Love y’all. And I love these songs, Here’s why:

Lean on me - Bill Withers : Ella’s lullaby. Vanya started singing it to her around the age of 1 when she heard it on the radio at the 7/11 while she was trying to calm a fussy Ella. She began singing along with the song as a last ditch attempt, and it surprisingly worked like a charm. Ever since then, Cara and Vanya, mostly Vanya, sing it to Ella sometimes at bedtime, substituting the words with “Mother” and “daughter” when needed. It always calms Ella down.

Hazy Shade of Winter - Gerard Way (feat. Ray Toro) : …. Duh. Plus this gets me hype for Ella being powerful and happily violent and just being a part of the Hargreeves clusterfuck. ….This just slaps.

Cold Blooded - Khalid (slowed) : So this doesn’t fit entirely, but basically to me this feels like what Vanya feels when she’s empty, sad, and just blank, but then she sees her daughter being happy. It doesn’t erase the deep sadness within her, but it strengthens the resolve that she has. She will give everything she has for her daughter, just to make sure she’s warm and happy. Also this song makes me think of Ella forcibly cuddling Vanya on the couch when she is having a bad day.

(Slowed Down) Elastic Heart - Sia : Just…. V a n y a.

Dancing with your Ghost- Sasha Sloan : This song makes me think of Vanya and Ella and Cara, being happy and dancing together and making memories, but at the same time Vanya struggles with her guilt involving her siblings. She can see them sometimes within her girl, she can see them as she makes the memories. She feels like she doesn’t deserve to be happy, because she never has. She struggles with that feeling when she feels so happy her heart could burst. This song also makes me think of the relationship between Cara and Vanya, it just makes me think of Vanya trying not to cry over something but then Cara pulls her head down to her lap and runs her fingers gently through her hair and Vanya can finally let it out and it’s peaceful and happy.

(Slowed down) I found - Amber Run : Vanya…… If the commission wins.

(Her mouth is open in a silent scream as she cradles the small body towards her, this can’t be happening, no no no nonononono not her baby-

Why aren’t they helping her- Please, she’s hurt, can’t you see-?- She can’t tell the difference between her tears and those of the heavens, between the tears on her face and the blood on her hands-)

(She is no longer herself, she is a steadily growing drum-beat of pure pain and grief and power and she is not thinking but the very earth shall pay for the blood that has spilled, HER FLESH AND BLOOD-)

Somebody That I Used To Know (slowed down) - Gotye (ft. Kimbra) : The Hargreeves siblings and Vanya, after her betrayal is revealed. They feel like they should’ve been told about Ella, even if they weren’t close to Vanya at all, which is valid. But Vanya remembers them as being cold and shitty to her and tbh she’s only telling them for Ella’s sake. Plus this song is just melodramatic and I feel like it would fit the Hargreeves in any situation. Like, I can see Klaus or Diego stubbing their toe and then having this song playing in their head. They’re all extra as hell and this song works for any betrayal.

( slowed down ) lovely - Billie Eilish (ft. Khalid) : This is honestly one of my favorite songs, especially slowed down. I just listen to it while writing because it’s beautiful. But it also kinda reminds me of Vanya and her glass wall, constantly struggling with the feeling of being trapped and being stuck within her childhood abuse. She fights against it for Ella, her beautiful Ella, who gives her hope no matter how trapped she feels. This song is just a sad bop tho. Good shit.

Night Bus (Slowed) - Gabrielle Aplin : A happier sounding bop, but still slow and chill. I know it’s about lovers, but we ain't gonna take it that way okay. 

“I’m on my way home to you for the last time” obviously doesn’t fit, because Vanya wouldn’t leave her daughter alone, ever, but this song kinda makes me think of Vanya gradually letting Ella go and letting her be her own person. Like, she’s still her mom, and this song also makes me think of the love between them. It makes me imagine Vanya watching Ella play in the park, or maybe watching her interact with the other girls at Gym, and thinking to herself “She’s got this. She’ll be okay. I don’t have to stay so close, she’ll still come back to me in the end even if I let her go.” 

Also, this song is calming but happy, instead of most of these which are calming and sad. I needed a happier song, one that made me think of hugs and playing outside and having snowball fights and happy squeals and playing tag with wide involuntary smiles and flushed cheeks. In short: ‘Tis a bop. A happy bop. Happy times.

revenge (slowed & reverb) - xxxTentacion : Makes me think of Vanya, disillusioned, believing that her siblings have known about her powers this entire time. Makes me think about her thirst for revenge, to make them feel the soul-deep infraction against her. Makes me think of Vanya being torn between keeping her daughter safe, keeping her terrified daughter comforted, and her revenge. Torn between holding the one she loves most and punishing those who were supposed to love her. It makes me think of agonizing indecision.

IMPORTANT NOTE: I don’t know if this scenario will happen in the fic! I’m not sure how things will go down, and how Vanya will find out and react to her powers. I’m making this shit up as I go! But this song made me think, “What if?”

Dollar For Your Sadness - Unlike Pluto : (They hurt her daughter, her world, her Ella, She will DESTROY them, ALL OF THEM-)

JOLT - Unlike Pluto : The lyrics perfectly describe Vanya’s eternally growing resentment, her struggle of trying to forget her childhood, her trauma, her siblings, while raising her daughter. Trying to leave the past behind so she can move on with her Ella and Cara, her real family. They’re all she has now. Aren’t they?

(Also, Jolt. Electricity. Sparks. Heh heh heh. I’m so clever.)

Villain of My Own Story - Unlike Pluto : I’m unsure of this one, not sure if it fits. Vanya getting fed up with her siblings’ muttered remarks and snide comments? (*unconvincing cough* Diego and possibly Luther) Her just going “yknow what fuck all y’all you can suck a cattapilla dick” and being angery and pissed off? Tbh I just put this song in here because I discovered Unlike Pluto yesterday and went feral. 

Maybe Vanya during the explanation, or her when she snapped at Diego? (The first time) or maybe it’s just her feeling so put down and invalidated and such a failure that she just goes “fuck this.” Vanya when Ella got bullied? It makes me think of the moments where she’s ticked off and her powers show up but just barely bc she eventually calms herself.

It makes me envision a young girl, possibly Vanya, idk, in tattered, dirty clothes, running down an alleyway in slow motion, and all I can see is the back of her hair flowing in the wind as she runs, the bottoms of her feet as she takes another step. I can see her checking behind her to see if she’s being followed, her hair whipping on her face so she can hardly see. It makes me think of frustrated anger, just an overall feeling of “FUCK THIS SHIT.”

Rocky Mountain High - John Denver : :) this is Cara’s favorite song, and my mother likes it as well :) Cara hums it a lot, and sometimes she sings it to Ella. Vanya’s not approving of it, because the song is about WEED, but she doesn’t do anything to stop it. Cara finds the hidden meaning hilarious when she sings it to the child.

everything i wanted (slowed + reverb) - Billie Eilish : Vanya has everything she needs, but she’s still drowning inside herself. Vanya has everything, yet she still feels so so dead. But Cara holds her, smelling like forest leaves, and Ella smiles at her, looking like beautiful starlight, and they make it better. They will always make it better, and she loves them.

The Phoenix - Lindsey Sterling : Ella. Ella, dancing in the air. Ella, hugging her mother tightly. Ella, sweet, gentle Ella- bright as the sun itself, Ella, powerful Ella. Ella, her happy light infecting everyone she meets, Ella, her excitement emerging in response to every new thing she encounters. Beautiful, beautiful, chaotic Ella- adjusting reality with a twitch of her finger. Ella, summoning a tornado full of destructive everyday things with a single tantrum. Music Monday (8-12-19)

This past week was a one-two-sucker punch of brand new music. We’ve got lots to cover, so let’s not waste any more time. 

New Releases

Charlie by Mallrat: Wanna bop but also feel hella melancholy while doing it? Then I’ve got the song for you! This song balances contemplative lyrics over sunny, snappy production, and it’s a great chill Summer jam. It looks like we’re going to get a new EP from Mallrat in the near future, and I can’t wait to see what she brings on it. 

Season Of The Witch by Lana Del Rey: Is it Halloween already? Lana really  brings on the spooky vibes with this cover track, a little something to tide us fans over until Norman Fucking Rockwell finally drops. It gives me Ultraviolence and Lust for Life vibes, I dig this a lot. 

Black Sheep by Kailee Morgue: Kailee Morgue pivots down a more rock/electronic route with this new track, the instrumental is dappled with walls of distorted guitars, buzzy synths, and pulsing drums. Her vocals sound amazing here, flitting through the melody with ease. I’m here for all the dark pop songs we’ve been getting recently from acts like Morgue, Charlotte Lawrence, Hayley Kiyoko, and Lola Blanc, it feels like the music scene is gearing up for a witchy renaissance. 

hand solo by Marika Hackman: An indie rock bop about... self love, let’s call it. With a solid plucked bass line, sharp and witty lyrics, and a breezy vocal delivery from Hackman, this song is a real pleasure. 

I’m just going to do an album rundown now lmao, this past week was INSANE for album releases.

The new Regrettes album How Do You Love? is a lot of fun! It takes the riot grrrl rock attitude of their last album and mixes in a healthy dose of head-over-heels-in-love pop enthusiasm. “I Dare You” is still my favorite song on the album by far, and my only complaint is that “Coloring Book” sucks up some momentum from the album, (I think it might have benefited from a later placement,) but the album has no trouble picking up speed again. Overall it’ll make you want to dance around your bedroom while singing into a hairbrush.  

Now, Now Yet by half•alive is a quirky little indie album with some grooving tunes. “still feel.” still shines months after its initial release, being one of the stickiest and most infectious tracks this album has to offer. Another favorite of mine is “ice cold.” with Kimbra, which is a laid-back tune with some bouncy pianos and vocals on Kimbra’s part. Fans of acts like Declan McKenna, Wallows, and Twenty One Pilots will probably dig this, so check it out!

i,i by Bon Iver is here, so it’s officially Autumn now, I’m sorry, that’s just how it works. I listened to this album so many times this past weekend, and I got swept up in the atmosphere of it every time, especially with the song “Faith.” I don’t know what it is I like so much about this album, half the time I can’t even make out what Justin Vernon is saying but he still manages to speak directly to my soul. 

Other Favorites

Crying All the Time by Alexandra Savior: I found out about this song through a request on my lyric edit blog, (@taste-in-lyrics, shameless self plug,) and now I’ve got Alexandra Savior’s debut, Belladonna of Sadness on my to-listen-to list. I love her vintage, old-school femme fatale rock vibe, it’s like Ultraviolence era Lana meets Amy Winehouse. Thanks @xxkatarzyna for turning me on to this artist!

A Little Bit by Dusky Grey: Dusky Grey are a super underrated pop duo that have so many danceable tracks that I’ve lost count. This is one of my favorites, and I added to my Summer playlist as soon as the chorus hit. Those watery synths are just so fun and summery, the vocals are great, (especially from Catrin Hopkins,) and this song is overall a giant bop.

this poem is genuinely amazing. it’s so good holy shit this is a great precursor to the album and like hype. 9.5/10

California Friends

i didn’t even know this song was going to be on this album and i’m so glad it is. it fits in really fucking well and it’s a whole bop. the guitar really drives the song while lydia’s vocals and the drums and bass both complement it really well. 10/10

I Dare You

light and fluffy with a goos guitar riff? yes please. also lyrics are really fuckin good??? good dance bop. 9.7/10

Colouring Book

i like the warmth of the guitar and lydia’s vocals really go with the warmth. AND THEN THE CHORUS wow. it’s good. i love. AMD THE BACKGROUND VOCALS IN THE SECOND VERSE!!!! holy shit i love this song. 9/10

Fog

OH DAMN THE BASS!!! i love this. i didn’t know what to expect from this song but like WOW OK, THANKS GUYS. i love the chorus so much and it’s got a thing that just sticks, man. i was dancing in a dumpster to this song and that’s rare for me to do so it’s really good, obviously. 10/10

Pumpkin

they released this on valentine’s day and like still a solid ass song. the prechorus and chorus really carried the song and the bass is pretty simple. 8.7/10

Stop and Go

oh yes. sounds like a voice memo and i love that homemade shit at the beginning. then it goes like “lol nope we goin pro now, bitches.” i really love this song. i also danced in the dumpster to this song. chorus is really fucking a bop! IT’S SO FUN TO DANCE TO! 10/10

Dress Up

yep. riff, lyrics, back vocals, drums, bass? amazing. i loved this song as soon as i heard it and the chorus feels like a “FUCK YEAH BITCH” then the drive on the guitar and crunch? fan-fucking-tastic. 9/10

Dead Wrong

oh damn! ok lydia just snapped and yes please, thank you. a whole bop; prechorus has this droning in the background for a bit with just vocals and the chorus is really fuckin good, i swear to you. 10/10

More than a Month

i heard this song and i ALMOST sent it to an ‘old friend’. really fucking good; it’s super energetic and it’s amazing! it’s a striaght up banger. 11/10

Go Love You

i felt like the beginning of this was a bit awkward but it’s still a good song. the verses are totally solid. the chorus is nice af and prechorus works really fucking good. 8.9/10

Here You Go

BASS is STRONG AF. Keys sound really nice and is a good contrast to the ‘grittiness’ of the rest of the instruments. Lydia has solid fucking vocals and lyrics and i am LIVING! a good song to dance in your room to. 9/10

The Game

not the Queen album but still good - i’m kidding - it’s fucking amazing. HOLY SHIT! it’s mainly just pretty chill for the most part. but the chorus just goes full out and the drive on the guitar is turned WAYYY up and i have been given life. 10/10

Has It Hit You?

Am I in love? maybe. this song starts off STRONGGGGG very much grittiness in there and distortion. but lydia’s vocals are a really pleasant contrast to the static-like instruments. the drums Drew did are really fucking outstanding. 10/10

How Do You Love?

I don’t really know... it jumps STRIAGHT (haha) in. it’s mainly the speaker observing others in love and this is a great ending track and it really pulls the album together. Genessa’s guitar is SOLID AF. 9/10

Now, Not Yet (half•alive)

ok ok?

goes from UP THERE to down here. it’s really strong and loud and then it calms down and the vocals are like heavenly. wow. chorus is just... wow, i can’t describe it; it’s just really fucking good. super strong start to the album. 11/10

RUNAWAY

this song, man. my dad likes this song and he never likes my music unless it’s Queen or Led Zepplin or another 80’s rock band. Josh Taylor really knocked out of the park with the vocals like holy shit some of the theatre kids would be jealous. 11/10

Maybe

fUnkY bASs. also SYNTHHHHH and the whole general vibe of the song is very warm and vibrant. it’s kinda like 80’s synth pop with all the shit going on and yep, it’s good. a bop to damce to. 9/10

the notion

who dis? 36 seconds of someone speaking. nice accent, very hot. 8/10

still feel.

one of the first songs i heard from them. THAT BASS THO!!!! it’s groovy and a bop also the music video is lit. overall a good song and a bop. i’m still raving about the bass line tho.

TrusT

it builds and swells. a trumpet comes in amidst the chaos and then it goes bye bye. then it comes back like taylor swift does every album cycle. Keys? BEAUTIFUL! Bass is still strong af. flows really gooder and it’s lovely. 10/10

arrow

a bop. calm then it does the bass thingy and it goes into this tambourine, bass, vocal, (and eventually) guitar thing and the guitar fits in really well even if it came in later than the others. the guitar parts are always nice and simple; the bass just slaps (literally). 11/10

Pure Gold

it’s a really good listen and the bridge is really good and it really grabs your attention if you haven’t been paying much at all. the beginning of the song is absolutely phenomenal. the verses and prechorus are really fan-fucking-tastic. i love them. the chorus is just drums and synth sounds with a really low bass voice and it’s lit af. 9/10

ice cold (feat. Kimbra)

uhhhh... it took me a minute but i warmed up to it. the beginning gave me a bit of whiplash after hearing Taylor’s voice for the past 30 minutes. Kimbra really works well for this track tho and half•alive used her talent really well. the rapping was a very pleasant and welcome surprise. 8/10

EDIT: this is literally my new favourite song on this album. 11/10

Rest (feat. Samm Henshaw)

i love the intro to this song. it’s so chill, ya know? chorus is really good with the loudness and shit; it’s really fucking good. the spoken/rap parts are also really good. lyrics are also really good. Henshaw comes in after the second verse and his verse is really good. wow. 9/10

BREAKFAST

starts off strong with the synth vocals and Taylor’s voice just lays ontop of them then an acoustic guitar comes in and it’s starts to come together and it sounds vvv nice. it’s a really chilled and laid back song. 9/10

creature

calm then the synths came in and then more NOISE came in and then the acoustic guitar and Taylor’s vocals, holy shit they’re fucking spot on!! the chorus is also CHAOS!! it’s mostly chill until it’s a bit chaotic and loud and that’s how i like my music. 10/10

In conclusion:

How Do You Love? by The Regrettes:

a very good follow up album to ‘Feel You Feelings Fool!’ it’s really good. 9.87/10

i highly recommend this to anyone in the alternative/indie/rock/punk scenes.

Now, Not Yet. by half•alive:

really solid freshman album. the first half is really strong but i felt like it faltered a little in the backhalf. still solid af and i can’t wait to see where they go next! 9.67/10

last band t-shirt i bought: usually merchandising is very expensive and i dont have the money to accommodate that, but like. i do recall having a wiggles shirt when i was five. i wore it all the time, shjdjgsksd im sure that counts

last band i saw live: i almost went to splendor in the grass last year with family, which wasn't only cool since i’ve never been out of the state since i immigrated - the festival was in queensland, which is around a two hour flight from victoria - but the lineup was pretty fuckin lit too! the xx, haim, peking duk, tash sultana, future islands, vallis alps, a.b original,, i was p excited! unfortunately my uncle fell ill and so they had to give the tickets to extended family :( otherwise, i haven't been to a single concert in my life

last three tv shows i watched: if aggretsuko counts that’s the last series i watched of my own volition, which is a miracle in itself considering that’s legit only the second anime i’ve watched to completion (the first being shirokuma cafe, which i probably need to re-watch). otherwise, the last two shows i had beared witness to were thirteen reasons why and queer eye bc my cousin put them on! that first show i could completely do without but queer eye is iconique
