Hi, love the blog! I recently got into Kingdom Hearts and I'm going out with the whole shabang. I have a PS4, got 2.8 and preordered the 1.5 + 2.5 remastered. In your opinion, what order should I play the series? I heard Birth By Sleep is a prequel and so is KHUx, so I just want to get the full experience. Thanks!
Oh gosh. Well, KHUX is a currently advancing story, and goes a lot slower than the others. You’ll probably want to come back around and do it last, due to the slow story pacing and the fact it’s no where near done. My opinion on the order to play in would be the in-game chronological. In other words…
2.8′s KHX Back Cover [Movie]
Mobile’s KHUX (Ongoing)
2.5′s Birth by Sleep
2.8′s 0.2 Fragmentary Passage
1.5′s Kingdom Hearts (I)
1.5′s Re:Chain of Memories
1.5′s Days [Movie]*
2.5′s Kingdom Hearts II
2.5′s Re:Coded [Movie]
2.8′s Dream Drop Distance
???
Kingdom Hearts III (whenever it’s released)
For the remakes and the movies…
re:Chain of Memories is a remake from the GBA that is pretty faithful to the original plot-wise. Zexion gets to fight and a few lines are further localized, but that’s pretty much all. Sticking with the 1.5 version is fine.
The Days Movie is… not good. It cuts out important plot points (assumed to be to cast to protagonists in a better light) and isn’t that great to sit through. *I’d suggest buying/emulating the game (for the DS) or watching a playthrough. Yeah, it really is that bad.
The re:Coded Movie is a remake of a remake, but stays pretty faithful to the actual plot of the game. re:Coded (remade for the DS, originally JP-only phones) was, imo, a pretty subpar game, so I wouldn’t bother getting it. (Very puzzle-based and limited “memory” to manage how strong you could be.) The movie cuts out all the crap and is quite enjoyable to watch. Sticking with the 2.5 version is fine.
KHUX itself is a remake of KHX, an flash-based MMO for the browser. After a certain point (after quest 585/555), they split off, with different plots. Browser KHX closed last fall, with a very brutal finale, while Unchained (KHUX) is ongoing. Nomura has called this “ongoing” as “Season 2″ of KHX, but…. still worth noting that you may want to watch the “end” of KHX on youtube, after you get to quest 555 in KHUX.
