Previous anon here I did find a different interpretation on ukai's that's cruel tht Kageyama and Hinata haven't been together since middle school or whatever but that it apparently refers to Suga and Asahi in tht match or especially Suga because ukai is also a setter and the following episodes talk abt infact he is thinking who to make a starter.
Also surprisingly i never find ur blogs in #kagehina
Hi, anon! Glad to see you back.
In regards to the claim, that's completely unsupported by text and also a total reach. Ukai's comment happens early on in ch 24.
It's a response to ch 23 is when Hinata got in his head comparing himself to Asahi and Kageyama gave the famous "as long as you're with me, you're invincible" speech.
Now Ukai does talk about the Suga/Kageyama decision in this chapter but it's later on, after the game ends whereas the "cruel" scene is the first two pages, in the middle of a rally. And the other time Ukai's talking about the setter thing is way back in ch 22 after he witnesses kagehina's quick attack for the first time and compares the two setters. There's too much distance between the "cruel" line and either of those instances for it to be a direct connection. It's very clearly a comment on the glimpse that Ukai just got, of Kageyama and Hinata's relationship.
In the anime, all of this takes place during ep 10. Around 5:30-7:00 is when Ukai starts to compare Suga and Kageyama's styles and strengths. The rally continues and approximately 10:30- 16:15 is where the kagehina argument/"as long as you're with me, you're invincible" shtick takes place. Like 5 seconds after they reconcile is when Ukai makes his comment. The exact lines are
Ukai: "About those two.." Takeda: "Do you mean Hinata and Kageyama?" Ukai: "Are they from the same junior high? Or the same grade school?" Takeda: "Huh? Not at all. Those two only just met. It was a real mess at first because they didn't get along. Pause Takeda: "Ukai?" Ukai: "That's cruel. "
I think in the anime, there's even less room there to ever possibly come to the conclusion that this has anything to do with Suga or Asahi, considering there's frames of Hinata and Kageyama during this dialogue exchange.
I'd love to see a source on that claim by the way, just out of curiosity lol. And I hope I answered that.
As for the visibility, it's probably a combination of a) my blog was hidden from search engines for a long bit b) i post sporadically and c) only like half my kghn related posts and tag tangents are ever tagged 'kagehina'. However, if you're interested, they'll pretty much all be found by searching my blog for "brotp: someone even better"
#haikyu#meta#asks#my personal interpretation of the line is that it's about potential#cuz like the quick happened and he's like ok so kageyama's a prodigy and hinata's a freak#but their on court spat is different#it's not just about pure volleyball#but it betrays how well they know each other that kageyama is able to pick up exactly what's bothering hinata and effectively address the#issue and also make an almost prophetic assessment of hinata's skills and talents#and the little ukai's seen of kageyama doesn't align with all this#so he's trying to make sense of this outlier in kageyama's behavior and he's like ok so they're close? and know each other well?#you'll note that in the manga translation i used#he corrects himself#he asks about junior high and then says 'no it has to be even earlier- middle school?'#but that line of thought is immediately cut off by takeda#and like that juxtaposition- of being unable to fathom a bond like theirs that hadn't taken years and years and years to form- faced with#the reality that kghn is this way with each other after like knowing each other for a month#i think it makes him struck silent at the thought of their potential#in like a 'wow if they're like this now i wonder what they would've been like if they really had known each other for entire lifetimes'
