pics from the first readthrough of summer stock
#=)#will roland#summer stock#occurred to me to check if goodspeed musicals has an instagram....lo: behold#think that's gilbert l. bailey ii in the first pic; cast as phil filmore; not a name from the movie but if i had to guess#it's the phil silvers / herb something role of [other funny guy]#i can Guess that's the actor playing margaret wingate in the second pic; a role i can Guess is orville's mom instead of dad#also seem to have replaced the older farm like housekeeper w/just the falburys' dad. sure thing#definitely expect changes like there's room for sure to completely add stuff; ofc to tweak or swap around / remix preexisting stuff#which speaking of; they also helpfully have all the songs they're using on their website which similarly isn't just the film's soundtrack#truly intrigued by everything like let's get that lore; surprise prominence of jimmy armstrong in panic of '29 all over again#which; anytime max friedman wants to update his site to have pics from that production....#and like even just in the film like orville's as or more solid a part as anyone else's (save for the singing & dancing lol)#so w/what they'll shake up around here like Tell Me More....

i feel like you have such great characterization of both billy & coryo, so I'd love to know ur thoughts on what kind of music each of them would listen to? probably in a more modern/current music sense cuz idk what kind of music they listened to in the 1870s or in future panem LOL 💌
ps praying either of them would like the smiths
oh coriolanus snow’s literal theme song is “please please please let me get what i want” are u kiddin me he would love that song so much and relate to it so deeply, especially pre-games coryo. i truly think like. early-mid 2000s poppunk would really do it for him too, like any sort of that type of emo music tbh. for the rest of his playlist for modern!coryo in my head:
tiffany blews by fall out boy
the river by good charlotte
i dont wanna be in love by good charlotte (lol)
the kill by 30 seconds to mars
lying is the most fun a girl can have without taking her clothes off by panic! at the disco
knives and pens by black veil brides
lips like morphine by kill hannah
help me by alkaline trio
exit music (for a film) by radiohead
venus in furs by the velvet underground
for billy i actually think going the country route is a little too on the nose, i think if he was into that it would be more modern but throwback-y stuff like tyler childers and orville peck. but at the same time i think he’s also the type to enjoy anything with a lot of Feeling to it if that makes sense?? some of modern!billy’s playlist in my head:
tattoos by tyler childers
sleep on the floor by the lumineers
wedding song by anais mitchell and justin vernon (specifically this original version and not the hadestown cast version)
hexie mountains by orville peck
talk and work song by hozier (❤️)
moving parts by trixie mattel
she’s got you by patsy cline
the devil wears a suit and tie by colter wall
roses are falling by orville peck
feathered indians by tyler childers
#anon#this was SO FUN TO ANSWER OMG#i love character music and playlists#william h bonney#billy the kid#billy the kid x you#billy the kid x reader#tom blyth#coriolanus snow#coryo#coriolanus snow x reader#coriolanus snow x you

It's Star Trek time, so I watch a lot of Star Trek and write about it. You should too.
Today I saw the question "why does Star Trek: Discovery draw so much fire?"
It's quite easy. It was simply not what people were familiar with, and expected.
The Star Trek Formula™ is rougly: Ensemble Crew finds problem, beams over, solves problem. Next week, next problem. Of course there are strays from the path, but more or less, all Trek followed this.
Discovery doesn't have an ensemble crew. It has a main character and secondary characters. It has less Story of the Week™ and more serial storytelling. Well, this is how much TV stuff is structured today. Less episodes, less filler, more steamlined 8-hour-movies.
Nevermind that Discovery has some where excellent Star Trek moments, the dissapointment over all the changes kicked off a whole landslide of memetic feedback.
Which also fed into that was the casual racism ("why does it have to be a black woman???"), sexism ("why does it have to be a black woman???"), toxic views of emotions ("Burnham cries all the time!!!", which is funny because Ash Tyler cries way more, and I see no internet rambos giving him shit over that), casual fatshaming ("Tilly fat lol").
But I really think that the unprocessed, unreflected dissapointment is the core of it.
Didn't help that the New Klingons™ were somewhat debatable in style. In reality, Disco respects a lot of canon and did their homework. A lot of well done references in there. I could write a list.
What ALSO fed into it is that people simply don't like change. There are old news articles that take aim at TNG because it's simply a new crew. DS9 took a lot of fire (Black captain! Stationary station!), VOY (Woman captain! Janeway doesn't get a love interest!). Don't really know about ENT. Plenty of attacks, always. But back to Disco.
Now enter The Orville. Which gave the fanbase EXACTLY more of the Star Trek Formula™. Crew, problem of the week, ensemble cast. The fans who pit Orville against Disco also generously overlook that Seth McFarlane has his own problems.
So, bottom line: Dissapointment, unfulfilled expectations, The Orville rushing in, and all this in a culture with rising toxicity against progressive ideas.
Of course it's all a matter of taste. You don't have to like Star Trek Discovery. But if you give it a chance, there are some REALLY excellent stories, characters, space ship pr0n, sci-fi elements and other stuff in it. Also, Jett Reno. Just watch it for Jett Reno.

Abandoned months old Jean x Reader draft about an electrician working on set at the Sunnytime Crew Show
Tw: workplace abuse??
---
"Aren't you done with that yet?"
You closed your eyes and inhaled deeply to block out the the shrill voice of your client and current director of the Sunnytime Crew Show, Susie Quentin. You say current because the original creator had taken a backseat to focus more on promoting the series through merchandising and signing off on everything that entails.
Susie was a cutthroat lead writer for a popular drama that was out and independent filmmaker. She took her job very seriously. A little too serious, you thought. There were times she was tolerable but others she was insufferable.
Staff or cast members questioning her were either met with harsh reprimand or a flippant dismissal. It was the same for you, being a freelance electrician, who despite your grievings with the woman, found that you would get a hefty payment when she called you on behalf of the studio - LambsWorks - to work on the set.
You were currently fixing the lights, which were looking too dim according to Susie.
"I said they'd take about fifteen to thirty minutes, Quentin." You said, not taking your eyes off the bulb you were fixing. "You've got to finesse these things..."
"Finesse!" You heard Susie scoff. In that moment you glance down at her.
"You know, I can easily get somebody who can get this done in maybe, five to ten minutes?" The implications of what she said weren't lost on you. And you nearly scoffed yourself. You were one of three electricians in this city, and they did shoddy work with methods that could last maybe a couple of weeks whereas yours could go up to half a year.
In all honesty you weren't that great yourself when starting out, but you quickly learned that if you wanted to get work you were going to have to make yourself irreplaceable. That and using a bit of predatory pricing to drive off competitors. But in all the months you worked with Susie she began to pick up that you didn't really like the "replacement" line. Because even if you were good at your job, Susie was willing to take a risk at getting someone else cheaper to do what she needed.
You frowned deep but decided to speed up the process. It might be a bit rickety by the time you were done, but hell, you wanted to be out right then.
A minute later all the lights were shining brightly on the stage.
You climbed down and looked at Susie, who was smugly satisfied.
"Was that so hard?" She taunted, "Your check will be in the mail."
You bumped shoulders with her as you marched off. At the start of the hallway you saw a couple of the Sunnytime Crew actors, Jean Laurent and Orville Smith. Or better known by their casted monikers - Rory Rainberry and Knackerdan Drizzle. They were still wearing their makeup and costumes, but not their wigs. Jean was having a cigarette.
You'd seen them around when you worked but never formally engaged with them.
You cleared your throat and they both looked at you blankly. You jerk your head, expectant of them to move. They laughed.
"There's an exit around that way." Smith said, pointing a direction you didn't bother looking.
"I'm trying to go through here, it's the quickest way." You replied.
"You're not too good to take a longer walk." Jean said, flippant.
This didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. You really could just walk around. But you'd been decently pissed off by Susie that you took a daring step forward. "Let me get through."
Smith narrowed his eyes at your tone but seemed to hesitate on staying where he was, shifting on his feet a bit. Jean took a drag of his cigarette and blew the smoke in your direction.
With that you shoved past the two of them (but mainly Jean) and marched off to down the hall.

What's your Ianthony Orville Peck song analysis!? And I'd be interested in any other Ianthony song analysis pieces you want to share too!
anon, i love you for enabling me <3
The song I'm obsessing over for them specifically is "How Far Will We Take It" by Orville Peck and Noah Cyrus and the lyrics are so perfect for their time apart and early reunion (beautiful song as well btw, the production is great if anyone wants to listen lol)
This verse feels based in Ian's perspective in the between years. Continuously waking up and showing up to this business that started from this crazy thing he and Anthony both created and shared.
Then the second part where it feels like it speaks to his perseverance of being able to step up with Defy shut down and became president of Smosh. Anthony and other cast continuously mention how it couldn't have survived without Ian leading the ship and by the time Anthony came around again, it was still succeeding with Ian's hard work.
Second verse feels more like Anthony coming back. As much as he loves Smosh as well, what brought him back was his love to create with Ian. It's rooted in their friendship and being able to be with Ian again feels like a major aspect of what Anthony came back for. And also the visual of Ian welcoming him back and closing the door behind him like "you're here and we're in this together for the long haul" as they literally bought a company together (still baffling if I think about it long enough lol)
Also "felt the fire but couldn't see the flames" reads to me like Anthony feeling the anger and sadness of the last years at Smosh but not able to understand his negative emotions were aimed at Defy and not Smosh/Ian until later. Like feeling the pain but not able to identify the real source.
This part of the chorus and the line "I know that you felt the same" though! Even if Ian was more resistant to talk about their feelings during the NYC trip ("cause I've been waiting, don't wanna face it", they both felt things weren't the same and they weren't as close of friends. Neither of them could break through to each other in the state they were in being overworked, unhappy, and not having the chance to grow more as people.
"We're all alone now, how far will we take it?" like they had to have time separate and see how to succeed on their own. And they both did a really good job at it! They were both able to find ways to step up and push themselves as independent creatives without being Ian-and-Anthony. But even then, still not getting the real chance to find someone who could match their energy in their comedy writing and the pure history they have with one another as childhood friends ("No getting used to living without you"). They were still soul tired, even if they were doing well, they still felt the desire to be with each other regardless of a brand or company.
Now this last variation on the chorus kills me cuz it feels like early reunion to the max, I love it!
"I tried to love you" like shipper goggles aside, its very hard for men to be able to express love for their friends and it's clearly still not natural to them but they're trying! The I love you during Anthony's funeral? Clearly a bit awkward to get out but still he said he loved his friend!
"Cause I've been waiting, don't wanna waste it/ We're all alone now how far will we take it?"
This fully reads as them going independent from Mythical after buying back Smosh. They don't want to waste it, they know they want to do this as long as they possibly can and are working so hard for Smosh to succeed together.
They're alone but now they're alone together, Ian and Anthony at the helm of the ship again, now they're seeing how far they can take it :')
#ianthony#platonic or whatever lol#☀️🔍#i love you song-fics ilysm#all my fanfics are based off of songs or song lyrics lol#thank you anon! I was shy cuz I know the fandoms in a little distress rn lol#I didnt wanna misread the room but can I offer the fandom a song analysis in this trying time?#I also think Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish is exactly Anthony's view on Ian this is my truth lol#anon

𝔓𝔬𝔯𝔱𝔯𝔞𝔦𝔱𝔰 𝔬𝔣 𝔄𝔯𝔪𝔬𝔯𝔦𝔠𝔞𝔫 𝔖𝔬𝔳𝔢𝔯𝔢𝔦𝔤𝔫𝔰 𝔞𝔫𝔡 ℌ𝔢𝔦𝔯𝔰 [1/4]
Everard III had a problem. Four decades of marriage to Lady Yvette Holland had produced only a single child, a girl, whom the couple had named Thérèse. Under Armorican law, the Princess could not accede to the throne, leaving the succession up to chance. If he were to die, the crown could pass either to Thérèse's young son, Prince Andre, or to the children of Everard's detested younger brother, Prince Henri. Knowing that Parliament would likely favor his estranged brother's sons over the teenaged Andre, Everard found a legislative solution. With the passage of the Inheritance Act of 1976, Thérèse became Armorica's first Crown Princess, securing the succession. In this triumphant 1978 portrait, Everard III gazes confidently at the viewer, hands placed firmly on the shoulders of his chosen heirs...the portrait embodies the greatest contradiction of his reign: faced with the possibility of a forced reconciliation with his brother, he cast aside a century of legal precedent and his own chauvinistic worldview to affirm the rights of his daughter, "a mere woman." Arthur Farrier. "The Succession in Oils: A Century of Royal Armorican Portraiture." In Overview of Meritrean Portraiture, 1900 - 2050, edited by H. L. Orville, 159 - 197. difficult to discuss The Orville without discussing Galaxy Quest, especially the casting; they got Sigourney Weaver for gods sake (“Goldie Hawn? you know, the one with the hair”) as well as Alan Rickman and even Tim Allen has more charisma than Seth Macfarlane, sorry

eddie bracken as orville wingait in summer stock (1950)
#don't get it wrong abigail whacking orville upside the head is during their comedy backstage 5 sec to Resolution ending rush#literal last minute conclusion crunch in unsurprising formatting lol; i chose a more peaceful gif to end on. note the prior one's [feet Up]#i hope this illustrates There Is Much Material. more clips than this & truly as good or better a role as any others to choose from here#summer stock#conveniently it's apparently wingait in the movie but via that casting news this (2023) role is wingate#tcm fancam life...we've all been there. akd talking abt meet me in st. louis like maybe i should rewatch lol. have to muddle through someho#anyways there's for sure room to like grab a little thread of plot and enhance it in this story. e.g. orville & abigail could talk Thrice#their B-plot / more idiosyncratic romance there is still >>>>>> the main JUDY & GENE one unsurprisingly even w/o a third convo lol#whoops the main guy is an asshole. judy/jane learns she loves show business so just kinda may as well be in love w/the show guy ig#like girl you don't have to be...but ofc already although her & orville's dynamic is pleasant enough she seems somewhat disinterested#while fascinatingly for our purposes though orville is framed a bit like [this NERD] he can't be too dunked on b/c [romantic B-plot]#meanwhile abigail's Undeserving Of Gene/Joe (she is but she's too good for him) qualities being just that she's been too Indulged so like#in her lack of protestant ethic farm work she's so conceited & sensitive that she wants to rest & not be yelled at???#smash cut to for real judy/jane on Opening Night like asking tentatively like oh romantic interest you're Not gonna yell at me..??#but she's been Hard Working so she will tolerate the physical AND emotional demands. but she's also more Talented than abigail#so joe need not be mean to her Anyways like. okay wild maybe we could rework that but congrats abigail for NOT ending up w/him fr#meanwhile orville's arc (joe has none to speak of save realizing he wants to make out w/this other woman now) is as clear as anyone's#extricate himself from otherwise only getting to be an extension of his father who is generally interfering / directing / demeaning him als#another ''well i don't know about that'' element in that when orville Does tell him to cut that out his dad actually just rolls with that#and becomes more amicable lol like well that does work out & it's unsurprisingly like cmon orv you can't LET him treat you like that...#and if you didn't? he'd just be like ''oh haha okay''...like is abigail supposed to be ''right'' abt uhh romance there but yet she's just#too sensitive to handle Tell Don't Ask / No Apologies? maybe; but they both end up getting to Not Stand For It lol. i think that that would#ofc still be fun to develop. whereas w/joe it's like uh maybe make him Not a huge asshole in the end / judy p much in love w/Showbiz....#abigail & orville out here decidedly Not About Nonsense....but still a bit zany ig such that after the [imagine the foley] hit: it's good#like i'm sure it's ''orville's still enough of a NERD to be chill w/that'' & ''abigail's still DIFFICULT enough to put her foot down''#['50 gender politics] we all know that couple whose flaws & idiosyncrasies allow them to Apologize & Ask & use their inside voices#and be all upset if someone's trying to demean them. unlike True Romance of the man who won't bully his wife if she earns it :')#joe could instead uhh be a harried director who's actually Wrong for being a dick to his gf (if we even include that) w/the various sources#of pressure to make a show Work but there's all this req'd spontaneity / flexibility anyways & he learns that even if he's clenching throug#it he can Not take it out on other people / Make it succeed by Making ppl do anything. & also jane reminds him of Passion for this.

so from all the twitter rumors I've divined that:
-seems PRETTY likely that The Orville was renewed, but we won't hear this news for awhile?
-if true, it sounds like filming won't start until 2025, but you know what? I'm fine with waiting as long as it comes. We had to wait FOREVER for New Horizons and it was 100000% worth it because that is one of the finest seasons of television I've seen in a long while. I appreciate that this show takes the time to get it right, I know the VFX houses that worked on New Horizons are extremely proud of the work they've done because unlike what the Marvel machine does, they had the time to do beautiful work. And it really is beautiful work. Every episode of New Horizons felt like a feature film.
-Seth has repeatedly said that it will take time if it's renewed, because they have to get everyone under contract again, but he's also said that he's not worried about getting everyone back on board because the cast loves it
-in January he said it was "50/50" that it would be renewed
-in February/March rumors began floating around that season 4 was being written
-as an aside, I have noticed social media activity for this show has increased a lot? especially here on tumblr. The Orville tag has suddenly gotten kind of bumpin as opposed to a couple years ago when New Horizons was actually airing and I'd go to "the orville" tag and 90% of the posts were about Orville Peck. I think it's done well for Disney.
-idk, I'm feeling bullish on this one? Seth wants to make more of this show and he has a really good track record of getting his way with networks when he really wants to keep a show going.
