Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out
My long-promised homage to @worryinglyinnocent‘s Playtime ‘verse, because she managed to write fifty installments without doing hippies, and I had to rectify that. Also my contribution to @rumbelleishope. Rated E.

The large cardboard box bearing items from the estate sale was like a time capsule from the late 1960s. Gold sorts through the items, fond memories of his early childhood stirred by such things as the beaded curtain and concert posters and the heavy stack of albums, their cardboard covers worn along the edges but still bright with the distinctive graphics of the era. The Who, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish, Iron Butterfly. Donovan, too, Glasgow-born like himself. He can hear them in his head, like a soundtrack to the Summer of Love, and he wonders if Belle will like any of them. He’s fairly certain that she’ll like the clothes, and holds up a loose, flowing smock with wide sleeves and delicate flowers embroidered around the neckline and hem. It’s a pretty thing, and he can easily see Belle wearing it, hopes that she’ll want to.
Methodically he sorts through the contents of the box, dividing everything into three piles. One to be priced and sold – the two posters were what had drawn him to bid on this lot in the first place, and he knows that he can sell them for a pretty penny – one of things he thinks Belle might be interested in, and one of a few items of clothing that he looks at doubtfully, unsure if he wants them to fit or not. But he thinks of Belle in the short dress, thinks of surprising her with a scenario they haven’t played out yet, knows he won’t regret any temporary feelings of silliness at wearing what are, after all, fairly normal clothes compared to some of the things he’s put on for her. Making up his mind, he goes into the shop’s small bathroom and locks the door.
Several minutes later he’s studying his reflection, and surprisingly not feeling too ridiculous. although he would die of embarrassment if anyone other than Belle were to see him wearing a suede leather vest adorned with long fringes. But the undyed linen shirt with the open neck and band collar is soft and comfortable, and if it’s a little too big, it’s not overly so, and he can roll up the sleeves. Same with the trousers, he’s sure that the flare-legged rust denim was originally meant to fit a bit more tightly than they do on his frame, but although he knows that Belle would no doubt appreciate that, he’s gotten used to more freedom of movement. With a belt and the cuffs turned up if he doesn’t want them to drag on the ground, the jeans fit well enough. The clothes remind him of his childhood, those years after he had been taken in by his aunts, where he had learned the feeling of security, and being wanted, and what it was like to be praised and encouraged instead of constantly belittled. Whether it’s the warm memories associated with the era, or simply the fact that he knows his ten year old self would have loved to have had a fringed leather vest, he’s satisfied with his image. Now all he has to do is suggest a scene. He thinks about it as he changes back into his suit and tucks the vintage garments into a bag. The shop is small, and would be easily decorated, but far too public for more than a quickie. The large Victorian house filled with fine antiques is not right at all. That leaves the cabin, he decides.
Saturday morning, he drops Belle off at the library and hands her a box tied with string that he’d stashed in the back seat of the Cadillac. “Don’t open it until lunchtime,” he says, knowing the pleasure of an anticipated surprise. “I won’t be in the shop today; I’ve got some other business to take care of.”
“All right; see you later.” Belle watches him drive off, mystified by the package in her hands. By the time lunchtime rolls around, she’s more than ready to tear off the box lid and find out what’s in it. A piece of paper sits on top of some tissue paper-covered contents, with the heading “Playtime?” She forces herself to read the rest before folding back the tissue paper and seeing what awaits her. “It’s 1968. Fibre artist and co-founder of Storybrooke’s new “Enchanted Forest” commune “Rumpelstiltskin” Gold has agreed to an interview with the hip young reporter from the local newspaper. Please confirm interview at 6 pm Saturday.” Intrigued, she folds back the tissue paper and nearly squeals with delight, instantly picking up the beaded, white leather headband that lays on top of the other items and tying it around her head. She gets out her compact mirror to admire how it looks for a moment before texting Rum back.
“Interview confirmed. Looking forward to it.”
He must have been waiting for her reply; his return message is swift. “Dove will have the car there for you at five; I’ll see you later.”
Dove arrives with the keys to the Cadillac before she closes the library at five, and as soon as she locks the front door, she retires to the restroom to change into her outfit. It’s a beautiful day, warm and sunny, and she drives out to the cabin as instructed, deciding what she’s going to say when she gets there. Parking, she starts to head for the door of the cabin when she hears music coming from around the side of it and alters her course. Gold is there, sitting on top of the picnic table, his spindle hanging down and twirling as he spins a smooth yarn from the basket of wool roving in the basket beside him. He is dressed – well, he is dressed to match her, obviously, and it suits him. It suits him incredibly well. He looks softer, younger, his dark hair set off by the off-white linen shirt, feathering out over the band collar, the open neckline displaying the line of this throat and a string of love beads, mostly black with a few white and sky blue ones mixed in at regular intervals. The rust-coloured denim of his jeans sits low on his hips and flares out below the knees and the fringed vest…she’d like to see him move with it on, see the fringes flare out. She kind of wants to borrow it herself, and thinks about what it would feel like to wear it with nothing on underneath. Preferably while she was riding him in bed, rocking back and forth, the open edges of the leather rubbing back and forth against her bare skin… She swallows hard, and pushes that image back to take out and play with again later. Gold looks both snuggly, and sexy, and she wants nothing more than to go over to him and slide her fingers into his hair to hold him still while she kisses him breathless, but she has a part to play first.
”Mr. Gold?” she asks, approaching. “I’m Belle French, with the Storybrooke Mirror. You agreed to an interview.” She holds out her hand and he lets go of the dangling yarn forming between his fingers to reach out and shake it.
“Call me Rum, please.” He goes back to smoothing the spinning fiber into a smooth, even yarn, and Belle can’t help but watch his hands.
“That’s a nickname, right?” She takes out a pen and notebook from her purse, ostensibly jotting it down. “For Rumpelstiltskin, because of the spinning.”
“It is. I quite like it.”
“How did you get into spinning?”
“My aunts taught me. We had a wee croft, a few sheep, chickens, that sort of thing. Turned out that I was quite good at it. I like the rhythm of it, and there’s a lot of satisfaction in taking a bit of dirty, rough wool and combing it clean and spinning it into a strong, even twist of yarn that can be made into things.”
“Do you use the yarn yourself? Make it into things?”
“Aye, we do a fair bit of that here, at the commune. Granny’s our champion knitter, ponchos and scarves and mittens, they always sell really well at the Miner’s Day Festival. And my son and his girlfriend like to make dreamcatchers with the wool; they’re another popular item. And of course we make things for ourselves as well.”
“So is that part of your goal here? To be as self-sufficient as possible?” Belle drops her bag on the grass and sits down beside it, cross-legged, resting her notebook on her thigh and glancing back up after scribbling a few things down in it. It’s a lazy sort of day, and for once she isn’t in a hurry to rush to the sex, instead interested in the unusually detailed background story he’s made up about himself, and hinted at in the letter he’d written. She wouldn’t mind being a journalist if she wasn’t a librarian, she thinks, and wonders if the Mirror might be interested in her starting a weekly column about books.
“Aye, I suppose. It’s cheaper to make your own bread than to buy it, for example, and better for you. You’ll have to talk to Anton, our crops expert, if you want to know more about that side of thing. He’ll talk your ear off about beans if you show even the slightest bit of interest.”
Belle grins, thinking of the gentle giant who ran the local health food store, and knowing it was actually true. “You mentioned your son; tell me about him.”
Gold smiles fondly. “He’s an artist. Does portraits when he can get a commission, freelance political cartoons, sign painting, anything really.”
Neal is indeed a good artist, she knows, even if he has chosen the steady paycheck that came with a job at the hardware store over any artistic dreams, preferring to keep it a hobby. “You sound very proud of him .”
“I am.”
“What about those other people you mentioned? His girlfriend, and Granny. Do they live here, too?”
“Aye, Emma and her parents are fairly new here. Her mother’s our respectable member of society – she’s a teacher at the school – and her father can do just about everything around here. Good with the animals, construction work, anything that needs doing. And I can’t even be jealous of him because he’s so nice, too.”
Belle laughs; it really is a good summation of David.
“And Granny, well, she’s been here since the beginning.”
Belle makes a note, and looks back up to watch the whirling spindle, his fingers never still as he forms the yarn between his fingers. “Tell me about the beginning. What made you decide to start a commune?”
“Well, we didn’t, not really, certainly not at first. When my son was young – “ he hesitates, and then continues. “His mother left us, and there I was, needing to go to work and having a wee boy to take care of at the same time. We didn’t have any family, or friends. But I knew the woman in the flat across from ours had taken in her granddaughter recently and was raising her on her own – there’d been some scandal with the mother, from what Milah had gathered. But the lass looked hearty enough, so I figured that the woman knew how to take care of a bairn and I was desperate. I went knocking on her door, thinking she might be willing to look after Neal for what little money I could offer her, since it would be in the convenience of her own home. And he was a sweet, well-behaved boy, no trouble at all.”
Belle looks up at him uncertainly, knowing that he was talking about his own real life here; at least as far as Neal’s mother leaving them went, and wonders about it. He normally never talks about that period of his life, maybe this was one way he could do so? She isn’t sure about the Granny part; they don’t seem to have that sort of relationship. She stops herself from asking if Granny had really watched Neal, though, not wanting to break character yet. Rum has gone through a lot of trouble putting together a backstory for this particular scenario, and she doesn’t want to break the mood. She realises that she knows even less about Granny’s past, or Ruby’s parents, and makes a note on her pad to ask later. She squints against the sun, positioned behind his head and outlining the locks of hair falling forward into his face, and tries to think what would be the next question that a journalist would ask.
“Were you working as a spinner then?”
“Lord, no, an accountant. It’s only been in the last few years that people have begun appreciating handcrafted items again, enough to pay a little more for them than mass-produced factory goods. It was when the last of my aunts died that I took it up again. They’d left me their cottage, and everything in it, including their wheels and a good stash of both raw wool and spun yarn. I would have moved back to Scotland and lived there, but Neal had his friends and his life here, and wanted to stay, so I sold the place and brought as many of their things home with us as possible, things that I remembered from my childhood, even though I had to place most of it in storage. But I made Neal a scarf for Christmas from the yarn, and his friend Emma then asked if I could make her a hat, and paid for it with her allowance money, and then Granny’s Ruby wanted one, and pretty soon the boutique in town contacted me about selling some of my stuff there. I took a leap of faith and quit my job, but if I was going to spend all day at home spinning and weaving, then I wasn’t going to do it in my tiny apartment. This cabin was for sale, needed a lot of fixing up, but Neal was old enough to help by then and enlisted a bunch of his friends from woodshop at school as well. We had it fixed up and livable in quite a short amount of time, and well, that was the start of things.”
Belle mentally sorts out the facts from fabrication. His aunts had been real, she knows, but the cabin has never been more than a weekend getaway place. She is saved having to think of another question by the music in the background coming to a stop and Gold putting aside his spindle and going over to the record player to flip over the disc. A new song begins playing, with what she thinks is a bass line, a deep, thumping riff that gets under her skin and makes her want to move. She stands up, leaving her notepad and pen lying on her bag in the grass, and goes to meet Gold. “I like this song,” she says, beginning to sway in place as he turns back around to face her.
“Do you?”
“Mm-hm.” She takes his hands, trying to get him to dance with her. “In-a-gadda-da-vida, honey, don’t you know that I love you,” she sings, and nearly laughs at the way his eyebrows go up in surprise, biting back the remark that Storybrooke does have an oldies radio station, and it’s kind of hard to forget a song that seems to go on forever. “In-a-gadda-da-vida, baby, don’t you know that I’ll always be true?” She lifts his arms up, spinning beneath him, and smiling; he helps twirl her, her lightweight skirt flaring out around her.
“Oh, won’t you come with me,” she sings, and her mind completely derails in a sexual direction. “Won’t you take my hand?” With a filthy smirk on her face she tugs at his hands, backing away, and he follows, entranced, helpless to do otherwise. “Oh, won’t you come with me and walk this land? Please, take my hand.” She stops as they reach the picnic table, putting her hands on his shoulders, swaying to the music, forcing him to move as well, his feet staying planted but hips and shoulders moving to the beat.
“That’s it,” she encourages, and he smiles, drawing her close with his hands on her hips, pulling her flush against his body. She loops her arms around his neck, playing with his hair, her gaze drawn to the open collar of his shirt. “You look good,” she says.
“Do I?’ He tilts his head, grazes his lips against hers.
“Mm-hm. You should wear light colours more often.” She dips her head, pressing a kiss against his collarbone, mouthing against the warm skin.
“Have we moved into the second portion of the programming?” he asks, amused, leaning in to run his tongue around her earlobe.
“New questions. Like, do you believe in free love?” She runs her hand up his back, feeling each bump in his spine through the soft shirt, and then back down again, slipping up underneath the sun-warmed fabric.
“Oh, most definitely,” he assures her, his breath ghosting over hers as the music throbs in the background, a primal beat that makes him want to move against her, inside her. He debates the practicalities of just lifting her up onto the top of the picnic table and taking her right there.
“And is there a reason for that picnic blanket that you spread out so thoughtfully in the shade of the tree over there?”
“There are twigs and bugs in the grass,” he says, and Belle snorts. “And I thought, if any visitors should wish to recline in comfort…”
“Well, then,” she says, and takes his hand, leading him behind her towards the blanket. She sinks down upon it and he sits down beside her, facing her, and she can’t think of anything else to say, because all she wants to do is touch him. She slides her hand beneath his hair at the nape of his neck and draws him closer and he tilts his head and then they’re kissing languorously, need slowly building between them. Belle slips her hands up under the hem of his shirt, then back out again, tugging at the hem. “Off,” she instructs.
Gold breaks away from the path he’d been nuzzling along her neck to grin at her. “Run out of questions, have you?”
“The only thing I want to know is what you’re going to look like spread out naked before me,” she says, her voice gone a bit husky.
Gold sheds his vest first and then reaches back and yanks his shirt off over his head, his eyes darkening. The light breeze rustling the leaves above them feels good on his heated skin as he shakes his hair out of his eyes, reaching out to splay his hands over Belle’s ribs before she can touch him herself, very much aware that she isn’t wearing a bra and grazing his thumbs over her nipples. Her breathing quickens and her head falls back as he rubs them, back and forth and back and forth, feeling them tighten and swell until she moans and reaches down to grab the hem of her own shirt. Gold obligingly drops his arms so that she can pull it off and cast it aside, the motion lifting her breasts and stretching out her taut belly. She kicks off her sandals and Gold takes the opportunity to remove his own low cut boots and socks, shifting more comfortably now onto his knees, and drawing Belle forward to straddle one of his thighs before kissing her again, more urgently than before.
Belle begins moving, riding his hard thigh, rubbing herself against him. His belt buckle digs into her stomach, and she reaches down, tugging it open and free impatiently, and then going for the snap and zipper of his jeans, wanting only warm skin against her, feeling Gold slide his hands up under her skirt, his palms smoothing along her legs. She slips her hand inside his jeans, palms his growing hardness, and Gold makes a desperate sort of noise, pressing up against her and then pulling back, scrambling to his feet to shove down his jeans and underwear together, while Belle makes quick work of removing the rest of her clothes and tossing them to the side, where she spots his discarded vest and, with a small smile, pulls it on over her bare chest. It feels as good as she had imagined, the suede soft but with just enough of a roughness to its texture to make her very aware of it as it shifts over her breasts, the edges grazing her nipples. Gazing up at Gold, she thinks it’s a good angle, his cock already half hard and lifting away from his body, and she thinks about rising back onto her knees and taking him into her mouth, but as she shifts onto her knees and curls a hand around his ankle, he braces his hands on her shoulders and lowers himself back down to the blanket, stretching out above her, one hand supporting her lower back, and she lets him ease her down, enjoying the weight of his hips pressing her down against the ground. They kiss, long and slow, and then he begins working his way down her body, touching and tasting, fingers and lips and tongue as her head falls back and her body arches into him.
She buries her fingers in his hair and gazes up into the branches of the tree as he suckles at her breasts. Something glints there, catches the sun and magnifies it. She closes her eyes briefly against it, becomes more aware of the pulse of the music in the background, the pulse of her blood in her veins. She opens her eyes again as his mouth leaves her and he moves further down, leaving her nipples wet and swollen and aching. She looks down at her body as she lifts her hands to cup her own breasts, to tug and pinch at the nipples and sees small rainbows dancing over her chest, her skin dappled in light and shade from the sun filtering through the leaves. She looks up in puzzlement, and then smiles in delight and reaches up as if she could reach the crystals she spots hanging from the branches of the tree, their prisms catching the light and breaking it up into the bands of colour that paint her skin and increase the dreamlike quality of the moment. She knows at once where they’re from, thinking of the box in the shop’s back room full of dismantled chandelier parts, but the knowledge doesn’t lessen their magic. She traces one along her skin, then takes one of the vest’s long fringes and shifts it back and forth over her nipple, sucking in a breath as it catches briefly before rolling over. Gold runs a hand along her thigh and she lets her legs fall apart and half closes her eyes as his fingers slip inside her, drawing out her moisture and using it to draw slow circles over her clit.
He watches her rolling the fringe back and forth over her nipple, the flesh visibly puckering around the hardening nub, and his own cock hardens in response. He longs to take her into his mouth, but cannot look away.
“You would fit right in at Woodstock,” he says huskily. “Imagine us there, listening to the music, and I’m standing right behind you, and we’re swaying to the music. You’re wearing nothing but your skirt and that vest, and it’s open, and I’m cupping your breasts in my hands, and playing with your nipples.“
Belle’s hips jerk, as the image goes straight to her core.
Gold dips his fingers into her again, and feels the effect his words are having on her. There’s plenty of slick now, for his thumb to glide easily over her flesh, that light, grazing touch that causes her clit to swell and harden in response. His voice drops in pitch, his Scottish accent strengthening without him being quite aware of it. “There’s people all around us, but it doesn't matter, no one does more than glance our way.” He searches his memory for images from the documentary of the famous concert. “It’d been pouring rain earlier, and your shirt had gone drenched and transparent in minutes. Other people were stripping off their wet things, and you’d boldly done the same; there’s no shame here, no constraints. Bodies are natural, they’re beautiful, there’s no need to hide them. There’s people with body paint, offering their services. Perhaps we’ll ask one to decorate your breasts; would you like that?”
Belle can’t keep from squirming, her eyes wide as they rake over his smooth, lightly tanned chest and lower, his cock blatantly erect for her.
“If we could paint you, too. What about you? Is your shirt off?”
“Oh aye, my chest is bare against your back, and my jeans are clinging to me like a second skin, and my cock is straining against the zipper; anyone who looks at me would know how much I want you. I want to take you away from the crowd and find a place to lay you out on the ground and rut into you like a wild beast, but I need you to come first, come on my hands, come for everyone to see – “ He slid his free hand up her chest, pushing the suede leather of the vest aside, completely baring her front, and cupped her breast in his warm hand, his hips shifting and pressing down against her pubis as he leans over her, thumb being replaced by middle finger, changing the angle, rubbing relentlessly. “Come on, sweetheart,” he urges, kneading her breast, his touch rougher here where she prefers lighter down below.
The music pulses in time with her blood and Gold’s hair falls forward to hang in his face. He blocks out the sun, he is haloed by it, sun and shade and the scent of grass and incense and she is here and she is there at the same time and his cock is heavy and stiff against her thigh and the hard knot of pleasure bursts within her and she comes with all her muscles clenching tight and her fingers digging into his skin where she’d reached for him. His finger stills against her, knowing not to move again until she relaxes, the tension sagging out of her body, and she feels good but it’s not enough, there’s an aching emptiness inside her that needs to be filled. She sits up abruptly, tumbling him onto his back, and straddles his hips, taking hold of his cock and stroking it firmly.
“We’ve gone away from the crowd now,” she tells him. “Found a place by the lake, behind some bushes. They offer us some privacy, but we can hear people nearby, going down to the lake, to bathe, to swim. Someone could easily come upon us, if they came in just the right direction.” She rubs her thumb over his slit, coaxing out a bead of moisture, and he lets out a nearly inaudible whine. “I don’t care, though. I want you, and I don’t want to wait. Are you willing to risk it? Willing to risk someone seeing me riding you into the ground?”
“Hell, yes.” He can’t wait, either. “Let them see. Let them see a beautiful woman like you wants someone like me.”
“You say “someone like me” as if I’m not dripping wet for you, as if I don’t want to have you buried inside me more than anything in the world,” she says, and rises up, positioning him at her entrance so he can feel the truth of her words. “You have to be quiet,” she warns, mischievously, and sinks down.
Gold swallows down the noise that wants to escape his throat as she engulfs him. “I don’t know if I can promise that.” He splays his hands out on her waist, just under the edge of the vest, his thumbs brushing the undersides of her breasts. Hanging open as it is, the vest only half covers them, baring a lovely wide strip of pale flesh right down the center of her body, adorned only by the love beads she still wore around her neck. As she shifts above him, the edges of the vest fall back, just revealing her nipples, and his cock throbs in response. He bucks up, everything feeling tight, and hot, and urgent. “That vest is a good look on you; we should keep it.”
Belle grins. “I’m glad you think so; I quite like it myself.” She leans forward over him, resting her weight on her hands, and begins to ride him, deliberately shifting continuously in a way that keeps the edges of the vest moving and rubbing against her breasts, her nipples staying hard and sensitive from the teasing friction. She undulates; rising and falling and pleasuring herself on his shaft, the long fringes falling forward as she lowers herself above his body.
Gold arches up as the leather fringes trail over his belly and swing forward to drag over his nipples, driving himself deeper inside her as he seeks more of the teasing sensation. He cups his hands over her breasts, rolling her nipples between forefinger and thumb, and Belle moans. He grins. “I thought we had to be quiet.”
"I never said I would be." She lifts herself up until just the head of his shaft remains within her, glancing down to see the hard column of his flesh joining their bodies. She tightens her muscles around him, squeezing as hard as she can.
Gold's whole body jerks as he cries out, his balls tightening and drawing up. He drags her back down upon him and rolls them over, pulling back out just enough to slam forward into her, rocking her backwards. He thrusts into her again, all control gone, feeling his climax rapidly approaching.
"That's it." Belle braces herself with drawn up knees and urges him on. "Come on, Rum, give it to me." He is all lean, wiry muscle, and dark hair falling forward and shielding his eyes from her view. She arches up into his next thrust, digging her fingers into his lean buttocks and feeling him long and thick and solid inside her. "That's it, so good, come on, come for me."
He snaps his hips forward, driving deep again and again until his body seizes with pleasure and he stills, braced on his forearms with his hips sealed against hers while the hot flood of his release spills inside her. After a few seconds his muscles unclench and he lowers himself to lay atop her, panting and letting his eyes fall shut as he savours the fading rush of ecstasy, his cock twitching a few times in aftershock as he softens inside her. He feels her fingers run through his hair and turns his face into her neck, breathing in the scent of her skin and the smell of crushed grass beneath the blanket, the air moving lightly over his sweaty back. A bird chatters above them, and he realises that the record had stopped playing at some point, unnoticed. He takes in a deep breath and rolls off to the side, blinking up at leaf-dappled sunlight and rainbows dancing in the air. He turns his head to the side and the corner of his mouth quirks up as Belle does the same and meets his eyes. She looks as debauched as he feels.
"So, Rumpelstiltskin," she says, reaching out to twine her fingers with his. She feels thoroughly well-used and it is about all she has the energy for at the moment. "Do you have any final words for the readers of our paper?"
Gold's smile widens into a grin. "Yeah. Turn on," He draws their joined hands to his lips and presses a kiss to her knuckles. "Tune in, and drop out." He lifts his free hand and flashes her a peace sign, feeling utterly sated and stupidly happy. He thinks of the box from the estate sale.
Best buy ever.

Two days before learning that she would lose her job, Lissa Gilliam spent hundreds of dollars online on baby products. A 37-year-old expectant mother, Ms. Gilliam had planned to ask local parents in Seattle for used strollers and secondhand onesies in a bid to reduce waste. But as the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the area, new items delivered in boxes seemed a safer bet. She figured she could afford the splurge, earning $50 an hour as a full-time contractor designing educational curriculums for a nonprofit. But then, on April 2, her employer slashed her hours and told her that her contract would end in early May — a few weeks before she is to give birth. Suddenly, like many others, Ms. Gilliam became hyperaware of her expenses. She and her husband, a high school physics teacher, now take a painful daily tally of their financial priorities: Is that $5 monthly web magazine subscription really necessary? How much does watering the garden cost? When will they need to tap their paltry savings? “We’re OK for now,” she said. “But the bottom may fall out from under us.” As millions of Americans lose jobs, take pay cuts, close businesses and absorb family members into their homes, they are being forced to rethink where their money goes. Even before the scramble for new jobs can begin, people are cajoling creditors, looking for gig work or simply cutting back to get through the first few disorienting weeks. “An economic shock like this could have a long-term impact on people who have traditionally felt like they were being cautious, that they weren’t profligate with their money, but didn’t have to worry about paying for rent or affording food,” said Stephanie Aaronson, the director of economic studies at the Brookings Institution. “They might have more debt, which will make it harder to spend in the future, or they might just feel less secure, which could boost savings and potentially dampen the recovery.” Ms. Gilliam and her husband are waiting for Washington State to make jobless benefits available to contractors through a federal assistance program, and hope to take advantage of a state program for maternity aid once their daughter is born. A $15,000 construction project planned for the rear of their house is on hold. They canceled their gym membership, their Hulu streaming service, multiple newspapers and even the Adobe Acrobat software that Ms. Gilliam uses for design work. On the whole, Ms. Aaronson said, household finances “were in relatively good condition as of six weeks ago — they were actually pretty healthy.” Now, she said, “a much broader swath of households are experiencing a complete loss of income compared to what we typically see in a recession.” Before the pandemic, Carol Cruz’s private health insurance plan cost her $840 a month — up from less than $500 four years ago. The bill ate up most of her $1,200 monthly paycheck, exceeding even the $600 monthly payment on the house she shares with her husband and their 17-year-old granddaughter in Tulare, Calif. On March 29, she was furloughed from her part-time job as a mental health therapist until at least the end of May. Other than the state unemployment benefits she hopes to receive soon, Ms. Cruz, 62, no longer has an income. So she got on the phone for at least three hours a day, asking for leniency from the health insurance provider, her mortgage lender and the credit union that holds the loan for her husband’s Chevrolet truck. All offered her more flexible terms, including 90-day grace periods and pay-what-you-can options. (Some creditors, she said, were less willing to negotiate.) The adjustments help keep the bills manageable, Ms. Cruz said. But her grocery costs have doubled, now that the price of eggs has soared and her granddaughter is no longer having free lunches at school. “I don’t know about my future,” Ms. Cruz said. “I’m not letting myself think about tomorrow, just about whether we have food today and money in the bank.” But some people, many of whom have never seriously budgeted, are now mapping out strict spending schedules for the next few months. After being furloughed in mid-March from her bartending and serving job at a Minneapolis concert hall, Krissy Calbert, 26, went from earning $300 in tips some nights to having no income as she waited for government aid. “It was two weeks of just panic — I was just going off the groceries I already had, trying to ration until money came in,” she said. “You get really creative. You eat little half meals, and you experiment with your seasonings and condiments to try to forget that you’re eating the same thing over and over.” Earlier this month, Ms. Calbert began receiving a weekly infusion of $1,100 from the state. She is now trying to reschedule when monthly bills are due so she can space out the payments: $600 for rent, $75 for her phone, up to $120 for utilities, $60 for streaming services, $200 for credit cards, plus other expenses. “I’m trying to get all of my credit card payments into the same week, so I can have a credit card week, a rent week, a phone week,” Ms. Calbert said. She has switched her grocery shopping from Target to Aldi, where, she said, she can afford to splurge on fresh produce and protein. Without health insurance, she is willing spend an extra $30 or $40 on fruits and vegetables in hopes of keeping her immune system strong, she said. “I can’t take the risk,” Ms. Calbert said. “A hospital bill right now would ruin me.” More than half of lower-income adults in the United States say they will struggle to pay bills this month, compared to a quarter of their middle-income counterparts and 11 percent of those in the upper-income tier, according to a survey of nearly 5,000 adults by Pew Research Center. Researchers defined a three-person household earning $37,500 to $112,600 annually as middle-income. Over all, more than half of those who expect a federal stimulus infusion will use most of the money to cover essential expenses, while one in five say they plan to save the funds. To create a financial buffer, many people are hunting for freelance or part-time work. Searches for work-from-home jobs rose 126 percent in March on FlexJobs, while traffic to the site has boomed 58 percent from a year ago. On Upwork, companies are looking for people to provide tech support for their homebound employees and to draft corporate messages about the coronavirus. Lonn Dugan, a digital marketing specialist in Sylvania, Ohio, has seen many clients scaling back their promotional efforts, such as one nonprofit that cut its budget by 90 percent after a major annual event was canceled. But another client, an agricultural supply company, commissioned a major website update, while a local mental health group wanted to ramp up its virtual support groups. The pressure on Mr. Dugan, 60, is intense. His workday is three hours longer than it used to be, between his existing clients and his attempts to drum up new business. He and his wife lost a third of their incomes; neither is eligible for government aid. “We’re completely overwhelmed by the shortfall. We can afford groceries and maybe the house and car payments, and that’s it,” he said. “But we’re not alone, and we’re focusing on acceptance as opposed to hand-wringing. We’re taking care of necessities, and that’s enough for right now.” Still, Mr. Dugan admits being stretched thin emotionally. He misses his wife, even though they are in the same house and she no longer needs to make a two-hour round-trip commute to her health care job. But the couple are so busy trying to stay afloat that they have stopped cooking fresh meals and turn instead to frozen dinners and fast food. “We just don’t have time,” he said. “We’re exhausted at the end of the day.” The post Finances – The New York Times appeared first on Sansaar Times.

Kentucky Is Hurting as Its Senators Restrict or Oppose Federal Help In Perry County, Ky., the native authorities is chopping again on rubbish pickup. Magoffin County is shedding public security staff. And in Floyd County, the place meals pantries are reporting that demand has tripled over the previous month, officers try to determine keep away from cuts to a program distributing meals to households. “Plenty of these youngsters, that is the one meal they get in a day,” mentioned Robert Williams, Floyd County’s judge-executive, the chief elected official. “I can’t ask a child to take a seat on a pc all day with nothing to eat.” In circumstances and deaths, Kentucky hasn’t been hit as laborious by the coronavirus as another states. Like a lot of the nation, it has skilled a surge this fall, however one much less extreme than in neighboring Tennessee. Kentucky’s financial system is reeling all the identical, notably in rural areas already struggling. “We have been in dire want of assist economically to begin with, earlier than Covid,” mentioned Matthew C. Wireman, the judge-executive of Magoffin County, an Appalachian county the place the unemployment fee was 16.7 % in October, one of many highest within the nation. The reduction bundle handed by Congress this month and signed by President Trump on Sunday ought to present assist. The $600 funds to people, criticized by the president and plenty of progressives as too small, would go a good distance the place the standard family earns lower than $40,000 a 12 months. So would the $300 weekly complement to unemployment advantages. And the invoice contains provisions meant to assist rural areas, together with subsidies for broadband infrastructure and assist for small farmers. However the assist would come over the objection of one in all Kentucky’s Republican senators, Rand Paul, who was one in all simply six to vote towards the bundle within the Senate, on the grounds that it amounted to handing out “free cash.” And it might be smaller and later than it would in any other case have been due to the work of the state’s different senator, Mitch McConnell, who as majority chief fought to restrict the bundle. Mr. McConnell particularly labored to exclude broad-based assist to state and native governments — assist that many native officers in his state say they desperately want. A spokesman for Mr. McConnell, nevertheless, mentioned the lawmaker had not been a hindrance and had helped lead the multitrillion-dollar federal response to the pandemic. “The compromise invoice is just not excellent, however it would do an infinite quantity of excellent for struggling Kentuckians and People throughout the nation who need assistance now,” Mr. McConnell mentioned in an announcement Sunday night. Mr. Paul’s workplace didn’t reply to requests for remark. Unemployment charges in some rural counties are within the double digits. Charges of starvation and poverty, excessive earlier than the disaster, have soared. Kentucky has misplaced greater than 20,000 state and native authorities jobs since February, and with budgets crippled by falling tax receipts, officers should select between elevating taxes and chopping providers. “It’s irritating that our personal senator gained’t help native governments,” Mr. Wireman, a Democrat, mentioned. “These are extraordinary occasions, and we have to be taking extraordinary measures on the nationwide stage from our federal authorities to assist of us out.” Like many rural areas throughout the nation, Magoffin County relies upon closely on the general public sector. State and native authorities jobs account for practically a 3rd of all employment within the county, versus an eighth of all jobs nationally. Elliott County, two counties to the north, is much more reliant: Almost two-thirds of all jobs are authorities jobs, together with greater than 200 at a state jail. “In lots of rural communities, state and native authorities is the foremost employer,” mentioned Janet Harrah, govt director of outreach at Northern Kentucky College’s enterprise faculty. State and native governments additionally supply “good jobs” — secure, comparatively properly paid, with advantages — the place the factories and coal mines that when served that function have usually shut down. Reducing extra jobs, Ms. Harrah mentioned, will sluggish the restoration. Up to date Dec. 28, 2020, 3:18 p.m. ET Kentucky’s financial system has pockets of energy. Statewide, the unemployment fee was 5.6 % in November, higher than the nationwide fee of 6.7 %. The state’s central location has helped it grow to be a logistics hub for UPS, DHL and Amazon, which have thrived in the course of the pandemic increase in on-line buying. Toyota and Ford have factories in Kentucky; they shut down early within the pandemic however have roared again to life to fulfill rising demand. As within the nation as an entire, nevertheless, the pandemic has additional widened divides between wealthy and poor areas. Louisville, the state’s largest metropolis and financial engine, has suffered from the lack of tourism and leisure, however industries much less affected by the pandemic, like well being care {and professional} providers, have helped maintain its financial system. That isn’t true in lots of rural areas, the place there could also be solely a handful of main employers. “In city areas, if folks begin to spend cash once more, the actual fact of the matter is there might be different corporations that can come up to take the place of those who have gone beneath,” Ms. Harrah mentioned. In rural areas, “as soon as these jobs are misplaced, will probably be very tough to exchange them.” Daryl Royse is attempting to carry on. He’s a co-owner of Heritage Kitchen, a comfort-food restaurant on Principal Avenue in Whitesburg, a small metropolis close to the Virginia border. Mr. Royse’s enterprise survived the primary wave of the pandemic with a mortgage from the federal Paycheck Safety Program and small grants from native teams. However that assist is gone, and the pandemic is hurting his enterprise once more. The Second Stimulus Solutions to Your Questions In regards to the Stimulus Invoice Up to date Dec 28, 2020 The financial reduction bundle, which President Trump signed on Sunday evening, will difficulty funds of $600 and distribute a federal unemployment advantage of $300 for at the very least 10 weeks. Discover extra in regards to the plan and what’s in it for you. For particulars on get help, take a look at our Hub for Assist. Will I obtain one other stimulus cost? Particular person adults with adjusted gross earnings on their 2019 tax returns of as much as $75,000 a 12 months would obtain a $600 cost, and heads of households making as much as $112,500 and a pair (or somebody whose partner died in 2020) incomes as much as $150,000 a 12 months would get twice that quantity. If they’ve dependent kids, they might additionally get $600 for every youngster. Folks with incomes simply above these ranges would obtain a partial cost that declines by $5 for each $100 in earnings. When may my cost arrive? Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin instructed CNBC that he anticipated the primary funds to exit earlier than the top of the 12 months. However will probably be some time earlier than all eligible folks obtain their cash. Does the settlement have an effect on unemployment insurance coverage? Lawmakers agreed to increase the period of time that folks can accumulate unemployment advantages and restart an additional federal profit that’s offered on high of the standard state profit. However as a substitute of $600 every week, it might be $300. That may final by March 14. I’m behind on my lease or anticipate to be quickly. Will I obtain any reduction? The settlement would supply $25 billion to be distributed by state and native governments to assist renters who’ve fallen behind. To obtain help, households must meet a number of situations: Family earnings (for 2020) can’t exceed greater than 80 % of the realm median earnings; at the very least one family member have to be vulnerable to homelessness or housing instability; and people should qualify for unemployment advantages or have skilled monetary hardship — instantly or not directly — due to the pandemic. The settlement mentioned help could be prioritized for households with decrease incomes and which have been unemployed for 3 months or extra. Final month, Gov. Andy Beshear shut down indoor eating within the state in response to the surge in virus circumstances. He lifted the order this month, however Mr. Royse’s enterprise hasn’t bounced again. He hasn’t had greater than three tables crammed without delay since reopening. With out federal assist, he mentioned, making it by the winter could also be a wrestle. “There’s form of a disconnect between those who go to Washington and the folks they symbolize in very small communities, particularly rural areas,” Mr. Royse mentioned. “We actually want the assistance.” Communities like Whitesburg have been struggling lengthy earlier than the pandemic. The coal mines that powered jap Kentucky’s financial system have been in decline for many years, and regardless of federal and regional revitalization efforts, the realm suffers from excessive charges of power well being situations, low schooling ranges and widespread poverty. The financial enlargement that adopted the Nice Recession didn’t raise many poor rural communities, and the pandemic has undone a lot of the progress that was made. “What Covid did was it pushed them additional behind,” mentioned Olugbenga Ajilore, an economist for the Middle for American Progress who has studied the pandemic’s impression on rural America. Many components that contributed to the area’s pre-pandemic struggles — insufficient digital infrastructure, a scarcity of well being care entry — made the realm notably susceptible, he mentioned. Furthermore, excessive charges of poverty imply that many households went into the pandemic with few sources to climate the storm. And lots of of them have already suffered lasting monetary injury in the course of the monthslong delay for assist, mentioned Jason Bailey, govt director of the Kentucky Middle for Financial Coverage, a liberal group. “It’s not totally different from elsewhere, besides that we have been simply going into this with so many individuals who have been on the sting anyway, with no financial savings, no buffer,” he mentioned. The pandemic has minimize in half the earnings of Alicia Hardwick, a hair stylist close to Pikeville, an hour north of Whitesburg. She certified for partial unemployment advantages, about $90 each two weeks, however the funds stopped in early October, and he or she hasn’t been capable of contact anybody from the state’s unemployment workplace to resolve the difficulty. Ms. Hardwick tried to make masks to earn cash on the facet, nevertheless it by no means amounted to a lot. Her husband has, with extra success, made some advertising movies on a contract foundation for slightly further money. However it hasn’t been sufficient — simply because the couple really feel they’re getting caught up, one other invoice comes due, and the cycle continues. “Then we’re flat broke once more, and obtained to go to work and make more cash to offer it away,” Ms. Hardwick mentioned. “It’s the little folks which are struggling proper now, and the wealthy are getting richer.” She mentioned she had been skeptical of the federal authorities even earlier than the pandemic. This 12 months’s occasions have solidified that sentiment, she mentioned, proving to her that folks in Washington are incapable or unwilling to assist these they symbolize. “I didn’t belief the federal government that a lot earlier than as a result of we all know they preserve issues from us, however now it’s nearly like the federal government is evil,” Ms. Hardwick mentioned. “It’s actually pushed it dwelling that I used to be proper to not totally belief them — by no means, by no means, by no means.” Patricia Cohen contributed reporting. Productive Things To Do If You’ve Been Furloughed With Back Pay
One of the greatest benefits of full-time work is getting paid whether you work or not. I miss that.
How awesome is it to paid when there is a snow day? How good does it feel when you’re out sick for a week and the paycheck continues to roll in? When you’re sipping Mai Tais on the beach thanks to your four weeks of paid time off plus national holidays, life is pretty good!
Now imagine if you got furloughed for a month or more during the holiday season. What a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the people that matter the most to you.
Although you miss the bi-weekly paychecks, you’ll eventually get paid once the government reopens for business. Almost all government workers got paid during the previous government shutdown. Expect the situation to be no different during the 2019 shutdown.
Now compare thiswork and pay situation with that of an entrepreneur or freelancer. If the entrepreneur doesn’t work, and if his or her employees don’t work, the entrepreneur does not get paid. Entrepreneurs don’t have a safety net as their full-time colleagues do. And therefore entrepreneurs must always have contingency plans.
In 2018, I got something worse than a furlough. I freelanced the entire month of October but didn’t get paid because the company I partnered with decided not to pay their contractors. But not to worry, the company paid all its employees for the work they did in October and provided 1-2 weeks of severance pay.
Freelancers like myself, however, got screwed.
So you see, if you are furloughed with back pay without having to work, life could always be worse. Therefore, it’s always good to focus on the positives and take every opportunity to do good.
In my case, I took my October robbery and decided to aggressively diversify my clientele. Further, I now insist on more upfront payment just in case. And don’t worry about me. I have plans to make them pay me what they owe. Nobody ever welches on a Financial Samurai and gets away with it.
Productive Things To Do If You’ve Been Furloughed
1) Spend time with your family. The #1 complaint working people have is their inability to find work-life balance. It’s usually the case where the complainer is working too much and feels guilty about not seeing enough of his or her family.
Well now is the time to spend quality time with your family even if it’s for no other reason than you have nothing else better to do. When your kids flee the nest or your parents pass away, you will regret having not spent more time with them.
2) Do a deep dive into your finances. Most people set it and forget it when it comes to their finances. Use this time to discuss your budget, your expenses, your savings rate, and your financial goals with your partner or family members. Make adjustments as you see fit. Managing your wealth should become routine, like brushing your teeth.
After a tremendous recovery since 2009, you may want to spend more time protecting your capital. What a shame it would be to make so much money only to lose it all.
3) Start the side hustle you’ve been putting off forever. A furlough is a good reminder of how dangerous it is to depend on only one source of income. The key to financial security is to generate as many income streams as possible so that if one goes down, your team of other income sources can keep you afloat.
The average financially independent person has at least five different sources of income. Meanwhile, no one income source accounts for more than 40% of their entire income. It’s important to build new sources of active and passive income to truly be free.
4) Brand yourself online with a website. During times of uncertainty, you want to plant your own flag on the internet. The law of attraction dictates that if you put yourself out there, other people with similar interests will come.
Don’t let the big social media sites own your brand. They’ve already gotten filthy rich off you in the process. Build your own internet brand and get rich off yourself.
5) Take an affordable local vacation. Given you don’t know exactly when the furlough or financial troubles will end, you probably don’t want to take an international vacation or a vacation that is hard to get to. Instead, consider vacations within a five-hour drive so that you can return to work more easily.
6) Follow up with neglected friends and family. There is undoubtedly a long lost friend you haven’t contacted for at least a year because life gets in the way. Make a list of three people whom you used to have great relationships with and reach out. Use this time to meet up and get reacquainted.
Happiness is all about having a good network of people you enjoy and trust. If you want to increase your happiness, work on building your relationships.
7) Look for a new job. If you’re furloughed or your company is going through financial difficulties, you should probably aggressively start looking for new work opportunities before things get worse. A furlough of any kind means there is serious dysfunction.
Getting ahead of the curve will likely increase your chances of finding new work. Just like negotiating a severance before mass layoffs will likely not only garner you a bigger severance and more job choices.
8) Build a larger emergency fund. Most people shouldn’t feel too much anxiety during a furlough because most last no more than one or two months. Further, if you’re going to get your pay eventually, covering a couple months worth of expenses shouldn’t be that excruciating.
However, if you are feeling anxious, then it’s important to not only build new income streams, but also ratchet up your savings so you won’t feel the same level of anxiety during the next emergency. Bad things happen all the time, so it’s wise to have at least six months of liquid living expenses liquid at any given moment.
9) Work on neglected house projects. Houses, cars, and machines tend to get neglected over time because we’re too busy doing other things. Use the furlough to fix broken items around the house, clean up the yard, change your house filters, clean the gutters, tune up the car, and grease those old tools. You’ll feel great catching up with all the deferred maintenance. You’ll likely save money in the long run as well.
10) Pretend you’ve retired early. If you’ve ever wanted to test drive early retirement life, now is the time to pretend you are retired. See how life is like without a steady paycheck. Record your feelings, good and bad.
If you’re feeling great during the furlough, then you just might be closer to retirement than you realize. If you feel incredibly anxious because of financial worry and you also don’t know what to do with your free time, you should probably keep on working.
Make The Best Of Difficult Situations
When we were growing up, we’d get three months of summer vacation and at least two weeks off for winter vacation to unwind. Once we started work, long vacations became a thing of the past.
Over time, we lose our physical and mental health. Stress starts building up inside our increasingly overweight bodies. Our minds start to deteriorate as we don’t give our minds enough time to reset through meditation and creative work.
Take advantage of a furlough. Use this time off to unwind.
Life is never going to go exactly the way we planned. But we can always take some action to improve our chances for a better life.
If I ever get the opportunity to be furloughed from a job with back pay, I’d use part of the time off to catch up with my family. Then I’d use the rest of the time off to aggressively look for more meaningful work with more stability.
I won’t be beholden to the government or to a single company for money. It’s just too risky not to diversify my income streams.

What are some things you’d do if you got furloughed? Would you be OK to miss a couple paychecks so long as you eventually got paid? Will a furlough help motivate hundreds of thousands, or even millions of people to bolster their finances so that they can better withstand another financial delay the next time around? What do you think it will take for people to save more and diversify their income streams?

Best health Trump, Congress square off over virus aid as crisis worsens
Best health
WASHINGTON — The designate for the next COVID-19 support equipment also can rapidly swell above $1 trillion as White House officials negotiate with Congress over cash to reopen colleges, prop up limited corporations, enhance virus attempting out and preserve cash flowing to American citizens while the virus crisis deepens within the U.S.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday promised a weird spherical of recount funds to earners below a particular earnings level, a lot just like the $1,200 checks despatched within the spring. President Donald Trump insists on a payroll tax vacation for workers. And Democrats favor billions to outfit colleges and shore up native governments.
“Regretfully, right here is no longer over,” McConnell acknowledged after a raucous private GOP lunch, urging American citizens to be taught to live with the unusual virus by carrying masks and practicing social distancing till a vaccine will be found.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and acting chief of staff Notice Meadows spent the day on Capitol Hill, assembly individually with McConnell, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and others attempting to broker a compromise between the GOP’s emerging $1 trillion proposal with the House’s more sweeping $3 trillion invoice.
The lunch session grew heated as key Republican senators complained about gigantic spending, vowing to stall the reduction invoice’s passage.
Supporters of the equipment “also can nonetheless be ashamed of themselves,” Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky acknowledged as he emerged.
Paul when compared GOP backers of the spending to “Bernie bros” — relating to the younger supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. “Here is insane. … There’s no incompatibility now between the two events.”
As a protracted line of senators rose to focus on aspects of the invoice, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz requested his colleagues, “What within the hell are we doing?”
Cruz warned if the economy is nonetheless shut down come November, Joe Biden will resolve the White House, Democrats will adjust the Senate and “we’ll be assembly in a chief smaller lunch room,” according to a particular person granted anonymity to talk in regards to the closed-door session.
Sen. Rick Scott of Florida left announcing it’s immoral to “bail out” cash-strapped states. “Florida taxpayers are no longer going to pay for New York’s costs,” he acknowledged.
With the pandemic exhibiting no signs of easing, officials acknowledge the daunting philosophize of attempting to salvage the coronavirus and prevent additional financial wound. The U.S. has rising infections and a demise toll nearing 142,000, better than anywhere else on this planet. The health crisis is worsening precise as emergency support is set to speed out.
Meadows told newshounds the president wants to guarantee the funding equipment “meets the reliable needs that are earlier than the American folks.”
Democratic leaders acknowledged the Republicans are in disarray, and Pelosi later blamed the pandemic’s mounting toll on the president’s philosophize of being inactive.
“It is the Trump virus,” she acknowledged on CNN.
The Republicans are poised to roll out a $1 trillion equipment, what McConnell known as a “starting up level” in talks. It is a counter-offer to Pelosi’s $3 trillion House-passed idea as they speed to strike a deal by the end of the month. That is when a $600 weekly unemployment advantages enhance and other support, including a federal condo moratorium on hundreds and hundreds of apartment items, expires.
McConnell’s equipment would send a new spherical of recount cash funds to American citizens below a particular earnings level, most likely $75,000 for singles, lengthen limited industrial loans below the Paycheck Safety Program and assemble a 5-year liability defend in opposition to what he warns is a doable “epidemic” of coronavirus complaints.
It is moreover expected to incorporate at the least $105 billion for education, with $70 billion to support Ok-12 colleges reopen, $30 billion for colleges and $5 billion for governors to allocate. The Trump administration wanted college cash linked to reopenings, but in McConnell’s equipment the cash for Ok-12 could be damage up 50-50 between folks that delight in in-particular person studying and folks that assemble no longer.
Republicans must change the $600 weekly federal jobless earnings with a lower amount, to prevent the unemployed from receiving more support than they’d thru a customary paycheck, Republicans acknowledged.
Over lunch, Mnuchin defined the unemployment enhance also can presumably be phased all the design in which down to a percentage of a employee’s old earnings, according to a Republican granted anonymity to talk in regards to the private assembly. Some Republicans take merely removing the $600 earnings.
Nonetheless the president’s priorities are splitting his GOP allies and giving momentum to Democrats.
Trump wants a corpulent repeal of the 15.3% payroll tax, which is shared amongst employers and staff, and funds Social Security and Medicare. Specialists bellow that on my own would cost $600 billion. At a White House assembly on Monday, GOP leaders told Trump they most smartly-favored to incorporate most productive a partial payroll tax slice lend a hand.
Easing the payroll tax is dividing Trump’s occasion on account of it does limited to support out-of-work American citizens and adds to the debt load. The tax is already being deferred for employers below the old virus reduction equipment. Supporters bellow cutting back it now for workers would attach cash in folks’s pockets and stimulate the economy.
The administration moreover panned McConnell’s proposed $25 billion for more virus attempting out, announcing earlier allotments live unspent.
White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany acknowledged Tuesday the administration wants “focused” funds for the next spherical of support, in preference to adding more to the present pot. She acknowledged no one is keeping it up.
Senate Democrats started investigating why the Trump administration has left nearly half the attempting out cash unspent.
After assembly with Mnuchin, Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer acknowledged Republicans must stop stalling. They broadly dismissed the emerging GOP effort as insufficient.
The political stakes are high for both events earlier than the November election, and heaps more so for the nation, as amid the virus crisis and financial fallout.
Biden, the Democrats’ presumed presidential nominee, acknowledged his have priorities, urging “a lifeline to folks who need it most: working households and limited corporations.”
Trump’s renewed level of curiosity on therapeutics and a vaccine is falling flat amongst lawmakers who perceive that any COVID-19 treatments live months, if no longer a year, from standard distribution within the U.S. The federal authorities is nonetheless struggling to present standard scientific offers and non-public protective equipment to health care providers.
Mnuchin vowed to survive Capitol Hill for the next two weeks, certain to save a deal by month’s end.
The proposed virus support equipment regularly is the fifth, following the $2.2 trillion invoice passed in March, the largest U.S. intervention of its kind. The jobless price has remained in double digits, higher than within the closing decade’s Enormous Recession, and a federal eviction moratorium on hundreds and hundreds of condo items permitted within the closing invoice is set to speed out.

Post-crisis recovery for movers – how to approach it?
Coming back after the crisis caused by the global COVD-19 pandemic is among the primary concerns of businesses now. Different industries were affected in different ways, and some had more difficulties than others. Nevertheless, every business suffered to a degree, the moving industry included. Borders were closed, and with social distancing introduced to our everyday lives, no one wanted to leave the safety of their home. Even though things have calmed a bit, we can expect a second wave to hit us any time now. With that in mind, let’s talk about post-crisis recovery for movers, and how to approach it and prepare for the possible second crisis.
Let everyone know you are back in business, stronger than ever!
Before anything else, you must communicate with your customers. Once people understand that moving companies still operate normally, they will start planning relocations again. However, it is also crucial to let them know you are following all the required health procedures:
wearing masks and gloves when handling customer’s belongings
taking care of personal hygiene of your employees
keeping social distance
testing employees for Coronavirus on a regular basis
All of these things are important if you wish to create a safe and secure environment for future customers.
Allow your users to schedule relocations online
With social distancing in place, even though a lot of companies started working again, people still don’t want to be close to other people. For that reason, allow your users to schedule relocations online.
If you allow your users to schedule an online relocation, you are helping them stay safe.
This step keeps your customers safe and saves time for them. They don’t have to waste time going out. Furthermore, there are many moving companies that have instant moving quote calculators customers can use to get a precise estimate for their upcoming move.
Assess the loses of your company
Before the post-crisis recovery process for movers can be started, it is imperative to assess business losses over the past few months. All moving companies lost money on canceled deals, and you must calculate how much money was lost.
This is imperative if you wish to build a business model for months to come. Financial damage has many layers, from hard profit loss numbers to cash flow issues. A good idea is to compare your financial status with the one from the last year, so you can figure out the difference and estimate the amount of work you will need to recover.
Re-structure your business plan
No matter how well your business operated in the pre-COVID-19 world, now it will have to change. When I talk about re-structuring your business plan, this does not have to include large changed for all. Some businesses can fine-tune their strategies to include post-COVID-19 safety requirements. The needs and the demands of your clients change, you have to meet their expectations all over again.
Have a discussion about the best ways to drive your business forward. Furthermore, talk about advertising and marketing.
Do you need financial aid?
This is a crucial question to answer. After assessing the losses of your company, and discussing how to re-structure your business plan, it is important to talk about the necessity for financial aid.
Many companies are looking for loans to jumpstart their business. Another very useful strategy is to turn towards the Paycheck Protection Program. The U.S. Small Business Association offers aid to small businesses in the form of SBA loans.
Evaluate your financial situation and ask for financial aid if needed.
If, however, you discover that a loan is not necessary at the moment, try to run your business without it.
Look into new markets
Sadly, not all moving companies will be back on their feet. Some suffered major losses and were forced to close their doors. However, that opens a whole new market for you. Someone will have to fill in the gap they left in the business. Recognizing and seizing new opportunities is imperative for your survival.
Focus on specialized moving services
After this whole pandemic, the demand for specialized services rises. It is clearly visible how well pharmacies and grocery stores worked during the lockdown. When it comes to relocation, there is also a need for specialized moving services.
For example, in my area, they emptied a hospital and moved all the patients to a different location, so the current hospital can take Coronavirus patients. Even though hospitals will not ask for moving services when relocating patients, they might need help with moving equipment if necessary.
This is just an example, but you see what I have in mind. Research what type of services may have a rise in popularity, and focus all of your strengths and resources towards that goal.
Think of innovative ways to re-shape the moving industry
One of the best practices you can include in your weekly meetings is to talk about innovative ways to provide better service. Virtual moving estimates have already changed the moving industry, but that does not mean there is no place for new ideas. As mentioned before, shift your focus towards keeping your clients safe.
Create a contingency plan for a new crisis
It is safe to say that a new crisis will happen very soon. Coronavirus is still among us, and it is probably here to stay for a longer period of time. However, there is one major benefit you did not have before. Now, you know what to expect. Create a contingency plan that will allow your business to keep running even when the second wave of COVID-19 happens.
Sit down with your people and create a contingency plan for the future.
Keep your chin up and stay strong!
There is nothing else to say but to stay strong and endure. The post-crisis recovery for movers is possible if you approach it in the right way. The virus is here, but it can be beaten if we think smart and do everything we can to protect ourselves. And, by protecting yourself, you also protect your business. Think smart and stay healthy!

Minnesota’s ‘Hybrid Court’ Offers Addicts an Alternative to Jail
Jason Drift’s drug use seemed to increase every time he suffered a death in the family.
A 44-year-old environmental services worker on the Bois Forte Indian Reservation in northern Minnesota, he had begun taking prescription pain pills for knee problems in the early 2000s.
Hydrocodone, Oxycotins and Percocets eased his physical pain.
But then his sister died and he found himself snorting 20-plus of them per day. Pills became hard to come by when users got flagged at pharmacies. So he started spending half his paychecks buying them from low-level dealers in the area.
A blurry two years later, he had turned to snorting meth. In the fall of 2017, after a police officer found marijuana and a gram of meth in his car, he found himself facing imprisonment if convicted of a felony crime of fifth-degree possession of methamphetamine.
But there was an alternative.
He could avoid prison if he were accepted into the 13-month Range Hybrid court program, operated by the Sixth Judicial district in northern Minnesota. The program is designed to provide people accused or convicted of non-violent, felony drug and alcohol related crimes an alternative to traditional probation supervision.
Participants who complete the program successfully can have their charges dropped from the record.
Drift, an enrolled member of the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa in northeastern Minnesota, was accepted as a candidate.
But over a year ago, when he first found himself face to face with Judge Michelle Anderson, who presides over the court in the St. Louis County Courthouse in Virginia, Mn.,—and the team of assistant attorneys, public defenders, probation officers and chemical dependency and mental health experts who told him they were there to help him—he was wary.
“It sounded sketchy,” he remembered. “I didn’t want to be there.”
The Choice: Incarceration or Treatment Court
Judge Anderson has garnered praise from prosecutors and defense attorneys who say it is a proven system that gets adults charged with drug possession and driving under the influence of alcohol out of jails and prisons and into rehabilitation.
The state court administrator for Minnesota Treatment Courts reported last year that 54 percent of statewide participants graduate, while 94 percent receive treatment and 80 percent complete at least one phase of the five-phased program.
New charges and convictions are lower for participants who spend half as much time in prison and two-thirds as much time in jail compared to non-participants.
Since its creation in 2006, the Range Hybrid court served 292 people, of which 67 percent graduated from the program, according to the area court’s recent studies. Eighty-three percent entered the program with a drug felony and 17 percent for a DUI. Fifty-five percent of them were men and 45 percent women. Ages ranged from 19 to 54.
Between 2017 and 2018, the court estimated that 45 percent of the participants were white, 26.21 percent Native American or Alaskan Native; 6.80 percent Latino; 4.85 percent black and 16.5 percent other.
About 91 percent had co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders, 70 percent experienced trauma or violence and 65 percent did not have money to meet basic needs.
The program handles a maximum of 50 pre-and post-adjudication cases at a time from Minnesota’s “Iron Range” region, and uses therapeutic principles of addiction programs that have become popular in similar courts across the state of Minnesota and the U.S.
Participants like Drift must agree to weekly treatments with the team.
When asked later about the court proceedings, Drift recalled feeling “a little bit leery” when standing before the judge and hearing her ask him, “How are you today?”
But his feelings have since changed after nearly one year of meeting with her as well as members of the Treatment Court Team, some of whom are open to participants and the HDT about their own experiences in recovery programs.
“When I entered the program, I was still feeling fidgety with meth in my system and the judge could see me because I couldn’t wear my glasses. My pupils looked like two piss holes in snow banks,” Drift said.
“I’d seen a lot of people fail their UAs or have to go to treatment again, but she gives them chances. I think she’s a good judge for the program. She’s fair. She’s honest. She gives you a chance to turn your life around.”
Keep Your Guard Up
Anderson depends upon her legal experience and the Treatment Court Team to uphold the rules of the program and help navigate somewhat contentious issues, such as monitoring the use of medication-assisted treatment, including Suboxone, the most common form of buprenorphine.
Three months ago, the Minnesota Department of Corrections approved a new policy to allow people on parole or supervised release to use medical marijuana. The move has been a hot topic for the judge and her team.
Anderson also depends largely on the court’s two probation officers — Gary Flannigan and Jeff Oja— who increased their typical caseloads to include up to 50 more cases from the treatment court program.
Reflecting on the services, David Holmbeck, a supervisor of Arrowhead Regional Corrections said that the St. Louis County territory covered by his officers, at 6,860 square miles, represents one of the largest counties in the nation.
Because of its vastness, the county is the only one in the state that has chambered judges working in separate courthouses in three cities: Duluth, Hibbing and Virginia.
“Staffing alone is also an issue,” Holmbeck said. “And the caseload numbers are relatively the same, but the involvement with clients has dramatically increased. The level of needs for our clients has increased because of the increase in opioid addiction, meth and mental illness.
“About 25 years ago, it was a DUI offender. Now, we’re running into more people with psychological distress.”
But officers have improved to meet demands.
“We’re better at what we do because we’re incorporating more cognitive-based programming to help reduce recidivism and changing criminal thinking and behaviors,” Holmback explained.
Fifteen years with Arrowhead Regional Corrections has shaped Flannigan into a seasoned officer with enough experience to believe that the “difference between parolees from prison and clients on probation is that instead of being hardened, a lot of the treatment courts participants are desiring to change in life.
“Really it’s an addiction that’s bringing them into the criminal justice system.”
He maintains his outlook despite the Range Hybrid court evolving from taking on low-risk offender to high-risk, high need individuals that might carry longer criminal histories.
“We want people who have serious chemical dependency addictions and are struggling with the disease,” he said. “Some people might opt out and choose jail, but that’s very rare. People are talkers until they’re sitting in jail. In the beginning, a lot of people fight the system. But most of them are thankful down the road.”
During their scheduled and random visits, Flannigan and Oja are seldom paired up together.
Neither of them are permitted to carry firearms. Instead, they arm themselves with bullet-proof vests, pepper spray, radios and handcuffs. Most importantly, they are trained in de-escalation tactics and use of force; yet they are comforted knowing that law enforcement can be called upon when needed.
“We’re mindful and we know we’re not a force like law enforcement is when they kick in doors and make extractions,” Flannigan said. “If we find violations, we make arrests. If someone is extremely violent or belligerent, we are trained to get out of the situation. Our safety is paramount.”
He added: “Do bad things happen? Yes. We’ve had close calls and scary situations. But it’s amazing how rare we run into violent situations.”
Flannigan’s focus in the beginning stages of the program is to establish a rapport with his clients. But trust is difficult when it comes to people often suffering from co-occurring chemical dependency and mental health issues.
“Addicts are some of the most manipulative, tricky, savvy people that I work with,” he said.
“They’re addicted to very powerful drugs and you don’t expect complete 100 percent sobriety. We take a therapeutic approach to relapses and then sanction them if they’re lying or we might put them in jail for a weekend.
“Absconding is common. And when we’ve exhausted every avenue, then they are labeled ‘Not Amenable to Probation’ and are kicked out of the program.”
Why does Flannigan work a job where he always has his guard up?
“People change. We see the transformation in front of our eyes.”
Fatherhood Revisited
During the second phase of the Range Hybrid court program, Drift began Moral Reconation Therapy in addition to attending weekly recovery meetings, bi-weekly court hearings and complying with treatment and supervision.
“I realized then that it’s for the best that I turn my life around and get my kids back in my life,” he said.
After his decision, he was able to secure another job from a supportive group at Fortune Bay Resort and Casino, and worked with a county social worker who helped him figure out the maze of paperwork needed to retain his driver’s license and pay child support again.
She also helped him move out of his brother’s house and into a 12-step house and then into his co-worker’s sober house in Virginia, which is half a block from the courthouse.
“Alex pointed me in the right direction,” he said. “This program is making me more responsible.”
For Drift, the month of July marks nearly one year clean and sober. He owes the court $100 to move into the final phase of the program and sometimes struggles to afford the $1,200 program cost, child support, rent and other bills. But he counts himself lucky to have dodged transportation troubles.
Plus, it beats doing time. If all goes well, he expects to graduate in September.
It was about one year ago when Drift first saw his two youngest daughters again. It had been several years.
“They didn’t barely know me,” he said. “The older one called me Dad. But the younger one didn’t know me well. Now they will call me up to chat with me.”
Drift is now gearing up to celebrate his birthday later this month.
“I reserved a pontoon boat for my two girls on Lake Vermilion so we can have some fun.”
Looking forward, he prays that he can reconnect with his oldest daughter.

Now compare this work and pay situation with that of an entrepreneur or freelancer.

Finances – The New York Times
“But the bottom may fall out from under us.”
As millions of Americans lose jobs, take pay cuts, close businesses and absorb family members into their homes, they are being forced to rethink where their money goes.
“They might have more debt, which will make it harder to spend in the future, or they might just feel less secure, which could boost savings and potentially dampen the recovery.”
Ms.
Aaronson said, household finances “were in relatively good condition as of six weeks ago — they were actually pretty healthy.” Now, she said, “a much broader swath of households are experiencing a complete loss of income compared to what we typically see in a recession.”
Before the pandemic, Carol Cruz’s private health insurance plan cost her $840 a month — up from less than $500 four years ago.
(Some creditors, she said, were less willing to negotiate.)
The adjustments help keep the bills manageable, Ms. Cruz said. But her grocery costs have doubled, now that the price of eggs has soared and her granddaughter is no longer having free lunches at school.
“I don’t know about my future,” Ms. Cruz said. “I’m not letting myself think about tomorrow, just about whether we have food today and money in the bank.”
But some people, many of whom have never seriously budgeted, are now mapping out strict spending schedules for the next few months.
You eat little half meals, and you experiment with your seasonings and condiments to try to forget that you’re eating the same thing over and over.”
Earlier this month, Ms.
“A hospital bill right now would ruin me.”
More than half of lower-income adults in the United States say they will struggle to pay bills this month, compared to a quarter of their middle-income counterparts and 11 percent of those in the upper-income tier, according to a survey of nearly 5,000 adults by Pew Research Center.
We’re taking care of necessities, and that’s enough for right now.”
Still, Mr.
“We’re exhausted at the end of the day.”

Now compare this work and pay situation with that of an entrepreneur or freelancer.

Market America: Racketeer or Real Business? [Review]
Racketeering charges are nothing new among MLMs. But we’re decades away from the years when Amway and other big-name MLMs were convincing the world that multi-level marketing isn’t a scam.
So why is Market America facing these charges today? You gotta wonder.
Market America is a network marketing company founded in 1992 by a couple of former Amway distributors.
The company ran into problems early on so it took a while for them to catch some momentum. Now, with another major lawsuit on their hands, we’ll see if they can keep the momentum going.
FAQ
1. What does Market America sell? Market America sells just about every type of product you could want or need: appliances, clothing and accessories, food and beverages, home care, leisure and educational, personal care, wellness products, internet services, financial services, and entertainment. They call themselves a product brokerage company, and their goal is to give consumers a better way to shop for everyday products, converting existing everyday spending into earnings.
2. What are Market America’s most popular products? As a product brokerage, Market America can offer products and services from well-known stores like Target, Nike, Apple, and more. The cost is about the same as it would be shopping on the store’s site, but through Market America, you get Cashback on more than 40 million products and services you already know. These may be their top products, simply because the brands are so well known. But some of Market America’s exclusive brands—such as Motives, their award-winning cosmetics line, and TLS, their low-glycemic weight management system—are also popular.
3. How much does it cost to join Market America? To join Market America, you’ll register your business with one of four Fast Start kits costing $399. This includes the annual subscription and lets you start your business with your commission banks already open. If you can’t afford to register your business, you can get a Starter Kit for $149.95. With this option, you can earn retail profit, but your commission banks won’t open until you submit orders totaling 200 BV of product. Be aware, you’ll also be charged $21.95 every month for an online back-office and $99.95 per year for your annual subscription renewal.
4. Is Market America a scam? Not likely. They’ve been awarded the 2013 and 2018 BBB Torch Award for Ethics and have been listed among the 2018 Internet Retailer Top 500, 2013 Fast 50, and Grant Thomson 100—all of which gives them some legitimacy in the industry. Be aware, though, they have been accused of being an illegal pyramid company (which is almost a rite of passage for MLMs), largely because so few people are able to profit from their 2-year plan. While we wouldn’t call them a scam, we don’t believe their claims that joining will help you build a solid financial future.
5. What is Market America’s BBB rating? A+
6. How long has Market America been in business? Since 1992
7. What is Market America’s revenue? $820 million
8. How many Market America distributors are there? 190,000
9. What lawsuits have been filed? In 2017, Market America was slapped with a federal racketeering suit for allegedly operating an illegal pyramid scheme and making people believe the company gives them an unmatched financial opportunity. [1] In 2015, Market America sued Pamela Lee for breaching the Certified Trainer Agreement and the Speakers Bureau Agreement when she signed on with Ariix. [2] In 2009, Market America filed a lawsuit against Google and LTech Consulting for overpromising the enterprise search capabilities they could deliver. [3] In 2008, Steve Sawyer sued Market America for breach of contract and violation of the North Carolina Wage and Hour Act. [4] In 1999, Market America was countersued by Robin Christman-Orth for libel, slander, and unfair trade practices after being sued for unfair competition and the unauthorized use of its trade secrets. [5] Also in 1999, The SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) charged the founders with fraud related to illegal sales of Market America stock. [6]
10. Comparable companies: Amway, Ariix
Product-wise, there’s not much this company doesn’t offer. They pretty much have something for everyone to sell.
That being said, as far as passive income opportunities go, there are still better options out there.

Either way, here’s the full review on Market America.
Overview
Market America was founded in 1992 by JR and Loren Ridinger in Greensboro, NC. JR Ridinger was a former top Amway distributor, and Loren Ridinger is his wife.
They got off to a rocky start. Market America didn’t start taking off for nearly a decade, perhaps due to charges from the SEC in 1999 regarding violations of federal securities laws.
Like so many MLMs that go public and then run into problems with the SEC for sketchy behavior, Market America then decided to go private in 2001. By 2002, they were expanding internationally into Australia. Soon after they moved into Hong Kong, the Philippines, Mexico, and the UK.
As of 2011, they had 650 full-time employees, and they had really started to pick up some buzz.
In 2010, they acquired Shop.com, an online comparison shopping engine that touts some of the biggest former investors in the world, including Amazon, Yahoo, and Bill Gates himself. [7]
The same year, they reported $393 million in revenue, and they unveiled two new celebrity spokespeople: Scottie Pippen would rep their Prime Joint Support Formula by Isotonix, and Kim Kardashian, the physical definition of celebrity, made a guest appearance at their Annual International Convention to tout their Cashback program (lol at the idea that Kim K has any need for a Cashback program). [8]
By 2013, they were ranked 27th on the DSN’s Global 100.
If JR and Loren Ridinger are any indication of the company’s success, then it’s doing well. The couple is loaded—their laundry list of assets reads like a rap song by Rick Ross. They are multimillionaires with a 35,000 square foot mansion in Miami’s Biscayne Bay, a 150-square foot yacht on their dock, celebrity friends, and a $25 million condo in Manhattan. They’re 93% owners of what is now one of the top MLMs in the world. [9]
But you know as well as I do: a rich CEO does not a rich distributor make.
How much does Market America cost?
It costs $399 for an UnFranchise Business Owner Startup Kit, and that’s not including monthly fees.
You also have to meet a monthly minimum of $200 in personal sales to qualify for commissions.
Products
The Market America store is bigger than a Wal-Mart…literally. I’m not going to sit here and list out everything they sell, because they’ve got over 3,000 proprietary products.
Their products include…everything. Health tonics, household cleaners, makeup, weight-loss and nutritional supplements, fitness programs, gardening products…seriously, everything (see: Herbalife, Shaklee, or Melaleuca).
In addition to having their own proprietary products, Ridinger made the decision to purchase Shop.com, a website that sells all kinds of well-known name brands at cheaper prices, in order to turn the company into the next Amazon.com.
The most popular product is the one they got Scottie Pippen to rep back in 2010—Isotonix, a line of nutritional supplements. They go for $70 a bottle. You could find supplements with the same ingredients at your local drugstore for about $20 a bottle, but those don’t have an NBA star’s face on them.
Compensation Plan
Commission in the Market America compensation plan is built around a binary system, and you have to build out the two sides of your downline evenly. Actually, JR Ridinger claims that Market America is the inventor of the binary compensation plan and that hundreds of MLMs have tried to copy them but simply can’t beat their compensation.
There are a few ways to earn with this company.
Gross Retail Profit
Distributors earn retail profit off their personal sales, and exact amounts vary by product item.
There are two ways to earn this commission. Distributors can either carry inventory purchased at wholesale and sell it themselves at retail, or they can build up a network of preferred customers who continually order from them online each month on a monthly auto-ship program. Distributors can make up to 50% on retail profit.
Cashback Commission
This is cashback that a distributor makes on both their own personal purchases as well as their customers’ purchases. Cashback only comes from eligible products on Shop.com, and they have to be Market America-branded products, but it’s possible to earn up to 35% cashback on your own purchases and .5% cashback on the purchases of every customer you refer.
Team Earnings
If a distributor has developed a team of representatives that is equally distributed between right and left legs, they qualify for team commissions. Team commissions are paid out weekly based on a distributor’s weaker leg.
Distributors are capped at $3,600 in team commissions per week.
The company has generated over $2 billion in commissions and retail profits since opening up shop in 1992.
Recap
This company is booming, and I don’t think it’s going anywhere. Assuming they’ll beat the racketeering charges, which we don’t doubt. The Ridingers have the resources to take care of themselves.
This power couple has certainly made a name for themselves. But despite all their claims of wanting to “help people achieve their dreams,” they don’t seem to be making a name, or a paycheck, for most of their distributors. According to their career manual, the average Market America distributor makes under $1,000…per year.
That’s wayyy below poverty level income…in a third-world country.
Look, I’ve been involved with network marketing for over ten years so I know what to look for when you consider a new opportunity.

Cheap car insurance for 17 year olds?

Nationwide car insurance....?
So yea it was a snowy day in mississippi..... something that don't usually happen... I slided on ice and hit the guard rail... it was only 1 or maybe 2 bump... the car wasn't messed up that bad.... I mean there was a dent from the inital bump but what do you expect? The officer said when I asked them could they fix it he said probably... its not really bad at all.... and that the same thing I said... so I find out days later after they inspected it, they was gonna jump it and not fix it... so my question is why do we pay all these hundreds of dollars every month that when it comes to the company to their job, they don't do it? I think I was paying 240 every month for my 98 ford explorer... also do they suppose to pay me for the value of my car since they not fixing it? The reality of it that if I known this would have happen could I just save that money I was paying them these years and put the money in my pocket so when I crash I could take that money and buy me my own car instead of being carless when I was giving the money to the insurance company? I mean wuts the point of even paying them honestly?""

My Car Insurance won't cover this?!?!?
I got into an accident on a rainy day. I did not hold collision or comprehensive. Because I skidded into a ditch and the car rolled, an oil leak occurred. The fire department came and had to put oil dry on the oil leak which was saturating the ground. I hold all the other coverages (liability/property damage, underinsured/uninsured motorist/medical). The fire department bill for the oil leak clean up / hazard removal was $500. The car insurance company says it falls under collision and since I don't have it they don't have to pay out the $500. I insisted it was under liability / property damage as the oil leak is a hazard and causes property damage. Is this fair that they said it falls under collision? Or should I fight it. If so how?""

What are your rights if a person's car hits you and they don't have auto insurance?
This was a non-reportable vehicle accident. The person's car who hit mine was a manual and somehow came down the hill and hit my car. No one was in that person's car. But it rolled down and hit my car. I went to a dealer to get an estimate and it was about $955. I have car insurance, but the other guy doesn't. I have full coverage, but my deductible is $1000. What are my options? The owner of that car who hit me said that he is a mechanic and can fix my car. What should I do? Should I allow him or should I ask for his certification/license? I don't know if I can trust them either. I would rather have someone else fix it. Or should I just ask him to pay for the accident since he doesn't have car insurance? Is there a way where I don't have to pay anything? Any information what so ever will help out so much. Please give as much feed back as possible. I'm really looking for some possible answers.""

How do you fight with the other party's insurance company?
Hi, my car insurance covers for liability only and now I have an accident with a big truck. The big truck hit my car from the side. We were driving from 2 lanes next to each other and at one point the two lanes combine into one. While I was alittle pass over the truck, it hit me from the side. Their side has no damage since it is a big truck and our side has damaged from the driver side. The police report didn't explain clearly about whose fault it is except it mentions what the two drivers said. I think it is not my fault and the other driver denied it is his fault either. My insurance company didn't help much because we only have liability. Now, the other party insurance company called me and said they can't pay for the damanges since it is both parties fault. Therefore, pay for damanges on our own. Like I said, the other party didn't have any damages. If we have to fix it by ourselves, it will cost over $1500. :-( How should I fight with the insurance company to get my claims?""

Insurance not paying a claim!?
Boy this is a good one & I don't know what to do Next! I went with the Lizard insurance even though they are Snakes and don't want to pay for any Claims! It started in 2010 with my truck, I took it to where they told me and they only paid for cosmetic damage even though there was a lot more including my steering was so bad I had to stop driving it. I wanted to take it to a shop that I had my truck lowered which because of we're I lived and the shop was I couldn't drive it, 65 miles. I had AAA tow it to my new house and from there after 2 years of not driving my truck they agreed to have it towed 7 miles to the shop. Well I told the claims adjuster what was wrong, he told me I needed to write a list and drop it off at the shop so I just got my Chopper back from the shop and went down to where my truck was a wrote a list of what I thought was wrong. Here is where the first of my troubles started, on the way home I am riding on the freeway and a truck to the right of me had a blow out and a Giant tire flew right in front of me, I couldn't do anything other than to run it over. It happened so fast, I hit it and made a brown spot in my shorts, jk. I then noticed smoke coming from my Chopper, it was Bad so I pulled over and noticed that my tail light was knocked off and caused some damage and the bold that holds my tail light on came off and rubbed on my new Avon 250 tire and Melted the side wall. I was able to ride home and once I saw all the damage I knew it was a problem. I called the Lizard and made a claim. The claims adjuster called me and said he will be out that Saturday, so saturday came and I never heard from him, I had his number and left a message, so this went on until Thursday and I called the lizard again and they transferred me to the AH boss and I left him a voicemail. Well I didn't hear from him as a few more days went by so Called back and got his boss's boss. The next day I got a nasty voicemail from the claims adjuster bitching at me. I called customer service and told them he went off on me and they can hear my voicemail too but no one listened to me. So I was told to call his boss, I said then I don't want this claims adjuster to come out, I don't want to speak to him or have anything to do with him. They were so sorry and said they totally understand and later that day the big boss called and I told him I hadn't heard from the adjuster other than a nasty voicemail and I want someone else to come out and not him. The boss said I understand and he will take care of it. So two days later the rude claims adjuster showed up at my house to take care of the claim, I was shocked it was the AHole I didn't want to come out but his bosses boss told him he better get out there and take care of this. Well once he was there, he wasn't as nice as he had been and couldn't be more rude than he was. I told him what had happened and the Damage, all he said was Prove it, Prove it, Over and over with everything I showed him. It caused major damage to my shocks and front forks, he laughed and said they are designed to roll over things and that it couldn't happen from hitting a tire in the road, well it can because that's exactly what happened. He was such a AHole I said, why did you even come out, did you just come here to be a @ss Hole or what!! He didn't say a word and just left. They paid out just a little for damages to the paint, tail light and the tire. The tired was new and cost 500 but they paid me 100 bucks for it. Mean while my truck is at the shop still to get looked over for the damage and they didn't pay a dime and the worst part was when I got the truck back from being towed, I started after the tow truck drive let it down and it sounded funny, then I smelt burning plastic so I opened the hood and my entire air intake system was gone!!! The burning was th vacuum hoses laying on the headers. I called the shop where my truck was and they said they are not sure what's going on but to call back. Well they are no longer in business and I lost all that so I called and opened a claim, now they are investigating me over this. So I have damage from 2010 that has never been fixed, my bike isn't right and someone had stolen my Volant cold air intake that's not being taken care of. What do I do? This is BS, I don't deserve this from my insurance Company and for them to treat me like they have, not pay out the claims. I needed my truck smoged Dec 31st so because all the parts to have it smogged weren't there I couldn't have it down and I have a ton of late fees with the DMV in California. My Volant is smog legal, I have the Ca numbers for it but it doesn't matter, I am getting the run around like no tomorrow. I will Drop GIECO and go with Farmers but not until my truck and bike are fixed. I have called everyone I could at Geico and no help!""

State farm car insurance people?
I am writing to find out what my options might be-to see if you guys might have some feedback. Long story short-I was in an accident on 6/28, that was my date of loss, submitted the claim then, my car is in the process of being repaired-and it will be ready 7/23 which is ridiculous. Basically my renewal is up on 7/19-however, I wanted to switch to Geico. I have been with State Farm for 12 years and I am amazed at the service-or lack thereof-and their turn around time requirements. They are charging me $668.00 for the same exact coverage as Geico would for six months however, I've added towing/rental reimbursement with Geico and it's only $303/6 months. I have several policies with them, and should be getting a larger discount IMO. I've heard Geico is awesome with claims and have friends that have used them. I am writing to find out if I can switch during a claim process-has anyone else done this? Thanks!""

I found a nice little car, a 2001 RENAULT CLIO, 1.2 16V 3dr Hatchback. I used a price comparison site to get a basic idea of what the insurance would be on it - and using my real own details and it was 5993. So I messed around a bit and added my mum as a second/extra driver. The price crashed down to 3,153. The option to add another driver was still there so I added my dad too and the price is now 2,617 - much more in my price range. I called them in and was like look at this and what do you think and they both agreed that there was something wrong with it and there would be a catch somewhere but I disagree. They said it would affect their own no claims however when added a extra driver no information about an extra driver is there. Are they right that there would be a catch? And can someone give me some more information about this please! Thanks!""
Quick question about car insurance?
I've been with a car insurance company for 3 years now and have been lucky enough to not have to file any claims with them, I just had my policy renewed and the premium went up about $100 from the previous year. Prior to this it had always gone down and when I called to ask why it went up they said because of an increase in claims in my area, now I know insurance has many factors such as the area you live in, and even if that is true I feel as if I should call and mention that I've had no claims in my three years with them, no tickets on my record and always pay my 6 month premium at once, would this be a useless attempt at getting them to lower my premium or could this possibly help me? I just don't want to seem like a fool on the phone.""

What happens if you switch car insurance?
Had a policy with my mother and due to conflict between the family I got my own policy and she moved out of town and has her own. Is affordable (not free) health care a right or a privilege?
There are many constituancies in this debate not the least of which is individual health responsibility. That said the costs are driven in large part by greed. Insurance, hospitals, doctors, drug companies, lawyers, restaurants and the food industry and fraudsters all have a dog in this fight. If affordable health care is believed to be a right (I believe it is) then all of these constituants need to come together. Al Tennessee""

Boyfriend got into accident with my car..he has insurance/SR-22. Whose insurance will be responsible?
My boyfriend has had an insurance policy with an SR-22 on it for almost a year. It expires in 6 days. He was driving my car to work and got into an accident that was his fault. My car has barely any damage and I don't think the other car was severely damaged. My mom has an insurance policy on my car ( I live with her) But since my boyfriend was driving and he has insurance with the SR-22 doesn't that mean that it will go on his insurance? Isn't that the exact reason he had to have the SR-22 in the first place? So in case he screwed up (which he did) than it would be covered in any car he drives? Thanks.

Insurance company stepping over the line?
I was rear-ended last Friday. The lady who hit me was totally at fault, and admitted it to her insurance company. I have filed through my insurance company, gave them a verbal and recorded statement and my vehicle has been assessed with damages over $5000 dollars. Here's the catch....the insurance company of the lady who hit me calls me daily (leaves messages) asking me to talk and give a second recorded statement to them even though they know I have already given my insurance company one. I have talked to my insurance company about this...and they said legally I do not have to talk to them at all....I am not filing through them and that's that. Is this standard or is the other insurance company trying to be sneaky?? Thanks!""

""My car insurance was voided in the past, and now I can't get a quote anywhere, can anyone help?!?""
When I started learning to drive at 17, I decided to buy my self a cheap car so that I'd be able to get more experience behind the wheel, pass my test quicker and have a car as soon as I passed my test. I was insured on my provisional license with an insurance company which specialised in learner drivers. However, I ended up getting 3 points on my license the week before I passed my test, in what I still think were pretty unfair circumstances. My house doesn't have a drive or a garage and so I had to park my car on the road in front of my house, or on a street round the corner when there were no spaces. As it was my first car I was really excited, and without understanding that I could get in trouble for it, I used to sometimes sit in my car and listen to music with my friends. The week before I passed my test we were sat chatting when a police car came down the road and pulled up behind us. Someone had broken into some allotments nearby and they were questioning us as to if we had seen anything. They searched my car- for tools that could suggest we had done it I presume, and when they found nothing they ran my license and obviously realised I only had a provisional license. I still at this point didn't realise I had done anything wrong, I wasn't driving the car, simply sat in it so I didn't realise I had committed an offence. The police informed me that because the engine was running, I could have been driving or about to drive and on that basis they convicted me for driving without a license. I only got 3 points and a 60 fine due to the fact I wasn't actually driving and at the time I accepted that with relief, I was terrified I'd get a ban or lose my license or get a massively unaffordable fine. I could have appealed but that would have meant going to court and I was only 17 and that terrified me. I declared the points to my insurance company straght away, but due to the nature of the offence my insurance was invalidated and void. I've only just now realised how serious having insurance voided in the past is. I'm supposed to be moving a 5 hours away in a few months for a job, and I have plenty of money saved for car insurance and a car, as without a car, the move is completely unrealistic. Without a car I won't be able to get to work as the hours are unsocial and my job isn't very well connected with public transport at all and so relying on public transport or taxis is simply not an option. I found a car, went to get an insurance quote, and found out that getting insurance is practically impossible when you've had insurance voided in the past. The points don't seem to be a problem, when I tell companies about my points but not about my insurance voided in the past they happily give me a quote. They're expensive, but affordable and it's what I was expecting. However, as soon as I tell them that my insurance was voided in the past they refuse to even give me a quote. I'm completely out of options and I don't know what to do. I need a car, but I can't get insurance as much as I try. I know I was in the wrong, but it seems like the voided insurance is more of a punishment than the points are and surely that isn't right? And the voided insurance will stay with me for the rest of my life, so does that mean that driving will never be an option for me? I'm sorry for the essay, I just really don't know what to do! If anyone's been in a similar situation with voided insurance or know of a company that would insure me then please let me know! Just anything that would help, let me know! Thank you so much in advance and sorry again for the babbling!""

""Pregnant with no health insurance, Texas?""
Is anyone familiar with Texas Department of Health and Human Services. I just found out I am pregnant yesterday, two days ago my husband was laid off work. His old company added an HSA for us in December and we were under the impression everything was fine with employment if they added this for our family. I finally had a family HSA as of 1/1/12 and then on 1/3/12 it was taken away. He worked 90 hours on his last paycheck almost the most of the year, and was told work is slow so he was being laid off. They also added back matching 401k this year too, yep! We have been trying for years and had no idea this would happen this way. It is just crazy! So I found out on the website for HHS of Texas the income level for benefits. I am right there underneath the level for 2 people. Do they include the unborn child as a 3rd family member yet? Also I saw that you have to list assest out like vehicles. We have two cars and that is it. We make payments on both of them, so is it possible they will deny us since we have these assets. Other than those we have no other assets. But I remember my mom being denied for SSI on my brother due to assets so I am worried. Please can anyone help ease my mind?""

when I search for this all I get is spam about how much you could save on your insurance. if it's not that then it: motorcycle gear, shows, accessories, video, ect. Thinking about the differences; the cost of replacing the bike is less, the damage it could do it less, the injury to others is less, the injury to yourself is greater, it seems like it should be cheaper. espically considering that your health insurance will cover most of your injury costs this kind of insurance seems lower risk. But I wanna know from other bikers, is it cheaper?""

Becoming car insured in Ontario?
Recently I just acquired my G2. I am an almost-17 year old male, and I wanted to try to clear up a few questions about insurance before going to get some quotes. Firstly, would it be possible for me to have my own separate policy? With my own car - that's how my dad wants it apparently... I know it would be expensive..but I would probably end up choosing only liability coverage. Secondly, would it be possible to somehow prove to the insurance company that I am more responsible than the average stereotypical 17 year old male in hopes of lowering insurance? For example, can high school marks play a factor? I've heard about something like this, although I don't know if it applies to our provincial policies. I know the other factors, such as having a 4 door used sedan, in-class driving course etc. can also help lower the cost. All help is appreciated, thanks!""

Car insurers recommendations?
hi there people, Since passing my test in December, I have been looking to buy (and insure) a car. Shortly I will be able to afford a little run around and have been getting insurance quotes for cars like the Fiesta and Corsa. I have noticed that over the last few months comparison site quotations have jumped from an average of 1800 to 3000 for someone in my circumstances. I have read and understand why car insurance has been hiked up, no win no fee claims are more popluar, fraud and bogus claims and economic recession are responsible for a massive increase in car insurance premiums...Im so angry at these things. I cannot believe this as I though 1800 was extortionate to begin with. I have found Elephant insurance who are quoting me reasonable prices however, back to around the 1800 mark. Please can you recommend any other good car insurers for first time drivers. I am 33 and live in Manchester England. All the big name insurance sites that appear on comparison sites see like a rip off, so any smaller insurers you have had experience of would be useful;, Thanks.""

Car insurance advice?
I cancelled my car insurance with liberty mutual about a year and a half ago. I owed them about $700 which I payed off a few weeks ago. I was looking to insure with them again until they told me my down payment would be the whole years worth of payments which is almost $4000, due to previous cancellation and nonpayment. Then they told me the best they could do would be half of the years total. My question is, if I go to other companies are they all going to tell me the same thing for down payments on policies? I do not owe any money to any company at this time.""

Car insurance increase?
my friend was pulled over for speeding while unlicensed due to a 6 month lapse in insurance, she was arrested and charged with a misdimeanor of aggrivated unlicensed operation of a vehicle as well as speeding 20 miles over the speed limit. She had at least one other ticket from several months ago that she never paid. it was for talking on a cell phone (illegal in nys). She has gotten other tickets in the past as well but those have long since been taken care of. She is 25. she believes that her car insurance is only going to be $80 a month in a few months when she is able to get her license back, and told me that the speeding ticket it will raise it a little, but the driving without a license and not paying car insurance for 6 months does not affect her rate. Can someone prove her wrong? Has anyone experienced an increase in their car insurance because of a lapse or becuase they were arrested for driving without a license?""
Incorrect no claims bonus quoted on my renewal for car insurance?
I have recently had my renewal quote through from my current car insurer and have noticed it states more years for my no claims bonus then I've actually got. I've looked back at my previous paperwork and it looks like I made a massive error. I really wanted to stay with the same insurer but know I will need to inform them of the error. Has anyone been in this situation before? Not sure what happens! :0

I know that too many inquiries will look bad on a credit report. The guy at my current insurance office said inquiries for auto insurance aren't the same as others and dont bring my credit score down. Im not sure if he's lying or not. The last time I checked my report, I had 2 inquiries on it from when they looked for the best rate for me last time in Sept. He also said they could shop for me (for the best rate) at agencies that dont go off of credit scores . Why are there some agencies that use my credit score and some that don't- whats the difference? Does it affect my score/ look bad in general to have sevral inquiries from auto insurance agencies?""

Car insurance for married couple!?
Hey there! My wife and I both used to have our own car insurances until a few months ago when we decided to drop hers and add her to my policy to save some money. She got into an accident the other day; everyone's okay and it hasn't been determined who was at fault yet. I was wondering if this is going to affect MY driving record as well considering that we are sharing a car insurance policy? I realize that our premium might go up but I guess I want to know if the premium would go up even if we decided to get her off of this policy and find her a separate one with another insurance company. Do insurance companies look at which driver and which vehicle (we each have our own car) was involved in the accident or does it all just go by the policy number?
