In the interpersonal drama "Abe" in Brooklyn, a 12 year old boy (Noah Schnapp, from "Stranger Things") tries a culinary solution to unite the Palestinian Muslim and Jewish Israeli sides of his family: fusion cuisine. Directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Grostein Andrade, it is a cursed and predictable film, with simplified and child-friendly shots on complex political issues. It is also a surprisingly joyless production, devoid of stylistic and emotional flair to hold even the cheesy promise of configuration.The first scene presents Abe's dysfunctional family life. Her birthday dinner includes three cakes: one from her maternal grandfather, with the name "Avram" on top; another says "Ibrahim", as his paternal grandparents prefer to call it; and the third, made by the budding chef himself, has his choice name, "Abe". None of them have candles because their parents - their categorically atheist father, Amir (Arian Moayed), and agnostic mother, Rebecca (Dagmara Dominczyk) - were too busy bickering. Soon, the celebration turns into a bitter debate on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.It is a difficult situation for a shy and friendless schoolboy, and Schnapp plays the role with winning desperation and wide eyes. But the writers, Lameece Issaq and Jacob Kader, make Abe's identity crisis superficially superficial, like a random chain of stereotypical oppositions: his Jewish grandfather encourages him to take a sip of wine during the Sabbath , while his Islamic grandparents teach him that drinking "Dulls the brain." (There is also a random confrontation in a bar mitzvah with a high school tyrant who is researching terrorism.)In his quest to reconcile these conflicts, Abe finds inspiration online in an unlikely source: a Brazilian-American pop-up led by a curious chef, Chico (Seu George), whom Abe manages to bore enough to be allowed to enter his kitchen as an intern. This opens “Abe” in another cultural - and culinary - world. But it is rendered in the same flat and uninspired way as Abe's home life. Chico's lessons are reduced to quick montages which are all revealing and not visible: Abe writes words like "synergy" and "textures" and creates flavor cards in his notebook while the camera slides with cursor over the spices and sauces and fruits, without any attempt capture the sensations of taste and smell, the succulent pleasures of cooking and the combination of new foods.Ultimately, it's not even the food that brings Abe's family together, but the fear and worry when he runs away after another confrontation. We could interpret this as a metaphor for the naive futility of Abe's plan to resolve political differences with a meal, but that would give the film's slim and inconsistent script much more merit than it deserves.AbeUnclassified.
