WIP Wednesday (5/22)| Mer Roadtrip AU (Part 18)
After sucking in another deep breath, Nathaniel ducks back down into the murky water out of view. He can’t risk being seen by the humans up on the bridge, not when he’s about to change. The idea of transforming without his mother is nauseating. It was never allowed. And he’s never swam without her.
After her death, he couldn’t bring himself to use her gift. But it’s his only option now. So Nathaniel tucks all his grief into the back of his mind. Then he crosses his ankles and concentrates hard. All at once, gills open on the sides of his neck and his legs start to fuse together, bringing both relief and pain. His knee protests strongly against the transformation, but his tail forms regardless.
It’s a bit stiff. Whether from his injury or disuse, he doesn’t know. What he does know is changing back to human is going to be much, much worse. But Nathaniel will just have to cross that bridge when he comes to it.
The irony of that phrase has him giggling bubbles against his will. At last he comes to his senses— if he has them at all— and wipes the insanity off his face, along with a layer of slime he’d rather not identify. As he shakes the goop off, the appearance of his fingers takes him by surprise. Of course, the reddish-orange webbing between them is familiar but it’s still strange to see after a month without it.

if you dont mind sharing, what are some of your favorite ska songs/bands?
I will admit I am not a huge band person I tend to be more of a "pick whatever random songs sound good" person, so I can't recommend any good bands. I also listen to Ska Punk, which is a subgenre of Ska... and Punk. So I am not a good authority on Ska songs to listen to I am just someone who is banned from being passed the aux cord...
But some of my favorite songs include:
No Children - Ska (cover)
Quinto Patio Ska
Everything Went Numb
S F D D
And songs by Reel Big Fish tbh. I know I just said I don't listen to specific bands but Reel Big Fish has some pretty good songs like...
Sell Out
And their Take on Me cover
Here's my disclaimer, though: I am not into music subcultures I just listen to whatever sounds good (and jazzy punk with horns sounds good), so I could be giving absolutely awful music recommendations that anyone who is especially into Ska (and more specifically Ska Punk) might find egregious. I personally just grab whatever song sounds good and add them to my forever long playlist.
Also the Jabberjaw (Running Underwater) song from Pain used for the Cartoon Network Boomerang Groovies is probably the reason I enjoy Ska punk so much, and it has been in my playlist for years now:
If nothing else in this list interests you, I require everyone by law to listen to Jabberjaw Running Under Water by pain and watch the Cartoon Network Boomerang Groovie video of it. I used to watch Boomerang a million times, and this was probably the only Groovie I really enjoyed watching and didn't go to the bathroom during.

Eight has two Odux mounts whomst he received as gifts from Zakuulan locals on his travels; these two beasts produce milk and cheese, so he regularly makes those products and occasionally sells them to fund his wanderings around the countryside of Wild Space.
That is not their only purpose; given the necessity of a spy to travel abroad without raising suspicion, Eight was tasked with gathering espionage for the Alliance and scouting potential allied villages/difficult-to-reach enclaves while under the guise of an oddjobs nomadic mercenary for hire. Due to the Eternal Empire's aggressive advancement in tech, it was a unanimous decision for him to go with relatively little technology in order to avoid surveillance, save for the occasional radio and report. As a result, Eight spent most of his time living on the back of his animals and caravan-ing to parts most remote while adapting to life on the move.
Being from a semi-nomadic culture himself, Eight took to never staying in one place and gathering reconnaissance from the locals like a fish to water--even building a mobile house-like structure atop his beasts so he could sleep in the saddle while the Odux' were on the move. Lana's mobile Intelligence did come into fruition...though not in the way she expected. No one could deny the efficacy of an operative permanently out in the field however, and it was approved for Eight to carry out his work like so and as he saw fit, becoming one of the most vital pieces of Alliance intelligence due to being largely invisible to a high-tech Empire.

Alright...I can’t resist a good fill-in-the-map demonstrating the result of spending many years being itinerant as a coping mechanism instead of studying the blade/going to therapy/doing something useful/what have you, hah. I feel like the parameters are a little vague though (at least in English, interestingly the Chinese option is slightly more specific). I decided “lived” = “lived for at least one month in a fixed location for a purpose other than traveling/sightseeing”, “stayed” = “stayed at least one night”, “visited” = “visited on a day trip”, “stopped” = “at least stopped to get gas/at a road stop”, and “passed here” = “had a layover/drove through without stopping for gas”. For the record, do I still want to go to all the places I haven’t been (though I’d probably only go to Nebraska just to tick the box, unless someone wants to make a passionate case for it).
