This is now my blog for any Redwall themed tournaments I feel like doing or that anyone else may suggest. Best Villain and Most Tragic Death have been done elsewhere but anything else is fair game.

Match Ups Round 1:
Redwall vs. Eualia Winner: Redwall
Lord Brocktree vs. Marlfox Winner: Marlfox
The Long Patrol vs. Mariel of Redwall Winner: Mariel of Redwall
Rakkety Tam vs. Martin the Warrior Winner: Martin the Warrior

Salamandastron vs. High Rhulain Winner: Salamandastron
Pearls of Lutra vs. Doomwyte Winner: Pearls of Lutra
The Bellmaker vs. Mossflower Winner: Mossflower

Redwall vs. Martin the Warrior vs. Mattimeo Eliminated: Mattimeo
Pearls of Lutra vs. Mossflower vs. The Taggerung Eliminated: Pearls of Lutra
Match Ups Semi-Finals
Contestants have swapped competitors to avoid going against the same book as the previous round.

I'm down to the last fourth of Doomwyte and god this is a slog. These villains are the most incompetent and disappointing ones yet. They start off cool and creepy but they are embarrassingly bad at everything they do, like I'm almost done with the book and the majority of the Redwallers are still not even aware that the birds were trying to intimidate them. And the only reason Dubble, Spingo, and Bisky even know is because Zaran told them!
#I mostly want to finish it so I can move on to Sable Quean which I remember having a grand time with#it's not all bad like some of the Redwall elders are pretty fun#I like the abbot and skipper in this#and zaran's cool she just shows up so late#redwall#doomwyte#bored badgering

Thoughts on The Sable Quean
This is definitely the least interesting of the books I've reread. Not the outright worst (Bellmaker) but I still have all these notes.
Once again, there is a new chapter art style I totally forgot about. I like the shading but the eyes are lifeless on the creatures where it's not meant to be. One of the chapter art is an otter and it reminds me of the style of The Great Redwall Feast picture book that came out in 1996.
The names are very interesting this time around. I like them. Tura, Tassy, and Thwissle should probably all be related being squirrels.
We have a second family of hares who don't talk like the stock types or even fit Salamandastron naming conventions. Knowing that the cartographer in 23 was a hare maiden, hares were really shaping up to be more varied than they had been in literal decades in this series. Ironic that Diggs is the best hare since Florian.
This is also the second recent book (at least off the top of my head) where otters have other roles at Redwall other than warrior , Skipper or fisher or random citizen (Fumbril here and Toran in Loamhedge)
I thought the Flitchaye were tiny squirrels but they're tiny weasles?
As soon as I saw the names of Buckler's brother and sister in law, I realized I had been mistaken the ending of this book for the ending of Eulalia. So I don't remember anything about that book. I've started it again and I remember really liking Maudie, but that's another post.
Is this the first mention of cauliflower?
Does anyone else want to hear The Bellringers Burial?
liars. If I believed ye, I’d finish both of ye right now just t’save any poor beast the misery an’ shame of havin’ the like of you as fathers. Is quite possibly the best drag in any redwall book.
There's more species and social class specific quirks.
The river’ogs are another concept that's rare, but allus welcome. Trajidia is the best.
Chapter 9’s art is the tapestry of Martin. It shows the Late Rose, something I don't remember any other book mentioning, but it's possible I simply missed it. I remember it being a stained glass window but maybe that's a TV thing. I know it's an actual rose on the grounds but it's mentioned rarely after Martin the warrior
This one leans harder into the socialization aspect of fretful females and fighting males than nearly every other book in the series. The only exception is Flib.
though I recall, your voice sounded rather different.” the rest of the scene plays out and confirms; while animals are possessed by Martin, he also changes their voices to his own. Kind of creepy.
I'd rather hear about the adventures of Oakheart and Marjoram as children than the rest of the story.
Forgot that it took 16 books to get a second fighting mole (I consider Arula one) and the first capital Warrior in the series ever.
And 21 books to have a female badger get the prophetic dreams to go to Salamandastron. Also I knew the name Ambrivina but I forgot who had it.
Three animals are killed and it seems to be rushed through by the narrative. Lessens the impact.
This entire concept just has no steam behind it. The children are missing but there's been little to no established outside communities in mossflower in the series so where did these children come from? Are they all orphans?
Some characters are so uninteresting that we’re constantly reminded of their relationship in proximity to the main characters bc they have nothing else. It's very bad regarding Clarinna and Clerun. I will say the scenes with Clarinna and Buckler in the end are very endearing.
Vilaya has a title and a maid but nothing makes her special besides being the third female antagonist and also a sable I guess.

Buckler: “I wouldn’t wish that on my worst enemy” I would. Diggs: “I’m not going to sink to their level” I will, coward. Flib: “I’m the bigger person” I’m barely 5 feet tall. Give me the knife, bitch.

*hums in trying to write a poem about how as a queer Christian I find the cross, a symbol of suffering, being a symbol of Christianity mildly ironic, and thinking about it as a cross for queer people of faith, and how something about that really hits something inside of me that wants a poem or a song, but the words are failing but the hymn that prompted it is playing in my brain*

Redwall Reading Order
Ok! So! When reading the Redwall series by Brian Jacques, there are several ways to do it. The most common are publication order and chronological order.
Here is publication order
Here is chronological order (The chronological list is really comprehensive and even breaks down parts of the books, but if you’re reading for the first time, ignore the parts and just read the books in the order there.)
Personally, I like chronological better because my brain likes timelines, and because while you do see the development of Jacques’ style and world from a writer perspective, the publication order doesn’t make as much sense to me.
HOWEVER if you are just starting the series and don’t know if it’s your thing, I recommend reading the core sections in order, and reading the rest in no particular way!
I would recommend: Martin the Warrior Mossflower Redwall
Then the rest as you see fit. Reading MtW, Mossflower, and Redwall in that order gives you a firm grounding in Redwall lore and the basic idea of the series. Basically, it gives you a lot of the founding knowledge to work with the other books in the series -- after reading those, you can basically read the books in any order* and understand what’s going on!
*There are some exceptions, imo. The Bellmaker is best after you read Mariel of Redwall, andThe Sable Quean comes after Triss (but not in a plot-important way).

Coping with yesterday turned into skipping church, playing hymns on guitar by the duck pond, finding a piano and playing for two hours, then making this. Tis symbolism.

My #1 post of 2022
Guidelines in my faith say not to get tattoos. I’ve been reconsidering some things lately, one of those being the dress and grooming standards, and have been thinking of what tattoos I might get if it became allowed, or if I find it isn’t something I am strongly against.
A broken sword - The sword of Luke the Warrior Redwall was a big part of my childhood. An important symbol in the series is the sword of Martin the Warrior. Forged from the steel of a fallen star on the hilt of the sword of Martin’s father, the blade passes from hand to hand, champion to champion, famous, thought to be magic. Unbreakable. Before Martin’s sword came Luke’s. A sword passed from father to son, used to protect, until it was broken. A sword Martin was willing to fight to reclaim, and whose remnants he carried around his neck until the blade was reforged. Martin’s sword was glorious and famed. Luke’s was unknown. But Martin’s sword was built from it. To me, the broken sword is more impactful. It’s an oath kept, as well as a family connection reframed. It shows even the strong break, and can be rebuilt.
The Lightweaver Symbol My order of Knight Radiant from the Stormlight Archive is Lightweaver. The oaths of the Lightweavers past the first are actually truths that the knight has been hiding from, or similar. Lightweaving itself is about illusions, about stories, about transformation. Truth through illusions is a concept that fascinates me. I often feel a strong connection to masks, costumes, and similar, to exadurate characteristics to show a truth by reframing it. Also, the symbol itself is pretty neat.
Era 1 Allomancy Tin Symbol Believe it or not, this has almost nothing to do with the symbol and a lot to do with the metal Tin itself and the Allomantic powers it has in Mistborn. Tin enhances the senses. Increases sight, strengthens hearing, boosts touch. To the characters in the Mistborn series, Tin often means spying on people, running through mists in the dark, and watching for danger. To me, Tin is reading under the covers with a flashlight with ears pricked so I can hide my light if a parent comes in. It is straining my eyes to see in the dimness of the hall and wishing I could see just a little better to ensure there aren’t snakes hiding there. It is hugging someone and wanting to feel it more. Tin is my past made into magic.
Dragons There is almost no reason for this other than that dragons are incredible and fascinating and beautiful. Dragons are sometimes creatures of fire. They are often creatures of air. There isn’t one ‘true’ kind of dragon. Dragons are one of my fascinations, and one of my most important and developing writing projects is surrounding the descendents of dragons. If I were to get a dragon tattoo, it would be either wings outstretched or curled. When we were playing a Would You Rather card game, my brothers and I asked our mum what tattoos she would pick for us, and she actually suggested a dragon for me.
Talan Runes In one of my writing projects, the magic system requires runes to be written in ink on the users. This can be tattoos, or it could be more like using a pen to draw on yourself. The runes themselves tend to be things that have significance, and what they do exactly depends on the intentions of the user. I am uncertain what runes I would get. Alzu (freedom or flight), monu (vision), sochu (protection), sonu (voice), and zara (knowledge) are all meanings that I would like. It would also be possible to use a combination.
Other Writing Project Elements Such as wings (not feathered), like the protagonist in my second novel attempt hid, until she learned to fly. The swirls made by the spikes of a magic system in one of my major fantasy projects, in geometric patterns. Vines twined into a quote from a character, or simply a quote.
Chances of these being used are debateable. I need to think through the reasoning behind the no-tattoo suggestion and see if it still holds. But these are some ideas of meaningful tattoos I might consider.
