Brandspeak: The Next Chapter of News Has Begun
The following column is by ‎Jennifer Risi, Worldwide Chief Communications Officer and Managing Director at Ogilvy Media Influence.
Findings from the annual Ogilvy Media Influence global media survey are in, and drumroll please… Facebook has emerged as the #1 gatekeeper for news, validating that advancements in digital media and new technology are altering the way in which we consume news. The results were based on the opinions of more than 250 news media professionals across North America, Asia-Pacific countries (APAC), and the European, Middle Eastern and Africa (EMEA) regions—earning 39 percent of the vote internationally.

The results demonstrate that as the digital universe continues to quickly expand, journalists are keenly aware that traditional media is gaining new and increased exposure through digital gatekeepers like Facebook that have enormous established audiences. Given the explosion of social media within the media mix and the rapid technological advancements that have continued to drive its growth, there’s little wonder why Facebook is now seen among journalists worldwide as a top news aggregator.
However, traditional media news sources, such as newspapers, magazines and broadcast networks held their own as a top source for news consumption among those surveyed, trailing by only six percent. These findings indicate that journalists recognize that new gatekeepers like Facebook have become one of the largest conduits back to legacy media sources. Think of it this way, a traditional news piece may be discovered on Facebook more quickly than its own platform, but ultimately, the discovery always drives traffic back to the traditional source.
The results also uncovered another salient point that further puts the findings into perspective. Most journalists (40 percent) believe that earned media is the most effective component of the media mix today with social media at 27 percent and influencer engagement at 13 percent amongst other options in a brand’s communications arsenal to build reputation and influence. Collectively, these results send a clear signal to public relations professionals that they still play a significant role today in helping to shape brand identity for clients.
The findings also indicate that journalists fully comprehend how powerful advancing digital platforms are driving the format for storytelling, dictating that they change their reporting approach—and they are changing their approach, more quickly than ever. That means brands need to be just as nimble. Understanding how journalists view their role in the media equation helps to contextualize today’s advanced digital media capabilities and illustrates how communications professionals can conform to the digital media landscape as it continues to evolve. Results from the Ogilvy Media Influence survey help provide that understanding.
The good news is that communications experts have been through a digital media revolution before and have been able to successfully navigate the terrain and find ways to blaze new trails. The introduction of digital media into the communications mix completely shifted the traditional media model, mandating that media outlets modify their reporting and distribution strategies to keep up with consumer demands, which were largely driven by technological advancements.
Traditional media, especially print outlets, took a major beating when it came to their ability to adapt to the new technology. Interestingly enough, despite all the flack print media received for not moving swiftly enough or being smart about the high-tech media ecosphere, the survey revealed that most journalists (40 percent) believe print media have been the most successful traditional platform to adapt to the evolving digital world. Television and newswires split the remaining vote; TV showing just a slight (six percent) edge over newswires.
Print news stalwart The New York Times’ digital metamorphosis into T Brand Studio has proven to be a successful print transformation model, combining new technological capabilities with the newspaper’s signature storytelling. The new brand has been so successful that reports suggest the company has plans to expand the platform into a full-fledged marketing agency. We’re also seeing traditional media outlets make adjustments in their newsrooms. Like Fortune magazine, for example, which recently combined its print and digital staff. The publication’s editor Clifton Leaf stated that the new structure, “better reflects the way [Fortune] works.”
As the digital media era continues to transform the creation, distribution, and consumption of content, we are starting to see media outlets embrace new ways of storytelling like never before as they look to not only maintain momentum, but move into the driver’s seat. I believe we are just scratching the surface of the news media’s reinvention in the digital world. If the journey so far is any indicator, no one knows exactly what road will prove most effective, but journalists and news media houses are stepping up to the challenge. As modern PR professionals, we can be assured of one constant amidst a sea of change—earned media and influence will still have the last word.

The 2019 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report (DBIR) came out not long ago. There are a lot of incremental change in the 78 pages of charts and graphs, which is normal for a report of this kind. The DBIR isn’t rocking anyone’s boat with blockbuster findings; instead, it reveals trends that may or may not be comforting. Overall the report serves as a useful barometer of the state of data protection, as a reminder that things are not good in the world of cybersecurity, and that we who make the tools enterprises rely on to protect their data should strive to do better by them.
Fact is, innovation in cybersecurity has fallen behind innovation by the global hacker community. While global spending on security has, according to Gartner, exceeded $124B, hackers have not been idle. They’ve adopted methods that allow them to overwhelm traditional security tools and take advantage of plain old human frailty. As long as our species remains predisposed to click on interesting emails, rely on easy (or no) passwords, or browse to places we shouldn’t, the hackers will have the edge. Unless, that is, we come up with radically different approaches to security that are clever enough to take into account our collective weaknesses. In the meantime data breaches continue apace, with thousands of incidents reported in 2018 resulting in around 5 billion sensitive records compromised.
It’s a simple matter of mathematics and scale. Hackers have started using offensive AI to generate and deliver unique malware at a rate of four new samples per second. Cheap and abundant compute, as well as a profusion of toolkits in the wild, have actually made it easy to develop highly resilient and evasive “designer threats” that can target a specific enterprise.  For example at the 2018 BlackHat IBM Research introduced DeepLocker, a toolkit to deliver highly obfuscated and evasive malware. This class of AI-powered evasive malware conceals its intent until it reaches a specific victim.
While DeepLocker was an academic experiment, today it is possible for anyone to buy a tailor-made virus that is guaranteed to get past the top 10 to 15 major security solutions the first time it is deployed. Such attacks are sometimes augmented by an AI algorithm that can add to the stealthiness of the malware, depending on the environment and attempts made to discover it. AI raises the stakes, with an advantage for the attackers.  They need to get it right only once to score while defenders need to defend successfully 24/7/365.
When an attack is successful in getting by perimeter defenses, according to Figure 28 of the DBIR, the typical time to compromise is measured in minutes. From there it only takes a few hours for a hacker to move laterally to their target and exfiltrate valuable data. Compare that to the time it takes for an enterprise to discover it has been breached, which is measured in months and then, once a breach is discovered, the days or weeks it takes to contain the breach. If that doesn’t give you pause, you aren’t paying attention.
The message for the enterprise is simple: in today’s threat environment, speed kills. Any failure to keep pace with the threat is an exacerbating factor, but we’ve settled into a pattern of relying on incremental improvement in existing security tech. It’s not good enough. The scale and speed of today’s attacker onslaught is more than enough to overwhelm traditional approaches to security, and, as security researcher Richard Seiersen states in this LinkedIn post, “A 99 percent success rate equates to a 100 percent failure rate” when you rely on signature- and sandbox-based security.
How do we—indeed, can we—slow down the pace of the threat actors? Maybe that’s the wrong question. Instead we should be thinking in terms of increasing the speed of our ability to detect and prevent threats.
The first step involves recognizing and understanding the source of the biggest external threats and focusing attention there. According to the DBIR, email (94%) and the web (23%) are the primary means of threat delivery (the overlap of those two figures accounts for cases where initial compromise is made via email and the victim is directed to a web page where the payload may be completed). Establishing a smarter, faster perimeter defense becomes the key to prevention.
We believe that, where human intelligence often lets us down, artificial intelligence can close the security gap. And not garden-variety AI, which has been used for years in cybersecurity with less than stellar results, but with deep learning, the most sophisticated subfield of machine learning. The application of deep learning to the challenges presented by hackers has shown excellent results in its ability to detect and prevent threats from getting through the gate no matter how amorphous your perimeter may be. Thus far we’ve demonstrated nearly 100% detection rates against daily threat samples, including zero-day variants, and automatically deliver threat detection verdicts in less than a second, stopping threats cold.
That’s faster than Gladys at the front desk can click a link promising a cute new cat video. In fact, she’ll never even see that email. And neither will Charlie in sales who is eager to please everyone who reaches out to him in hopes of getting closer to his next big deal. Speed kills in security, where humans never seem to learn from our mistakes, but faster saves. And deep learning can act before we have a chance to make the same mistakes (again).

Saint Laurent’s S/S 2020 Menswear Show Violated Environmental Regulations in Malibu
Anthony Vaccarello’s ‘70s rock-influenced S/S 2020 menswear collection for Saint Laurent took place on a placid beach in Malibu and featured glitter suits, skintight pants and plenty of men in eyeliner. It also, according to a recent report, violated a host of local environmental regulations in place to preserve the integrity of Malibu’s fragile beach ecosystem. Matt Meyerhoff, a spokesman for Malibu City Hall, told Vogue Business, “They built a boardwalk all the way across the beach. They shored it up with plastic sandbags, which are illegal in the city. People were outraged.” Apparently, local government had denied Saint Laurent an event permit to host their show at idyllic hidden beach Paradise Cove,  but decided to evade the decision by applying for a filming permit from a city contractor instead. Malibu also has a local “dark sky” ordinance banning bright lights in the evening so residents can see the stars and wildlife aren’t confused by artificial light, which Saint Lauren also ignored in favour erecting towering lights. Stella McCartney Enters Partnership With LVMH
After parting ways with Kering in March 2018, Stella McCartney has entered into a partnership with the luxury conglomerate’s biggest rival, LVMH. According to WWD, “the goal of the partnership will be for the house of Stella McCartney to accelerate its worldwide development in terms of business and strategy, ‘while of course remaining faithful to its long-lasting commitment to sustainability and ethical fashion.’” McCartney’s brand has long been at the forefront of sustainability, offering organic cotton as early as 2005 and supporting environmental causes consistently through philanthropy; LVMH was one of the first large companies in France to instigate a sustainability department, over 25 years ago. LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault has made almost $200 million dollars every single day this year. This astonishing figure – totalling $39 billion in wealth accumulation for 2019 alone — puts him right behind Amazon’s Jeff Bezos on the list of the world’s richest people, knocking Microsoft Bill Gates from his long-held number-two post. “Officials at LVMH declined to comment on the ranking, which fluctuates daily in tandem with stock market prices,” WWD reported. Mejuri’s worldwide takeover continues apace, as the millennial-friendly Canadian jewellery brand is set to open a new store on Melrose Avenue on August 10th. This is the first store the brand has opened since receiving $23 million in Series B funding, which it receives after garnering waitlists of over 70,000 people for a neutral-coloured jewellery travel case. Mejuri’s brick-and-mortar locations technically serve as showroom instead of stores. The store exist so customers can try on samples of the jewelry and anything they chose to purchase will be shipped out at a later date. “California has always been an important market for Mejuri and there’s nothing more valuable to us than meeting our community where they are,” CEO Noura Sakkijha told WWD. “The Los Angeles customer embraces our mission to make luxury an everyday habit, and we’re excited to bring Mejuri to the West Coast.” (WWD)
