I’ll just preface the following by saying that although I’m going to list things I like, what I find exciting in this exchange is seeing your stories—the ideas and relationships that you come up with. I like being surprised. Please don’t feel like the information I provide is a required direction or a straight jacket!
What I like:
I have an enormous fondness for stories that put the protagonists through an emotional wringer, but there MUST be a happy ending (or satisfactory resolution in context that doesn’t leave them desolate and flattened in the mud) if you do. I like everything from fluff to explicit sex, but with feelings behind it. I like strong women who may make mistakes but do their best to fix them in the end. I love sex with humour. (I like a bit of humour in everything, really, even—especially?—if it’s dry or black; the ability to see the humour in tragedy is what keeps people sane throughout the angst.)
What I don’t like:
I have no tolerance whatsoever for noncon. Hardcore kink does not really speak to me. I don’t like characters having to get blind drunk to discover their feelings (a little tipsy is okay). On the whole, although I’ve read modern AUs that I like a lot, it takes a bit to get me beyond the “no, this is wrong” reaction that they tend to provoke in me.
The pairings:
1.     Female Inquisitor/Cassandra Pentaghast
Cassandra: I have a very great fondness for Cassandra, obviously, because—well, because she’s Cassandra. Sigh. I like her struggling to make sense of things that she has never really learned how to deal with. I adore her strength and determination. I—well, I could keep going on about Cassandra all day.
I especially like anything about her realizing her feelings for another woman and trying to figure out what to do about it. BUT on the other hand, it could be really interesting to see it go the other way—with the Inquisitor being the one trying to figure it out and Cassandra steady and solid. So feel free to play around with any and all permutations of this trope if you decide to go in that direction.
Female Inquisitor: I lean toward Trevelyan or Adaar, but any Inquisitor would work. I tend to like Inquisitors who are feisty and determined and passionate. Or quiet and determined and passionate. Well, that covers just about everything, doesn’t it?
2.     Cassandra Pentaghast/Leliana
As I said in my request, I think the pairing of Leliana and Cassandra is just fascinating. They’re had a professional relationship for years; they are both somewhat isolated because of their work. They are very, very different in their approaches to solving problems, and that would be true whether Leliana is hardened or softened. Leliana’s faith or lack of it would complicate any relationship.
Where could this relationship go? I’d love to see what you think.
3.     Isabela/Aveline Vallen
I don’t think there’s nearly enough Aveline femslash out there: she’s yet another “Bioware what do you mean I can’t romance her?” I think Aveline is like Cassandra in some ways, but probably significantly easier to embarrass. The contrast between her and Isabela, and how they work through differences to find something to respect in each other, is fascinating, and I’d love to see that process explored in a romantic/sexual relationship. I like stories with Isabela discovering her heart, but not turning into an entirely gooey romantic because of it; she should still be Isabela.
4.     Female Hawke/Aveline
I like purple Hawke and a certain level of snark and combativeness between characters. Hawke and Aveline are thrown together by circumstance; Aveline is very conventional, especially in her morality, and Hawke is very far from that, which could set up some interesting and subtle as well as obvious dynamics. There are so many possibilities with these two!
 -----
Please, my friend: whatever you end up doing—have fun with it! I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Of Miracles and Heroes

Varric's book ends with the defeat of Meredith, but to Fenris and Varric that is just the beginning. Fenris has spent more of his life as a fugitive and slave than not, and wasted too much time in Kirkwall not being with Hawke. They're on the run from just about everyone, but find some unlikely allies in a cousin (and Warden Commander) she never did have time to meet. Hawke can't bring herself to kill Anders, but that doesn't mean Anders is going to let Fenris get a happily ever after that Anders thinks should be his.
When Varric leaves to throw the seekers off Hawke's trail, he ends up trapped in an Inquisition he didn't mean to be part of. He's trying to figure out how to make his graceful exit, when the Conclave explodes and a former Carta member walks out of the fade. Varric thought he'd never love again, and he was sure he'd never fall into the trap of being in love with a walking miracle. Unfortunately, Cadash isn't going to be as easy to resist as he thought she would be.

There's a saying: "Either you die as a hero, or live long enough to become the villain". Or something like that. Graeme Amell has grown from a doomed pawn in the Circle to be the reluctant Hero of Ferelden, ruthless Commander of the Grey, and after all that happened with the talking darkspawn, he went to become a runaway apostate in the search of another. His journey led to Kirkwall, where he met his old friend, and found his blood-relatives. But you know there's also a saying about that as well: "Family is only there to bring you misery".
Or in other words, yet another "What if the Warden somehow ended up in DA2" fics. Oh, I know, I know. "Get a priest and marry that damned character if you love it so much". Sorry can't do that, I'm taken. :P Fic's title is temporary, updates will be infrequent, because I want it to be good folks, not something crappy I usually do.

The Gift of the Magi

by un-shit-yourself (fenix_down)
It had been one hectic, emotional, and passionate year since Anders moved into the estate, and Hawke was determined to give the mage something to honor their anniversary. Anders had been the one to mention it in passing, saying that he couldn’t believe time had gone by so quickly; Hawke made a comment about “time flying when you’re having fun” and gave Anders a wink. Truthfully, there had been a lot to keep them occupied outside of the bedroom; the mage underground, all the favors and jobs Hawke did for the city’s inhabitants, and the tragedy with Leandra.
But despite everything that had happened, all the turmoil and the stress, Hawke had never been happier. He wanted to show Anders how much he loved him, how much he needed him, with some sort of token the mage could have as a reminder of what he meant to Hawke. The problem was that he’d never been good with gift-giving and had no idea where to start.
