Pop Culture 13: Grega (Magi-Nation)
And now we end off this week with another look at a character from Magi-Nation!
I really enjoy doing characters from somewhat obscure media like this since there’s rarely a fully developed and expounded sources for me to dive into, forcing me to be creative with it.
Today’s subject is Grega, the granddaughter of Gorgle, who from my understanding was a powerful leader and pyromancer among the Cald eliwan (those among the eliwan that dwell in the volcanic region of their world.)
Like her grandfather, she is unpredictable in combat, a volatile force of fiery nature. However, while she can be temperamental and prone to outbursts of fury, she also has enough of a level head to be concerned with the consequences of the wanton use of her powers.
Even still, however, only a fool would get on her bad side.
Like my Wench conversion, this build will assume that Grega is an elf, since they seem the most thematically similar to the eliwan people. To represent her being a cald eliwan, I recommend the elemental resistance (fire) alternate racial trait.
As for her class, I figured that since Grega is a cald eliwan, her skillset should reflect a cald deck. Such decks use a lot of dice rolling to determine damage dealt to enemies, as well as ways to sacrifice minions and thematically manipulate local fire. As such, I decided to make her a pyromancer wizard, that is to say, a wizard with the elemental school of fire as her arcane school. Not only does this grant her fire spells that normally aren’t on the wizard list, but also gives her the dancing flame ability, which allows her to reshape nonmagical flames and alter fire spells on the fly, which matches up with the themes behind certain cald spell cards.
Naturally given how magic and summoning works in the world of Magi-Nation, Grega should pick the focus item version of the arcane bond, using a ring as her focus (which will likely become a ring of fire elemental mastery or similar ring of fiery power). Meanwhile, the creative destruction arcane discovery can be good for your survivability as well.
Naturally, as a combination evocation and summoning specialist, you should have feats like spell focus, elemental focus, augmented summoning, and so on, but also things like expanded summon monster to add more fire monsters to your summon list and versatile summon monster to get the fiery simple template for the more basic monsters on the list.
Naturally, Grega should have lots of offensive fire spells, not just the ones that deal pure damage either, but also those that can be used to debuff foes in various ways, such as sticking foes to the floor with obsidian flow. Also make sure to pick up plenty of summoning spells as well, since she does come from a CCG, which labors under the assumption of having plenty of pet fiery monsters. Don’t just limit yourself to summon monster in various levels either. I for one find the elemental bombardment spell a great way to deal damage and summon with the same action, though it does of course deal feedback damage to your summons. Also, consider the final sacrifice spell, since a lot of cald monsters can be sacrificed for various effects, so turning a summon into a walking bomb seems appropriate.
Of the relic cards for the cald deck, the ones that stood out to me the most was the rod of coals and Gorgle’s ring. The former lets the user destroy creatures with low energy (basically hp) instantly, which I could argue for a thematic wand of a deadly necromancy spell. Meanwhile, Gorgle’s ring is an unstable item that can either heavily damage enemy casters or their monsters, or backfire and damage you and all your monsters. I could see this as a unique fiery ring capable of dealing a lot of damage at high risk.
Of course, other builds are possible. You might go with the arcanist class with either school savant or without it, or you might make Grega a fire elemental sorcerer or even bloodrager (which would make the magma armor relic more viable to replicate). Alternatively, if you would really rather focus on the summoning aspect, you could go with pyroclast summoner for a fiery mage that can sacrifice her eidolon to destroy foes in an explosion of fiery death.
Being a pyromancer often does mean both blasting and summoning fire and magma elementals to do your bidding, so this build has lots of use outside of replicating Grega, so have fun with it!
That does it for today, but thank you all for enjoying my entries as you always do! See you next week for more archetypes and options!
