The Bird King, G. Willow Wilson
ID / She knew now what parts of her persisted when the things that didn't matter were stripped away: the embroidered slippers, the quiet routines, the room in which she slept, her few possessions. Those were not her; they formed no integral part of her personality, though they had defined her for so many years. What remained was slight but strong, and what remained, believed. / END ID

Runes In Thistledown
alright, here are all of my notes on runes, completely unedited. just tossing them out there right now since i feel like i need to post more original content. i probably won’t post directly from my notes again, though, since tumblr doesn’t save the formatting.
kind of a mix between sigils and tarot cards, with maybe some actual runes thrown in there? time to research!
there are 32 runes, each with a positive meaning, a negative meaning, a neutral meaning, and a domain. they can be placed in different patterns and then flipped over to give a new meaning.
they’re usually used for divination and to bring a certain effect to a place. they’re also carved on wooden discs where readings are done as a form of currency.
every rune has a dot above it. if the dot is above the rune, then the meaning is positive. if it’s below, then the meaning is negative. if it’s to either side, it’s a neutral meaning.
the domain is the overall theme.
there’s a lot of debate over whether they can be called the positive meaning, the neutral meaning, or the negative meaning. some say that they should be called the beginning, middle, and end. some say they should be the left, the middle, and the right. future, present, and past are also debated. most people have one they interpret it as, but some switch between interpretations.
in my notes, for the most part, they’ll be called the first slot, the second slot, and the third slot.
bone and breath, for one reason or another, are rarely pulled. they’re seen as the most powerful runes, and it’s customary to pull a second one out if you pull either of them. if you pull both, then no matter which meaning you get, it’s said that the gods are watching you and are waiting for what you do next.
runes in order, with bonus commentary on why i chose everything.
Number - Name - Positive Meaning - Neutral Meaning - Negative Meaning - Domain
1 - Bone - Stability - Centre Of Structure - Instability - Structure
Bones kind of hold you up and support you, people refer to the core of something as its bones… That was kind of my thought process.Stability is always a good thing, so that went to slot one. Slot two is kind of like the heart of a tree trunk, or the centre of the bone, or something like that. I’m not quite sure how to explain it.
2 - Silver - Wealth - Financial Support - Greed - Economy
3 - Dusk - Welcome End - Neutral End - Unwelcome End - Endings
4 - Dawn - Welcome Beginning - Neutral Beginning - Unwelcome Beginning - Beginnings
5 - Death - Positive Change - Neutral Change - Negative Change - Change
I haven’t done too much research on tarot cards, but from what I do know, the death card has more to do with change than actual death, and I figured that it was a nice change from other things.
6 - Treasure - Nonmaterial Gifts - Material Gifts - Loss Of Belongings - Belongings
This one and ‘Silver’ were kind of similar, but I figured that coins are used more to represent wealth and the economy, and treasure chests and treasuries were more associated with material belongings.
Loss Of Belongings obviously went into the third slot, as people don’t generally take well to losing their stuff and would consider it to be negative.
Gifts are a more positive thing, so I decided to put that into the first and second slots.
Now, people in our society generally see nonmaterial things like hope, friendship, and happiness to be more important than nonmaterial things, so nonmaterial gifts went into the first slot. In universe, people probably have a more open interpretation of ‘Nonmaterial Gifts’ and may interpret it as things like favours or general affection as well. The God Of Runes, however, meant things more like the aforementioned hope, friendship, and happiness.
The second slot went to ‘Material Gifts’. It’s more of a neutral thing. People typically appreciate nonmaterial gifts, people typically don’t appreciate losing their belongings, but material gifts are more of a case by case basis. You like some, you don’t like others. This gave it the second/neutral slot.
7 - Candle - New Things Through Chaos - Chaos As A Concept - Loss Through Chaos - Chaos
Candles were chosen for chaos due to the uncertain nature of their flames. How long they will burn for, how high they will burn, how brightly they will burn. This is all hard, if not impossible, to predict. Chaos, by nature, is impossible to predict.
Some people find it hard to find good things through chaos, some people find it hard to find bad things through chaos. This is more of a YMMV, so I went with typically positive and typically negative things. Gain and loss. Chaos itself, with people’s divided opinion on it, went into the second slot.
8 - Twine - A Deep Friendship - Brief Interactions With Strangers - Broken Bonds - What Ties You To Others
No deep meaning here, I just thought of how twine connects things or wraps things together, and I figured that I could use it as a metaphor for what binds people to each other.
Deep, long lasting friendships full of trust? Usually seen as good things. So bam, slot one done.
The loss of said deep, long lasting friendship that was previously full of trust? Usually seen as a bad thing. Bam, third slot done.
Truth be told, the second slot is kinda ‘eh’ for me. Nothing really ties you to strangers other than brief interactions or familiarity with them. But hey, a bond’s a bond, so it earned second slot.
9 - Rag - Extreme Trust In Others - Awkwardness Between People - Isolation And Distrust - Touch And Trust
I thought of ‘Rag’ as a rune name first, and later, I thought of ‘Touch And Trust’ as a domain. I didn’t have many names without domains, and I didn’t want to add any more, so I figured out a way to connect rags to trust. This caused me to think of the rag exchange tradition. A few towns have a tradition where people will exchange rags or pieces of cloth to show extreme trust in each other. This is because the person is willing to ruin something of their own just to show affection for the other person.
Touch and Trust go well together since you don’t really want a stranger touching you, and you, or at least I, prefer to have people ask before touching.
Coming up with slots for this was easy enough.
10 - Face - First Impressions - A Stranger’s Point Of View - Perception Based On Rumours - How Others Perceive You
People tend to judge each other based on their cover, or rather, on their appearance. It seemed perfect to me that the ‘Face’ rune would have a domain based on perception and first impressions.
11 - Belonging - New Community - Current Community - Old Community - Community
I got ‘Belonging’ from a generator, and my thought process went from belonging to belonging in a community. This works for the towns too, and I figure that people could use the Belonging rune for advice on moving homes or towns. Something like that.
12 - Voice - Justice - Being Of Equal Footing - Abuse Of Power - The Power Exchange Between People
13 - Wind - Travel On Land - Travel Somewhere New - Travel Through Water - Travel
14 - North - Preparation Towards The Future - Eagerness Towards The Present - Fear Of The Future - The Future
15 - East - Providing Aid Via Technology - Spread Of Technology - Loss Of Technology - Technological Advancement
Towns like Iron and Lake are more east, and they tend to have more advanced technology than the towns in the west, though everyone’s at about the same level. I feel like there’s a plot hole here, but I’m not gonna push it too much.
16 - South - Growth From The Past - Ambivalence Towards The Present - Focus On The Past - The Past
17 - West - Discovery Of Magic - Divination - Disbelief In Magic - Magical Advancement
18 - Grow - Plant Growth - Water Levels - Landform Movement - Change In The Natural World
19 - Crowd - Admiration From Others - Individuality In A Crowd - Holding Others On A Pedestal - Self Compared To Others
20 - Partner - Unconditional Love And Support - Support And Partnership - Romantic Abuse - Romantic Relationships
21 - Bead - Taking Care Of Yourself - Apathy Towards Appearance - Focus Solely On Appearance - Vanity
I chose the name ‘Bead’ first, and then I figured vanity since beads are usually on fancy clothing and jewellery and stuff. So nothing too deep here.
22 - Smoke - Simple Illusions - Distractions - Lies - Distraction and Illusion
This comes from the phrase ‘Smoke and Mirrors’. At the least, I think it’s a phrase. I don’t have Internet at the moment to check. It’s also a minor reference to the God Of Smoke And Beauty. Their appearance is different to everyone, which is sort of an illusion, so it fits, somewhat.
Tumblr media
23 - Mask - Great Ambition - Things You Will Become - Unreachable Goals - Goals For Self
This was originally similar to ‘Face’, and I realized that too late. Stubborn as I am, I didn’t want to change the rune name, so I came up with another domain. Maybe it should have been something about lying to yourself, but I thought more along the lines of “the mask is the face you want to have, and what you want to be, so it can represent that.”
24 - Scratch - New Information - Rediscovered Information - Lost Information - Information
25 - Laughter - A Simple But Relaxing Happiness - An Unremarkable Happiness - Finding Joy In Suffering - Finding Joy In Life
26 - Dance - Individuality Via Appearance And Personality - A Mix Of Individuality And Conformity - Conformity Via Appearance And Personality - Self Expression
27 - Shout - Personal Strength - A Definite Result - Cowardice - Confidence
28 - Oil - Creation Of Masterpiece - Creation Of Art - Disappointment In Creation - Creation
I don’t have a lot to say on this other than a generator and cooking oil.
29 - Game - Joy Through Play - Balance Of Time - Procrastination - Joy And Play
30 - Cross - Experimentation - Overlap - Distinction - Objects Interaction With Others
31 - Selfhood - Elation In Self - Self Reflection - Loneliness - Self Identity
32 - Breath - A Sense Of Being Exactly Where You Need To Be - Being Suddenly Aware Of Everything And Everyone Around You - Knowledge Of All Things And All People - The World As A Whole
This originally had another name and domain that I’ve completely forgotten at this point. Point is, it didn’t have the completion and conclusion that I wanted for the runes. I decided that the domain, ‘The World As A Whole’, was a good theme to play around with, and it somewhat connects to the ‘Structure’ theme from the first rune, if you squint a bit. You kind of have to reach for it, but it’s there.
So I played around with a lot of different names. Crown, Gilded, and Prism were a few that I remember.
I wanted to tie it in with ‘Bone’ a bit more, though, and for some reason, ‘Breath’ just seemed to fit. Everything needs structure and bones, if that makes sense, and everything breathes somehow, if that makes sense.
Anyways, the slots for this don’t really follow the positive-neutral-negative thing. They just kind of are.

Note
37, 41, 53
37. Most inspirational quote you’ve ever read orheard that’s still important to you.
Definitely a tough one. Probably one of those ones that says something like: “Even if it’s bad writing, write! You can edit bad writing, you can’t edit an empty page.”
41. How many stories do you work on at one time?
Truthfully? About 20. At any given time there are between 5 and 30 doc files open on my computer and I open them and work on each one as an idea strikes for each fic. Sometimes I might have them all open and only focus on one, if the muse is behaving, but otherwise I often flit between files and post a few hundred words here or there as the ideas come. It’s extremely rare for me to only have one file open and being focused on at one time.
53. What does writing mean to you?
Everything. Writing is my sanity. If I spend too long without writing something, my imagination runs wild and I can’t focus on conversations or tasks. It’s a relief of stress and it makes me feel good when I sink into whichever fictional universe takes my fancy at any given moment. It’s a distraction when I’m bored, an escape when I’ve had a shitty day, a driving urge to create that I MUST fill on a daily basis, even if some days all I manage is a few short paragraphs.
Writing is a way to express all the craziness that bounces around in my head, allowing me to put characters in situations where they say or do things I’ve been pondering over just for the sake of exploring WHY a character or a person might do or say the things they do, or HOW they might react to certain scenarios and problems that they might face.
Writing was the next step for me. As a teen I was a rabid reader who hid from the reality of her own personal problems, ranging from an unhappy and unhealthy relationship with a silly boy, to facing family issues, teenage angst, and all the other frustrating parts of being that age. I read just about every book I could get my hands on as long as there as a good romance tale woven in. And when the books ran out - either as a result of there being limited options on the market (this was before Kindle and ebooks were a thing) or my not being able to afford to buy new ones, I turned to writing.
Suddenly, I didn’t have to wonder what it might be like if an author had written a tale with a few twists that I’d have preferred because I was the one crafting a new tale. I didn’t find fanfic until I was at college, but when I did, that opened up a new field of ways to explore the changes I might make to a favourite series.
I think it’s a universally acknowledged fact by most writers that we all do this as a hobby, but the truth is that, for me, it’s more than that. It’ not JUST a hobby that I dive into as I might jump into knitting or painting - something I do knowing I have a specific result in mind that I will eventually be able to hold up and proudly announce “Look at this thing I created”. Writing is more than that. I mean, yes, there are times when I open a fic and I can’t wait to get to the end, knowing what I’ve got in mind for where the tale will go and how it will look when it’s finally complete.
It’s so much more. Writing is the little things. It’s the diving into a character and playing with them, finding out what makes them tick and watching them react to whatever I throw them into. It’s an expression of all the things I WISH that real life could be - with magic, and wild romance, and cleaning charms that relieve the awkwardness of sex, and that sense of having something to work toward, or a life full of adventure WORTH being written about. I think we all, as humans, crave a life that is full of fanciful events someone would note down in a tale that becomes a legend, but the truth is that real life often falls short.
With writing, there are whole worlds that are unexplored, where the maps aren’t all filled in, and dragons roam, and faeries carry people away to lands of magic and lives full of adventure where the Hero alone can save the world. It’s a flight of fancy; a step away from the reality of bills and a job you hate and the sad fact that not everyone gets a epic love-story worthy of poem and song. It’s escapism and it’s imagination and it’s happiness. It’s a place where there is still magic to be had, rather than the cold, hard facts of a reality where there aren’t any unexplored parts of the map, and everyone already knows everything. It’s an escape from the idea that your soul-mate is probably screwing someone else because you met him, but he was wearing something repugnant to you, or you didn’t want to be seen with him because he was a weirdo, or he fumbled the introduction on the bus while you had your headphones in listening to sad love songs about how lonely you’ll always be.
But by the same token, writing can also be frustration when the words don’t flow or the plunny drops dead mid-way through. It can be anger when everyone interrupts because “Fanfiction is stupid, anyway”, and “Writing isn’t a real job” and “We have to go to this event you’ll hate where you won’t want to talk to anyone and will be miserable all night but you haven’t left the house and seen these people in months, so we’re going, get up!”. It can be hurt feelings when the thing you’ve poured effort into is tentatively shared with the world and readers shit all over it or bitch that there should be “MORE! NOW!” Even after you’ve sacrificed sleep, a function, family-time, or even a meal, for the sake of giving them what you just shared.
It can be sadness when you re-read the story and you find yourself wondering why you bothered because surely it’s rubbish and no one will like it and “Dear Merlin! You’re not actually going to share that with the world, right?” It can be self-doubt and anxiety and fear. It can be happiness when you overcome those things and share to a positive reaction. It can be heartbreak when you value the opinion of a few over the opinion of others, and their opinion isn’t favourable. Writing can be lessons in humility, or a confidence boost, or a discovery of what is, or is not, considered “decent”.
Writing is a means of creating a place where the good guy gets the girl, good conquers evil, the bad boy can be changed for just you alone, and people who do bad things can earn forgiveness and redemption because they’re not psychos, they just wanted out but did what they had to do. It’s a place where all the bad things of the world can be thought about, explored, executed and explained in ways that makes sense based on your world view. It can be a means of educating others about things they might not have understood because the media or the world of RL paints it with brushes of dismissiveness and derision.
Writing is a tool. It’s one I use every day. Writing is the embodiment of the imagination that would otherwise surely land those of us practicing the craft in an asylum for the mentally unhinged or the criminally insane. It’s also a connection. Through writing, and reading by extension, we as a society of individuals can bond over a common emotion, a common character, an adored idea or just the acknowledgement that the terrible thing we lived through isn’t actually as uncommon as we believed.
Writing is....everything.

CR Features Argues About Best Girl of 2018
*Anime Awards voting starts this Friday and WE'RE SUPER EXCITED! However we have gotten so loud with our individual opinions on who we think should win that we’ve been told to duke it out via written words instead of continually disrupting our coworkers (sorry fam).
We’ll hit each category by the time we hit the evening of Anime Awards! Today’s piece gets down to the nitty gritty of Best Protagonist, Best Antagonist, Best Boy, and Best Girl. *Let’s down to business!
  Best Protagonist
Retsuko of Aggretsuko
The lady red panda’s life is starkly relatable in some way to everyone. She stresses the necessity of staying true to oneself and taking care of said self by any means necessary. Whether it’s with death metal in a karaoke bar or yoga with the girls despite being an awkward human, decompressing is highly important and she shows that through example.
-Ricky Soberano
Sakata Gintoki of Gintama
Who better to lead the charge than everyone’s favorite lazy-ass, strawberry-milk-loving samurai? Even with war tearing Edo apart, Gintoki has stayed the same lovable jerk--he may have to grit his teeth a little more, he may have to take a harsher beating, but he’s still the same idiot we all cheer for, even when he’s being total slothful garbage.
-Nate Ming
  Saichi Sugimoto of Golden Kamuy
Sugimoto is a breath of fresh air for protagonists; he’s vulnerable, but strong, determined, funny, and absolutely devoted to helping other people. I thought he would be a ruthless killer at first, and while he can be, Sugimoto’s relationship with Asirpa has really changed him as their journey went on. Watching Sugimoto change from the somewhat lost and aimless “I just need money” to “I am going to help you, Asirpa” has been amazing, and Sugimoto’s strong personality that grows and develops over time is one of the reasons that hooked me into Golden Kamuy, so him being my pick is a no-brainer!
-Nicole Mejias
Chise Hatori of The Ancient Magus’ Bride
In a year full of super powered heroes with abilities that could level mountains, my favorite protagonist is a bit more modest in her abilities. Chise Hatori does possess powerful magical abilities, but it’s something else that sets her apart--her empathy. All of the outlandish abilities in the world wouldn’t have helped her in her journey if she wasn’t able to feel the experiences of those around her so deeply. The Ancient Magus’ Bride told the story of Chise slowly learning to love herself, and it was only through her ability to love others that this was made possible. And that, for my money, is the most heroic character arc of 2018.
-Cayla Coats
Shirase Kobuchizawa of A Place Further Than The Universe
youtube
Although starring an ensemble cast, it’s hard for me to think of any of the girls in A Place Further than the Universe as a lead besides Shirase. She’s the reason the girls end up on the expedition and, although they all tag along to experience their own self discoveries, it’s Shirase’s story about getting closure. Her shy personality that gets subsumed by stubborn determination in the face of doubters is extremely relatable.
-Peter Fobian
Best Antagonist
Vetto of Black Clover
Vetto was the most infuriating opponent that came out of the Eye of the Midnight Sun. He was a monstrously murderous sadist that made every person surpass their limits but not before making sure everyone experienced a personalized version of despair. The slam to Kahono’s throat was what solidified the anger that still makes my blood boil.
-Ricky Soberano
Lt. Tokushirou Tsurumi of Golden Kamuy
Tsurumi’s not someone you love to hate, which is strange for someone who is arguably Golden Kamuy’s deadliest and most important antagonist. In fact, we all kinda like him, warts and all, which makes him that much more memorable… and that much scarier when he shows us what he’s capable of.
-Nate Ming
Viruses, Parasites, Bacteria and Cancer Cells of Cells At Work
Cells at Work was a charming and amazing show that I really learned a lot from in terms of how the body works in terms of fighting off disease and infection, but a large part of that was the unique ways that the show depicted all of those threats. Each one felt wholly unique and easily identifiable, given traits that fit their natural actions and behaviors, and it made me realize that there are some amazing battles going on inside of my body every day!
-Nicole Mejias
Joseph Cartaphilus of The Ancient Magus’ Bride
My protagonist and antagonist picks are sort of a 2-for-1 deal. Joseph is by far the scariest, most cruel presence in his series, but he is also the most tragic. Condemned to an eternity of suffering because of some misplaced kindness, simply existing for Joseph is unimaginably painful. He exists as a darker version of the traumatized Chise, someone who was transformed into a monster through immense suffering. The conclusion of the series resolves not in a fight to the death, but a surprising moment of tender kindness from Chise--making Joseph the perfect counterpoint to our heroine.
-Cayla Coats
Ladros of Black Clover
youtube
The best villains are always the ones with personality and Ladros has an excess. The magically deranged general of the Diamond kingdom made a huge impact in just a few episodes with his unexpected reactions and schoolyard bullying tactics with a huge voice performance from Takeshi Kusao. Within half an episode I went from thinking he was a jobber to falling in love when he screamed “MILLION LASER!”
-Peter Fobian
Best Boy
Goblin Slayer of Goblin Slayer
Say whatever you want about the single tracked mind of the slayer of goblins: He’s motivated, supremely focused, and skilled. His mission in life to kill beings that not only rape and murder women but utilize women as playthings is admirable and justified. He provides comfort to goblin survivors and we may not know what his face looks like but we know what practically everything else looks like and I’ll take that.
-Ricky Soberano
Honda-san of Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san
Retail is a special kind of hell, staffed by a special, hard-as-nails kind of people. Honda-san is a refreshing retail lead in that he doesn’t hate his job--in fact, he loves it! By loving his customers and wanting to help them find the same joy in books that he does, Honda reminds me of the best parts of working in a bookstore… and a handful of the worst when everything’s on fire.
-Nate Ming
Gobta of That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime
Okay, so hear me out here. Despite his appearance that didn’t even change when he was given his name, this little goblin seems to be indestructible! Strung up upside down and forgotten in prison? No problem, just summon a tempest wolf and rejoin your party. Be subjected to poisonous cooking? Dude gained the Poison Resist skill to survive, which earns the envy of Rimuru! To add to this, Ranga has unending faith in Gobta due to his quick-witted battling abilities. Gobta is certainly an irreplaceable asset to Rimuru’s group, so don’t make the mistake of underestimating him!
-Nicole Mejias
All Might of My Hero Academia
Deku’s great, but the end of the first cour of My Hero Academia Season 3, All Might absolutely stole the Best Boy throne from him. All Might threw himself into danger in order to protect the world and his body was left permanently stuck in his withered form. This was powerful stuff, but what sealed the deal for me was the beach scene pictured above--All Might punches Deku for his recklessness and then embraces him, dedicating himself to training and raising the young hero into someone truly amazing. He’s just SO GOOD.
-Cayla Coats
Rei Kiriyama of March comes in like a lion
I’ll say it again. Every year we get a March comes in like a lion, Rei Kiriyama is automatically best boy. He’s just a nice kid trying to get by despite some pretty unfortunate circumstances. He’s kind, thoughtful, and the way he experiences the world around him hints at an artistic mind that might never get the chance to express itself. He’s compassionate even to those who are cruel and preoccupies himself with finding ways to pay back the generosity he’s been offered. Rei Kiriyama for president.
-Peter Fobian
Best Girl
Mai Sakurajima of Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
Mai-san isn’t just a gorgeous, intelligent bunny girl senpai that works as a beloved actress. She also keeps her rascal, Sakuta, in check. Not only that, she’s incredibly mature, understanding, and trusting despite Sakuta’s life being constantly thrown in a loop by cute girls to the point that she didn’t object to Sakuta dating another girl. She makes Sakuta work for it but she can also be shy under that poker face.
-Ricky Soberano
Hina Kawamoto of March comes in like a lion
Probably the most criminally underwatched show this year, March comes in like a lion went right for the throat with an intense story arc dealing with bullying at Hina’s middle school. The complicit cowardice of Hina’s teacher and the professional frustration of her substitute teacher play against the casual callousness of the bully and Hina’s undying fire. She did absolutely nothing wrong--and if she just makes it to graduation, she wins.
-Nate Ming
Asirpa of Golden Kamuy
For me, there’s no argument that Asirpa is the best girl of 2018. She’s equal share protagonist with Sugimoto, but more importantly she’s a BADASS! Hungry? No problem, Asirpa knows how to hunt everything and cook it up. In danger? Her accuracy with a bow knows no equal. Need to track someone? She’s got it covered. There’s always talk about ‘strong female characters,’ and honestly I can’t think of many as good as Asirpa when it comes to anime. Asirpa holds her head tall and stands shoulders above the rest!
-Nicole Mejias
Lily Hoshikawa of ZOMBIE LAND SAGA
Lily is a spot of sunshine in Franchouchou, always beaming with a positive and infectious energy! The zombie idol group is comprised of plenty of eccentric and lovable personas, but Lily struck a rather personal chord with me--we’re both girls that used to be boys. It’s rare to find a trans character in any sort of media, rarer still to find one created with the amount of respect and love that was put into Lily. She’s the shining star of 2018.
-Cayla Coats
Nagisa Aragaki of HANEBADO!
youtube
Nagisa literally stole the show in HANEBADO! Despite the subtitle of “Hanesaki’s play” and the focus on the forlorn badminton player, Nagisa got some great moments as she quietly worked on her own game in the background. The result was a redemption story surpassing that of the main character. Nagisa rose up to defeat the opponent who had previously shut her out so completely she’d almost quit the game. Seeing her triumph was a series-making moment for me.
-Peter Fobian
