Minamoto no Yoshitsune
The basics:
The enigmatic leader of the rebel forces, Yoshitsune is a quiet and melancholy man in his everyday life...yet an absolute demon on the battlefield. Betrayed by his half-brother and left for dead, Yoritomo, Yoshitsune has sworn to fight back against the shogunate not merely for revenge's sake, but to carve out a place of safety for those people who rely on him.
The pact he formed with Kurama - saving his life at the expense of his soul one day - grants him powers above and beyond those of a normal human, although Yoshitsune scarcely would need them to be a formidable threat in a fight to begin with. He is an 'old soul' as one might say, exhibiting an almost child-like innocence at times juxtaposed against his hardened battle mien and his keen intuition. An extraordinarily talented warrior, he inspires those that follow him to war with his fearless ferocity...and unsettles others with his uncanny insight.
The Spoilery Stuff:
Yoshitsune shares a father with Yoritomo, one they both lost at a young age to the conflict between the Minamoto and the Taira. Both boys were miraculously spared their lives, an oddity for the children of a defeated leader, but that does not mean either of them grew up easily either. Where Yoritomo was exiled to Izu, Yoshitsune's beautiful mother found a place for herself as a concubine to those same people who killed her husband, taking up with the Taira out of desperation.
Soon though the young boy was sent away from even her, cast adrift with no sense of identity and unwanted. Yoshitsune himself says he has scarcely any memory of either of his parents. From the time he was very small, he'd attracted the unwanted attention of ayakashi, culminating in his meeting Kurama as a child - Kurama claims that Yoshitsune has a soul that hovers somewhere between a human and an ayakashi. Born almost a bit of both, he might have been devoured by one long ago if not for the protection of Kurama, who claims he was drawn to Yoshitsune's brilliant soul and wishes to safeguard it until it's been perfectly polished by battle and is ripe for the taking. The tengu took it upon himself to train Yoshitsune as a warrior, and it is to his credit that Yoshitsune is as fearsome as he is today.
Hearing of his half-brother Yoritomo gave Yoshitsune a sense of belonging, and this prompted him to travel to meet his brother and offer his sword in the service of Yoritomo's goals, desperate for a place to belong. This soured when the brothers differed in their ideals for the future, and when Yoshitsune began attracting a sizable following Yoritomo chose to remove him from the picture in the name of solidarity. His betrayal and seeming-rejection of Yoshitsune has wounded him more than he would perhaps let on, and left this once adrift man unmoored again...with no purpose save that of seeing the person he so admired brought low.
Yoshitsune fights fiercely and recklessly, with no sense of self-preservation, feeling as if he is already little more than a dead man walking. His duty only to those who follow him now. He feels keenly responsible for the deaths of those who were killed for supporting him, and seeks to keep his lands of Hiraizumi safe from the further ravages of war.
He looks up to Kurama almost as a father figure, or an older brother at the least, readily reminiscing about times he would fall asleep in Kurama's wings - much to Kurama's gruff denials. Benkei is his right-hand man and most loyal follower, and they would both readily die for the other.
His route involves Yoshitsune coming to realize there are still things worth living for and that the past does not dictate our future.
Yoshitune's personality in a few words:
Taciturn
Melancholy
Fatalistic
Selfless
Insightful
Similar characters (note I do not say EXACT):
IkeVamp - Jean (the easiest, most 1:1 comparison probably)
SLBP - Hotaru (innocent but deadly, almost otherworldly power)
