Day Twenty-One: Hangover

Everyone had split up to various rooms in the apartment. Shepard was glad he managed to get into his own room before one of his squadmates stumbled into it. What he wasn't expecting was to find Javik in his bathroom. The Prothean was muttering something about his stasis pod and Liara. Shepard let him be, taking Kaidan by the hand and going around to see how everyone else was faring.

Liara and Garrus looked reasonably composed, though Garrus was a little more questionable. He gave Shepard some code to remember. It dredged up a hazy memory of last night when he found Zaeed tinkering with his hot tub. Damn, he really hoped he just imagined most of that conversation. Wrex was just as perky as ever, though naturally he expressed disappointment that nothing was broken last night.

“Good morning, Shepard,” Samara greeted. “Good morning, Major Alenko.” She was sitting cross-legged by a fake tree. Shepard found her like this during the party, and it didn't surprise him at all that she was composed enough to be here again.

“Morning,” Shepard returned. “Did you enjoy the party?”

“I did, thank you. It was pleasant seeing everyone again.”

“I'm not sure how pleasant everyone will be this morning,” Shepard commented with a wry smile. “Can't say I've seen so many different species dealing with a hangover, let alone in the same place.”

“The place is still standing,” Kaidan pointed out, “so that's a plus.”

As they headed downstairs, Shepard caught a whiff of cooking eggs. His stomach wasn't sure it was ready for that yet. He nodded to Zaeed, who was lounging on the couch. The old bounty hunter looked none the worse for wear. Steve was on the other couch with his head tilted back, eyes closed.

“You okay there, Steve?” Shepard checked.

“All those tequila shots with James did not prepare me for last night,” the shuttle pilot answered. “No more convincing Joker to shoot a gun.”

“Wonder how he's doing?” Kaidan asked. He and Shepard found the man hunched over the bar. Joker managed a weak greeting before begging them to not breathe so loudly.

In the kitchen, James was making eggs while Miranda and Grunt waited. Kasumi stood just outside the kitchen area. She looked up when Shepard and Kaidan drew near.

“Hey, Shep. You may want to stock your fridge. I drank some milk in there and didn't realize it wasn't soy. Of course,” she added with a smile, “it's not that I'm lactose intolerant. I just don't put up with lactose's drama.”

“Of course,” Shepard echoed, barely managing to hold back a laugh. “Where's everyone else?” He figured if anybody would know, it would be her.

“Tali's in one of the downstairs bedrooms. Jacob and Jack are in another room doing a morning work-out. Traynor is in the poker room looking through the extranet sites.” Shepard raised an eyebrow, waiting. Kasumi held up both hands. “I swear I didn't post anything!”

“All right, I'll trust you,” Shepard said with a smile. So everyone made it through the party in one piece.

A part of him hoped that everyone took a long time to recover from their hangovers. He wasn't ready for this to be over just yet.

cal & squadmates ; relations

( these are some of my thoughts will playing the games, there is no expectation for rpers of said characters to follow my view or interpretation of the dynamic. )

k.aidan ; listenn,,, they're both military brats. their loyalty to the alliance comes first (& maybe it will always come first, but that's exactly why they get that side of themselves other can't), and they still choose to break the rules for each other. they both had a childhood that they were pushed to extremes and found their footing in their careers. despite their different rank, k.aidan doesn't refrain from voicing his disagreements. he helps keep her grounded, when everything descends into chaos. and despite everything, there's a part of her that feels she could be just cal with him... one day...

l.iara ; doomed yuri,,,,, them in me1 ! having spent a large part of their lives lonely, focused on their careers, struggling to make connections, and suddenly, they connect fast and unexpectedly. after saren and the beacon throws her off course, l.iara sees her resilience immediately. so much happens in so little time, and then cal dies and... knowing that l.iara gives her body to cerberus, is ... an adjustment ... she has a lot of complicated feelings about it, but... she can't erase everything she feels for l.iara

(personally i see either romance working for cal)

t.ali ; she does have a soft spot for t.ali. she is the one who brings out her engineering side, and she loves to listen to her talk about ships and engineering. in me1 she brought her a white noise machine because t.ali had trouble sleeping in quiet. she is bursting with curiosity and eager to experience everything and it's intoxicating for cal. she also know a thing or two about parents having high expectations but also big shoes to fill. she sees the person t.ali has grown into, and she seeks her out in normandy (both versions of it)

g.arrus ; g.arrus is her buddy, she takes him often on missions, she relies on him, they have each other's back. their friendship is a steady, gradual thing. she is very by the book in me1 while g.arrus is the opposite. they often talk about that between missions and she's trying to influence him a more paragon side. finding him on omega is as unexpected as is it relieving because finally she knows she'll have one person on the field she doesn't have to look over her shoulder. they often tease each other, taking some of the weight off along with those remarks.

m.iranda ; they have such a complex dynamic. there's a part of cal that doesn't know if she'll ever get past m.iranda's involvement in project lazarus. she takes her on missions at first, as a performance. to say here i am working with you (even when she doesn't trust c.erberus). making some minor renegade choices to have m.iranda question if she was brought back right. however the more she learns about her the more... it is hard to not understand her. she feels the need for perfection in herself, talking as if she's a tool for others... they're mirrors almost. crafted for greatness but working for a different agenda until they don't. m.iranda's loyalty mission opens up this other side of her than makes cal question her judgement.

N7 Month, 2023 - Day 11: Crew

No one wanted to be there, least of all Shepard, but it was a rare occasion where everyone was in one place again, and the air in the room reflected it. The artist was becoming panicked at how loosely the majority of the crew seemed to interpret her appointment time: Garrus was more than twenty minutes later, and entered impassive to his own tardiness. The artist tried several times to get everyone’s attention, but the old friends had taken to talking in a huddle nearby a refreshment table. She looked at Shepard helplessly.

“Alright everybody,” Shepard raised his voice over the cheerful din. “We’re all here to get this done, so let’s get started now that everybody’s here.”

“How do you want us?” Kaidan asked the artist, coming to stand beside Shepard.

It was for the official portrait—the Normandy crew—which was promised to the Smithsonian once it was completed. The majority of the crew had posed for a photograph earlier in the day, but for the Senior staff it was decided a massive painting was in order.

Hikka Haufika, the artist chosen by several planetary governments, busily arranged the reluctant aliens and humans into formation, explaining under her breath how she didn’t want to do the standard rugby line-up portrait, but wanted to create something dynamic, something that communicated more than simple likeness. All the while, a young intern stalked about the studio with a camera drone: recording the accompanying video which would be played beneath the portrait once it hung in the museum.

“I don’t understand,” Tali crossed her arms, tone threatening at boredom. “Couldn’t you just do a complete three dimensional scan of us? Then we won’t have to hold these poses for so long.”

“I’m an old fashioned painter,” Haufika declared, then quieter when the camera drone approached her face. “I’m not only trying to capture the look of your crew, but the energy.”

“Oh, you’ll get energy from this group,” Liara said cryptically as she was positioned standing at a computer console. The artist brought more laptops and data-pads and artfully strewn them about her.

“So how long is this going to take?” James asked, seeming to sink further into himself as he watched the crew members plucked out a lineup one by one to be placed in the scene

“Never thought I’d catch you afraid to hold a pose,” Steve chimed in.

“Very funny.” James rolled his eyes.

“You don’t have to stand completely still, James,” Kaidan was now standing in the scene, sleeves on his uniform rolled up, gripping a Valkyrie assault rifle awkwardly. “Nobody expects you up here holding your breath for two hours.”

“Two hours…” Javik groaned. He frowned at the artist and she returned the frown in kind, skipped over him to pose the next person instead.

“Yeah, Shepard’s not sweating about it.” Joker was seated on a stool to one side of the frame, the artist taking his hat on and off and on and off before finally leaving it on. “How many is this for you now, Shepard?”

“Two sculptures, fifteen holo-photos, but this is only my second painting.” Shepard stepped into the scene himself and took up a pose beside Kaidan.

“Commander Shepard,” Haufika tapped his shoulder. “Actually, I was hoping you would stand right over here.”

“Oh.” Shepard replied passively, but did not move. “Any way you can put me here instead?”

“I, um… it wasn’t really what I…” she stuttered as Shepard remained impassive. “Um. Sure. You can stand there. Whatever.”

This caused a chain reaction, however, that saw several people’s poses have to be recast and a few people moved around.

“You know,” Garrus droned, standing with one arm on James’ shoulder, a sniper rifle slung over his. “Whenever humans paint a turian, we always end up looking like monsters…” Haufika looked offended, but before she could speak up, Dr. Chakwas guffawed from her position.

“You’ve been on the extranet too much.”

“Miss Haufika recently opened a gallery in Cairo, and was a featured exhibit at the Volus neo-classicism museum last year.” Liara chimed in, and the artist seemed pleased. Took up sketching on her canvas again.

“Well, at least we know she knows how to paint an Evo suit,” Tali remarked dryly, a prop shotgun placed atop a fake console she was ‘reading.’

They continued to chat as Haufika set to work laying down the bones of the scene. A few people were shifted around. James was bored. Kaidan eventually leaned forward, whispered in Shepard’s ear:

“Well, is this about what you expected?”

“Javik hasn’t stormed out, yet, so it’s better than it could’ve been,” Shepard returned quietly.

“Hey there,” Tali’s voice rose, sparkling, above the rest of the chatter. “Shepard, Kaidan… if you two aren’t careful, the painting’s going to have you two whispering to each other.”

“Remember, this is for posterity,” Steve rejoined. “This is going to be the image of the Normandy crew to future generations.” His tone was tinged with irony, but Shepard smiled all the same.

He had never wanted to be the sort of person who was ‘remembered’ as a hero, or anything other than a friend. Whatever ‘energy’ it was Hikka Haufika captured, he hoped the image the future would remember would be one of him, surrounded by friends.
