It was a late afternoon and Jungkook just got back to the dorm, coming from his walk around the park after endlessly walking in circles, after finding out the truth about his girlfriend’s situation from her best friend.

He went straight to his room without making his presence known to his hyungs who were in the studio. If he sees any of them at his current state, he’ll just breakdown and put the heavy burden on them.

He locked himself in his room, breaking down in tears as he was safe inside his four walled sanctuary. He let himself embrace the pain of having someone you love suffering, wishing you were in their shoes, taking the pain away. 

But you can’t. You can’t really do anything. 

“y/n ah…” he cried her name out in pain, clutching on his chest.

He had his back resting on his door, slowly sliding down until he was sitting on the floor, still feeling the throbbing pain in his chest and the twisting of his insides.

He felt weak. He hates the feeling of being helpless and not being able to do anything, especially for that one girl he promised to protect with all his life. He can’t do anything with his girl’s life on the line. 

He felt useless and pathetic.

“Jungkook ah?” A voice was heard from the outside, making the young lad get a grip on himself, wiping out the tears as he tries to stand up. He wiped his face the second time around, hoping he’d done enough before opening the door.

“Yah, where have you bee– What happened?” Jimin stopped when he saw the face of their youngest.

“Nothing, what’s up?” Jungkook asked, sniffing.

“Did you cry?” Jimin asks, not believing the youngest that everything was okay.

“No, I did not.” The younger answered, discreetly avoiding the older’s gaze.

“You’re sniffing.” Jimin pointed out.

“It’s just my rhinitis.” He answers.

Jimin sighed in defeat. He knows how stubborn Jungkook is.

“The others are in the studio, talking about the upcoming album. Come on.” Jimin says, grabbing the younger’s wrist to the room where the others were.

~The next day~

“Hey…” y/n said quietly as she lay down in her hospital bed.

“I’m sorry…” Jungkook’s voice was soft, but it was breaking. “I didn’t know–”

“Shh, don’t be.” She said, taking his hand in her small, fragile ones. “I’m the one who should be apologizing. You had to know from someone else.”

Tears were now uncontrollably falling, rolling down on Jungkook’s cheeks as he sees the girl he loves with pail lips and thin arms, her facial features saying she was so exhausted but still trying to smile despite everything.

“I love you” he whispered in a cracking voice, suddenly giving in as he cried on the shoulder of the young girl, embracing her fragile body carefully.

“I love you too,” she whispered back, hugging him back as she hides her tears.

“Promise me you’ll recover.” Jungkook muttered, his face buried in her hair.

“Be strong.” She answers. “I’ll be okay.”

Jungkook got back to the dorm, taking his personal DSLR in his hands as he scrolls over the pictures he took, back when they were still in high school.

Walking down the street, y/n was holding her bag strap as she looked down on her shoes, covering her beautiful face by her straight, silky hair. Pre-occupied by her thoughts, she didn’t notice the guy following her cheekily with a grin that cannot be wiped off his face.

Knowing that her attention is far from noticing him, he creeped behind her with a smirk then suddenly shouted.

“y/n ah!”

“Yah! What was that for?!” y/n asked in surprise as her boyfriend took a picture with her totally unprepared and super close up!

“Got my new camera! Worth all the savings for so many years!” he smiled widely, showing off his kiddy grin.

“Delete it! Delete the picture now!” She demanded, but Jungkook just chuckled and shook his head.

“Never!” He said teasingly, earning a playful kick on the leg from y/n “YAH!” Jungkook held his leg, jumping on one foot. “What was that for?!”

y/n just went ahead, walking away from the leaping guy as she stifle her laugh to herself while the young lad tried to catch up with her given his single leaping foot.

Jungkook smiled at the memories taking as he slid his fingers towards the screen. He stood up and went to his computer, grabbing the memory card and placing it in.

“I think I’ll print a few” He said with a soft smile on his lips, scrolling through the memories taken by it. He never felt more thankful for the camera for capturing every moment he had with y/n. All those treasured memories that can never be forgotten, memories with evidences that it truly happened.

Jungkook took his time admiring the power of a device that was able to preserve wonderful moments that passed by in a blink of an eye.

Meanwhile, in the hospital, y/n was talking with the doctor as soon as visiting hours were through.

“There’s something I think you should know.” Her doctor said quite alarmingly, but y/n took a deep breath and readied herself for the worst.

“Your brain tumor isn’t getting any better. We need to prepare your body for a surgery, but given your condition… you might not be able to survive it. Our last hope will be the arrival of our new equipment from abroad, but it will surely… be costly. And it might take time. If you can fight until then, you’ll be our priority patient.”

“How long do I have to wait?” y/n asks, trying to keep her shaking voice from showing.

“In a few weeks, maybe 3 to 4?”

“I can make it.” She said, mostly to convince herself.

“Yes of course you can, dear. But let me warn you, okay? You might, but I hope not, temporarily lose your memories from time to time. You may also lose your vision too. But if you stay strong and fight, we’ll be here to help you.”

“M..may I ask the chance of my survival?”

“If you lose hope now, then its not gonna look good. Keep fighting and I can promise a 60/40.”

She was left tongue tied. No matter how determined she was, she only has 10% above half of her possible death. As soon as the doctor took her leave, y/n cried in fear. She doesn’t want to leave so soon, but if it’s time, she wants it less painful for the ones she love. Especially for him.

Jungkook woke up the next day, only to be greeted by his supposedly hyung, jumping up and down his bed.

“We have a month long break before the promotions~” Taehyung sang, jumping up and down on his bed.

“Get off.” He muttered sleepily.

“Ohhhh~ y/n looks so pretty in this picture.” The older one says, making the younger sit up quickly before grabbing the picture out of his hyung’s hands.

“Why do you have so many?” Taehyung wasn’t a bit bothered by Jungkook’s sudden actions. He kept looking at a couple more pictures scattered on Jungkook’s desk.

“I was supposed to print only a few… but I couldn’t choose which one to print so…” Jungkook mumbled to himself.

“Hyung, where are the others?” Jungkook suddenly asks.

“Still sleeping. Jin hyung and Hobi hyung went to their families for a week. We have 5 days of rest and the following weeks are for practices.”

“Tell the others I’ll be going first. Don’t wait for me, okay?” Jungkook said, scrambling to take his towel and shower quickly. After a few minutes of getting ready, he went out of his room to grab a slice of bread before waving goodbye to Taehyung and the newly woken up Namjoon.

“Where is he going so early in the morning?” Namjoon asked sleepily.

“Beats me. Want some popcorn?” Taehyung smiled, offering a bucket of popcorn to his hyung.

“Where the hell did you get that?”

Jungkook went to y/n early, but he was greeted by someone who got his blood boiling.

“Stay away from her.” He ran to the sleeping y/n’s side while glaring at the man in front of the hospital bed she was laying on.

“Since when?” He asked in the verge of tears. Tears Jungkook can never trust whether it was sincere or not.

“Since when did you care” Jungkook spat. The man laughed bitterly to himself, letting a tear escape and roll down his cheek.

“I deserved that.” he softly mumbled. “I didn’t know her mother passed away… Just when I thought I could make things right–”

“Just leave. y/n was better off without you.”

“I…” The man was looking for the words to say, but clearly nothing was coming out of his mouth. “I guess you’re right. Take care of my daughter, Jungkook-ah. You’ve always been the man to stay by her side all this time.” He said, sparing a last glance at the young lady before leaving the room.

Jungkook huffed, trying to shake off the memories he had with y/n crying in the park with bruised limbs or beaten-up lip.

Jungkook was suddenly alarmed at the soft hics from y/n. He looked down at her and saw her crying, muffling her sobs with her hand covering her mouth. His heart squeezed at the sight, helping her sit down as he enclosed her in his arms.

“I won’t let him hurt you anymore, I promise.” He muttered as she clutched onto Jungkook’s shirt.

“Appa…” she cried softly.

For the rest of the rest days granted to them, Jungkook had always been beside y/n until visiting hours were through. Once their practice started, Jungkook would still visit in the evening, bringing her favorite foods and just spending time together.

“Jungkook, help me up?” y/n asked, as she pointed to the bathroom. Jungkook was quick to help her. It took sometime before y/n could go back out, and when she did, she found Jungkook sleeping as he leaned on the hospital bed. y/n slowly approached him, softly caressing his hair.

“I love you, pabo. You’re pushing yourself too much…” she whispered as she softly kissed the top of his head.

Suddenly, a sharp pain was felt and y/n couldn’t help but grunt, choking in the screams of pain as to not wake up Jungkook, but he did anyway.

“y/n? What’s wrong?” Jungkook sat up in a panic, seeing y/n’s face contorted in pain.

She couldn’t help but choke in more sobs as she fell on her knees and Jungkook quickly shouted for help and running back to his girlfriend on the floor.

“y/n..” He was softly shaking her, panic disorienting him.

y/n’s vision was blurry, but she was able to feel Jungkook’s tears on her cheeks. She reached out, touching the damp cheeks of the guy in front of her as she forced to smile.

“I’ll be okay,” she whispered before the nurse rushes in and helps her up. They started shouting medical terms, all in a hurry as Jungkook helplessly watched.

“You’re gonna be okay,” Jungkook says, but he wasn’t sure to whom was he saying it. Was it to encourage y/n, or was it to convince himself that she will be okay?

It has gotten hard to visit when practices started getting more serious, especially since they have just started a new choreography for a new song. Still, Jungkook kept trying. He kept asking permission from their manager, asking his members and whoever he could for help. The others are still unaware of what is making their youngest so restless, but they couldn’t be of any help.

Jungkook wasn’t able to do anything but send texts to her daily, asking how she was and saying that he’ll come see her as soon as he could.

It was only after two weeks that they were allowed half a day of rest. Jungkook didn’t miss a heartbeat as he went directly to the hospital, not even bothering to change. He grabbed his bag and thought he could just shower in the hospital. He just really wanted to see y/n first.

His excitement couldn’t be contained as he half sprinted in the hospital towards y/n’s room.

As he stood in front of her door, he stopped for a moment to catch his breath. His bunny smile was able to lift the spirits of the nurse who saw him, but who the smile for was none other than y/n.

As he opened the door, he saw her sitting on her bed, reading a book. A wave of relief and happiness engulfed him. She wasn’t as weakly as the time he last saw her.

“y/n ah~” Jungkook cooed, entering the room with a smile.

“…yes? May I help you?” y/n answered, confusion evident in her face.

“What do you mean?” Jungkook’s smile was slowly being wiped from his face. “Yah, y/n ah, what’s wrong?”

“Perhaps…” y/n says, putting the book on her bed side “Are you an old friend of mine?” She smiles, her question ever so innocent.

“Jagiya…” He whispered, his bag dropping from his shoulder.

“I’m sorry, I don’t mean to offend you…” She says, her head hung low “but I…”

Jungkook dreaded to hear what’s coming next.

“I really don’t remember much.”

Puckmon Ruins Everything

"Shakkomon, Digivolve to...Ebidramon!"

"Scorfamon, Digivolve to...Taivenmon!"

Once the two opponents finished evolving the announcer went on with his summary of the match, "The final round is about the begin folks! Our champion Olivia and her partner Taivenmon are still in the lead, but challengers Dietrich and Ebidramon are not far behind"

Liv glared across the stadium at the other Tamer, who was too far away to see her expression himself, but there was a huge monitor behind each of them so that the audience could better see the action. Judging by the way Dietrich flinched, he must have looked up into the monitor while a camera panned over her determined expression.

Taivenmon trotted to her side, she patted his snout affectionately and whispered "Don’t hold back".

After a few moments of anticipation the announcer returned to lay out the rules for the game. As he spoke, obstacles appeared on the field, "Your challenge is to make it to the center of the Maze, clearing out as many Bugs as you can. When both opponents reach the center, the battle begins! We will have a three hit point system, and a total of three turns, hit are worth 100 points, with a maximum of 900 points available in the battle segment"

The gates releasing the Digimon into the arena started to rise, revealing a labyrinth that aerial shots showed was littered with Bugs.

"Every Bug is tagged with a counter, destroying one Bug is worth ten points. The winner will be determined by who tallies the most points between the puzzle segment and the battle segment. Challengers, on your mark! GO!"

Liv tapped away at her D-Gauntlet, equipping Taivenmon with low grade armor so that the Bugs couldn't do too much damage. They were about the same in power as a champion level Digimon, and in small groups like in a standard Coliseum match they were easy enough to take out, so Liv didn't want to waste higher quality armor.

There were enough Bugs in the maze to make a swarm, which could be nasty if they all found each other, but the game moderators made sure to keep them contained away from one another. If they did swarm the participants would likely be destroyed since the level limit for the Coliseum was Champion. If a Digimon could evolve further than that, they could no longer sign up for the Coliseum events. Liv didn't know the secret to unlock her partner’s next evolution and doubted many of the spectators did, either.

But it didn't matter, Liv wasn’t looking to evolve Scorfamon further anymore. She needed to focus on the challenge that was in front of her, and nothing else.

Liv tried her best to guide Taivenmon through the maze and keep track of the number of Bugs he eliminated, but the cameras could not pick up every detail of the match. Ebidramon beat them to the arena in the center, but Taivenmon had turned into many dead-ends simply to look for Bugs. Victory was all that mattered, and if there was a chance that a higher Bug count could mean that Ebidramon and Dietrich could win, he wasn’t taking it.

Finally Taivenmon was bored of the Bug hunt and barreled his way to the center, knocking down walls and crushing Bugs that got in his way. The low grade armor glitched and vanished, sustaining too much damage to be of any use anymore but it didn’t matter. Rookies could use battle items, but Champion level Digimon weren't allowed the handicap unless it was for use against obstacles.

Taivenmon burst into the arena with a few Bugs on his tail. Liv crossed her arms in a confident stance for the camera "Finish him, Taivenmon!" She shouted, as the battle began.

It was close to 9:00 pm before Olivia and Scrofamon returned from the Network to their quiet home in the American Northwest. The boar-like Digimon snorted and hopped up on the bed, ready to fall straight to sleep and his partner turned back to her computer to check her e-mail.

For the most part it was spam from a few stores she had a membership at and homework reminders from her teachers, there was nothing much there. Except for a E-mail from Andromon, a former contact of hers. She hovered over the e-mail titled AUCTION: TWO WEEKS, but was distracted from actually reading it by her bedroom door opening.

Samantha, her little sister beamed when she saw they were back, “I knew it was you, Liv!” She said in a hushed, but excited tone as she invited herself in to pet Scrofamon, who raised his head and grunted happily, “Mom’s pretty mad at you for not calling, but I talked her into saving you some dinner.”

The sisters had the same face, although the younger had wider, brighter eyes. Sammie, as she was called, kept her short, naturally red hair held in place with a green headband.

“Yeah, thanks.” Liv replied, closing out of her e-mail and lowering all her browsers, but not before Sammie saw the blog page for the Network, and the Coliseum leaderboard where her sister’s name was printed at the top.

“Is that the game you’re always playing?” The little girl asked dropping her hands from Scrofamon to skip over to her sister’s computer curiously, “Can I have a turn?”

Liv stood from her computer abruptly, “Get out of my room Sammie!” She demanded with a sudden burst of anger that made even Scrofamon jump. “Shouldn’t you have gone to bed hours ago anyway!?”

Sammie looked hurt, in fact, Liv could see tears welling up in her bright green eyes, but her little sister retreated out of the room without complaint…Although once the door was closed again, Liv made out the faint sound of her sister’s sobs. She sat back down and buried her face in her hands, wanting to cry herself.

“Liv? You gonna be okay, kiddo?” Scrofamon asked, standing up on her bed.

She looked over at him with a nod, “I…I’ll be fine…” She lied, and her lie became even more obvious when her eyes landed on a photograph on her desk. The picture showed Olivia holding up Sammie for the photo, but at her side was another red-haired child, younger than Liv, but older than Sammie.

Tears welled up in Liv’s eyes, she slammed the photograph down, and stood back up once more. “I’m going to go get that dinner, do you want anything to drink?”

Scrofamon laid back down. “No…I’m fine…” He said, snuggling into his partner’s bed sheets. Liv tiptoed out of her room, Sammie may have noticed she was back, but the last thing she wanted was to explain to her parents what she’d been doing out so late.

A world away, the day was just beginning for Isamu and Ju.

“Wemicmon, stay off the path or someone might see you!” Isamu hissed, while he waited for Aki to pick up. His Digimon pouted and tried to argue, but a jogger coming down the trail forced him to duck back into the bush, “Hey, Aki!” Isamu said when his friend finally picked up, “Yeah, man, I’m sorry to bail last minute, but Ju- yeah, the transfer student, yes- yeah she still has some catching up to do so she and I are going to be studying today.”

He paused for  a moment to let Aki speak, “No, it’s okay, I already called Masato and he told me the same thing. I’ll try to be there tomorrow, but I can’t make any promises. Hey! It’s a tough course, maybe you could benefit from a little studying. Aww, go practice swimming you fish out of water!” Isamu laughed as Aki teased him and taunted the other boy right back in a playful manner. “Alright…Alright, yeah, hopefully tomorrow. If not, catch ya Monday. See you!”

Isamu sighed when he finally hung up, “You know, you could tell me where you saw this cabin and I could find it myself.” Ju said, adjusting the straps of her backpack absentmindedly, “Then you could play soccer with your friends.”

“You’re my friend too, Ju,” Isamu said, “And don’t worry, Aki and Masato are fine with this.”

“But you’re lying to them,” She replied, “We’re not studying, we’re trying to find a place to keep our Digimon.”

This was true, Ju had made it clear the same night that Isamu got the goggles he was now proudly wearing, that the Digimon could not be kept in their homes for very long. Ju had Cannismon and Leptomon hide out in an abandoned warehouse that wasn’t far from her family’s home before they moved to Japan. She’d been on the look out for a similar place now that they were here.

Isamu wished he could keep Wemicmon at his apartment, but the rapscallion was too rowdy, his mother wasn’t going to buy that Isamu was just talking too loud on the phone for very long. His suggestion was an old cabin he’d found while exploring the nearby woods a few weeks ago. His original plan had been to clean it up and use it as a hang out for when he started making friends with everyone.

Ha. Two months after changing schools and he had six friends, only three of which were human. “Cannismon, Leptommon, you’re going the wrong way!” Isamu called, looking out for the twin Digimon that were partnered to Ju, “That’s the main trail, everyone goes that way!”

“And you’re sure that you went down this fork, not one of the other ones?” Ju asked, nervously looking back as if she was trying to keep track of their location.

“Yeah, I walked this way three or four times just to be sure I memorized the path.” Isamu said. Cannismon and Leptomon ran out ahead of them, playfully nipping at each other’s ears and tails. “So how do you meet Twin One and Twin Two?” He asked.

Ju smiled after her partners, “Not like how you met Wemicmon.” She said, and went quiet for a few minutes. “I was never good at making friends. I was always inside reading or drawing when I was little and when I was old enough, I made all of my friends online. That’s actually how I first heard about the Network. I kept reading about it on forums and things, but I couldn’t figure out how I was supposed to get an account there.”

Isamu blinked, remembering the login screen on the Network’s page and how it didn’t seem to have an option to allow new members to register. “Huh, so I guess people can’t just stumble across the Network, can they?”

She shook her head, “Nope. I kept trying to get in though, I e-mailed some friends I made and tried to get a good word in to Admins, but that didn’t work, so I eventually tried to hack my way in.”

“They didn’t like that?”

“I don’t think they noticed.” Ju said with a shrug, “But someone else did.”

Isamu turned to her curiously, “Who?”

“Gray.” Ju replied, ahead of them, Cannismon and Leptomon stopped and turned back, waving their tails excitedly at the mention of the name, “He’s the most famous Tamer ever. He’s said to be one of the first humans to ever partner with Digimon and helped build the Network. Of course I didn’t know that at the time.”

“What did he say to you?”

Ju smiled again, “He didn’t say anything. I got an e-mail regarding my attempts at hacking, I thought I was in trouble, but when I finished reading he was requesting that I apply as a beta tester. It took me nearly a week to decide that it was a legit offer before I accepted…” She trailed off.

“And then what happened?” Isamu asked, stepping closer to her.

“I was sucked into the Digital World.” She answered, “Not the Network, but the actual Digital World, where the Digimon come from. Gray was waiting for me there. He  told me everything about the Digital world, and the Digimon. We talked for hours. At the end he asked me a few questions about where I learned code and my thoughts on balance and teamwork was. After a while he seemed to decide I was a good applicant and he gave me a Digi-egg.”

“A whatnow? Is that like the Digicures?”

“No, A Digi-egg is what Digimon start off as.” Ju explained, “All those Digimon you saw in the Network, all the big and little ones, no matter what species or type, they all hatched from Digi-eggs and evolved into the forms you saw there.”

“I see.” Isamu said, and looked back at their Digimon, and filled in the blanks for himself, “Then that egg that Gray gave you, it hatched into Cannismon and Leptomon, didn’t it?”

Ju nodded, “Twin Digimon are incredibly rare, to my understanding. I only know one other species set, Terriermon and Lopmon.” She pulled up her D-Gauntlet and pressed a button to scroll through her Digimon Analyzer to show Isamu the twins, two little Rabbit looking Digimon who, like Cannismon and Leptomomon, differed in only color and minor details.

She put her hand back down, “Gray told me that a very special Digimon was going to hatch from this egg and that they needed a very special Tamer if they were going to grow up right. He told me not to accept the Digi-egg if I didn’t think I could handle the responsibility.”

“Wow. And you accepted it?” Isamu gave an impressed whistle, “Man, if someone told me something like that, I’d think they had the wrong guy.”

“That crossed my mind, but…” Ju placed her hand on her D-Gauntlet, “I don’t know, when I saw the egg…when I touched it…I knew I had to hatch it and take care of the Digimon that came out.” She paused and laughed, “They’re a bit of a handful, but I know I made the right decision.”

She looked up when Leptomon called, “Look! There it is! Cannismon, I told you Isamu wouldn’t get us lost!”

“I didn’t say I thought he would, I just said I hoped he wouldn’t.” Cannismon muttered, casting a glance at Isamu as if apologizing for doubting him.

The twins raced each other to the cabin, but Wemicmon was the first to get there. And that, of course, meant he was the first to get into trouble that was waiting. Just as Wemicmon was declaring himself the victor, a circle of black gems encased in multicolored fire appeared around him and shrank in on his body, making him cry out in pain.

“Wemicmon!” Isamu ran to check on his partner, Wemicmon looked more surprised than hurt, and hopped to his feet immediately.

“Who’s there!?” He demanded, flashing his claws defensively, “Show yourself!”

A snicker answered him, “Well, well, what a surprise! I didn’t know the circus performed this deep in the woods.” The voice came from the roof of the cabin, where a small humanoid figure was looking down at them, “This is my place, I found it first!”

Isamu pulled down his goggles to get a reading on the Digimon, “Puckmon, rookie level,  says he's a fairy type Digimon.”  Isamu read the facts off for Ju so she wouldn’t have to scan the enemy Digimon, “He's part of the Nature Spirits and Virus Busters with a Data attribute.”

Puckmon stood up and leaned over the rooftop, revealing himself a little better. He certainly didn’t bring to mind the image of a fairy. At a glance he could have been mistaken for a child in a costume, looking largely human except for his long tail and cloven hooves. He had pale green skin and a small animal-like nose, feathered red hair and a set of horns poked out of the back of his slightly oversized helmet, resembling a faun from English folklore. Puckmon wore a torn black poncho, gloves, and pants.

He tapped his hoof in an annoyed fashion, “You seem to know an awful lot about me, dweeb.” Puckmon snorted, “You stalking me or something?”

Isamu pushed his goggles back on top of his forehead, “No! I just-”

Ju cut him off, “-We’re sorry to disturb you,” She said, “But how long have you been here?”

Puckmon crossed his arms, with a smirk on his face, “Got here this morning!”

Seeing the opportunity to wipe that smug look off his face, Isamu mirrored his action of crossing his arms and glared up at Puckmon, ready to announce that, actually they’d found this place first-

-But Wemicmon beat him to the punch, “Too bad, sucker!” The cat-like Digimon said, raising his claws, “Isamu scoped out this place weeks ago! It’s our spot!”

Puckmon almost fell off the roof in surprise, “What!? No way, you’re lying!”

Leptomon backed up her friend, “Nope. Isamu said he found this place while he was exploring!”

A low growl came from the roof, “I’ve been searching days for a place to crash! I’m not gonna give it up that easily!” Puckmon snarled, he snapped his fingers and the same circle of black stones appeared “Lurid Crystals!”

Wemicmon once again found himself as the victim of this attack, becoming trapped in the ring of Crystals that shrank inwards on him. “Wemicmon!” Isamu started to reach for his D-Gauntlet to use a Digicure, but Ju stopped him.

“Better save Digicures for emergencies only.” She said and turned back to the battle, “Cannismon! Leptomon!”

The twins leaped onto the roof with Puckmon, appearing on either side of him, which caused him to jump back and- stumble over the edge. “Wah! Ooof!” Both Puckmon and Wemicmon groaned in pain as the black-clad Digimon landed on the other.

Unperplexed by this development, the twins jumped back down to face Puckmon, Wemicmon threw the other Digimon off him and raised his fists, claws beginning to glow with his signature technique “Fever-”

Puckmon jumped up, waving his hands wildly, “Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!  I was just playing! You’re welcome to stay at my place!” He declared and dusted himself off, “Besides, three on one? Puh-lease! In a real fight you’d need at least three more guys before you could take me on!”

The Digimon glanced at their human partners, clearly seeing through this guy’s boasting. Isamu decided to let it slide for now as he tapped Ju on the shoulder, “I think this guy is just a harmless stray Digimon.” he whispered.

Ju nodded in agreement as Puckmon, warily shook hands with Wemicmon and attempted to open the door to the cabin. “I think so too.” She replied, “He might be here looking for a partner. Maybe we should help him out.”

“Door’s open, come on in, guys. What’s that saying? Me kas-ha is two Kas-ha or something like that?” Puckmon said, waving for all of them to enter.

“What does that mean?” Cannismon asked as she followed her sister inside.

Puckmon shugged, “Eh, I don’t know it’s some human language, I think it’s French. I heard someone say it a couple times.” He seemed to glare at the humans as they approached the door, but didn’t say anything as they entered.

“Oh! Mi casa es tu casa.” Ju exclaimed as she turned to Isamu, “I’m pretty sure that’s Spanish.” She corrected.

The Digimon scattered to check out the cabin. It was very dusty and plants were growing out of the floor, but none of them seemed to mind. Isamu and Ju wiped the table and chairs with disinfectant towels that Ju had brought and sat down while the Digimon explored and evaluated.

“I’ve only been here for a few days,” Ju said, “I don’t know anyone well enough to even begin trying to match as a Tamer for Puckmon.”

“You told me Digimon don’t choose their partner.” Isamu reminded her.

Ju shrugged, “The bond between Digimon and Tamers is complicated, sometimes humans just need to talk to each other and sometimes they need to fight together before a partnership is formed.” She explained, “And no matter what, Puckmon needs to at least meet a few people before he can get a partner. So got any ideas?”

Isamu frowned, he had a few, but none of them were good. “I haven’t been here very long either. I pretty much only know two…Actually three people we might be able to talk to.”

“And who are they?” Ju asked, “Aki and Masato?”

“Yeah, that’s two of them…but…I don’t know, Puckmon seems a bit too rough for Aki, that Digimon would eat him alive. And Masato…He’s a bit of a trouble maker, they’d probably only encourage each other’s bad behaviors.”

“Uh-huh…” Ju mulled this information over, “And the third? You said you know three people.”

Isamu nodded, “Yeah, the third….Well…” He’d been thinking about that girl, Kaiyo Nakano. They’d really only talked a couple of times, but she seemed nice enough. Isamu thought it might be nice to get to know her a little better.

But as a partner for Puckmon….Isamu frowned, imagining that Puckmon would be too rough for Kaiyo too, and scare her away.

“You know what? Never mind. Just Aki and Masato.” He said.

“Okay. Aki is the blond kid with glasses, right?” Ju asked, getting a nod in response, “Yeah, I agree, that boy wouldn’t survive Taming a Digimon like Puckmon.”

“And I don’t think any of us would survive Masato trying to tame him.” Isamu added, writing his name in the dust.

“But just meeting him doesn’t mean they’ll be partners.” Ju reminded him, “I think it’s worth a shot as an icebreaker to finding Puckmon a partner. Do you think you can call Masato and get him to meet us up here to at least talk to him?”

“I can try,” Isamu got out his phone and started to dial for Masato when Ju suddenly grabbed his hand. That was when he, too, noticed how quiet it had become “Where are the Digimon!?”

Outside, Puckmon was leading the small band back toward the main trail, “We shouldn’t be up here,” Cannismon said, “Someone could see us.”

Puckmon put on an over dramatic look of surprise, “She speaks! And here I thought your sister was so gabby to make up for you not talking!”

“Hey!” Leptomon cut in, “I don’t talk that much!”

Wemicmon pushed his way toward the front of the line, “Cannismon is right, though, if we get too close to the main trail, humans could see us.”

“Pfff. what are they gonna do? Let ‘em see us!” Puckmon waved his hand dismissively, “Those kids of yours have you trained really well, don’t they? Got you operating in secret and everything. Do they dress you up in cute little ribbons too?”

Wemicmon’s face flushed and he raised his fists, “That’s not what being partners means!”

“I like the ribbons Ju sometimes ties to my collar.” Leptomon said, Cannismon gave an approving nod as well. Neither of them were helping Wemicmon’s case.

“Ah, I see.” Puckmon taunted, “So because humans can make you evolve you think it’s fine to play their little dancing monkey routine, that about right?” He sneered

The cat-like Digimon bristled, “No! It’s about more than that! The bond between me and Isamu is special! So is Cannismon and Leptomon’s bond to Ju! They’re special in different ways, unique ways that’s why we can’t be partnered to anyone else! Why Ju and Isamu can’t have different Digimon!”

Something about that last statement seemed to strike a nerve with Puckmon, he visibly flinched, “You really believe that load? You better get that thought out of your head before you get hurt, dork-o.” He said putting his hands behind his head, “Humans and Digimon are exactly alike in one manner: both of them come and go at their own convenience, there’s nothing special about it at all.”

“That’s not true-” Wemicmon started to object when Puckmon silenced him by putting a hand over his mouth.

The other Digimon smirked, “Listen.” He said, and they all went quiet for a moment before they heard the distinct sound of laughter coming from up the hill. “Some of your precious humans are up there. Sounds like a picnic. Anyone up for lunch?”

Wemicmon crossed his arms, “You mean stealing it from them? Absolutely not!”

“No.” Cannismon said flat out, “We’ll get caught.”

Leptomon sat down beside her sister, and ignored her growling stomach to add “Ju packed a picnic for us anyway.”

Puckmon seemed surprised that none of them were on board with his plan to raid the picnic area, “Suit yourselves.” He said and before they could stop him, took off toward the humans, “Jinx Shot!”

Black crystals appeared in the air and Puckmon kicked them down on to the unsuspecting picnickers. There were three tables of them, with packages and balloon’s reading ‘Happy Birthday’, some of the adults were hit, but mostly the crystals just disrupted the tables and sent food flying. Children screamed and the adults ushered them to get up.

“Hey, stop that! What do you think you’re doing!?” Wemicmon shouted, and leaped after Puckmon. His whole body glowed with his forthcoming attack “Lynx Flash!” The energetic image of a large cat shot out from his chest and knocked Puckmon out of the air. On the ground, Cannismon and Leptomon rushed him.

“Moon Surge!”

“Sun Bash!”

“Monsters!” A child began to cry, and the adults started to evacuate them from the area while the Digimon fought.

“Ugh, you brats are ruining everything!” Puckmon shouted, snapping his fingers and entrapping Leptomon in his ring of gems, “Lurid Crystals!”

Leptomon whimpered when she was hit and that seemed to enrage Cannismon, “No, you’re the one ruining everything!”

At that point, Ju and Isamu had heard the commotion and finally arrived. They noticed the abandoned picnic area immediately, “Oh, no. Someone had to have seen them!” Isamu said and reached for his D-Gauntlet, hoping he had memorized how to put up a Digital Construct.

“Obviously.” Ju said, also raising her D-Gauntlet, but she began the sequence for Data Conversion instead, “Cannismon! Leptomon, we need to get out of here!” She said, and her Digimon turned to her obediently she scanned them into her D-Gauntlet.

“What are you doing?” Isamu asked.

“Those people are going to go straight to the park ranger and if he finds the Digimon he’s probably going to shoot them.” She said, “We need to retreat , there’s no time for a fight. Get Wemicmon converted now.”

Isamu felt terrible about not letting his partner continue the battle, but the thought of having Wemicmon get shot and reported as a monster made him sick to his stomach and he tapped in the sequence. “Wemicmon! Sorry buddy!”

“Hey- what are you!?” Wemicmon froze mid sentence when the scanning process began.

Ju finished converting Cannismon and Leptomon and raised her D-Gauntlet to Puckmon, “Your turn.” She said.

The remaining Digimon jumped out of the way of he scanning beam, “Nuh-uh! You’re not putting me in some over glorified watch!” He said, and ran back down through the trees, “Tamers are so stupid!  Ending a fight when it was just getting good! This is why I’m better off alone!”

Isamu started to run after him, but Ju called him back, “Let him go, we should get out of here before someone comes and starts asking us questions.” She said.

“What about the cabin?” Isamu asked, “It was such a great spot.”

“If Puckmon is smart- which I doubt, he’ll know it’s not safe to go back to it while people are looking for monsters in the forest, and neither should we.” Ju said, and shook her head sadly, “You and I can hang out there to make sure stray Digimon know that’s our spot, but our partners might need to hide out in the Network for a week or so while the heat blows over. C’mon. Let’s get back to my apartment so we can redigitize them. Digimon can’t stay as scan data for very long.”

Isamu pouted and looked back into the woods, as much trouble as Puckmon had caused, he did hope that the little Digimon would be alright. He had a feeling that they were going to be seeing him again, and maybe next time they’d be able to send him back to the Digital World…

Back in America, Liv woke up suddenly. It was still pitch black out, but dawn couldn’t be far away. She shivered and pulled her blankets up, but had no idea what had woken her up. Her insomnia was getting worse, so Liv knew she wouldn’t be falling back asleep anytime soon.

The girl rolled off her bed and stumbled toward her computer, maybe a few rounds of solitaire would get her bored enough to go back to bed. Her moving around woke her partner.

“Liv?” Scrofamon yawned, “We going on a mission today, or is it back to the Coliseum again? I’m fine either way.” The orange haired boar snorted.

Liv shook her head, “Scrofamon it’s the middle of the night, we’re not going anywhere.” She said, starting up her laptop. “I’m just a little restless so I’m going to put on a game.”

“Oh, okay…” Liv wasn’t sure that Scrofamon really heard her reply, he already seemed to have fallen right back to sleep. She smiled softly in the darkness, sometimes she really envied him.

The computer turned on fully and by instinct Liv opened up the internet, remembering the e-mail from Andromon she’d gotten earlier, Liv shrugged and decided maybe now she should actually read it…Maybe this time she’d go out like she used to…

All plans stopped when she saw a new e-mail waiting in her inbox. Her blood froze with excitement and dread. The sender was listed only as Gray. The Legendary Tamer Gray, e-mailing her? Under any other Circumstance Liv would have been beyond thrilled, but the subject line of the e-mail made her heart pound.

Selecting the right venue space and location is one of the most important event planning decisions that is critical to the success of your event.  Once you identify the main purpose and type of event you are having, be sure to cover all important considerations when evaluating a venue during a site visit.  Do your homework by gathering the following essential information to avoid mishaps and unpleasant surprises.

Questions to Ask During an Event Venue Site Visit

1)  What is the maximum capacity and is it all available during my event? Any venue on your evaluation list is probably already screened for offering adequate capacity, just be sure that you are aware of any capacity restrictions during your show.  It’s always good  as part of your event planning, to confirm that you’ll have the site to yourself rather than sharing space with another party. If you’ll be sharing space, you need to know how your guests will enter and move about your space. If you are limited to using a shared entrance, this may hinder your ability to place signs and directions to your registration space.  Sharing space may also limit your ability for increased brand awareness.  Know the rules for printed signage and how attendees will be directed and move about during your show. Evaluating capacity also includes safety considerations.  Know the fire and safety plan for your space, if there is on-site security and the location of the closest hospital and emergency first responders. 2)  What is the available parking? While this also seems like an obvious consideration, some venues have different parking rules on different days. Is there a parking lot attached or nearby?  This is one of the best scenarios but not always available.  If there is a parking garage available, are there different daily rates on the weekend? Special rates for events? Are there adequate disabled parking spaces available?  Check out discounts available from Uber and Lyft for event transportation.  Most ride sharing services will work with you on a discount and you can even create a specific promo code for guests to use just for your event.  Convenient parking, transportation or door to door service is a big plus for your attendees.  3)  Is the venue expecting any changes or remodeling? If you contact a venue that you have experience with in the past, make sure that it is the same as you remember it.  Also ask if there are any plans for updating or remodeling the space.  This can be an easy question to forget about, although is extremely important as many venue sites are continually upgrading and improving amenities. If a venue has moved or changed the type of rigging points, for example, this can be a show stopping alteration if you are not made aware of this until the day of setup.  It’s even happened that venues updated their space without updating blueprints or CAD files. Asking when the last upgrade to your space was may draw out helpful information.  Be sure to confirm the type and location of rigging points and electrical outlets.   4)  What are the labor laws for your venue and location? Knowing the labor laws for your site location is a very important consideration, for a pleasant experience as well as budget constraints.  Some venues may require the use of union labor only with specific rules to follow. Regulations may include a mandatory double time rate during early or late hours or different rules for meal breaks. Make sure you know the labor laws ahead of time for proper budgeting without big surprises. 5)  What are all of the on-site amenities and labor services?

People mingle over food and beverages

Keeping your guests happy and satisfied is important to keep their attention.  People like to discuss your event and network with new contacts over good food and drinks. Some venues offer their own kitchen and catering staff or allow you to use your own, sometimes with an upcharge.  It is well worth it to evaluate the food options in advance to be sure you either select a venue with great food or have the option to bring in your own.

Deliver your message loud and clear

Even if the venue offers their own AV services, be sure to talk with an experienced AV services provider to learn all your options with the latest event tech.  Know specifically what equipment is available for your use and what you could bring in yourself.  See if there’s a maintenance person on staff in case something goes out or isn’t working when you need it.  Knowing the AV capabilities of your venue is one of the most important considerations to make sure you deliver your message loud and clear.

RXUK TOP500 Delivery as a service

John Lewis has prioritised making it easy for customers to collect their online orders

In 2020, logistics is firmly centre stage in the customer journey and experience, enough to be flagged up by retailers in their advertising and social media posts. It’s a far remove from when fulfilment was a strictly back-end concern. Today super-convenient delivery, collections and returns promises are powered by strong order and warehouse management and enterprise resource planning systems. The perception is that customers often buy from a given retailer based primarily on the delivery, collections and returns experience. But while leading retailers, including those in the Elite and Leading groups of RXUK Top500 retailers, have developed such services, there’s evidence from this year’s RetailX research that others are choosing to drop the services that may make less economic sense for them. Instead of offering nominated day and time deliveries, many are choosing to offer a standard next-day delivery service, or a choice of next-day collections. Same-day delivery and collections are very much the preserve of a few leading supermarkets and retailers. The others are concentrating on making sure that their delivery promise is both robust and profitable.

Leading the way on delivery

Many of the thousands of products that Argos sells are available elsewhere. That’s why the retailer, ranked Elite in RXUK Top500 research, has focused on competing on convenient delivery times. Its hub-and-spoke logistics model enables it to get products to shoppers as quickly as possible. Shoppers can order online from anywhere – whether that’s using their smartphone or in a digital format store – for delivery as quickly as same-day for orders placed by 6pm. Shoppers appear very willing to pay for such convenience. In its 2018/19 full-year results, parent company Sainsbury’s reported that use of Argos’ £3.95 same-day delivery service had grown by 13% over the year, while the service could deliver to 90% of UK postcodes within four hours.

Amazon has also focused on delivery as it has moved from cutting prices and offering free delivery to a strategy of convenient delivery. The retailer, like Argos, uses local hubs to ensure that stock is so close to customers that it can be delivered to Prime members in as quickly as an hour. Non-members can choose to pay for a range of eight delivery services, or to pick up from a collection point. There’s also free delivery for those spending a minimum amount who are willing to wait for their parcel. Both, however, are in a small minority. In 2020, 5% of Top500 retailers offer same-day delivery, although 61% offer next-day delivery, up from 58% a year earlier.

  Convenient collections

John Lewis was an early leader in offering convenient collections when it took the step of offering collections not only from its own stores but also from those of its sister business Waitrose. It also offers collections through the CollectPlus network.

Argos’ fast collection service is also proving effective. Shoppers can – and do – pick up their orders within minutes of ordering. Same-day collections rose by 10% in its last financial year. In the Dulwich branch of Argos in Sainsbury’s, shoppers can even browse and pay on self-service tablets and collect orders from dedicated pods.

Amazon may not have a UK-wide network of stores but it offers customers a wide variety of collection options, from local collection in third-party stores to thousands of lockers around the UK, in locations from airports to underground stations and other retailers’ stores. Yet Top500 research shows the proportion of retailers offering click and collect has fallen to 54% from 56% in 2019, while only 19% offer next-day collection – down from 26% in 2019.

Delivering the luxury touch

When shoppers are paying more for their goods, they also expect more from delivery. Shoppers in areas including central London can opt for same-day delivery from Net-A-Porter, when ordering by 10am – or same evening delivery, when ordering by 2pm. They can also select their own nominated day for delivery up to seven days. Same-day premier services come with a £12 fee, although shipping is free, at the time of writing, on orders over £200. Other delivery options include next business day, while £5 standard deliveries are delivered within three days. More flexibility is offered through DHL’s on demand delivery service, where shoppers can schedule their deliveries, leave it with a neighbour, or collect from a DHL service point or parcel locker. Customers then have 28 days to return their order; free collection can be booked online. However, the retailer notes that high levels of returns could result in an account being closed.

Upmarket supermarket Waitrose – whose Portishead branch used to deliver ‘to your yacht’ – has more recently piloted in-fridge deliveries, through its While You’re Away delivery scheme. Drivers use smart locks and one-time codes to access customers’ homes where, equipped with shoe covers and body cameras, they deliver to the kitchen, even putting chilled items away in the fridge.

Returns that work

Shoppers at more than 100 retailers can return – and/or collect – their online orders via supermarket Asda and its Asda toyou service. First introduced in 2015, it can now be managed from a phone or from in-store screens, where returns labels can be printed out in store. More third-party collection points have sprung up in recent years, and RetailX research suggests that in 2020, retailers are less likely to accept returns in their own stores; availability has fallen by five percentage points to 43%. At the same time, they are more likely to enable their customers to return an item via a third-party location (+5pp to 25%). Perhaps any retailers that made the switch found it more cost-effective to do so.

Members-only

Many retailers are now reserving the best service for subscribers. Pureplays such as Amazon and grocers Ocado and Tesco have led the way in this. Members of Amazon’s Prime membership scheme can get deliveries in as little as one hour, while shoppers at the supermarkets sign up to delivery pass schemes that enable them to pay once for free deliveries during peak or off-peak times. H&M’s loyalty club members are encouraged to download its app and get free collection plus free delivery on orders worth £20 or more. It’s an approach that has certainly worked well for Amazon. In its 2019 full-year figures, it said that its £79 a year Prime scheme – which comes with a range of benefits – had more than 150m members around the world.

Sustainability matters

Many Top500 online and multichannel retailers are now urgently rethinking the way that they send goods out – from the packaging they use to their transport fleet. Plastic bags are fast being replaced with printed paper bags and compostable wrappers. Amazon has even experimented with doing away with packaging altogether and sticking address labels to product boxes.

Meanwhile, couriers are introducing electric vehicles into their delivery fleets. DPD, for example, has recently taken delivery of what it believes is the largest single UK commercial electric vehicle order to date – 300 electric Nissan vans. That takes its total electric fleet to 450 and it aims to reach 500 by the end of the year.

  DPD chief executive Dwain McDonald said, “These vehicles are changing the way we work. It isn’t just a case of plugging them in and saying, ‘Job done’. We are rethinking and re-engineering how we deliver parcels now and in the future, with different route networks and new types of depots. It is an all-encompassing revolution for our industry and electric, emission-free vehicles are at the heart of that vision. This enables us to say to more and more customers, ‘We’re delivering your parcels emission-free’, which is a key selling point when we are talking to retailers.”

Pivoting to Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

VF was able to take advantage of the existing expertise of Dickies and VF workwear brands, which already manufacture protective gear such as scrubs, lab coats, and disposable coveralls, to help the company pivot quickly to making isolation gowns. Last month, VF and Dickies began producing urgently needed medical gowns for U.S. healthcare workers with the capacity to manufacture 3.4 million gowns by September. Taking Care of VF’s Essential Workers

VF is also taking care of essential workers keeping the company's distribution and manufacturing centers open and running. These associates ensure consumers, medical professionals, first responders and essential workers have the gear they need including scrubs, overalls, and other required apparel. The company is providing up to 14 days of emergency leave pay to distribution center employees in the U.S. and Canada. In other regions, VF continues to provide full compensation to distribution center workers in accordance with local laws.

Distribution centers implemented increased safety protocols and procedures that include mandatory use of face masks, fewer people on each shift, and strict physical distancing at workstations, in common areas and throughout the facilities. Sanitation procedures are more stringent, and associates receive temperature screening before entering the facilities. VF also provided training videos, fliers, and posters with health and safety information.

Factories manufacturing PPE are also practicing high safety standards to protect workers in instances beyond the requirements of local and national guidance. Factories implemented safety protocol and procedures that include strict social distancing in buses transporting workers to and from the factory, in the facility, and common areas such as the cafeteria. Sanitation procedures are more stringent, and workers and visitors receive temperature screening before entering the facilities. VF is committed to supporting essential manufacturing associates financially during the crisis. While its owned factories in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Honduras were closed, associates continued to receive compensation at or above government guidelines. While helping healthcare workers and the COVID-19 response is critically important, VF continues to focus on protecting and supporting the global enterprise and all VF associates.

Canning Cherries with Honey

When someone offers to send you a whole box of freshly picked Bing cherries?

You say yes.

Even if canning cherries will add an extra measure of craziness in between back-to-back trips and 4-H events.

And that’s exactly what happened when Northwest Cherry Growers emailed me and offer to ship me a box of cherries if I’d create a canning recipe featuring them.

I’ve been on a canning kick lately anyway–how could say no?

So I didn’t.

Even though they arrived in the mail the day before I left for Amish Country to visit the Lehman’s Hardware store. And I had a small heart attack trying to figure out how I was going to can them in the middle of packing to leave.

Thankfully, unwashed cherries will last up to two weeks in the fridge (yes, I emailed them to ask).

Crisis adverted.

This time, at least.

Anyway, I’m home from my fabulous trip to Lehman’s (seriously– it’s Homesteader’s Paradise) and what better post-trip project than canning cherries?

(Ironically, I totally missed the fact that Lehman’s has a stellar cherry pitter… If I had thought to grab one while I was there, it would have saved me about two hours of work and a lot of splattered cherry juice in my kitchen…)

These were sweet cherries. And not just the regular kinda mushy, kinda blah sweet cherries I’m accustomed to from the grocery store. These were vibrantly sweet. And I couldn’t bear the thought of smothering them with tons of white sugar, so I decided to use a light honey syrup instead.

(Normally tweaking canning recipes is extremely unsafe and a big no-no. Thankfully, when it comes to sweeteners, you have a bit more leeway in many cases.)

Thankfully, as far as food preservation goes, canning cherries is pretty darn easy. I had it wrapped up early afternoon, even in the midst of post-trip mental fog and unpacking.

Honey canned cherries, y’all. Make ’em. You won’t regret it.

Canning Cherries with Honey

You Will Need:

Yield: 7 quarts

14 to 17 pounds of fresh cherries (roughly 2 pounds of cherries per quart jar)

3 cups honey

10 cups water

Instructions: 

Pit the cherries (see note below).

Place the honey and water in a large saucepan or pot and bring to a boil.

Ladle about 1/2 cup of the honey water into each of the seven quart jars. (Make sure to heat the jars first– I like to do this by simmering them in my canning pot while I’m prepping the other food.)

Place the pitted cherries into hot, waiting jars. Fill the jars to the top with cherries, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. (I lightly tapped the jars on my counter to help the cherries settle and was able to fit more fruit into each jar)

Ladle the hot honey water into the jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace at the top.

Remove the bubbles from the jars, wipe the rims, and affix two-piece lids.

Process quarts** for 25 minutes in a boiling water canner. (Add more time if you are at higher altitude.)

Eat your honey canned cherries straight from the jar, over ice cream or oatmeal, or add to pies and cobblers. They won’t last long!

**You may also can cherries in pint jars. The method is exactly the same and you still process pints for 25 minutes.

Notes about Canning Cherries

The exact amount of the honey syrup you need will vary depending on how tightly you pack your jars

Have a bounty of cherries? This recipe doubles (or quadruples) easily!

Sweetness of cherries varies, so feel free to adjust your honey syrup accordingly. You could also can these in fruit juice– just be sure to boil the juice (just like you do with the honey syrup) before adding it to the jars and proceeding with the rest of the recipe as written.

I love cherries. I hate pitting them. Pitting hacks abound (paper clips, bobby pins, etc…) but my favorite diy cherry pitting method is as follows: Find a glass bottle with a narrow mouth. Remove the stem and set the cherry on top of the bottle mouth. Use a metal straw (like this one) to poke out the pit. It will fall into the bottle, reducing the mess and leaving you with a perfectly pitted cherry. You can also get this Cherry Pitter from Lehmans. It’s inexpensive and I imagine worth every penny. Now, only if I had discovered all these handy-dandy tips before I spent 2 hours pitting the cherries I used for this blog post recipe. Argh.

It’s perfectly fine to leave the pits in when canning cherries. However, as tempted as I was to do that, I decided I didn’t want to have to deal with the pits later, so I opted to pit first.

Canning Cherries with Honey

Ingredients

14 to 17 pounds of fresh cherries (roughly 2 pounds of cherries per quart jar)

3 cups honey

10 cups water

Instructions

Pit the cherries (see note)

Place the honey and water in a large saucepan or pot and bring to a boil.

Ladle about 1/2 cup of the honey water into each of the seven quart jars. (Make sure to heat the jars first– I like to do this by simmering them in my canning pot while I’m prepping the other food.)

Place the pitted cherries into hot, waiting jars. Fill the jars to the top with cherries, leaving 1/2-inch headspace. (I lightly tapped the jars on my counter to help the cherries settle and was able to fit more fruit into each jar)

Ladle the hot honey water into the jars, leaving 1/2-inch headspace at the top.

Remove the bubbles from the jars, wipe the rims, and affix two-piece lids.

Process quarts** for 25 minutes in a boiling water canner. (Add more time if you are at higher altitude.)

Eat your honey canned cherries straight from the jar, over ice cream or oatmeal, or add to pies and cobblers. They won’t last long!

**You may also can cherries in pint jars. The method is exactly the same and you still process pints for 25 minutes.

Notes

The exact amount of the honey syrup you need will vary depending on how tightly you pack your jars

Have a bounty of cherries? This recipe doubles (or quadruples) easily!

Sweetness of cherries varies, so feel free to adjust your honey syrup accordingly. You could also can these in fruit juice– just be sure to boil the juice (just like you do with the honey syrup) before adding it to the jars and proceeding with the rest of the recipe as written.

I love cherries. I hate pitting them. Pitting hacks abound (paper clips, bobby pins, etc…) but my favorite diy cherry pitting method is as follows: Find a glass bottle with a narrow mouth. Remove the stem and set the cherry on top of the bottle mouth. Use a metal straw (like this one) to poke out the pit. It will fall into the bottle, reducing the mess and leaving you with a perfectly pitted cherry. Now, only if I had discovered all these handy-dandy tips before I spent 2 hours pitting the cherries I used for this blog post recipe. Argh.

It’s perfectly fine to leave the pits in when canning cherries. However, as tempted as I was to do that, I decided I didn’t want to have to deal with the pits later, so I opted to pit first.
