Hey Jay, Is Everything Really Going To Be Okay?
Recently in social media, there has been discourse about OPM songs about the LGBTQIA+ community and how it has affected the view and treatment of the said community. The discourse revolved around famous songs like “Titibo-tibo” by Moira or “Sirena” by Gloc-9, in which netizens shared the impact of these songs on their lives and expression as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community, may it be positive or negative. Other songs were also analyzed such as “This Guy’s In Love With You, Pare” by Parokya ni Edgar and “Ituloy Mo Lang” by Siakol. While these songs are great points of discourse, let’s delve deeper into the song “Hey Jay” by Eraserheads and its impact.
Eraserheads, one of the most famous and influential bands in Philippine music history, create songs that capture and reflect aspects of Filipino life and culture, such as “Alapaap” and “Minsan”. Among their iconic discography, "Hey Jay" explores themes related to identity, acceptance, and most importantly, discrimination towards the LGBTQIA+ community. The song tells the story of Jay, a young man struggling with his sexual orientation and the societal pressures that come with it. Released in the late 1990s, I would say that the song was ahead of its time, tackling these issues during a time when the LGBTQIA+ was heavily discriminated against.

The verses of the song show the treatment towards the LGBTQIA+ community members such as Jay. These treatments can range from physical abuse to straight-up neglect due to someone’s sexual identity. The sad reality is: that although this song was written decades ago, these lyrics still reflect the truth in our country. In 2016, 75 percent of LGBT children reported physical abuse, and 78.5 percent experienced psychological abuse.

The song also tackles the prevalent gender inequalities during their time. But, until now, there are still no laws that protect the human rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. There are still no laws that punish individuals and corporations for discriminating against someone due to their gender. Bills such as the SOGIE Bill are still not being passed due to the controversies surrounding it in a country where the upholding of religion is much more prioritized than the protection of the well-being and the rights of people regardless of their sexual and gender identity.

It conveys a sense of optimism that tomorrow will be better for people like Jay who experience discrimination. These lyrics show that despite the difficulties of the present, there is hope for a future where individuals like Jay can live authentically and without fear. 
Though written during a time when LGBTQIA+ was seen as a mockery, Eraserheads showcased a glimmer of progressiveness. The song is a reminder of the power of music to influence people and how music can convey a message of change and hope: hope that for people like Jay, things will get better. Sadly, these lyrics still reflect the reality that the community faces even after decades. The community still experiences discrimination and inequalities, and it remains unclear for people like Jay when “everything is going to be okay”.

I rarely listen to OPM nowadays because most songs are... well, not a gem, tbh, but this is the first time I have listened to the full version of this song. I remember listening to this years ago and it was only the chorus and I remembered I was trying not to cry in public, so I made note to get the full song but forgot all about it when I went home, and only now did I remember to get the full song
For the non-Filipino listeners, I made a translation below the cut. The song is about the struggles of a child who grew up to be gay and was constantly abused by his father

Ang LGBTQ+ ay nangangahulugan ng iba’t ibang gender at sexuality na nagrerepresenta sa mga titik na ito. Ang LGBTQ+ ay madalas din na ginagamit ng tao para sa pagtukoy ng iba’t ibang grupo katulad na lamang ng mga sumusunod:
Lesbian
Gay
Bisexual
Transgender
Queer or questioning
At iba pa
Sa henerasyon ngayon, ang LGBTQ+ ang madalas bukang bibig ng mga tao dahil ang mga kasapi nito ay mas nagiging bukas o lantad sa kanilang kilos. Dahil na rin dito, mas nalalaman nila ang kanilang karapatan at mas mapoprotektahan sila sapagkat malalaman nila kung sila ay naagrabyado. 
Sa Pilipinas ngayon, mas bukas na ang tao sa ganitong kaisipan. Dahil na rin sa mga sikat na TV personalities o artista katulad nila Vice Ganda, Bretman Rock, Charice Pempengco o Jake Zyrus at iba pa. Hindi tulad noon na ginagawang kahihiyan at ginagawang pangkutsa ang pagiging bakla o kasapi ng LGBTQ+. Nagbago rin ang kaisipan at pagtanggap ng mga Pilipino sa Musika o kanta. Dati, ang mga kanta tulad ng “Chicksilog” at “Gayuma” ay hindi kontrebersyal at hindi nakakasakit sa iba. Samantalang ngayon, ang kantang “Awit may lawit” ay pinaguusapan dahil ang lyrics nito ay nakakasakit at nakakabastos sa katangian ng LGBTQ+. Bakit nga ba nag-iba ang paningin at nararamdaman ng tao sa paglipas ng panahon?
Ayon kay Garcia noong 2004, ang pagkakaroon ng pangatlong kasarian sa Pilipinas ay nagmula pa noong pagdating at pananakop ng mga Kastila taong 1521. Sinabi rin niyang magmula noon, simula ng taong 1960s pataas ang sinasabing pag-umpisa ng paggamit ng tinatawag natin sa kasalukuyang ‘gay lingo’. Sa pagtapos ng 1980s, nagsi-usbungan ang iba’t ibang organisasyon at pagsasama patungkol sa pagpapatibay ng karapatan ng mga taong nabibilang sa ikatlong kasarian o ang mga ‘LGBTQ community’. 
Subalit maraming Pilipino ang suportado at inirerespeto ang komunidad na ito, higit na nakararami ang mga heteronormatibo o ang mga taong hindi sang-ayon at ayaw tanggapin ang mga kabilang sa nasabing komunidad. Marami ang ginagawang katatawanan at libangan ang pagkukutsa sa mga bakla, tomboy atbp. na makikita sa iba’t-ibang paraan. Isa na rito ay sa mga kantang patungkol sa komunidad na sumikat at sumisikat sa bansa. Mayroong mga negatibo ang ipinapahayag patungkol sa ikatlong kasarian, ngunit mayroon din namang respetado ito. 
Masasabi kung gaano katanggap ng mga Pinoy ang ‘LGBTQ community’ base sa kanilang reaksyon sa mga kantang patungkol sa mga ito. Ilang halimbawa ng awitin patungkol sakanila ay ang ‘Modelong Charing’ ni Blakdyak na inilabas noong 1997, ‘Chicksilog’ ng Kamikazee noong 2009, at ‘Gayuma’ ni Abra noong 2012. Ang mensahe at laman ng mga kantang ito ay ang estereotipikong pagtingin ng karamihan ng tao na ang mga bakla ay nagdadamit-babae upang makapagpa-ibig ng lalaki. 
Ang mga kantang ito ay positibong tinanggap at tinangkilik ng sambayanan na siyang nagpapakita na sa panahong inilabas ang mga kantang ito, marami ang mga Pilipino ang heteronormatibo at hindi nirerespeto at tanggap ang komunidad. Sa napapanahong pagbabago ng mga istilo, tema, at pagiging malikhain ng mga pinoy sa paglikha ng mga kanta na ani mo’y nagiging “national anthem.” Michael V., Parokya ni Edgar, Kamikazee, atbp., ay nag ambag at nagpapatuloy mag ambag sa mga depiksyon ng mga bading sa kanilang mga kantang inilalabas. Dahil sa mga kilalang pangalan na ito ay nagkakaroon ng stereotyping sa mga bading sa Pilipinas. 
Sa kabilang aspeto naman, ang kanta ng Gloc-9 na Sirena noong 2012 ay pinahiwatig nila base sa perspektibo ng isang gay sa kanyang pinag daananan niya sa pag-tanggap sa sarili niya at sa  na abuso sa sarili niyang tatay. Mas nakikita ang ideya nila doon sa kanilang music video, sabi ni Aristotle Pollisco, na ang nag tulak sa kanilang pagsulat nito ay ang sabi ni na wala pa kantang umiikot sa perspektibo ng mga gay, kundi mga pangtrip lang at sa pangatlong tao lang ang perspektibo.
Ang kanta ay umikot sa mga pinagdaanan niya sa pag unawa niya sa sarili niya na iba siya kumpara sa ibang lalaki. Ang mga verse ay umiikot sa pag unawa sa sarili niya  at kanyang mga karanasan  sa kanyang pag laki bilang isang LGBT. Sa unang verse ineexplore ang kanyang kabataan sa kanyang mga pag galaw, sa action at mga gamit katulad ng pag suot niya ng mga make-up at damit ng nanay niya. 
Ang “This Guy’s In Love with You Pare” ng Parokya ni Edgar ay nagpapakita ng kalambutan ng isang lalaki sa kapwa niyang lalaki. Madalas ang kantang ito ay napapakinig sa isang tropahan ng mga lalake na wari mo ay nagbibiruan o kung hindi naman ay pang asar sa mga bakla na maaaring meron o walang gusto sa kaparehas na kasarian. Ang “Chicksilog” ng Kamikazee ay ipinapakita ang nagpapanggap na babae sa mga online games ngunit sa totoong buhay ay hindi pala. Mapait ,masalimuot, at paasa, kung iisipin, ang konteksto ng kanta. Isang bakla na nakahanap ng lalaking may interes sakanya sa pamamagitan ng pagsasama nila sa online game ngunit ng sakanilang personal pagkikita o “eyebol” ay inayawan noong lalaki dahil parehas sila ng kasarian. Kumbaga nakakababa sa paningin sa sarili ang nangyari. Nagpapakita ang kanta ng biktima ng “trap” at lumalabas itong homophobic kung titignan sa sitwasyon ng bakla.
 “Hindi Ako Bakla” ni Michael V. ay umani din ng atensyon sa publiko. ‘Di man kotrobersyal ang kanta pero nagpapakita ng pagiging stereotype sa mga bading sa lipunan. Nakikita ang iba’t ibang katangian ng pagiging bakla sa kanta. Ang “swardspeak” ay makikita sa liriko ng kanta, ang nais ng bading na maging at isabuhay ang kanyang pagiging babae sa kaloob-looban, ang katarayan at kamalditahan minsan ng bakla ay matatagpuan din.
Ngunit sa kalaunan, ang mga kanta na homophobic at stereotypical sa mga bakla noon ay paunting-unting nagbabago sa pag usad ng oras at mga suportang natanggap ng mga bakla sa lipunan.
Sa paglipas ng mga taon, nakikita sa mga Pilipinong kanta, o ang tinatawag na OPM, ang mga pagbabago sa pagpuna ng lipunan patungo sa mga LGBTQ+. Malayo na ang narating nito, sa tulong ng industriya ng musika, at unti-unti nang nababawasan ang pag-kakitid ng mga utak. Mula sa tulong ng mga LGBTQ+ influencers at mga artista, lumago ang komunidad natin sa ibang pananaw. Ang mga kanta ngayon ay di na lamang mga kanta. Ang mga liriko ay nagbibigay ng mga mensahe at napapakinggan natin sila, di lang gamit ang tenga kundi pati ang isip. Kahit na ang mga estereotipo, pagkiling at diskriminasyon sa mga miyembro ng LGBTQ+ ay nangyayari parin sa Pilipinas, mabuti at ang pag-unlad ay mangingibabaw sa masama. Ang pag-unlad, kahit kaunti, ay isang hakbang patungo sa mas magandang kinabukasan.

OPM or “Original Pinoy Music” refers to music made in the Philippines regardless of the language used to write the lyrics. Sometimes we call any music made by a Filipino artist as OPM haha. Pinoy bands may choose to write songs in various languages. However, songs with Tagalog and English lyrics tend to be more popular, especially in Manila, because those two are the dominant languages. The language barrier and stigma towards regional languages are also problems faced by musicians who choose to write music in their native language. Spotify is definitely your best friend if you find yourself liking OPM.

Eto kung nagtataka kayo kung bakit nabuo ang Sirena. Wala pala tayong kanta sa Pilipinas na mula mismo sa perspektibo ng mga LGBTQ. Nagsaliksik din ako at gulat ako wala talaga!!! 
Kaya eto pagsusuri ko rito (huwaw may pagsusuri, naghahanda na ako sa pangalawang debate… pagbigyan xD) Bigyan nyo na rin ako ng komento baka madagdag ko sa argumento ko sa susunod!
Anong implikasyon ng kawalan ng kantang OPM na nakapokus sa nararamdaman, iniisip, at nararanasan ng mga bakla, tomboy, at iba pa? 
simple lang: ang kultura natin ay bulag at bingi sa mga hinaing nila… WALA SILANG BOSES. LITERAL NA WALANG BOSES. 
Bago ang Sirena, wala silang entablado sa OPM kung saan pwede nilang maihatid ang mga mensaheng
 “tanggapin niyo kami, magkakapareho lang tayong tao”, 
“sana magkaroon din kayo ng pagkakataong makilala kami, mabubuti kaming nilalang”, 
“hayaan niyo naman kaming magmahal ng kung sinong gusto naming mahalin kasi minsan na nga lang kami makatanggap ng pagmamahal sa mundong ‘to”
Mahalaga na mula sa perspektibo nila galing yung mensahe kasi SILA ang nakararanas ng mga ito. SILA ang nahihirapan at SILA lang din ang mismong makakapaglarawan kung anong klaseng labis na sakripisyo ang kailangan nilang pagdaanan araw-araw.  Boses lang naman hinihingi nila. At siguro konting oras ng pakikinig mula sa atin. 
Narinig sila ni gloc-9. sabi niya (ayon sa: https://www.pep.ph/guide/music/10869/gloc-9-reveals-inspiration-behind-his-song-sirena-which-tackles-gay-issues), marami siyang kakilalang miyembro ng komunidad ng LGBTQ sa Binangonan, kung saan siya lumaki. mga umuuwi na ng hatinggabi para magtrabaho para sa pamilya, mga mababait na marunong rumespeto sa mga tao… kaya walang rason na hindi natin sila respetuhin pabalik,, TAMA O TAMA?

Day 7 of #BuwanNgMgaAkdangPinoy is inspired by yesterday’s update: MUSIC (Click here for Chino Singson’s Essay) and my choice is one of the most pleasantly surprising musical discovery I had in the past few years: 
Gloc-9′s MKMM: Mga Kwento ng Mga Makata (2012, Universal records Philippines)
I am not a rap fan, Pinoy or otherwise, but I do enjoy entertaining wordplay especially when they spark discourse on social issues as a plus. I also acknowledge Gloc-9′s talent and his superb writing skills but before this album, I can’t claim to have actually sought out his music to listen to.
And then ‘Sirena’ came out. 
A well-thought rap song about being a homosexual in the Philippines. And a popular one, too. It was like an anomaly in the genre because I’ve heard more diss and ridicule to LGBT when it came to rap music but this was a genuinely nice work of art to shed some light on an issue is target market openly refused to even think about. 
It shattered stereotypes not only because of the LGBT theme, but also because the representation of the titular Sirena is neither trivialized, nor watered-down, so unlike all the other attempts in PH mainstream media where the gays are only there for comic relief or exploitation. She is a campy, cross-dressing bakla that even the gay community in the PH sticks their noses up at, but she is also kind and caring and ugh, forgiving. Whole-heartedly.

Yan ang tawag natin sa mga Gay ng LGBT Community.

Makikita natin sila sa halos lahat ng antas at sektor ng lipunan. Halos lahat tayo ay may kakilala o kaibigang bakla. Ilan sa atin, may kaanak pa. Pero ano nga ba ang bakla? Sila ay mga lalake na naaakit sa kapwa lalaki. Galawgaw, mahinhin o tahimik, naka-make-up man at nakapalda o macho at maskulado, naniniwala man siyang isa siyang babae na nakukulong sa katawan ng lalaki, tanggap man niya sa sarili o hindi, kapag kursunada niya ang kapwa lalaki kaysa babae, siya ay bakla.
Matagal na ang mga bakla sa Pilipinas. Bago pa man dumating ang mga Kastila, may mga lalaki na sa lipunan na nagbibihis babae, nanggagamot at ginagalang sa mga katutubong komunidad. Babaylan o catalonan ang tawag sa kanila. Nang dumating ang mga Kastila, ang tawag sa kanila ay bayiguin, bayoc at binabae. Laking gulat ng mga kastila dahil bawal daw ito sa reliyon ng mga Katoliko. Ayon kay Garcia (2004) dito nagsimula ang diskriminasyon sa mga bakla sa Pilipinas. Pagkatapos ng giyera laban sa mga Hapon, nauso ang salitang siyoke. Noong dekada otsenta, bansag naman sa kanila ay badaf. Matagal na ang pederasyon o ang tawag ng mga bakla sa kanilang komunidad. Sa pangkalahatan, hinahayaan lang ng lipunang Pilipino ang mga bakla -- minsan pinagtatawanan, minsan hindi sineseryoso pero mayroon pa rin na hindi sila tanggap.

Nakikita natin ang mga bakla na masaya, maingay, parang walang problema o pakialam sa mundo. Ang hindi natin alam ay ang pang-araw-araw na buhay ng marami sa kanila na nahaharap sa hirap at diskriminasyon, kahit na sa mismong pamilya nila.
Nang inilabas ang kantang “Sirena” ng rapper na si Gloc 9 mula sa kanyang album na “Mga Kwento ng Makata” noong 2012, marami ang nagulat at namulat, lalo’t ito’y ipinatugtog sa radyo at telebisyon na napakalawak ng naaabot.

Inilarawan kasi sa kanta niya ang pisikal na hirap na dinanas ng isang lalaki mula pagkabata hanggang sa naging binata -- o dalaga, ang sabi sa awit -- sa kamay ng kanyang ama. Hindi kasi matanggap ng kanyang tatay na isa siyang bakla. Bukod sa bugbog, nilulublob din ng tatay ang kanyanjg anak sa dram ng tubig. Sa isang banda, pwedeng naniniwala siya na malilinis ang kanyang anak sa pagiging bakla. Sa kabilang banda, tila niyakap ng lalaki ang parusa at ikinumpara ang sarili sa isang sirena, na lalong nagtulak sa kanya na paninidgan ang pagiging bakla.  
Sa simula palang ng music video ay nakikita na natin na habang inaabuso ng tatay ang bakla niyang anak ay pinagtatawanan sila ng mga lasing nilang kapitbahay. Nang linulublob ng tatay ang kanyang anak ay walang kibo ang mga naglalaba kahit muntik na mamatay ang bakla.
Ngunit sa harap ng pananakit at panggabuso ay tiniis ito ng bakla. Sa hulihan siya pa nga ang natira para alagaan ang kanyang tatay na nagkacancer. Dito rin natanggap ng tatay ang kanyang anak kung sino siya. Humingi siya ng tawad sa lahat ng kanyang nagawa sa kanya at itinawag pa niya ang kanyang anak na mas lalaki pa sa lalki. Ang ibig sabihin nito ay buong tapang tiniis at pinanindig ang pagiging bakla. Kahit abusin, pagtawan o saktan siya ay tila hinarap niya ito ng nakataas ang ulo at hindi nahihiya kung sino siya.
Ang pagiging bakla sa Pilipinas ay tinotolerate natin pero hindi pa natin masyado tinatanggap sa lipunan. Ang pagiging bakla ay hindi gaano pinaguusapan noon ngunit tinotolerate sila.
Ang ating tolerance sa mga bakla ay nagsimula noong panahan na sinakop tayo ng mga Espanyol. Malaki ang impluwensya ng mga Espanyol sa Pilipinas kaya hindi natin masyado tinatanggap ang mga bakla. Nagsimula lang lumuwag ito ng dumating ang mga Amerikano. Wala silang mga batas na nagbabawal sa pagiging bakla. Hindi pa rin natin natatanggap ang mga bakla sa ating lipunan dahil sa impluwensya ng mga Espanyol ngunit na titiis natin sila dahil rin sa impluwensya ng mga Amerikano.
Ayon kay Michal Peletz (2009), sa kanyang libro Gender Pluralism: Southeast Asia Since the Early Modern Times, “that in the early modern period and earlier times as well many communities of Southeast Asians accorded enormous prestige to male bodied individual who dressed in female attire and performed certain rituals associated with royal regalia, births, weddings, and key phrases of agricultural cycles”. (2009, p. 22).
Makikita natin sa music video na kahit ganoon ang trato ng tatay sa kanyang anak ay buong tapang na ipinagpapatuloy ng anak ang pagiging bakla. Yun kasi ang nararamdaman niya na gusto niya. Base sa korus:

nakikita natin na kahit ilang beses subukan sirain ang mga bakla ay babalik at babalik sila. Hindi natin sila kaya sirain o patahimikin kasi titiisin nila ito hanggang matanggap ng lipunan sila.
Base sa aking karanasan noong Highskool ay nagaral ako sa isang exklusibong Katolikong all-boys na paaralan. Marami akong nakilalang mga bakla na tinuturi ko bilang mga kaibigan. Nasanay ako sa mga galaw at kilos nila. Tinatanggap ko sila kung sino sila kahit ang mga iba ay tinutukso ang kanilang sekswalidad.
Natutunan ko sa kanila na sa bawat lalaki ay may konting kababaihan na kilos o galaw na minsan inaangkop ko sa aking sarili. Halata man o hindi, malaki man o maliit ang pagpapakita ay napansin ko ito sa mga kaklase ko, hindi lang sa mga bakla kundi na rin sa mga lalaki.
Ganoon rin ang tingin ko sa mga babae na may konting kalalakihan rin sila. Napansin ko ito sa babaeng kapatid ko na nagaaral sa all-girls na paaralan. Sa lakad niya at kung makipagaway ay nanununtok rin minsan.
Tinatanggap ko man sila ay may pagkakataon na kung saan ako ay tumututol. Ito ay  ang same-sex marriage. Naniniwala pa rin ako na ang lalaki ay para sa babae lamang at ang babae ay para sa lalaki lamang ngunit hindi naman ako tumututol sa pagkakaroon ng kasintahan.
Tanging hiling nila ay pantay na karapatan at oportunidad, at proteksyon laban sa mga mapang-abuso at mapanghusga na tao.

Sirena [Mermaid] by GLOC-9
I am a mermaid. Whatever they say, I’m very, very* beautiful. I am a mermaid. Whatever they do, my flag will not fall. A drum full of water is what I plunge into; Big, muscular arms regularly hit** me. A drum full of water is what I plunge into; In a breathing contest, my skills will amaze you. Ever since I was young, it was obvious whenever I was playing games. Everyone is so confused, because I am good in Chinese Garter and Hopscotch. My lips are a pure red, because of the bubblegum that I’ve been chewing on. Walking back and forth, in front of the mirror, telling myself: “They have nothing on me.” While my hips sway, my earrings dangle. Using the powder I bought from old lady Bebang, I cover up the bruises on my face made by my father who doesn’t seem very happy because every time he sees me, I get hit. As time passed by, I didn’t notice that instead of getting harder, my loving heart keeps getting softer just like curled lashes. I am a mermaid. Whatever they say, I’m very, very* beautiful. I am a mermaid. Whatever they do, my flag will not fall. A drum full of water is what I plunge into; Big, muscular arms regularly hit** me. A drum full of water is what I plunge into; In a breathing contest, my skills will amaze you. Until I became a teenage boy— Oops, that was wrong—I am teenage girl; why does it seem like everyone is still confused? What is really your problem? Is it the fact that I act differently from what your eyes expected to see? Every time I watch a basketball league, I always stare; Even if they don’t make the shots, I’m still enjoying the game. Callouses of bravery formed all over, because that’s how much I have been hit with pipes, never mind if it’s rusty. Enough, father, I will not be disobedient anymore; I promise not to wear mother’s old skirts anymore. Whenever I feel like crying, I charge towards the rain, Thinking I maybe was just adopted, since I get hit every day, with no fail. I am a mermaid. Whatever they say, I’m very, very* beautiful. I am a mermaid. Whatever they do, my flag will not fall. A drum full of water is what I plunge into; Big, muscular arms regularly hit** me. Years passed. All my siblings got married and lived so far away that they couldn’t be bothered to visit. Father, it’s time to eat; the table’s already set. I support him as he takes one step at a time, his arms frail and thin, where it used to be bulky and muscular. For your birthday, I will try to replace that sadness in your heart; let us not look back anymore, even if you’re a little annoyed— not because you have cancer, but because the person taking care of you is wearing a skirt. One night, you called me, so I approached and stayed by your side. You held my hand, and even if it was difficult to speak, you said: I’m sorry for everything that I’ve done, the mustache on your face shouldn’t be the basis of your bravery, because sometimes, gay men are more manly than straight men.

Whatever they do, my flag will not fall.  * very, very: ubod, the word used in the song, means more like an “as fuck” than very, very. the attitude it connotes is not conveyed by ‘very, very’, so the more appropriate term is af. lol. ** the word literally means pulverized, but in context, it means being battered, so I used hit. :)
