Lifehacker Lastpass
You’ve got to appreciate some of the irony in that title. Lifehacker is part of the Gawker group of websites. Some hackers got into their system and downloaded their database and source code. They also ran some scripts agains the database and were able to find nearly 200,000 people who were using passwords that weren’t very strong.

Is Last Password Safe
Lifehacker Lastpass
LastPass hacked: Time to change the last password you'll ever need to remember LastPass data has been compromised. Although there's no need to panic. LastPass Universal Linux Installer. The Universal Linux installer installs browser extensions for Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. LastPass for Firefox (i386 and x64) LastPass browser extension for Mozilla Firefox. This will also work on other Mozilla based browsers such as SeaMonkey, Mozilla, etc.
I had an account on Lifehacker from years ago. Since I didn’t consider it a huge security issue I used a simple five letter, single word password. Since it was easy to break this password, my username, password and email address was part of the roughly 200,000 released in decrypted form on the web.
I panicked just a bit when I saw my password on the list. Fortunately I’ve been using 1Password so I was quickly able to search through all of my logins and identify where I had previously used that password. It turns out it wasn’t used in many other places–mainly on things where I needed a quick account and wanted a password that I’d be likely to guess again.
So I was able to quickly change anything where I might have been at risk. Still it shook me up a bit and made me take a closer look at my password strategy. Ten years ago I used 3 different passwords. I had one for banking and websites where the risk of losing my data was high. I had another for things like email accounts where the risk was moderate and a third for sites like LifeHacker where the damage of someone logging in as me was minimal.
However, the real risk wasn’t that someone would login as me to make comments. The real risk was precisely what happened with LifeHacker–someone got into the website, discover a bunch of users passwords and then use those passwords to get access to their other accounts on the internet.
In the past five years I’ve taken a bit of a different approach to creating passwords. Whenever possible, I try to create a unique random password for each website I need a login for. That way if something happens like what happened with LifeHacker, the hackers will only have access to the site they hacked–something they probably have already in order to get the passwords in the first place.
How passwords are stored
If you want to understand how to create a secure password, it is worth taking some time to understand how passwords are stored on modern web applications.
Had I used a longer password that wasn’t a word in some language, the hackers probably wouldn’t have been able to get my password. LifeHacker stored their passwords as a hash (basically a type of one way encryption). When you login, LifeHacker’s servers took your password, ran it through the hash function and then compared it to what they had previously stored. If the values match, then you can login. If not, then you don’t have the right password. As you can see this meant that LifeHacker didn’t have to keep a copy of each users password on their server. However, you can get dictionaries of common words mapped to their hash value. This is how the hackers were able to get my password–they simply looked for a hash.
Here is an example. First lets create a hash of a common password “qwerty”. We do this using the following command at the OS X command line:
The hash is that long string of numbers and letters. This is what gets stored instead of your password on the server.
Lifehacker Lastpass Login
How to break hashes
The hash process isn’t reversible. There isn’t an easy way to take a86850deb2742ec3cb41518e26aa2d89 and “decode” it. However, “qwerty” if a fairly common password. If one were to take a dictionary of common words and run them through the hash process they could create a database of all the hash values for common passwords. “qwerty” is a common password–common enough that someone probably has it listed with its hash value on the internet. So if we do a google search for:
We are going to find a number of results–most are showing that a86850deb2742ec3cb41518e26aa2d89 is the md5 hash for the word “qwerty”. This is how the hackers were able to break my password–even though all they had was the hashed value.
Safe passwords
Hopefully that explains why using a password that can be found in a dictionary is a bad idea. So how do you create passwords that can’t be broken in this way? You need to use a password that the hackers aren’t going to be able to find in a list of common words. Also the longer the password, the safer you are.
So a password like:
gorilla
is bad, but a password like:
dkfje&KPiOudkfje(*(3!
is good. While that last password is secure, there is one little problem. Can you spot it? Right. It is nearly impossible to remember. A simple solution is to use a password that combines a number of words. Here are some good passwords:
TheGorillaAteSoup.OhMy!
mydoghas1flea!
bob.can’t.run.8.miles.
Picking a pattern is another good method. These passwords look random until you try to type them. You basically remember the pattern on your keyboard.
a’s;dlfkgjh
%TGBnhy6
zxcvxcvbcvbnvbnmbnm,nm,.m,./
Use different passwords
Even if you use a secure password, you don’t want to use the same one on every site. Tthere are other ways for hackers to get your password. Some times hackers will install keystroke loggers on public computers in order to capture passwords people are using. If you have a secure password, but use the same one on all of your logins, you might login to check your facebook messages at a library and later find that someone has been assessing your banking. I have logins for over 400 websites. There are some techniques I can use to remember a different password for each site, but it simply doesn’t scale to 400 logins.
Thats where software like 1Password, LastPass, or RoboForm comes in handy.
1Password
I have been using 1Password for several years. 1Password lets you create a random password whenever you need it and it keeps track of your username and login for each website. When you return to a site, 1Password logs back in for you. You have a password on 1Password that gives you access to all of your other passwords.
Lifehacker Lastpass Update
The passwords generated by 1Password are long and random. You can edit the settings to try to make the passwords easier to pronounce if you are trying to remember them or let it make them completely random and very long.
1Password is very nice, but it works as an application with a handful of plugins for different browsers. This works pretty well, but you really need an ubiquitous tool if you want to be able to keep all of your passwords secure. Otherwise you end up using simpler passwords on things you need to access often and from different locations. Often these are the very things you want most to protect.
What frustrated me with 1Password is that I couldn’t use it on my Blackberry or my Linux computer. As long as I stayed on my mac it was fine, but if I tried to use another machine things got a bit more tricky.
LastPass
This week I’ve started looking at LastPass. While 1Password is an application with some plugins, LastPass seems to be entirely plugin based and they have a great deal of cross platform compatibility. The interface doesn’t seem quit as polished as 1Password, but this is probably because they are making it run on a bunch of different platforms. Also LastPass offers synching between different devices so everything stays up to date. Any decryption is done on your local machine so your passwords are only stored encrypted in the cloud.
One interesting feature of LastPass is their security audit that will show you how secure your passwords are overall. You can even have it show you all logins that share a password so you can easily identify the places where you need to bolster your security. Another feature that looks useful is the ability to share your password with others.
LastPass is free for its basic version which will do all that most people need. You can pay $1 per month for extra features like Blackberry support.
Conclusion
Take the time to think about your password strategy. Mistakes are going to happen and you want to make sure you are in the safest position possible if your password for a site somehow gets discovered like mine did.

The Stenographer and The Hero’s Journey
The Hero’s Journey is a universal cycle arising from narratives of human experience which can be found throughout mythology, literature, and entertainment as outlined by Joseph Campbell in The Hero With a Thousand Faces in 1949 (for more see The Power of Myth on Netflix). Note that not every phase applies to every journey, and sometimes elements occur in different orders than outlined in the graphic above. This is a lens that can be applied to many areas of our lives. In this post I’ll apply it to the experience of becoming a stenographer. This isn’t meant to exclude my voice writer colleagues, as their challengers and phases may look a little different. I’ll leave it to one of my friends who use that method to delineate their journey through this framework.
The Wasteland represents the average day. It’s where nearly every movie starts. For me, it was the drudgery of restaurant management before I received The Call, when I heard about court reporting in a random conversation at a friend’s backyard party. I was not reluctant - I started at the next quarter’s start date - so I didn’t go through that phase. There was Fear when I learned of the high attrition rate. But I crossed the Threshold into school anyway because I sensed my life’s adventure somehow involved mastering that little machine. Magical Helpers materialized in the form of teachers that made an impact on my progress through school. Ascending through theory and the early speeds was a series of Road Trials. It felt like my Initiation occurred when I got into triple digit speeds; 100 words per minute is where the QWERTY set starts looking at you funny. A taste of Apotheosis came when I traveled to my first NCRA convention, and in one weekend met a presidential-suite-load of people who do this for a living. From then on, the thought “This is impossible” had no home in my mind. The Cave conjures up an image of when I walked out of my first school the last time to pursue a different path due to developments long since water under the bridge. It took Courage to trudge on in an online setting after being used to the brick and mortar experience in the early years, but some of my original Magical Helpers migrated to a new institution with me. Later developments at that second school resulted in those teachers no longer being there, and I found myself heading into the Belly of the Whale (the crisis that produces a psychological rebirth). For some time I’d been intrigued by the Magnum Steno approach to writing short. Another Threshold Crossing came when I sat out with a working reporter and experienced the pace (and density!) of a real courtroom.
That experience impressed upon me the importance of refining my writing style, and I was Rescued when I committed to retooling my theory from the ground up with lots of help from a Helper named Mark. (Note: This is not the way for everyone. It took lots of time and lots of energy to do it. But it was my way.) There were, of course, many Tests -- we’re all familiar with those. My Magical Flight didn’t happen overnight but in fits and starts on the way back up the speed ladder.
The final stage of my Hero’s Journey through court reporting school came in the form of a Dragon Battle against myself. I wrote about this in one of the first posts on this blog. The exit speeds forced me to face my greatest enemy: Me. Self-doubt and fear of success plagued me as I clashed with the RPR. Thankfully more Magical Helpers showed up to help because I kept attending state and national conventions. These amazing realtime and speed contest writers were willing to share their wisdom with me, and they helped me walk through the fires of that last Dragon Battle. After passing the final leg of the RPR, I embarked upon a professional career as a stenographer. So I’ve Returned from the quest with the Treasure of a remarkable career that blesses my life every day, and now I get to share what I learned along the way with you and anyone else my experience might help. This cycle can contextualize your journey and perhaps assist you in calling forth what you require to move forward. It can be useful in facing transformations; pondering a job change, a move, switching lanes within stenography (from freelance to official or reverse, preparing to enter CART/broadcast captioning, etc.) and many other life applications. Thank you for reading this far. I wish you the best, wherever you are on your Hero’s Journey.
For those without access to the graphic the cycle is as follows:
Wasteland > The Call > Reluctant Hero > Separation > Fear > Threshold Crossing > Magical Helper > Road of Trials > Night Sea Journey > Adventure > Initiation > Threshold Crossing > Apotheosis > Enter the Cave > Courage > Helpers > Belly of the Whale > Threshold Crossing > Rescue > Tests > Magical Flight > Dragon Battle > Return > Treasure > Wasteland

I’m going to do this one by one because you sure know how to milk something when you see it, Qwerty my old friend it’d be too long otherwise.
Clone Wars era, angsty humour.
Aka The one where Obi-Wan is interviewed by the holonet press
Little People
This holonet news channel calls itself a fancy anagram of some sort. Obi-Wan isn’t really bothered that he doesn’t know specifically. He also isn’t bothered to go find out.
Really, he’d like to get this over with as soon as possible, and get back to the business of preventing the Separatists from taking over the galaxy. He stepped off a warzone twelve hours ago, blast it - not that anyone would be able to tell from his pristine robes and cloak - but when the Chancellor overrules the Jedi Council, the Jedi have no choice but to obey.
It would seem the people of the Republic wish to know more about General Kenobi, the mysterious Negotiator. Chancellor Palpatine had said something about it raising war bonds. It had taken every bit of Obi-Wan’s experience and control to agree politely.
The studio is a mess of clanking equipment, motioning staff, and trailing wires. Obi-Wan pauses for a moment by the small side-door he entered by and examines the small set with curiosity. He has admittedly very little experience in holonet news broadcasting stations, but this one seems to have at least gone for the minimalistic approach. The centre of the studio is occupied with a raised platform, on which is a three-walled open room with a thin carpet and two chairs. The fake walls themselves are rather glaringly bright-hued, and the chairs seem more built for style than comfort, but there is no fake Jedi memorabilia, and no screen to play heavily-edited war-reels on.
Nobody has yet noticed Obi-Wan standing in his dark corner. With some reluctance, he steps into view of a passing staff member.
“Excuse me, might I ask-”
The Dresselian girl - very young, wearing a pair of headphones with a comm on her belt - takes one look at him and shrieks. Loudly.
Every head in the studio snaps towards them like clankers scenting clones. Silence.
Obi-Wan raises an eyebrow under the mass scrutiny, folds his hands into opposite sleeves, and inclines his head.
“Hello,” he says. “I’m afraid I haven’t the faintest idea where I’m needed.”
“General Kenobi!” A young man dressed in a smart tunic fairly leaps out of the staring crowd. “I’m your interviewer, Jal Kordic,” he says hurriedly, wiping an olive-skinned hand on one trouser leg before extending it to shake. “Sorry we didn’t, uh, notice you standing there.”
“That was of no consequence,” Obi-Wan replies, going for the affable-but-not-outright-smiling-face of diplomacy.
“Oh good, uh, let’s get you settled in hair and makeup so ohwaituhmaybe-”
“That won’t be necessary,” Obi-Wan says, deadpan. “I hope you don’t mind if I sit and wait until preparations are ready?”
“No, not at all. The seat on the right’s yours.”
“Good.” Obi-Wan walks though the still mostly-silent studio and climbs the steps to the stage, cloak swinging by his ankles. He folds himself into his assigned chair and promptly begins to look with great interest at nothing at all.
It takes a few moments, but eventually movement starts up within the studio again.
Obi-Wan smiles kindly at the girl with the headphones when she steps up beside him and places a cup of tea on the table between the chairs.
She squeaks again, blushes crimson, and runs off.
Obi-Wan hides his sigh behind the rim of his cup. The sooner he is done with this, the sooner he can return to the 212th and sanity.
“So would you say your job is difficult?”
Obi-Wan raises an eyebrow. “My…job?”
Jal Kordic nods vigorously, gesturing with a cue-card laden hand. “Your job. As Jedi. As a High General.”
“I see.” Obi-Wan pauses for a moment. “I’m afraid it is rather inaccurate to refer to my role as a Jedi as a form of occupation. It is a way of life, one I have fully accepted. As for my commission as general, it was a matter of necessity that led the Jedi to fight in the war. It is not, however, our proper role. We are peacekeepers. If we fight, we do so to end this war as quickly as possible.”
A glint appears in Kordic’s eyes. Obi-Wan is sure he has noticed that his questions have not been answered in full.
“Very well-put, General! The responsibility you and your fellow Jedi hold is enormous, and we all owe you a debt of gratitude for it. Do you ever find yourself challenged by the task put in front of you?”
“A Jedi faces many trials. I have the Force. It is enough.”
Kordic leans back, just slightly. Obi-Wan is not surprised. Apparently, not even a reporter at a well-known holonet news station is immune to fear of “Jedi mumbo-jumbo”.
Kordic coughs into his fist. “So, General, perhaps-”
Obi-Wan interrupts despite himself. “I’m very sorry, but I would prefer Master Jedi or another such title, please. I am a Jedi, after all.”
“Oh! My apologies, Master Kenobi. That’s quite all right. Now - I’m sure many viewers wish to know more about you. Your likes, dislikes, hobbies and such. After all, you’re quite the hero.”
Obi-Wan smiles at this, and latches onto an escape. “Ah, I’m no hero. You’ve mixed up our nicknames. Master Skywalker’s the one they call that.”
To his credit, Kordic jumps right onto the next juicy topic without even stopping for breath. “Ah, General Skywalker, the Hero with No Fear. Many find your friendship extraordinary. You almost seem like brothers!”
“Anakin was my apprentice. I trained him into knighthood.”
“Your apprentice! But you can’t be so very much older than him, surely?”
“Old enough,” Obi-Wan replies, dryly, as though he is jesting. There is an obligatory jitter from the assembled studio staff.
Kordic grins predatorily at him, as if acknowledging a worthy opponent.
Obi-Wan raises a cool eyebrow in return. Try me.
“You’ll have to forgive me for changing the subject,” Kordic says smoothly, “But the war has brought the Jedi into public eye more than in any recent history. Our viewership is very interested in your Order precepts - is it true Jedi do not fall in love?”
“Jedi are not allowed to form romantic attachments,” Obi-Wan replies, as easily as the question was asked. “We swore oaths to serve the Order upon the commencement of our training. We are in some ways married to our role in the Order.”
Kordic charges on, undaunted. “But surely you’ve fallen for someone before? I’m sure your Jedi mystique has attracted many a pretty face.”
For a moment, the plasti-leather chair beneath Obi-Wan morphs into velvet, and the walls beyond to Mandalorian marble. The Duchess of Mandalore’s formal receiving-room.
She had greeted him and Qui-Gon in a gown of perfect, cobalt blue, but her eyes were insightfully serious, with a touch of humour twinkling in their depths.
So much more than a pretty face.
“I’m sure that with the exposure the war brings, we Jedi are no longer so very mysterious,” Obi-Wan manages.
“You’re quite right,” Kordic replies. “But you do understand, it’s difficult not to be curious when we see that you always return unscathed from the Outer Rim sieges.”
Obi-Wan blinks once.
“Unscathed?”
“Yeah, unscathed,” Kordic says, gesturing at him with a cue-card. “Word is you came off the battlefield a few hours before this, but you certainly don’t look it. It’s awe-inspiring that you always return unharmed.”
Obi-Wan stares at him.
The taste of bacta - two hours immersion, plasma burns - is still heavy in the back of his throat. Anakin had flipped metaphorical tables bringing him back from the field. But they had gotten him to a Jedi healer on the Resolute, and it turned out that the burns weren’t so bad. They had just hurt like Sith-spawned blazes.
Obi-Wan is aware he is staying silent for perhaps a bit too long.
But he is well and truly trapped, now. To say he is wounded in heart and body just as much as his men, his pitful, newly-sent shinies who perish in their first minutes on the battlefield, his veterans who carry more scars in their minds than they do their bodies - that would be unthinkable. Little people. Little, broken people.
The Republic needs him to be untouchable, statue-like, heroic and immortal.
So Obi-Wan smiles and mutters something about being good at dodging. That gets a laugh out of Kordic.
“We’re almost done, Master Kenobi,” Kordic jokes. “If I didn’t know better, it would seem that you want to escape.”
“I do wish to return to my men, yes.”
“Oh, the clone troopers. This brings me nicely to a question sent in by one of our viewers: Do you ever have difficulty telling them apart?”
Something in Obi-Wan’s face must have changed, because Kordic’s is suddenly frozen.
“No,” Obi-Wan says, with finality.
Kordic laughs awkwardly. Obi-Wan does not join him.
The interviewer pulls himself together. “Uh, Master Kenobi, one last ques-”
“General, sir!”
The studio falls silent, every face turning towards the figure in white and gold armour that has suddenly appeared at its periphery.
“Cody,” Obi-Wan acknowledges, standing.
Cody removes his helmet. There is murmur among the assembled people as many catch sight of the bacta bandage still wrapped around his head.
“There’s a problem, sir.” Cody glances around the assembled civilians. “The situation we expected might happen has happened. And much more quickly,” he reports, carefully. “You’re needed back.”
Obi-Wan straightens. Oh, how absolutely lovely.
“I’m afraid we’re going to have to cut this short,” he says to a stunned Kordic. “I’m sorry to have to go.” There is an edge of ice to his tone that says Not at all, but here’s courtesy.
“O-okay,” Kordic stammers.
“Then you have my thanks.” Obi-Wan inclines his head and steps smartly off the platform. Cody falls into step at his side as though they are linked with puppet-strings. Nobody speaks as they disappear though the doors.
“Mr Kordic?” a junior staff calls up to the stage. “Is there enough material?”
“No, it’s okay, it’s okay,” Kordic says, rubbing his temple. “Just focus on what he said about dodging and stuff. Cut out that bit at the end, will you? And he was pretty evasive when I asked the girlfriend question. Run a special on that - and will someone get me some caf, for stars’ sake? They don’t call him The Negotiator for nothing.”

Diffusion of innovations
An idea so good it will sell itself
When Vasco da Gama sailed around the Cape of Good Hope in 1497 more than half of his crew of 160 died of scurvy. That ratio was not uncommon, and it's reported that scurvy killed more sailors than warfare, accidents or anything else.
Imagine if you had a new innovation that could prevent scurvy. People would be begging you for the answer and you'd immediately become a hero wouldn't you?
Over a hundred years later in 1601 an English sea captain called James Lancaster had a hypothesis that lemon juice would prevent scurvy.
Not only was his hypothesis correct, since we now know that scurvy is caused by vitamin C deficiency, but he conducted an experiment which was pretty compelling. He gave sailors on one of his ships a ration of lemon juice and not a single sailor got scurvy on that ship.
The sailors on the other three ships died in large and predictable numbers. He had to transfer sailors from the first ship to man the others in order to continue the voyage.
You'd think the British Navy would immediately adopt, or at least trial, this new innovation that was simple and cheap, and pretty much 100% effective.
But it wasn't until 1795, nearly two hundred years after Lancaster's successful experiment, and three hundred after Vasco da Gama's time, that the Navy finally prescribed citrus to all its sailors (the origin of the term limey for a Brit). It took even longer to reach the merchant marine.
It seems incomprehensible that a simple innovation that would wipe out scurvy and go on to save thousands of lives took so long to be adopted. You could argue that slower communication and dissemination of information slowed adoption - but by three hundred years?
It demonstrates that just having a good idea is not enough.
Dvorak keyboard
To take a more recent example, you may have heard of the Dvorak keyboard. Even if you have, you probably don't know anyone who uses one.
We know the story that the QWERTY keyboard was specifically designed to slow down typing so that the mechanical arms of typewriters wouldn't get jammed. That mechanical constraint is long gone but the layout remains ubiquitous.
The Dvorak keyboard has obvious and significant advantages over the QWERTY keyboard. Typists using it have broken all speed typing records. It also results in fewer strain injuries from prolonged keyboard use.
You could even turn your own computer's keyboard into a Dvorak one right now (albeit with some stickers on your keys or an overlay).
Despite its objective strengths almost no one uses a Dvorak keyboard.
It's not the case that innovation in text input technology has been stagnant, but the current standard keyboard it so entrenched that many innovations have been built around its inherent weaknesses – predictive text, swiping text, etc.
Again, we see that what seem like a good idea doesn't necessarily diffuse and get adopted rapidly, or at all.
Diffusion of Innovations
Those are two examples from the introduction of the book Diffusion of Innovations originally written in 1963 by Everett Rogers, an assistant professor of rural sociology at Ohio State University. It’s testament to the immutable principles of economics, human behaviour and psychology that his ideas are still so relevant today.
Crossing the Chasm by Geoffrey Moore published in 1991 is probably the more well-known book, and it builds upon the foundations that Rogers outlined over half a century ago.
Adoption
In Crossing the Chasm, Moore argues there is a chasm between the early adopters of a product and the early majority. If an innovation is to really succeed it must have appeal beyond the gadget fans, geeks and tinkerers.
You could argue that approaching the third decade of the 21st century, a globalised and more accessible market increases the absolute number of potential early adopters and a significant business can be built without needing to cross the chasm.
But if you look at it as more of a continuum, then there are necessary characteristics of an innovation that will drive a product along the innovation adoption life-cycle. These hold true equally when your innovation is making the leap beyond your immediate family, as to when it's making the leap to a new continent.
In his book, Rogers distilled these characteristics down into five factors that affect the adoption of an innovation.
Rogers’ five factors
Relative advantage
Complexity
Compatibility
Trialability
Obersvability
These five factors are a great way to frame your strategic thinking around the adoption of your product or service. The key thing is, to a greater or lesser extent, they all need to be addressed. As we've seen in the historical examples above, one of them is not enough. And even addressing four out of the five may not be enough.
1. Relative advantage
Relative advantage is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as being better than the idea it supersedes.
This is perhaps the most obvious one. People are unlikely to start using a new product if it isn’t better than what they use already. There are many dimensions to this though, so we need to think about why something new is better. Rogers also refers to perception in all of his five factors. Relative advantage doesn't just mean better technical specs.
Relativity is also important here. The advantage is not only relative to the incumbent solutions, but also to the specific group of users who are your target adopters.
Relative advantage however is necessary but not sufficient, and as with the cases of lime juice and the Dvorak keyboard, this one of the five factors doesn't guarantee success.
2. Complexity
Complexity is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as relatively difficult to understand and use.
Also fairly obvious; if a new product is perceived as complex and difficult to use, it will reduce the level and rate of adoption. An example here is early personal computers where you had to understand computer programming to use them. Once a graphical user interface and a mouse were introduced, far more people felt that a computer was something they could make use of.
In contrast, mobile phones, although technically complex, had fewer barriers due to perceived simplicity of use. The first mobile phones were operated much like the existing landline phone technology – buttons for 0-9 and a memory for storing a few most-used phone numbers. Crucially, the new technology was also compatible with the old system – a mobile phone could be used to call a landline and visa versa.
Simplicity and ease of use could be seen as relative advantages as above, but there's also a risk that increased functionality in the pursuit of relative advantage can result in greater complexity. It's up to the innovator to balance these opposing forces.
3. Compatibility
Compatibility is the degree to which an innovation is perceived as consistent with the existing values, past experiences, and needs of potential adopters.
Rogers originally looked at compatibility of an innovation with reference to social and psychological factors. He gave the example of how even the naming of an innovation must be compatible with the intended users. Trying to introduce a new a car called a Nova (which General Motors did) is probably a bad idea for the Spanish-speaking market where no va means "no-go".
One reason the Dvorak keyboard hasn't gained acceptance is that it's not compatible with people's knowledge and experience of typing. The cognitive cost of learning to type again clearly puts most people off.
For 21st century technological innovations I believe there's a whole new side to how we can interpret compatibility. Compatibility has some very practical implications when it comes to the hardware and software of our modern daily lives. A lack of compatibility can be very frustrating when you can't find the right type of charger for your phone, or you find out a computer game you want to play isn't available for your particular games console.
It's a factor that has been exploited by companies such as Apple where they've built their own ecosystem of compatibility which puts up a barrier to adoption for others.
4. Trialability
Trialability is the degree to which an innovation may be experimented with on a limited basis.
This factor is particularly important for early adopters where investing their time and money into an untested new innovation may be seen as a risk. Later adopters are more likely to see peers using a new innovation, which can either offer a chance to vicariously trial something new, or enable a trial in a more practical sense such as borrowing a friends mobile phone to make a call.
To take that idea one step further, the internet enables potential adopters to go beyond their peers and see a new innovation in use as part of YouTube reviews and on other more specialist forums.
Trialability can be designed into a product. This is common in software products where a freemium pricing model is used and users are given free, or very cheap, access to a digital product. The theory is that once that initial barrier is lowered and users have tried the new product, they will see its value and be prepared to pay for it.
Getting users 'hooked' on your product is a whole subject in itself and excellently covered in Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products by Nir Eyal.
For some new innovations though, such as a new layout for a computer keyboard, the learning curve may be too steep, even if users are given ample opportunity to try it first.
5. Observability
Observability is the degree to which the results of an innovation are visible to others.
Something has to be seen before it can be adopted. Marketing can be part of this, but Rogers discusses more organic observation such as people seeing new solar panels on a neighbour's roof and later installing their own.
In some cases, like the watching of YouTube review videos mentioned above, observing something being used can act as a secondary trialability too.
Greater observability could be another reason why mobile phones were adopted faster than home computers. Not only were they naturally more likely to be observed in use, early users often saw them as status symbols and went to extra efforts to ensure they were being seen using their new mobile phones.
In general, hardware is more observable than software. That, combined with the negligible marginal cost of shipping software to a new customer are good reasons that businesses often offer free trials for their software products.
But as with the other factors, this is not enough on its own. As we've seen, the Dvorak keyboard is fairly well known. Not only that, it's nearly always talked about in the context of its usability advantages. But almost no one uses one.
Build it and they will come
They won't.
According to Rogers' research, "most of the variance in the rate of adoption of innovation, from 49 to 87 percent, is explained by these five factors".
So to maximise the chance of your innovation gaining adoption in the market, these should be addressed. Building what you think is a great, innovative product and expecting customers to come to you isn't realistic.
Build your product with focus on a significant relative advantage compared to other products. Design to reduce complexity and increase compatibility. Increase trialiablity and obrservability.
Perception is everything and everything is relative.

Hands-on: the new, console free Kindle escapes the method for the book We investigate the new, base end Kindle, and discover what it resembles to …
I tend to judge the notoriety of electronic gadgets on how regularly I see them in the metro or airplane terminal. By that standard, the principal couple eras of Kindle were gradually picking up in fame through the span of quite a while, however never truly went standard. At the point when Amazon began cutting the costs, be that as it may, the Kindle took off. Presently, it's hard to get on a plane or occupied metro auto without seeing one.
At the point when Amazon presented its freshest arrangement of Kindles fourteen days back, the Fire got a large portion of the consideration, since its cost and Amazon's support recommend that it may be the gadget that takes Android on tablets into the standard. In any case, for Amazon, the Kindle that may have the greatest effect is the low-end, highly contrasting model. At a promotion upheld $79, these things are expected to be spur of the moment purchases, something that you may very well drop under the tree over the occasions in the event that you come up short on thoughts. Furthermore, once they're in the hands of buyers, Amazon trusts they'll broaden its lead in the digital book showcase, with the DRM secure that runs with it, so altogether that it will take an atomic weapon to change things.
This new model likewise speaks to somewhat of a flight for Amazon, in that it's the first without a console. How does that function out?
From numerous points of view, splendidly. The gadget is perceptibly more minimal than past cycles. It fills my hand and is an extremely agreeable weight. I wasn't an aficionado of the chicklet-style console with its matrix like course of action of catches, so I'm not at all sorry to learn it go. Its nonattendance likewise gives the gadget a cleaner look, and places the concentration where it has a place: on the screen. In the console's nonattendance, Amazon has supported the measure of the rocker catch that helps you select on-screen things, which makes it somewhat simpler to operate. The rocker switch is flanked by four catches. Shockingly, Amazon flubbed the outline on these. Three of them are, without watchful examination, outwardly vague. (Incidentally, I can make out the littlest content setting on the screen, yet require perusing glasses for the catches.) The focuses of the catches are additionally somewhat raised, which makes a glare issue that makes it significantly harder to perceive what each does. With perusing glasses, it's conceivable to confirm that these are a somewhat sensible gathering of catches: back, console, menu, and home. Each does precisely what you'd expect. The page turn catches are currently symmetrical, with an expansive forward and little back on each side. It's hard to hit these unintentionally, which was an issue with some prior Kindles. The drawback is that, while the Kindle fits pleasantly into my hand, it's difficult to mastermind my fingers with the goal that they can work these catches one-gave.
Another sort
Programming insightful, little has changed with the new model. It's as yet centered around getting you to your perusing material and after that remaining out of your way as you have at it. The eInk screen has become observably better since the prior cycles, as the blaze that goes with page turns is shorter and less prominent than it used to be. Amazon likewise merits credit for chipping away at the product side of the condition. The early forms of the Kindle used to redraw the whole screen for pretty much everything. Presently, the product is exceptionally particular about redraws, which makes the entire interface significantly more responsive.
Having a responsive interface is somewhat critical now that the main console is the one that appears on the screen. Also, that is a change that is evident ideal from the begin.
The low-end demonstrate works just through WiFi, and requires a B/G switch. Since Kindle substance is intended to be conveyed through the system, the gadget will request that you sign into one when you initially initiate it. Entering a watchword required an excursion to the console, and it took me about a moment to punch in one that wasn't particularly long. You can raise the console at whatever point you have to sort something in by pushing the console catch; the writing will be coordinated into whatever field you've chosen with the rocker catch. Or, then again I ought to state raise the consoles—there are separate consoles for images, consistent letters, capital letters, and unique characters like accents and tildes. You switch among the consoles utilizing the rocker switch, and a similar strategy is utilized to explore among the keys. They're laid out one after another in order, instead of as a qwerty console. That takes a touch of getting used to, however isn't that awful once you make the alteration.
Some of Amazon's work on being brilliant with the eInk screen pays off with the console. On the off chance that you hold a conservative, it'll shoot the cursor to the suitable side of the console, yet won't stop to repaint the past keys back to white, so your choice abandons an obscured trail it. Correspondingly, when hunting down a book in the Kindle store, Amazon begins offering culmination suggesions as you write. These seem before long, and can be a major offer assistance. It's difficult to envision anything like that having been conceivable on the principal emphasis of the equipment.
How can it function? All things considered, it fluctuates in view of what you're attempting to do. Writing in the WiFi system's secret key was somewhat moderate. Utilizing the trial program to sign into Gmail was more regrettable, requiring two minutes and 35 seconds for the username/watchword mix. Writing in the URL for Ars took around 50 seconds, in spite of the fact that the site really looked quite great on-screen. The finishing proposals that showed up in the digital book store were useful, yet in the event that your pursuit begins with a typical word (I attempted a title that begun with "Ventures"), regardless you need to sort a reasonable piece of it out. All things considered, it eliminates the writing. Hunting down and obtaining a book wound up taking a few minutes accordingly. It took me around four and a half minutes to sort out "This is a genuinely short note, however it is by all accounts taking always to sort."
Given the decision, I'd deal with the Kindle's substance from my portable PC, and simply utilize the real equipment to download the outcomes. I would not utilize this for whatever else, notwithstanding making a Tweet, with the exception of in supreme crises (and I'm unable to think about a crisis that requires a tweet). In case you're hoping to take a great deal of notes as you read, you might need to consider heading up-market to one of the more costly models.
From various perspectives, the absence of a console makes it the purest digital book peruser Amazon has made, and it's quite great at that. I wouldn't see any problems a bigger screen, yet the quality is very great and the eInk screen is responsive. Additionally, now that the screen takes up the vast majority of the gadget's face, it's significantly nearer to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' unique vision, one where the gadget vanishes and you simply concentrate on the perusing. The battery life stays incredible in the event that you turn the WiFi off. What's more, at $79, it's substantially less demanding to legitimize as a buy that doesn't get utilized each day.
On the off chance that you as of now have a convenient gadget that runs the Kindle programming, the choice gets somewhat harder. Flipping pages and exploring through books is a much smoother encounter on (for instance) an iOS gadget, which can make the Kindle appear somewhat like an awkward trade off. Besides, a tablet will have the capacity to do numerous more things well. It won't have a similar battery life, however at any rate it will mean you could have one less gadget to stress over keeping charged. The reasonable place where the Kindle wins out is on weight, since it's truly agreeable to hold in a solitary hand.
That settles on for a genuinely straightforward basic leadership prepare. On the off chance that you are great with the eInk screen, then you ought to consider whether the light weight or long battery life matter to you. On the off chance that both of them do, at $79, it's likely worth snatching a Kindle.

Indeed, on the off chance that you have settled on a ultimate conclusion and are splendidly certain this is the correct time for you to purchase your first historically speaking utilized cell phone, then these are 15 helpful tips that ideally can be your first direction each time you're wanting to purchase utilized cell phones later on.
1. Run a Quick Scan looking into the issue Cover
The main thing to see from a cell phone is certainly its case cover. In this manner, each time you meet some utilized cell phones on any store, ensure that you generally run an exhaustive sweep of the gadget. Attempt to check whether the gadget has any physical deformity or scratch around the body of that gadget. This must be done keeping in mind the end goal to find out about what that gadget has been through in the past when it was still utilized by the past proprietors.
2. Ensure that the Case Cover is Original
Utilized cell phones are generally tormented with the discernment that their case spreads will disclose to you the entire thing about their condition. Indeed, that is so off-base. You can't pass judgment on the general nature of utilized cell phones just by taking a gander at how reflexive its body or how faultless its screen. There is a tremendous probability that the dealer as of now conceals them with some new outsider case covers that clearly will make them look like new telephones, isn't that so?
Subsequently, as a keen client, dependably outfit yourself with the mentality that the dealers could simply supplant the first however harmed case cover with some new outsider body keeping in mind the end goal to make deals.
3. Ensure that All the Physical Buttons Work Perfectly
Physical catches dependably turn into the delicate component on any cell phone that has a tendency to be harmed effectively on the off chance that they have been squeezed such a variety of times by the proprietors. That is the reason, when looking at any utilized cell phone on the store, dependably ensure that all the physical catches, recall, every one of them, can work flawlessly, with no hiccup. The best thing to do that is by squeezing each physical catch again and again. On the off chance that you see that there is any catch that gives a feeble or postpone reaction (in some cases it works, once in a while it doesn't) or even doesn't work at all when you squeeze it, then the best
4. Continuously Check the Screen Sensitivity with the User Interface
The following thing to check from an utilized cell phone is the screen surface and the affectability of its User Interface. In this procedure, dependably run an intensive sweep if there is any scratch around the screen and ensure that the touch screen still works flawlessly. Test the touch reaction from each side of the screen until the center range. Do some blended and arbitrary motions on the screen again and again, from:
sliding the UI to one side/appropriate/up/base,
doing multi-touch,
zooming in/out on the photographs or web program,
erasing gadgets/applications/components
writing on the virtual on-screen QWERTY console
and so on
What's more, in the event that you have an a lot of time, attempt to play some applications that are now introduced on the telephone, even superior amusements and test the affectability of the screen interface. Keep in mind, this is truly pivotal on the grounds that the greater part of the past proprietors may as of now drop it on the ground for a few circumstances previously, so it will specifically effect to the affectability of the screen.
5. Check if There is Any Glitch or Weird Colors Reproduction on the Screen
Other than its affectability, the other essential thing to keep an eye on the screen is the show. Normally, utilized cell phones have been dropped for a few circumstances by the past proprietors. Along these lines, it's truly critical for you to see the entire range on the screen to check if there is any glitch or odd line on shading propagation around the screen. On the off chance that you see any of these, then the screen is not fine.
6. Ensure that the Battery is still Pretty Good
There is probably battery is a standout amongst the most vital components in cell phones. The greater part of touch screen telephones, even the new iPhone, have frail battery life (except for Samsung or Motorola leaders obviously). Along these lines, it's truly significant to dependably run a test on this segment each time you need to purchase utilized cell phones. To name of few, you can do things like playing elite 3D diversions or watching motion pictures/recordings to ensure that the battery is still in quite great condition, if not awesome. In the event that the battery depletes before long notwithstanding when you simply open the photographs or listen a few tunes (which are not by any stretch of the imagination vitality expending exercises), then there is some kind of problem with the battery.
7. Check if the Camera's Shutter Key (if There is Any) Still Works
Some of cell phones generally have the physical shade key for shooting photographs/recordings, despite the fact that it can be supplanted with the on-screen virtual catch. Notwithstanding, on a few telephones, there is a component that gives you a chance to catch photographs with shade key notwithstanding when the screen is still bolted (e.g., Sony Xperia S, and so forth). That is the reason, despite the fact that you may not utilize it all the time, dependably do a brisk test on this screen key by squeezing it again and again just to ensure that this catch still works flawlessly.
8. Guarantee that the Cellular and Wi-Fi Connectivity Still Work Great
