i don’t hate the crossroads flashbacks we got (they’re woefully underbaked but they gave me felassan cameos. i can forgive a lot for a felassan cameo) i really just wish there had been more.
i understand not everyone is here for the arlathan lore but given that the major antagonists for 4/5 of the game are elgar’nan and ghilan’nain?? they absolutely should’ve made the rebellion against the evanuris a bigger part of the game!
there’s so much to play with there to actually pull off the rook-solas parallels that they wanted to achieve if you set up the crossroads flashbacks in a way that echoes the missions rook & their team are facing in the present. infiltrating one of the evanuris’ ceremonies (arlathan forest) for example, or defending an outpost that has been discovered by the evanuris (weisshaupt).
it would’ve given them a chance to flesh out elgar’nan & ghilan’nain’s characters as well as introduce us to more of the rebellion. it would also have given the new cast an actual basis to form opinions on solas, prior to the “castling” moment.
#let your villains be complex again bioware i BEG you. meredith…. loghain….. i miss u so bad.#the bones of something that could be compelling are here but it is bereft of any of the meat……..#i really think the flashbacks would’ve been the ideal place to expand on the parallels but they never really take it there#idk. i played through the isle of the gods mission again and i dont think the harding/davrin choice does parallel disrupt and conquer#or… it tries? but really if you want to double down on the parallels you should lose your distraction team.#THAT’S the plan solas is executing in the flashback and rook plays the same card here and only loses 1 member of their team.#there’s no meaningful reason why rook loses less here. the difference between the two is meant to be that rook is honest with their team#but that doesn’t rly…. relate to why they lose only harding/davrin#the game never really lets you feel the stakes of what you’re doing. it should! that’s the only way the parallels CAN work!#they just fall flat when rook & co defeat the odds with the power of optimism and poorly thought out strategy#the moral of the story just reads as ‘skill issue. solas should’ve toppled the empire with the power of friendship’#sorry i’m just yapping today. i have a cold#veilguard spoilers#da4 spoilers#veilguard critical
