when i talk abt podcasting as an art form i mostly mean audio dramas, sometimes actual plays, bcos those are what interest me. i am aware that nonfiction podcasts exist, and i can appreciate them as a medium, and i can do analysis of them and what like, works for a broader audience and stuff, bcos i did in fact study journalism before i started studying broader media stuff

but also! i simply am not as interested in nonfiction podcasts as fiction podcasts! and also serial is held up as like such a big important podcast but it failed to capture me bcos i just don't fucking like true crime as a genre.

#algie's podcasting opinions #was reminded that serial exists and that's what ppl who aren't into audio dramas think of as 'podcasting'....#like ugh yeah i can totally discuss the art of nonfiction podcasts #the different types and what works and how to engage ur audience and so on #the points where podcasts intersect with standardized news-ish radio and also where they differ and why #but the majority of nonfiction podcasts just are not fun for me!#some of them are fun-ish but not as fun as audio dramas so like. why would i.#actual play podcasts are in an interesting place between nonfiction and fiction #bcos the STORY is fiction but we also get the 'some friends shoot the shit' aspect #and ALSO there's sometimes discussion of game mechanics #(which ok i DO enjoy just not enough to listen to a podcast focused solely on mechanics #i mean if there weren't audio dramas to listen to game mechanics podcasts would prolly be my thing. anyway.)#so actual plays ARE interesting to me and DO fascinate me as an art form #altho those require less writing and more editing of audio after it's done #so the art of it is different #...i also struggle to listen to the ones where they just. don't edit anything out.#a four hour session in one episode not even edited down? i do not have the attention span most days!#but they can be good when they're rly good #...............anyway. i'm back to Thinking About Podcasting In General i guess
