"Without Contraries There Is No Progression" turns 10!
It is now ten years (WHOA) (and a couple months) since I published my first fic on Archive of our Own. At the time, I uploaded all eleven chapters over the course of like, an hour, and in the middle of the night, I think, like I was trying to get away with something.
Now, I want to make a post for each chapter, week by week. Because ten years is a lot and should be celebrated.
Without Contraries There Is No Progression is a Pitch Black/Sanderson Mansnoozie (Rise of the Guardians) fic. Total word count: 31,443. Rating: M. At the time, it was the longest story I had ever completed, and it was the first story I'd written that strangers were able to read.
Summary:
He doesn’t know why Sandman comes to him after everything he’s done, after everything that’s happened. He doesn’t know why, but he thinks he doesn’t mind.
(Pitch and Sandy slowly build a relationship; Pitch figures out what he's supposed to be doing and discovers why he hadn't been doing that.)
Click here to be taken to the first chapter.

"He is, don't worry. I'm sure he won't forget her." James reached up and scritched under his chin, running his fingers through the fur covering it. "Santa didn't used to visit me either. But from the stories he's a jolly man, a skilled warrior but with the biggest heart. A protector of children's wonder." He remembered Debbie's stories well, she loved to tell Hannah them.
"He has friends, Queen Toothiana of Punjam Hy Loo, a beautiful mountainous place. She collects the baby teeth that children loose as they grow up, and leaves money in their place. Children's teeth are special, as they hold key special memories of the children they belong to... so she protects them in her temple and she's the Guardian of Memories, the kids call her 'The Tooth Fairy'. Hannah has yet to loose one." James chuckled, tail wagging behind him.
"Then theres Sanderson Mansnoozie, a star. With his stardust he helps children fall asleep, and weaves them good dreams so they may sleep soundly and protects them. He's the guardian of dreams and the kids call him 'The Sandman'."
"Next is the most recent guardian, the guardian of fun. Jack Frost. You might not like him so much, but he brings forth the snow in the winter, giving children days off school with that and playing games like snowball fights and sledding. He's known by his name."
A soft smile crossed his face, still stroking through Alexander's fur, "Then there's Hannah's favourite. The guardian of Hope. E Aster Bunnymund, the Easter Bunny. He hides colourful chocolate eggs all around for children to find and enjoy, hand painted by him and his team in his secret warren deep beneath Austrailia. He's so quick he can get all over the world through his secret tunnels... he was also Rose's favourite, they used to paint and leave him eggs as a thank you. I promised Hannah I'd do it with her this year too."
His smile wavered a little, looking to the fireplace, "But there are darker spirits, born during the dark ages... Pitch Black, the Nightmare King. Born out of necessity as fear kept people safe back then, but as time has gone on he's needed less... and he hates that. He hates the Guardians, and he'll do anything to instill fear again. Debbie says its all part of the belief system. If you believe in them, you can see them. But the less people believe, the weaker they all get... and its as if they don't exist. He's known to kids as 'The Boogeyman' and to older spirits 'The Nightmare King'."
An odd theory, but given how he was now sat in a castle, surrounded by magic and impossible beings... it was hard not to believe beings like the Guardians and Pitch Black would exist.
@xxlordalexanderxx
Alexander was flabbergasted at the prospect of someone willingly living in a cold place, a place constantly cold at least. He’d already figured that Santa would be quite a formidable man to deal with, seeing as he chooses to live in a climate that would render the draconian weak. So the idea that this man coming into his home leaving gifts otherwise, worried him.
“I don’t like the idea of his living conditions, I hope he’s as cordial as you say he is.” He rumbled, flicking his tail irritably.
“For the short amount of time I was a child I never had a santa visit me, I wasn’t a good child. I never was good.” His ears lowered for a moment, a genuine sadness flashing across his features before he perked up as fast as it had come.
“Living conditions aside, I hope he visits and leaves Hannah something, it’s been a hectic year and she deserve nice things.”

I’m gonna infodump about my favorite movie
Rise of the Guardians
It’ll be under the readmore, but TL;DR: Watch Rise of the Guardians and read the books
Rise of the Guardians is a 2012 animated film released by Dreamworks. The story is childhood figures (Santa, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, Sandman, and Jack Frost) trying to defend the children of earth against Pitch Black, (The Boogeyman)
It’s based on a book series called Guardians of Childhood, written by William Joyce. Who, if you don’t know, writes children’s book. Guardians of Childhood is more of a “Young Adult” series compared to his other Guardians books (The Man in the Moon, Sandman: The Story of Sanderson Mansnoozie, and Jack Frost are all part of the series, but they are picture books.)
He’s also written other books you may be familiar with.
The Leaf Men and the Brave Good Bugs and A Day with Wilbur Robinson
Sound familiar?
Maybe you’d recognize them as their movie counterparts, Epic (animated by Blue Sky Studios) and Meet the Robinsons (animated of course by Disney)
Also Rolie Polie Olie, which was a favorite Disney Jr cartoon growing up for me, and was also a book series.
I could honestly go on and on about William Joyce, his work was a part of my childhood a LOT (even credited for working on some of my favorite films like Buddy, Robots, Toy Story, and A Bug’s Life) and that’s probably why I love ROTG so much.
I read all of the Guardians books and own all of them save for Jack Frost and The Art of Rise of the Guardians and the books are not cheap, but what books are? I have HARD COVER BITCHES. Half of them were gifts and I also own the ROTG DVD.
The art in the books (all drawn by William Joyce himself) is really good (this is my favorite art from the books)
And the animation in the movie, as expected from Dreamworks, is beautiful.
You get to see all their unique homes and they’re such varying types of environments. Of course, you have the North Pole, where it’s chaotic and wonderful. Just look at this concept art
And then you have the Tooth Palace, where the Tooth Fairy does her work
It’s very obvious that there are some Indian inspirations in the design because Tooth herself is actually Middle-Eastern (in the books it’s explained in depth more and one of my complaints about the movie is that they whitewashed her even though her concept art in the ending credits shows her with brown skin)
The Warren, where the Easter Bunny paints his eggs
Which is something you never really think about because people only focus on the North pole so seeing so much thought put into it is really nice
We never see where Sandy works/lives (in the MOVIE. But the GAME on the other hand lets you explore EVERYONE’S homes and that’s a whole nother story)
We DO however see Pitch’s lair and
it’s rightfully spooky. When you actually see the scene play out in the lair, you get all confused and don’t know which way is which and it always unsettles me which is GOOD because that’s what it’s SUPPOSED to do
What’s really unique about ROTG is that there’s a source material (and as of now there are eight books (five novels, three picture books) and the series isn’t DONE yet) and instead of turning the books into a movie even though the plot is literally RIGHT THERE, they took the source material and turned it into a prologue. The movie takes place about 300 years after the books do and since the books are supposedly still ongoing, and William Joyce was CONTINUING to write the series while the movie was in production. (Three books have come out since the movie came out.)
I love how challenging that must have been for William to try to include stuff from his previous books in the movie AND to try and link the movie to his newer books despite some continuity errors (also worth noting that he has written a book about Santa and his wife, but Mrs. Claus is YET to be seen or even mentioned in the movie) but I appreciate the effort he put into it and I can’t wait to see what else he’ll come up with.
The characters look a BIT different from their book counterparts
Jack is voiced by Chris Pine and his voice is WAY TOO DEEP and the creators can’t agree on an age for him (book age is 14, but he can age himself up and down to a certain point and some producers said they imagined him 17 or 18) and (imo) I think Jack’s design was pretty lazy (a blue jacket with brown pants) compared to everyone else’s. I mean you have North, who is
BIG
His design is based more on the worldly Father Christmas than the Saint Nick/Santa that we know.
When he’s not in the Pole he’s wearing his big red fur coat and a cossack hat
Because he’s Russian
I’m pretty sure he canonically was raised by bears but that may have just been me imagining it. His book appearance is way different because when we meet him, he’s not Santa yet. So he’s still young
Of course, as the books go on, he looks like Santa
Bunny has the most drastic character change from his book design, as depicted by this fanart (which i couldn’t find a credit for that wasn’t pinterest so if anyone knows please tell me)
And there’s a CANONICAL reason why he looks so different (two actually)
Once they put Hugh Jackman in the role, they wanted a more dry Australian ranger-type design for him, and then the robes got in the way because of how he was moving, even when they changed him to just a lab coat, so they decided to forgo clothes altogether
Fun fact about Bunny. He’s a Pooka, a shapeshifting folklore creature that can turn into either a rabbit, goat, cat, dog, or horse. (or even a human with animal like features) Which actually gives a lot of people the headcanon that Pitch uses the souls of all Bunny’s dead people (yep he’s a sole survivor) as Nightmares
But he’s a different kind of Pooka. He’s an alien technically. And this breed of Pooka CANNOT eat chocolate because it does things to their body. Like giving him six arms. Or making his ears into helicopter propellers.
This is relevant because he uses chocolate in battle multiple times. So the canonical explanation for why Bunny looks so different is that he ate too much chocolate and it permanently changed his body.
Which I love. I could go on about him but all the characters are interesting
Tooth has probably the second most confusing design
She’s based off a hummingbird with dragonfly wings, which aesthetically makes so much sense, but in the books she has regular feather wings. I also don’t like how weird her proportions are. Her feet are tiny nubs, her head is too big for her body (her body is actually pretty nicely designed it’s just every other part of it that bothers me) and I already mentioned the whitewashing
PITCH on the other hand had the biggest glow down compared to the books
He’s just wearing a black robe and, apparently, he doesn’t even have sleeves, which you can’t even really tell because it’s just all smudgy and shit
I mean I guess that’s the point, that he looks like he’s clothed in shadow, but it’s frustrating to look at especially compared to his book design where he’s wearing a FABULOUS coat
Meanwhile Sandy has the PERFECT character design
He’s just ROUND and wears a bathrobe made of sand. Like it’s not even that different from his book design (his hair has more frills than the book version) because it’s such a perfect design and I love how he’s animated. You can’t see it that well because the gif quality, but the sand also sparkles and it just makes it so fun to watch on screen
The movie itself has its share of flaws. (the movie likes to pick and choose the rules it wants to follow about its universe, a huge plothole, and some cheaply constructed arguments between characters that really just make me annoyed because I don’t want to see the easter bunny making a child cry I want to see him get into a fist fight with Santa it’s like you don’t even KNOW your demographic) But I love it and there’s SO MUCH I could talk about. There are characters in the books that weren’t in the movie and there were characters in the movie that weren’t in the books (because they weren’t born yet but IRRELEVANT)
It was a HUGE flop despite critics praising it. Like 8,000 people lost their jobs over it that’s how big a flop it was. But it’s such a dear movie to me and it’s clear that William Joyce holds this series close to his heart (dedicating it and the movie to his late daughter) which makes sense because it’s based on stories he told her when she was young and I’m so honored that he chose to share these stories with us. I just love the series and I should do a re-read at some point

The Power of Belief is a Rise of the Guardians RPG that takes place in 2020. Our site is based upon both the movie and William Joyce's works. It possesses fantasy and panfandom aspects, and it is hosted on Jcink Premium. We are pretty relaxed about activity.
I would love to see some of the movie or book canons on our site. We could really use some, particularly in regards to the rather big name ones as they will become rather key to our plot.
Jack Frost is meant to be the first Guardian. Originally named Nightlight, he found himself heavily transformed after a battle with Pitch Black during the Golden Age. While he managed to protect the Man in the Moon and bring down Pitch, such a victory came at a price. All that Nightlight was fell away and he became lost. He was a boy frozen in time. Thus, Jackson Overland Frost was born.
For those more familiar with the movie, the interpretation we are looking for of Jack is actually incredibly similar to how he is depicted in the movie: Jack would have held a long period of not knowing himself and this fact creates the identity of "Jack Frost," as in his loneliness things like blizzards are often shown to happen. The real difference is that Jack was never human, but originally the protector of the Man in the Moon, thus making him the first Guardian. He was originally named Nightlight and was the reason Pitch not only failed to corrupt the Man in the Moon but is also stuck on earth. He does eventually awaken and during his years of being "lost" he helps the other Guardians as they begin to form.
Depending on your source, Jack is either the Guardian of Fun or the Guardian of Childhood.
Nicholas St. North is a former bandit who later became the figure known as Santa Claus. North is among the first Guardians, having turned away from his ways as a bandit when he came across Santoff Claussen and proved to be the only one among his men who survived the test. North is an ingenious toymaker and a jovial man. He is the Guardian of Wonder.
Queen Toothiana is a the figure known as the Tooth Fairy. She is the last remanant of the Sisters of Flight, having become their queen when they died. She is the Guardian of Memories.
E.Aster Bunnymund is the figure known as the Easter Bunny. He is a Pooka, a philosphical warrior, and the only survivor of his race. Bunnymund is the Guardian of Hope.
Sanderson Mansnoozie is the Sandman. He is meant to have been the first Guardian and is the Guardian of Dreams. He is portrayed as seemingly being Pitch's true enemy and possibly the only individual capable of striking fear within him.
Jamie Bennett is a mortal and the first believer. He is meant to have been the last light, the one believer who did not give up when Pitch was attempting to stamp out the Guardian's belief. Moreover, during the incident in Burgess, he was the one who helped inspire belief and strengthen the Guardians.
As our site takes place in 2020, Jamie should be much older now. How he is portrayed is fairly open to interpretation since he has likely changed over the years.
Emily Jane is a powerful being that is far more well known as Mother Nature. She plays a neutral role within the world. More importantly, as Pitch's daughter, she serves as the one individual capable of keeping him in check.
Ombric Shalazar is a wise and powerful wizard. He is meant to be the last Atlantean. Moreover, Ombric holds a rather big role in the world. He is the founder of Santoff Claussen and teaches the children there. Moreover, he is meant to be Father Time.
Katherine Shalazar is the Guardian of Storytelling. She is known for recording the adventures of the Guardians and telling interesting stories. Moreover, she is meant to have been a fierce nemisis of Pitch.
The Power of Belief accepts many of the canons that can be found within both the books and movies, from any of Jamie's friends to the children within Santoff Claussen. We also accept individuals based off species mentioned or seen within either medium, such as survivors from the constellations Pitch attacked or nightmares. We would love to see anyone take up any of these characters! If you are unfamiliar with the characters, they can be found here.

10/10🌟 Another gorgeous book in this little series. The amazing artwork is so beautiful and really tells so much of the story. The portrayal of Sanderson Mansnoozie in the pictures is magical, and the amazing visuals of the crashed star turning into an island blew my mind. This reshaping of a character that hasn’t always been the kind, magical creature that is shown in this book is truly inspiring. While offering a new look at the Sandman, it also offers a hopeful message for those children who fear the dark. A masterfully illustrated book that tells a modern fairytale. Loved it! https://www.instagram.com/p/B1CgHU8HRpC/?igshid=iti2j8twkrmq

BIOGRAPHY
Kozmotis Pitchiner was once his name. When that was his name, he was a good man, the leader of an army, the hero of a world, a devoted husband and father to a little girl he adored. He really couldn’t have asked for anything more -- until he took a job guarding the planet that held the army of fearlings they had conquered and banished. It was a lonely job and he hated being away from his family, consoling himself with pictures and artifacts from home. The fearlings sensed his weakness, though, and figured out his most vulnerable spots. They imitated his daughter’s voice, in trouble, tricking him into opening the prison to get to her. Ten thousand fearlings possessed him as soon as he did, turning him into the Nightmare King. It twisted who he’d been inside out and broke him. He became unrecognizable, plundering entire planets, leaving behind fear and misery. Children’s fear was the most potent for him. He thrived on their nightmares and turned some of them into fearlings.
He disappeared until the Dark Ages, returning to feed on the fears of children and adults. This time, he became insanely powerful. His power led to the choosing of the Guardians. They replaced his fear with joy, peace, and worst of all, hope. Nobody cared for fear anymore, nobody believed in him, and he lost power. Pitch retreated into the shadows once more. He planned his return, waiting patiently for centuries to make his move, perfecting his nightmares. For a moment, it almost seemed like he was on the verge of victory. His power exploded with all the fear that abounded and the way people stopped believing in the others. He was ready for his strongest comeback yet.
Until just like that, his own nightmares turned on him and he had no choice but to return to lurking in the shadows. For years, he stayed there, biding his time. He knew how to wait. Then the world went dark, but it wasn’t his darkness. He was forced to a new worldand adapted as he always had. He slunk along the shadows of Halloweentown and Olympus, loving the fear and darkness that filled those places. He doesn’t have a job or a place to stay, but he doesn’t sleep either. He still has some of his powers, though slightly weakened. He can shadow travel and feel people’s fears, but he’s lost his dream sand and can’t turn anyone into a fearling -- yet.
Connections:
Hades Drakos: Pitch gets along quite nicely with the God of the Underworld. The two understand each other, understand what it’s like to live in the darkness without even having a choice on the matter. They’re hated for being a villain and nobody realizes it was the heroes that made them villains.
Sanderson Mansnoozie: While all the Guardians are Pitch’s enemies, the Sandman is his true rival. The two come from the same time, the same far away place. In Pitch’s eyes, much of his pain is the fault of Sandy.
ALTERNATE FACECLAIMS: None yet.

New Picture Books - October 2012
Here is a spotlight on some of the new picture books we have at the library for October 2012. All the Awake Animals Are Almost Asleep - By Crescent Dragonwagon and David McPhail (JE DRAGONWAGON) In this lyrical animal ABC book, a mother tries to tuck her child in for the night by telling him about all the awake animals that are getting sleepy. From antlered Antelope to zzz-ing Zebra, this alphabet of animals becomes an exquisite celebration of language and nature, just right for lulling even the most wide-awake little ones into a cozy, soothing slumber. Boot and Shoe - By Marla Frazee (JE FRAZEE) Boot is a back porch kind of dog. Shoe is a front porch kind of dog. What will happen when a squirrel stirs up some trouble and Boot ends up on the front porch and Shoe is at the back porch? A cute story about two dogs who think they have lost each other with a very happy reunion at the end!
The Reader - By Amy Hest and Illustrated by Lauren Castillo (JE HEST) A new reader trudges through deep snow with a mysterious suitcase in tow. He has something important to share with his faithful companion, who bolts ahead to wait at the top of a tall hill. Our small hero climbs higher and higher, until finally, he is there, too. Then he opens his suitcase— click, click—and soon the only sound in the world is the sound of the reader reading their very favorite book to the very last page… the very last word. The Sandman : The Story of Sanderson Mansnoozie - By William Joyce (JE JOYCE) The man in the moon had a problem. Most nights, he beams down at the children of Earth, providing them with an inextinguishable nightlight that keeps nightmares at bay. But what happens when it's foggy or cloudy? When the moon is less than full and bright? Who will keep the children safe at night? He needs a helper! And he's spied just the fellow: a sleepy little guy named Sanderson Mansnoozie ( Sandy for short), who might be perfect...if only the man in the moon could wake him up. Jangles a Big Fish Story - By David Shannon (JE SHANNON) Jangles is the biggest fish anyone has ever seen! Fishing alone at dusk, a boy feels a tug on his line and comes face-to-face with the gigantic trout--whose enormous jaw is covered with so many lures and fish hooks that he jingles and jangles when he swims. Terrified by the sight, the boy is shocked when Jangles befriends him and takes him on an adventure to the bottom of the lake. A surprise ending will leave readers laughing and shaking their heads. What Time Is It? It's Duffy Time! - By Audrey and Don Wood (JE WOOD) Like most pugs, Duffy loves to sleep, and from the time he wakes for breakfast to the time he prepares for bed, Duffy's day is punctuated by delicious naps: the Before Breakfast Nap; the After Breakfast Nap; the Late Morning Nap; and so on. When his best friend, a playful girl, comes home from school, Duffy helps her with her homework, follwed by his Early Evening Nap. These are only a small portion of the new pictures books we have currently. Make sure to check out the full selection in the library, located next to the concept books.

Like all the others, Sandy wasn’t always a Guardian. Once, he was a star-captain. He lassoed the falling stars that people wished upon and steered them on to grant their wishes. But stars aren’t just burning balls of gas up in the galaxy, they are beings with personalities, feelings, complex emotions. To saddle one took incredible skill and courage. Then there came the greatest star he had ever seen. It took him years, but he caught it and the two stayed together for a long while. They explored the universe and granted wishes, discovering new things.
It wasn’t until Pitch came with his host of fearlings that Sandy realized the star he captained was Pitch’s very daughter. Pitch had once been a hero, but now he was twisted and angry and full of fear. A battle sent Sandy and the star hurtling towards earth. The star broke the fall for Sandy, saving his life. They crashed into the ocean and Sandy landed on a desert island where he slept.
He didn’t wake until the moonlight fell upon him in the middle of the dark ages. The Man on the Moon woke him, with a voice Sandy recognized as a child whose wish he had once granted. The Man asked Sandy to become a Guardian of the children of Earth, because Pitch had taken over and fear reigned. Sandy agreed, but fear quickly took him over. He didn’t know how to protect them, he didn’t know what would help. He paced for three days before he fell into a deep sleep and dreamt of how he would help the children.
The next morning, he gathered all the sand on the small island around him and wrapped it around himself. It became enchanted and he used it to transport himself across the ocean to send good dreams to every child in the world with his dream sand. He became the first Guardian, a Guardian of Peace. With every addition to the Guardians, Sandy was delighted. When Pitch first came back, he wasn’t worried. Then everything went wrong and he was trapped in a prison of darkness for days, nearly going mad. But he always had faith that the Guardians would win. And as he expected, they did. And they would continue to do so, no matter how many time Pitch came back.
Then the world started to rot. Everyone suspected Pitch, but Sandy recognized that it wasn’t Pitch’s work, it was something even darker. Forced into a new world, Sandy felt lost. His entire purpose had been to guard peace, give good dreams to everyone. But his powers were significantly weaker, and he could feel that he was nothing more than a myth in the new world. He brought precious little of his dream sand through, but he treasures what he has left.
CONNECTIONS
Emily Jane Pitchiner: She’s grown beyond the star he captained and, while she isn’t exactly the embodiment of peace, she isn’t evil, either. That gives him hope she may one day accept him as a father figure.
Rapunzel Sonne: Though she isn’t one of his students, after a chance run-in, he finds himself drawn to her and wanting to teach her. She’s bright and hopeful, in spite of all he can sense she’s been through. He wants to find a way to help her and guide her, to keep her hope alive as she navigates this crazy world. She’s almost like a chance at the daughter he never had.
