Resources for the experienced or aspiring writer.
Tumblr media
There are millions of resources available on the internet. Some of them are brilliant and some will just take up your time with unnecessary spam.
Eight years ago, when I decided I wanted to be an author and proclaimed myself a writer, knowing nothing more than what I learned in high school, I took to the internet and enjoyed the rabbit hole of tips, tricks, and methods.
Sooner other than later, the resources started contradicting each other and confusion happened. Looking back at my first book I wrote, I am glad I never tried publishing it.
So, before anyone falls into the confusion I did, here are some great resources for writing and everything else in between.
ProWritingAid.
The absolute best grammar checker out there. Don’t get me wrong, Grammarly is great, but ProWritingAid is just on another level. The extension offers so much! From core elements like grammar and style to structure, readability and consistency - it’s bound to make your writing concise, easy to read and a dream for your editor to review. It also comes with a bunch of options of writing, from business to creative and more. You can check it out here. An optional extra is an online editor called Hemingway. It helps you cut down sentences, minimize adverb usage and more.
Milanote.
Milanote is a killer app perfect for any writer.
If you ever feel like you’re lost in your story or don’t really know where to collate all your concept art, Pinterest boards into a single place with character descriptions and more, look to Milanote.
You can lay out your story, make sure your story line is still on track, create mood boards and character maps and keep it all in one app. You can even invite contributors and add your research files. When you’re starting out your novel, it’s great, it keeps your kind of on track. Milanote is also free btw, but if you need more boards, it will need a subscription. But they have these referral programs that get you extra boards, so that’s dope. Check Milanote out here.
Lexico
It is extremely important to have a dictionary and thesaurus on hand when you write. There are many free ones, but personally I placed my trust in the Oxford Dictionary. Lexico, therefore, is a great site to use since it is powered by Oxford. It has a great grammar guide if you are not sure about the correct hyphen usage etc. and has an option ongoing into the etymology of a word. Should you happen to have Spanish in your story, it has a handy Spanish dictionary too.
Besides the grammar guide and Spanish Dictionary, Lexico offers the powers of a Thesaurus, and the option to choose between a UK and US dictionary (which is handy if you’re new to writing and your high school English education was atrocious.)
Some books to consult:
I mostly spend my days in bookstores looking for classic literary works that I don’t own and to look at the literary reference isle. On two occasions, I am absolutely amazed by the gems I found. The first one was “The Right Word: A Writer's Toolkit of Grammar, Vocabulary and Literary Terms” by Bloomsbury. This book not only has a grammar toolkit which is helpful to an extent, but the Vocabulary Builder and Glossary of Literary terms are brilliant. They show you commonly misused words and phrases, the difference between synonyms, or similar sounding words, so you do not use the wrong one. It really is a writer’s toolkit. I would recommend looking at it, you can always grow your vocab more!
The second one is “The Poets & Writers Complete Guide to Being a Writer.”
So far, this book is insightful on many accounts. I am currently reading it. It offers so many insightful pieces from how to market yourself to publishing your work traditionally or via self-publishing. Questions, answers, insight and more await you in this book. I will write a full summary as soon as I am done reading my copy.
Finally, do consult the Poets & Writers website, Reedsy, the Writers & Artists website or just speak to fellow writers. Writing is a skill that takes time to hone.
I hope this helps you on your writing journey!
