the barbie movie was actually kind of bad
#i was struck halfway through by a distinct feeling id felt before:#as a child sitting in my basement watching those shitty mcdonalds cartoon movies they gave out for a while#that had like branded little shitty mcdonald's movies with grimace and the hamburgler#the movie is first and foremost a commercial for barbie. so it is insanely corportized#mattel is ultimately redeemed in the film because it has to be. because mattel wouldnt pay money for a movie that said otherwise#so it's meaningless just on that level. it's just a total advertisement#barbieland despite ostensibly being a land powered by imagination and ideas is surprisingly stagnate and unchanging#which doesnt even make sense bc wells of signification are constantly evolving as marked by the many barbies#and the many kinds of barbies and kens. but for some reason the movie had to have barbieland be an inversion of reality#so everything ends up just. meh. no real point#and barbie's quest for womanhood culminates in her going to the OBGYN which frankly i think is kind of gross#in a movie that had a whole lot to say about being a woman it really did end with saying womanhood is getting your vagina checked huh#like. what the fuck was this movie trying to say. at all
