complaints about tone tags on tumblr dot com kind of fall flat because the medium in which they are most useful is, like, the exact opposite of this site. of course there's little need for them in a format where you inherently have the time and space to write out an explanation for everything you say; tone tags were born of formats like twitter (previously very character-limited) and discord (large and faster-moving chats where you might not have the time to type everything out)

even as someone who doesnt really use tone tags, it is a bit difficult to take complaints against them seriously when every time someone presents an alternative, they're suggesting the most boring and unfunny way to write a sentence. like isn't the whole idea to mimic how you'd say something verbally and then clarify the tone of it. are you THAT absurdly desperate to lose the snappiness of a joke
