HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR / The Pianist

Władysław Szpilman was a Polish pianist of Jewish descent who survived the Holocaust. His memoir inspired the film The Pianist (2002) which starred Adrien Brody and directed by Roman Polanski.

Szpilman was a well-known radio personality when Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in 1933. Szpilman and his family lived in an apartment in Warsaw which became part of the ghetto. In 1942, his family were deported to an extermination camp in Poland. A member of the Jewish police recognised Szpilman and pulled him out of a line of people who were being loaded onto a train. Szpilman remained in the ghetto and helped smuggled weapons for the Jewish resistance. He remained in the ghetto as everyone else were discovered by the Nazis in 1943.

In August 1944, Szpilman was hiding inside a building when he was discovered by a German officer, Captain Hosenfeld. The officer didn’t arrest him but instead asked him to play the piano and afterwards showed him a better place to hide. The officer gave him bread and jam and gave him his winter coat.

Szpilman survived the holocaust and continued to work on radio and music. His family all died during the Holocaust and Hosenfeld died inside a Soviet war camp in 1952. Szpilman died in Warsaw, aged 88 in 2000.

there are a lot of bad takes out there on the piano (1993) and i think some of that stems from people wanting a romance plot to be unproblematic and totally free from exploitation and coercion but thats. completely missing the point. ada was never going to have a romance that was not built on a bedrock of exploitation because she was a disabled woman living in the 19th century. but she still wanted sex and romance and took what she could get, because women are human beings with human desires! idk, calling out this movie for romanticizing sexual coercion feels like it comes from the same impulse that leads people to victim-blame women who stay in abusive relationships. the movie does not give baines a pass on his behavior but it also does not blame ada for wanting to be with him anyway.
