tbh i think a lot of the criticism towards “art for art’s sake” is actually more of a criticism of nihilism than the stated idea itself
#to me the most cogent critique of ''art for art's sake'' is walter benjamin's#but even then he's characterizing 'art for art's sake'' as some kind of attempt to turn ''beauty'' into a political idea#when i think ultimately it has nothing to do with that#the socialist/communist critique is really just a rehash of plato's beef with art writ large#art#literature#writing#text
