Reviews 018: Khruangbin / Ozo / Jorge Reyes & Antonio Zepeda
Three slabs of exotic psychedelia, spiritual jazz, and otherworldly prog on review. First up is the new Khruangbin LP on Dead Oceans, a sun-soaked desert journey into the heart of acid rock. I’m really excited something like this is coming out of Texas. Then we have another stellar reissue on Isle of Jura, the 1976 Anambra single by dub/soul/funk tribe Ozo, now updated with the excellent bonus track “Anambra River”. The overwhelming celestial power of this music cannot be overstated. The final review is of Jorge Reyes & Antonio Zepeda’s A la izquierda da Colobrí, recently given new life by Emotional Rescue. Reyes is no longer with us, but this mesmerizing combination of jungle ambiance and cosmic prog from 1986 does his memory honor.
Khruangbin - Con Todo el Mundo (Dead Oceans, 2018) This trio uses a seemingly minimal and homogenous palette of chilled breakbeats, huge melodic bass, and sun-fried acid guitar to explore spaghetti western vistas, Middle Eastern psychedelia, smooth r&b, and hard-groovin’ funk. The highlights come quick, especially “Lady and Man” as it alternates between sunshine vocal harmony led 60’s psych and more cerebral moments of eastern tinged guitar and bass interplay, before breaking down into late night vibraphones and group soul singing in that Eddie Gale way. “August 10” is heart-wrenching, with Laura Lee’s heavenly vocals dominating a slow groove with lounge bass, echoing rimshots, and gentle guitar solos reflecting golden rays of light. “Cómo Me Quieres” and “Maria También” lean heavier into the exotic textures, with surfy Omar Khorshid electric leads in head-spinning webs of Arabic scales, drums locked into juicy breaks with bongo, tambo, and claps, and big round adventurous bass guitar. And the inclusion of faraway spaced out Mellotron only heightens the strong exotica vibes. “Como Te Quiero” ends the side with aquatic vocals over slow motion west coast rock, sunset colored southern-fried soloing, and snippets of spoken Spanish and birds.

The B-side feels mellower, though the album’s meanest funk blast comes from “Evan Finds the Third Room”. The guitar licks are downright sexy, sitting alongside hooky vocal chants of “yes” and softer singing. Occasionally the track takes a turn toward ocean-eyed balearica, featuring blazing solos and a call and response between sultry spoken vocals and addictive chanting. “A Hymn” has a midnight slow dance atmosphere with soft bass drum, bongos, shakers, and tambourine jangling loosely as guitar and bass intertwine in romantic harmonization. The slightly melancholic vibe is continued by “Rules”, with the downer vibrations given emphasis by slow echoing drums and dark surf guitars glistening with occasional rays of hope. “Shades of Man” and “Friday Morning” offer different takes on a sort of silky R&B, with the former exploring the sound via sunny 60’s psychedelia and colorful conversations between guitar and bass. The latter ends the album with soft smokey vocals and twilight soloing over a gentle bongo accented beat and a locked groove of nature sounds.

Ozo - Anambra (Isle of Jura, 2017) The 12” extended mix of “Anamabra” begins on deep bell tones and the sound of wind, with a hypnotic beat rising from the depths. The ritual is joined by hand percussion that refuses to lock into the march, dancing adventurously around the mix as bells shake and cymbals swell in shimmering walls of sound. The mix builds toward an early climax, dominated by a small choir belting out in powerful cascades of spiritual harmony. The choir eventually fades, revealing meditative wood flute that is eventually joined by ecstatic chanting of the Buddhist mantra “Om Mani Padme Hum”, before the vocals and ominous bell tones build back to strength. The B-side features an edited version of “Anambra”, before diving into the “Anambra River”. Soft electric keys intone the vocal melody from “Anamabra” over a beat lead by toms, bass drum, and heartfelt vocals. The choir returns in epic cinematic power, transformed from mantric repetition into a triumphant soaring majesty. There are subtle flutes in psychedelic harmonization as “Om Mani Padme Hum” is called out yet again, less regularly and higher pitched, alongside swells of gong and foregrounded and intermittent chanting of “OM”.

Jorge Reyes & Antonio Zepeda - A la izquierda del Colibrí (Emotional Rescue, 2017) The A-side of this panoramic journey is taken up by two outerspace prog epics. “I-Caña” is introduced via mystical drones, fluttering ocarina, and an ominous near-industrial beat alongside progadelic tropical sequencing. Dreamy otherworldly flute soloing and solar pads join the futuristic space jam until big Magma choirs and heavy distorted guitar leads take us into darker parts of the sonic jungle. Increasingly active hand percussion helps the track build, until everything pulls back to reveal sky-seeking bass sequences, polysynth arps, and soft synths solos trading off with the magical flutes. For the title track, wind instruments sound like exotic birds as vocals and synthesizer create horror movie atmospherics, like being lost in a jungle pursued by unseen ghostly forces. This intro leads into a robotic staccato funk, as machine rhythms hold time with tight Pink Floyd guitars and galactic fuzz soloing. Wild electronic effects zoom through the mix and heavy lidded singing sits alongside weirdo spoken word, like Walter Wegmüller ranting over the Cosmic Couriers, but in Mexico. The track climaxes with a melancholic vocal refrain, reminding me strongly of the Far East Family Band.

Most of side B is dominated by rainforest ambiance. “El Hacedor de Lluvia” features deep space drones, spoken word, and rattling percussion and rainsticks growing in intensity. As these sounds surround the mix in an organic buzz, slow tribal drums and atonal flutes enter, only to fade out on futuristic marimba-like sequencing. “Wawaki” is a bit of evocative and flute-led forest folk, with soft mallet instruments and equatorial arps creating a sense of magic and wonder over effected jungles samples, as the percussion and whistles attempt to communicate with the flora and fauna. Then, disturbing washes of throat singing and double-tracked flutes called out in desperation, as “Lejos te Llevas el Espejo de tu Rostro” cleanses the mind with its cerebral sound bath…chimes like rain, deep timpani, until everything fades away. Closing track “Managua” leaves the jungle behind, heading instead toward outerspace exploration. There is cosmic sequencing under lysergic delay that to my mind presages the Orb’s “A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain…” and gooey resonant pads drifting through the mix like glowing clouds of gas, all over a slow plodding rhythm, cold and industrial, warmed by esoteric prog-flute melodies.

The CD has one hit after another. The CD opens with “Tributo a Ruben Blades” Ft. Gaitanes which is an appropriate homage to the man who helped get Eddie worldwide exposure with Ruben’s 80’s band. Kayvan Vega, “De Los Mejores” Ft. Victor Garcia, “El Negro Encarnacion” Ft. Marcial Isturiz, “Cemento y Arena” Ft. Hector ‘Pichie’ Perez, “Pide Lo Que Tu Quieras” Ft. Joseph Gonzalez and “Haz Tu Parte” Ft. Anthony Almonte that can all be easily major radio hits. The recording was recorded between Puerto Rico and the Bronx, New York and features some of the best that include Pedro Bermudez, Julito Alvarado, Ray Colon, Reynaldo Jorge, Piro Rodriguez, Pedro Perez, Pichie Perez, Darvel Garcia, Jorge Diaz, Sammy Velez and Eddie’s own son Jeremy Montalvo.
